Xasteius--you're spot on. What debate? What a joke!
circlegranch Sunday, November 6th at 5:16AM EST (link)My recollection of the Lincoln-Douglas debate was far different. There was pounding of fists, anger, controversy and finger-pointing. This reality TV deal last night was pathetic. Obviously, once again we’ve been dupped into believing that anything in this primary process is legitimate and honest. Instead, everything is staged, pre-determined and pre-planned. Clearly, these two got together and decided who would say what and when.
This was no debate, but rather, a couple of guys apparently auditioning for positions in the Romney Administration. Cain still doesn’t understand the Ryan Plan. He just sat there and nodded in agreement, right on cue. He does not have the requisite qualifications, knowlege and experience to be President. Yet, he can’t even stumble through a sentence without the audience breaking into applause.
The only true, red-blooded American ‘debate’ last night was the competition for glory between OK State and KS State. Go Cowboys!
Recollection? Of What?

daveoconnor--that's ok, but for the record, I didn't say I was present at the debate
circlegranch Sunday, November 6th at 7:25AM EST (link)but my recollection of it is taken from my very good American history education I rec’d. I’ve yet to reach my 60th year but ‘way back when’ kids were actually taught historical fact. Glad you got a laugh to start your day.

I don’t see any hope that America will change.
The point cannot be made often enough: Modern liberalism, as embodied in the Obama presidency, is the defender of the status quo. And the status quo is a road to economic ruin. Political forces cannot redistribute the wealth that the economic system does not produce.
That's why Cain
Scope (Diary) Saturday, November 5th at 9:42PM EST (link)thinks the American people are going to insist his 999 plan passes through Congress, both houses, and they are going to oblige.

unitedwestand Saturday, November 5th at 9:44PM EST (link)Your comment takes out of context what Herman actually said in #1: Having a sales tax ON TOP OF everything we already pay in Federal taxes. His current proposal REPLACES everything in effect now. It’s those darned apples & oranges again!
united, 999 will not replace any of the state taxes, though.
pttx333 (Diary) Saturday, November 5th at 9:52PM EST (link)So if I pay 6. 25% in Texas sales tax, add onto that local sales tax AND then add another 9% – whoa buddy, we are talking some serious taxation going on. Correct me if I’m wrong.
I don't get this part of 999--what am I missing?
circlegranch Sunday, November 6th at 5:31AM EST (link)It’s my understanding that under 999 we’ll only be taxed on ‘new’ goods, not used. For example, if I buy a used car, I pay no tax but if I buy a new car I do? What about ‘new’ stuff like groceries, medicine, utlility bills, insurance premiums? If we only pay taxes on ‘new’ things, how will that create jobs? Nobody will want to buy or build a new house; most middle class folks will be shopping for used cars, not new. Help me out here. I see this as a huge job killer and it’ll do nothing for housing starts, auto and vehicle manufacturers, etc. Heck, we’re already in a spot in this country where folks are buying used clothes, used cars. 999, at least from this perspective (which I admit I may not have it clear) is just more of the same–America in decline.

That's the general problem with ALL sales-tax schemes
Dave_A (Diary) Sunday, November 6th at 6:14AM EST (link)They penalize consumption, which is the core of a capitalist economy.
What Cain is doing with 9-9-9, is trying to create a ‘one size fits all’ tax reform plan that satisfies both flat-income-tax and national-sales-tax/so-called-Fair-Tax supporters.
National-sales-tax supporters tend to be people who ‘moralize’ economics and view ‘Saving’ as a noble activity, while ‘Spending’ is ignoble. They therefore want to force Americans to save more and spend less, and use the tax system to do this, by taxing spending.
You will hear them talk about income tax as ‘penalizing productivity’ and ‘discouraging work’ ignoring the fact that there’s no point to productivity if no one consumes the product made.
Cain sees the sales-tax ’9′ as a bridge to the ‘Fair Tax’ proposal, which is a 23% sales tax replacing all the others. Neither addresses the issue of penalizing consumption and rewarding cigar-box cash-hoarding.
TO CONTRAST, the argument for a flat income tax (And nothing else) is fairly simple: Your annual income is the economic ‘value’ of 1 year of your time, and everyone should give the same amount of their time (percent of income) to pay for the costs of keeping the USA running (think of it as ‘country club dues’ or ‘rent’ in simple terms). There is no penalizing or encouraging anything – it’s just ‘we need this much of your time to support the cost of you living here.
Flat tax is the way to go – it’s the most ‘fair’ option out there.
As for the whole ‘taxing the poor’ thing – there’s a simple solution to that: If it costs the government MORE to tax you than you pay in taxes, you should be tax exempt. It’s a simple equation – per-capita cost to collect taxes * tax rate = income level exempt from tax. This isn’t welfare or income redistribution, it’s simple economics.

Instead, we just allow Cain to make stupid remarks about China’s nukes and make false accusations about other people while getting all testy when any come his way. Guarantee you that if Perry had been the one reeling off ideas and pieces of signed law from another candidate, Sean and the boys would be all over him tomorrow. What do we get? www.dailycaller.com has a headline about Rush wanting a GOP Larry Flynt to come forward and pay for sex scandal info. This is really helpful: all our Right media is obsessed with is keeping score and covering the backside of a candidate that’s being initiated into the wonderful world of politics. We’re going into the gutter to do a stand-off with the MSM because to our side, its more important to get in a swipe on the Left than it is to be completely unbiased and to report equally on all candidates. When you respond to mud slinging with mud slinging, America loses. Rush needs to take a vacation for awhile.
If we had Fair and Balanced reporting and media sources in this election cycle, America might actually have a chance.
However, Bill O’Reilly may be seeing the light. He has an article in the Boston Herald which can also be picked up at RealClear Politics in which he writes basically that Cain is not qualified. Now, whether Bill is open to any candidate or if this is the early signs of the gap being closed to advance Romney’s case, who knows, but it should be interesting next time Cain-supporter, Dick Morris, enters THEE No-Spin Zone.

It was just a matter of time before all of the good ole boy, corporate cronyism solyndra type of deals that Perry has made over the past few years came out. Opponenets didn’t have to use it since his own political suicide was already complete. But if he makes the big comeback that all the Perry supporters still expect they will all be there ready to be unleashed. But specifically I am talking about the energy companies that have donated to the SuperPAC.

ragnard_skjold, what other states have
retire05 Sunday, November 6th at 11:27AM EST (link)enterprise funds? Or are you too lazy to do the research on that?
Yes, Perry is naturally going to get donations from energy companies. He supports Newt’s “Drill here, drill now” plan. Why? Because Texas, Louisiana, Oklahoma, Kansas, are all energy states. The number of oil wells as you drive through parts of Kansas makes you think you are in Texas or Louisiana.
Texas laid plans to become the lead wind power state under George Bush. But that technology has proven to be expensive and not worth the money. Why do you think that T. Boone cancelled his plans for a huge wind farm although he already had contracts with the City of Dallas to provide power? Because he could not get the federal government to pay for it, and it is cost prohibitive. Wind farms are extremelhy expensive to maintain, but those costs were hidden when Texas got into the industry. The Lower Colorado River Authority built a huge wind farm, but when it proved to be so expensive to maintain, they sold it to Florida Power and Light because Florida wanted part of its energy to come from wind and because LCRA offered Austin business the option of using wind power generated electricity. It was so much more expensive for those businesses, they changed back to the old method of energy generation and the wind system was going broke. So, it was sold to FL&P.
retire05
Are you talking about this fund.
gekster (Diary) Sunday, November 6th at 11:36AM EST (link)from:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Texas_Enterprise_Fund
The Texas Enterprise Fund is a business incentive fund that was created by legislation in 2003. The fund, which had an initial $295 million investment, is used for ensuring the growth of business in Texas. One of Texas’ most competitive recruitment tools, these funds are used primarily to attract new business to the state or assist with the substantial expansion of an existing business as part of a competitive recruitment situation. Sources indicate that since 2003 the Fund has yielded up to $6.3 billion in capital investment in Texas by out-of-state companies[1].
In 2004, he authorized the fund to grant $20 million to Countrywide Financial in return for a promise “to create 7,500 new jobs in the state by 2010.” The grant (all of which are approved by the Governor, the Lieutenant Governor and Speaker of the House) is one of the largest made from the fund in terms of the size and the number of jobs promised. In the fall of 2007, while slashing jobs and with its stock price plummeting, Countrywide was eventually acquired in a fire sale by Bank of America. But thanks to the “claw-back” provisions in the program, grantees return all funds to the state for jobs not created.
I guess that you didn’t see that:
1. created by legislation in 2003. (not by Perry)
2.The grants, all of which are approved by the Governor, the Lieutenant Governor and Speaker of the House. (So three people approve, not just Perry)
3. Sources indicate that since 2003 the Fund has yielded up to $6.3 billion in capital investment in Texas by out-of-state companies (It has given back more than was spent)
4.But thanks to the “claw-back” provisions in the program, grantees return all funds to the state for jobs not created. (you don”t make jobs, give the money back)
So what is wrong with this, and still, can you name his coporate buddies.

Perry's ideas ???????
lastgopinillinois (Diary) Saturday, November 5th at 10:56PM EST (link)block grants to states, Perry’s idea? Paul Ryan proposed block granting aid to the States for medicare in April 2011. Block grants are not a new idea. LBJ used them. Bush’s 2005 budget proposal included 10 block grants.
ending federal mandates, Perry’s idea? Steve King was probably the first to speak in opposition to the mandates in Jan, 2011, just a few days after 0bamacare was passed.
voter ID, Perry’s idea? South Carolina, Wisconsin, Tennessee, Kansas and Texas (Perry’s state) all passed photo ID voter laws in 2011. Indiana has a stricter law that was passed in 2005. I doubt it was exclusively Perry’s idea.
loser pay law Perry’s idea? Some parts of Canada have loser pay laws. With all the banter about including tort reform in our healthcare system a few years ago, I wouldn’t be surprised if many versions previously offered didn’t also include this provision. Who idea was it originally?
States are labratories of innovation, Perry’s idea? The term was coined in the book “Fed Up!: Our Fight to Save America from Washington” by Rick Perry and Newt Gingrich. I think it was published in 2010. But I could almost swear to it that I have heard Gingrich use the term before in a public speach long before then.
Besides, WHO cares who originally came up with the idea? Lets pick a guy with the best of the best ideas and put him in there !
In the beginning, God created earth to be an extension of his vast Kingdom and his LOVE was so great that he wanted to share it with man, whom he created in his own image and likeness and gave him free will.

Voter I.D. laws have been proposed for a long time. Rick Perry didn’t come up with the idea, but he supported it strongly. And funny that most of the states you listed that passed Voter I.D. laws now have Republican governors, and Perry is the head of the Republican Governor’s Association.
Funny how that works, isn’t it?
And golly gee, some parts of Canada has “loser pays” laws. So what? Loser pay laws were enacted in Texas to back up tort reform.
Oh, and one other thing; Newt Gingrich did not write Fed Up with Rick Perry. Newt only wrote the introduction. Seems you might want to read something before you feel qualified to talk about it.

I don’t think much of Cain’s lackluster campaign, but c’mon: let’s not pretend like the Aristotlean genius that is Perry came up with all of the ideas in his campaign and “Fed Up” without significant help and precedence. Gingrich supporters accused Perry of lifting from their plan when he released his, and Bachmann said the same about Perry’s tax plan. Whether this is true or not is irrelevant, IMO: it is the effectiveness, not the originality, of the ideas which is most important.

2 tablespoons lemon juice
1 teaspoon Garlic Powder
1 teaspoon Onion Salt
1 teaspoon Rosemary Leaves, crushed
1 pound boneless skinless chicken breast halves
DIRECTIONS1. Mix oil, lemon juice and seasonings in small bowl. Place chicken in large resealable plastic bag or glass dish. Add marinade; turn to coat well.
2. Refrigerate 30 minutes or longer for extra flavor. Remove chicken from marinade. Discard any remaining marinade.
3. Grill over medium-high heat 6 to 8 minutes per side or until chicken is cooked through, turning frequently.

What a great recipe, gekster! I do sort of the same thing
pttx333 (Diary) Sunday, November 6th at 12:51AM EST (link)but, since it is just me, I use a small whole chicken and stuff the cavity with lemon slices, seasonings, garlic cloves and rosemary, brush with oil or butter and then bake at 350 till done. Peanut Butter Sandwich.
gekster (Diary) Sunday, November 6th at 12:30AM EST (link)ingredients:
one or two, or even three slices of bread, anykind, except pumpernicle.
1 jar peanut butter, smooth or crunchy.
Take one slice of bread, and apply peanut butter evenly on one side.
Either fold the bread in half, or add another slice.
If you want, take a third slice of bread, and apply an even layer of peanut butter on that, and add to the original two slices.
enjoy.
I hear that adding a slice of bread with an even layer of jelly or jam,
or even marmalade makes it even better.

555, gekster, now that is an interesting p.b. "recipe" that
pttx333 (Diary) Sunday, November 6th at 12:56AM EST (link)I’m sure no one has even thought of before. Too funny!
Speaking of peanut butter, I’m sort of a p.b. addict and eat it all the time. My boss of many, many years with whom I still work part-time on occasion, told me about another combination that never in my wildest dreams would have thought of on my own. You spread p.b. on a regular cracker and add a Vlasic bread & butter oval pickle on top. I was really leery, but it turned out to be a fantastic blend of flavors. Try it, you might like it.
I thought I would start with something easy.
gekster (Diary) Sunday, November 6th at 1:04AM EST (link)Something he could handle.

Saltines, yep, that is it! And I use the Vlasic pickles
pttx333 (Diary) Sunday, November 6th at 1:08AM EST (link)because they are really crunchy and flavorful. Can’t believe your Mom does the same thing! I’ve never heard of the combination before, but I certainly do enjoy it now.
I’m very familiar with canning – my Mom and maternal grandmother canned all of the time from their very own gardens. I used to have a garden every year but never got into the canning routine. Used the freezing route instead, and it worked out great.
Small world, indeed, gekster!

Herman Cain does great after a tough week and Newt is back.
tngal (Diary) Saturday, November 5th at 11:21PM EST (link)Lots of people wrote Cain off after the Politco slop-trough. Then again a lot of people write him off a month ago, writing stories that included the line ..”He’s great BUT, he has no chance of winning the blah-blah-blah.”
Herman Cain has had a lot going on this week and I think with everything else on his mind he did ok. Hey, If you just went through the gauntlet he went through, would you be THAT composed?
Would Perry?? Please! Perry’s not that composed during a good week. GIve him a bad week AND a debate and he’s not able.
And Newt..man. Terrific. He’s got more grey matter than…… 3 Perrybots and a Paulite combined. I know he’s got baggage. They all do. But we know Newt’s baggage. What else can they throw at him?
These two need a coin. Cain /Newt…. Heads or Tails….WIN!!
Fine. Its Saturday night and all I’ve done is watch a political debate…. twice! I don’t need to have a love life. I’m married!
tngal, you are oblivious to anyone else's problems but Cains
retire05 Saturday, November 5th at 11:33PM EST (link)So what if Cain had a lot going on this week? He can thank his lousy campaign manager, Mark Block, for that, along with his own big mouth.
But of course, in your mind, Rick Perry never has had anything to deal with before a debate, right?
I guess being in the air in a Texas DPS helicopter at dawn to fly over the area of the Bastrop Count fires that was almost 40,000 acres the day of the Nevada debate doesn’t mean anything to you. I guess being at the Bastrop Community Center to speak to the almost 6,000 Texans that had just lost their homes (all 1,554 homes) late that morning to reassume the residents of his state that he was there for them and organizing relief, doen’t matter to you. I guess you think it was easy to be up before dawn, experience the disaster that was your state, reassure the citizens that the state ws there for them, only to fly to Nevada late that afternoon, arriving just before debate time, doesn’t make any points with you. Nah, there was nothing on Rick Perry’s mind, was there?
Yeah, Rick Perry was composed after having to deal with an disaster that he immediately had to go back to, unlike Herman Cain who has all the time in the world to prepare for a debate.
That is the difference you just can’t accept. There are those who actually govern, and then there is Herman Cain who can only talk about governing since he has never had to actually do it.
retire05
all the time in the world-retire05??
tngal (Diary) Saturday, November 5th at 11:49PM EST (link)Cain had all the time in the world???This was the prep week. He’s had journalists pounding him left and right with such probing questions as:
“What did you mean when you said ‘Doctor up’ your ice tea, Herman?” Do you admit that is harassment?
or
“Although others wrote and signed the NDA, could you give us the sordid details? Yes we know you’re a gentleman and won’t divulge their names but everyone else is prohibited. Well, um, no the girl isn’t prohibited anymore but she’s not talking. So maybe you could shed some light on……”
And don’t pull your wildfires on me, we had floods in TN, in case you forgot, and we’re still trying to fix up. In fact just about EVERY STATE HAS FILED FOR DISASTER RELIEF. If for no other reason than Obama has taken over our government. (healthcare waivers)
Same side, remember?????
tngal, you're delusional
retire05 Sunday, November 6th at 12:26AM EST (link)if you think dodging reporters is more stressful than dealing with 6,000 people who are homeless because their homes are nothing but a bunch of ashes.
Can you even wrap your brain around 40,000 acres of burned, scortched land that has nothing but sticks left that used to be beautiful pine trees and live oaks? Can you imagine what it is like to watch a fire move so quickly that people only had 15 minutes to leave behind everything they owned? Can you imagine trying to deal with a fire so hot that even the fireplace chimney’s fell? Can you? Can you begin to comprehend what it is like for a governor to have to deal with that? And you have the gall, the unmitigated gall, to compare a bunch of reporters to such a disaster? How dare you. HOW DARE YOU.
You ignorant twit. When Memphis flooded, you could see the water rising. It didn’t wipe out 40,000 acres in just two days. So don’t whine to me about some damn water that happened to flood Tennessee. Did those people have time to leave their homes taking their possessions with them? Yes, they did. And if they didn’t, you can blame your state authorities for that.
You are just an apologist for Herman Cain. I suspect he could axe murder his mother, and you would find a reason to justify his actions.

I don't think the floods in TN
txpat Sunday, November 6th at 1:32AM EST (link)Was handled by Cain.
Not sure what tngal was comparing flooding in TN to Cain’s scandal mishandle.
I am sure the folks in TN and TX disasters were devastating to them.
I think Perry’s being a Governor handling the fires that Came up suddenly was more tiresome than Cain’s scandal that he had years to prepare for, but could not handle.
... called you an ignorant twit
jrmax13 Sunday, November 6th at 4:49AM EST (link)Now tngal — I want you to march right down to av’s tacky office and find out if an IQ test could be administered. What’s that? Yeah, it’s hard to get good help ! Moving on, I wouldn’t put too much thought into what retired05 says about the natural disasters. You see, everything is bigger and better in Texas. Lord, when I moved from Alaska to Texas – the people here in Texas swore Texas was larger. O.K., it wasn’t that bad. But, you get the point. There are only two sets of people I have run into that have that over-the-top pride that is not deserved or recognized by anybody else. Those two groups are people who are natives of New York City and Native Texans. Go figure. The bottom line is that if a Native Texan tells you their wildfires are worse than your flooding – don’t argue. It just makes them more irrational. You are not an ignorant twit for expressing yourself.
jrmax13, so Texas pride is not deserved?
retire05 Sunday, November 6th at 9:26AM EST (link)Really? Well, hey, my offer to help you pack for your move OUT of Texas still stands. I will be more than happy to escort you to the state line of your choice, be it Oklahoma, Arkansas or Louisiana.
No, Texas is not larger than Alaska, but the joke is that if you melted all the ice and snow in Alaska it would be. Too bad that you have lived in Texas yet remain clueless to our humor. Good thing you are leaving. Believe me, it can be none too soon. What size U-Haul do you need?
Yes, we have a proud history. One that is deserved. And you can try to smear that all you want, but history has shown that Texas didn’t need the United States, Andrew Jackson believed the United States needed Texas. And that has not changed.
Now, if you want to debate that the Bastrop Complex fire was not the worst, in terms of damage, in Texas history, please feel free to back that up. You might also want to explain your inability to determine distance. No wonder you were in “academia.”
retire05
retire05, God bless ya. I've had enough of this guy playing the Victim card
circlegranch Sunday, November 6th at 5:02AM EST (link)Poor Herman; he’s had a tough week, in spite of Hannity and the Big Mouths on the Right carrying his water, ignoring the truth, refusing to acknowledge that in letting Herman be Herman, that includes allowing him to sling accusations whenever politically expedient and never getting called out on it. Herman finally stepped down from the NRA after getting nabbed for 2 sex scandals and he’s had the time ever since to concoct his stories for the press. Doesn’t matter if the women lied! It got far enough down the tracks for settlements to be paid out, hush money, whatever suits you. If it was a whole lot of nothing, we’re still forgetting that the NRA is a big-time lobbying group, using dues paid in by little mom and pop restaurants as well as big chains. The NRA is still a Washington insider organization and Herman was the top dog. He’s had years to explain this away and I still maintain, the man is nothing but arrogant to put himself out there day after day acting like he should get a pass. He swears he’s innocent but apparently there was enough compelling info to force the payment of damages to two women we know of. This is just like getting a DUI that you pleaded innocent to because your side of the story is that the breathalizer machine was defective and made a false reading. Too bad. You still have it in your record. You apparently tiptoed into the danger zone in the first place. This is YOUR problem.
One point in this entire primary process that ticks me off to no end is this: I’m tired of hearing people complain about Rick Perry referring too often to Texas. How else can the guy explain his record of results? How else can he show America what has worked really well in terms of balancing a budget, defunding Planned Parenthood, helping the military and vets, lowering taxes, etc, if he doesn’t refer to his real-time experience and accomplishments? I don’t hear anybody complaining about hearing too much about Godfather’s Pizza, or Romney’s constant blowing about his past experience in business, Santorum’s very brief tour as a Senator, Gingrich’s distant past as Speaker. Nobody complains when Ron Paul refers to his career as a doctor or when Bachmann tells us about all her accomplishments in the House. When you or I go apply for a job, what do they want to talk about? OUR PAST RECORD AND EXPERIENCE.
My friends, between now and the Iowa caucus, we have to organize ourselves in some way either by donating to Perry or a PAC that supports him, start writing letters to the editors of Iowan newspapers, and anything else we can think of short of actually putting our own 2 boots on the ground in Iowa (do that too if you can) and get the message out. We’ve been saying here for weeks that there’s an undertow agenda going on inside the Right media to try and put the fix on this election. It becomes more clear every day.
There is no reality anymore in the presidency. The current guy is not clueless as this country burns, he knows exactly what he’s up to. He spends his free time sitting on couches of daytime TV talk shows and his evenings on comedy shows. He stood in front of styrofoam Greek pillars (some irony there, huh?) and made promises to a flock of idiots that would follow their Pied Piper anywhere. We’re headed down that same road, folks. We’re not using our heads.
I comment here too early in the mornings to get my voice heard by very many. But, retire05, I hope at least you eventually see this. I always appreciate your reasoned thinking. There’s too few of you, Friend.
I guess while I tossed and turned yet another night (I haven’t slept through the night since Obama got elected and I know there’s plenty more like me) we got off onto recipes. That’s a nice diversion. Folks still have to eat, after all. Plus, its nice to see that in spite of a WH that thinks they can dictate what levels of fat and sugar we put in our mouths, Americans are still going about life on our own terms. Maybe we should organize a Redstate Cookbook? If anybody wants a killer recipe for pumpkin fudge for your Thanksgiving table, let me know.
circlegranch, who are you kidding ?
jrmax13 Sunday, November 6th at 5:16AM EST (link)Send La Raza Rick more money ? He no longer needs extra funding because he has hoarded it all to save for later. That will do him no good when he’s not even invited back to the debates eventually for having such low poll numbers. Hey, I’m just trying save you PerryPhiles from yourselves. You need an intervention ! Rick Perry is unelectable in the general election. I know it. You know it. The media know it. The only problem is that PerryPhiles don’t have the integrity to own up to the fact that they know deep-down that he has the stink of LOSER all over him. Oh, my. If you guys would just stop being so self-righteous – you would consolidate around a candidate that actually has a chance to de-throne Obummer 52 short weeks from now.
Why is Rick Perry unelectable in the general election?
David123 (Diary) Sunday, November 6th at 9:03AM EST (link)1. Did he pal around with terrorists? NO
2. Did he attend a hate-America church for 20 years? NO
3. Did he waste millions of $$ on Solyndra? NO
4. Did he allow Mexican drug gangs to get guns? NO
5. Did he preside over a state economy that has done worse than the overall US economy for the past three years? NO
6. Did he serve honorably in the US military? YES
What about illegal immigration? I’ll take a guy who signs a law giving instate tuition to illegal aliens that passed with a veto-proof majority over a guy who has his very own illegal alien aunt living in this country.
Rick Perry is very electable in the general election.

circlegranch, their problem is that you cannot argue
retire05 Sunday, November 6th at 9:34AM EST (link)with success. Texas has been, and remains, a success in this down economy. You notice none of those naysayers ever mention state debts, or debt to GDP, or even per capita state debt. They never talk about the jobs their states have created, their tax base, or any of the other things that have made Texas a rip-roaring success and model for other states.
They want to talk about “in-state” tuition, ignoring the fact that under Romney, Obama’s illegal aunt lived in public housing and off welfare. Or that his illegal uncle remained in the U.S. And oooooh, we can’t take about the Romney debt that was bequeathed to Massachusetts, can we?
The people that want to bash Perry, and Texas, don’t even live here. I read one long post about health insurance premiums and taxes in Texas by someone who doesn’t live in Texas. Everyone seems to be an expert on my state, although I doubt they have ever crossed over the state line.
I am tired of tngal making excuses for Cain. Yet, she refuses to answer this question:
what is in Herman Cain’s history that tells you how he will govern?

texasroots Sunday, November 6th at 10:06AM EST (link)Appears that Newt is in with Cain and Romney, mocking Perry’s success in Texas.
texasroots, I give Newt credit for one thing:
retire05 Sunday, November 6th at 10:24AM EST (link)last night Cain kept referring to the “Chilean model.” Yet, it was Newt that pointed to the Galveston County model, just one county that opted out of SS before the Congress saw what could happen to their over reaching socialist plan and made it illegal for counties to opt-out of SS.
Cain, had he been honest, being in Houston (actually The Woodlands outside of Houston), would have admitted that the Galveston County system was actually one of the plans used by Chile to create their model for a retirement plan. But Cain just can’t bring himself to admit that our state has done anything right.
Cain also seems to be unaware of what a state has done when speaking before that state’s citizens. Voter I.D. ? Well, Herman, we did that. Tort reform? Herman, you’re late to the game. Loser pays? Yep, that too, Herman.
Since all politics are local, Herman better up his game.

texasroots Sunday, November 6th at 11:23AM EST (link)Moral of the story, Cain is not honest. Not a surprise, because I never trusted him from the beginning. Cain and Obama are alike.
(By the way, I saw Newt standing in kitchen door with a weird look on his face when Perry was speaking at one of the events. Santorum wants to beat up on Perry over the border, but Perry’s porposals are exactly what Santorum proposed in his own bill (S. 3564 – 109th Congress) so he really can’t go there. Newt knows he has a high mountain to climb. His past picadillos will come back to bite him if he climbs in the polls. Huntsman and Johnson WHO? Bachmann self imploded because she is a one issue candidate. Romney is just plodding along, refusing to do individual interviews (why?) and sticking around 25%. Romney also had to change tactics and run as a businessman because if people start looking at his record as governor, he would be a goner.
Only Newt can point to a history and say “I have done this, or that.” But the trouble is that was then, and we now live in a whole different nation with different problems. I do believe that Newt belongs in any new administration, but in what capacity, I’m not sure. And hell, I would give Ron Paul the authority to audit the Fed. Perry can run on his history and point to “I hae done this, or that” and it is current.
But Rick Perry is not a D.C. insider as Newt is or even Cain as the cheif lobbyist for one of the largest lobbying organization in D.C. So one needs to ask themselves, why are all of the candidates attacking only one other candidate, Rick Perry? It is because those things that have worked to make Texas the most successful state in our union during an economic downturn will be taken to D.C. (like reviewing agencies to determine if they are worth their funding and actually benefit the taxpaying citizens like Texas does) and that threatens a lot of statists.

Gosh, tngal, you set such a low bar for Cain
joayn (Diary) Sunday, November 6th at 2:29PM EST (link)it’s no wonder he can do no wrong. Low expectatitions and all that.
It’s funny, probably one of the best comments I’ve read that describes why Cainiacs love Herb so was written at Hot Air. Paraphrasing, because Cain is not a professional politician, we expect him to make mistakes as he goes along as this is all new to him. His mistakes inspire us and shows us that he is just like us. But Perry on the otherhand, since he is a governor and has had so much more experience should be held to a much higher standard. His mistakes should be judged and considered as much more egregious and damning.
As a Perry supporter, I know he’s made mistakes. He made them, he has to correct them. That’s as it should be. But I think the devotion to all that is Cain kind of gets in the way of objectivity and is way over the top. That’s how it seems. anyway. It’s kind of like watching the Beatles on Ed Sullivan.
America is an idea; a noble idea that essentially boils down to the shocking belief that the masses are in fact not asses. John Nolte

The format worked . . .
redmymind (Diary) Sunday, November 6th at 1:02AM EST (link)because the two evidently had a “non-aggression” pact going into it. Going up against BHO will not be so . . . “tea and finger sandwiches.” I too am tired of the phony 1-minute responses to serious policy questions in the debates we’ve seen, but my solution to that is to not invite back those who clearly have no shot at the nomination. That said, it’s artificial to have the candidates come to the debates with one hand tied so that they’re effectively not allowed to call on each other’s inconsistencies. If we all want to feel good about ourselves for being “positive” with each other, why not open up an encounter group? To prepare for BHO, however, we need debates that focus on the substantive as much as they allow for free and lively exchanges.
The debate reminded me of this clip from Dr. Strangelove:

How about Perry v. Cain, or Perry v. Gingrich?

redmymind (Diary) Sunday, November 6th at 1:45AM EST (link)Hey! What a great idea for a trapeze act!
Perry v. Cain (with foreign policy cheatsheet to make things fair)
Perry v. Gingrich . . . on executive experience and real leadership
The sooner everyone realizes that Perry and Romney are the only 2 'qualified' candidates
Dave_A (Diary) Sunday, November 6th at 6:39AM EST (link)The sooner we can get the ‘Anybody but Mitt’ vote united under one banner, and go from there…
Governor vs ex-Governor… Northeast vs Southwest…
As long as the vote stays split up between Gingrich, Cain, Perry, and the rest…
Mitt will win in the end, without actually having to EARN the win…
In a Mitt vs Rick 2-man fight, whoever comes out with the nomination will have had to justify everything to the people…
So long as we keep this giant field (many of whom it’s obvious should not and will not win the nomination) we just let Romney slide on by to the nomination.
Which is not good for anyone, including the Romney camp.
I’m hoping Perry pulls a comeback personally, but whoever wins should get there after a strong challenge, which you will never get with such a fractured field.

Anti-Romney meet Perry
bzip Sunday, November 6th at 7:47AM EST (link)I could not agree more. This needs to get to a Perry Vs Romney race quickly and all the anti-Romney folks need to start rallying behind Perry and get this show on the road.
Enough with the game playing.

No-Shot Nominees
jrmax13 Sunday, November 6th at 3:04AM EST (link)red, you wrote that “my solution to that is to not invite back those who clearly have no shot at the nomination.” I can see your point. I certainly would like for a particular candidate (who will remain un-named) to be dis-invited. However, finding a fair cut-off or threshold to judge who gets cut. Now that I think about it — and earlier post noted that it was sort of like a reality show. I now see the survivor aspect. Hmmm. We still have many months to go.
The problem with cutting people
Dave_A (Diary) Sunday, November 6th at 6:31AM EST (link)Is that it tends to cause them to run ‘spoiler’ campaigns.
We have ‘A Candidate’ in the GOP race who’s entire platform is the destruction of America – the destruction of our dollar and economy by deflation (making the dollar so ‘strong’ it is useless in commerce, while wiping out the net worth of the 98% of Americans who’s life is invested in the THINGS they own instead of cigar-boxes full of cash, and forcing every business to take a huge loss due to market prices below the purchase-price of the inventory they are selling), the gutting of our military, and the abandonment of almost 100 years of world leadership to go hide in our national basement.
But if the party took any action against him, he would take his fanatical supporters & launch a ‘Nader-Raider’ campaign that just might produce 4 more years of Obama.
The SOLUTION is not ‘kicking people out’, but rather a nationwide runoff system (instant runoff being the easiest) similar to what Louisiana uses. If no one gets over 50% of the votes cast, there’s a run-off between the top 2 parties (or in a primary, the top-2 candidates) with no write-ins allowed.
Formerly known as dcacklam – they finally fixed my access to the ‘profile’ page
I like your LA comparison
jrmax13 Sunday, November 6th at 3:16PM EST (link)dcacklam, I was not aware that Louisiana had their runoff system setup like that. It sounds reasonable.
Herm/Newt: you both can't be prez. Your non-debate debate must have been
circlegranch Sunday, November 6th at 9:20AM EST (link)concocted instead to be more of a fireside chat between hand-holding friends. All that was missing were the slippers, brandy and cigars. Since you apparently agree on most everything and since Newt has said he’d serve as VP for anybody, you guys either are going to go a bit further down the road as a tag team and try for the nomination, the winner picking other to run with him, or, more likely you’re simply auditioning for jobs with Romney.
A question for Herman: if Rick Perry were to challenge you to a so-called Lincoln-Douglas debate, same format, everything the same only its him instead of Newt, would you be so cordial? Would you nod in agreement and be a gentleman?

I know...
nathanalbright (Diary) Sunday, November 6th at 3:52AM EST (link)….that it isn’t you, Jrmax. I’m not sure why it’s being done, as you don’t strike me as a bot-ish sort of commenter myself. But someone feels differently, I suppose. I wouldn’t mind if someone could get me a decent recipe for some American food that I could find the ingredients for here in Thailand. I rather like my fried chicken & buttermilk biscuits and chicken parmesian, and my steak nachos too.
Food overseas...
Dave_A (Diary) Sunday, November 6th at 6:33AM EST (link)Try getting a decent pizza on a COP in Afghanistan….
And I don’t mean BAF, or any other fobbit-land type place that has a Pizza Hut….

I can't imagine...
nathanalbright (Diary) Sunday, November 6th at 8:11AM EST (link)…that it would be easy at all to get decent food of any variety in Afghanistan. But what’s a fobbit?
Kowalski
nathanalbright (Diary) Sunday, November 6th at 8:17AM EST (link)The best definition I was able to come up with from urban dictionary was this:
Fobbit 263 up, 12 down
A term used to describe soldiers in Iraq that rarely if ever leave the relative safety of the Forward Operating Base (FOB). This is a perjoritive term used by soldiers that spend a lot of time outside the wire beaing shot at and dodging road-side bombs, for those soldiers that live a safer and more comfortable life.
Now, I must say that Thailand (unless you’re in the flooded areas of Bangkok right now) might seem like a fobbit-type area to those who are servicemen, but as an unarmed missionary type in a small village in Northern Thailand, I don’t think it would be fair to compare me to the brave soldiers on the front lines either. They earn all the decent American food they get when their tour(s) is/are over.
The fobbit reference
Dave_A (Diary) Wednesday, November 9th at 3:05AM EST (link)Was to the folks who live in places like BAF, KAF, and Balad/BIAP….
Not to civillians doing their part to make the world a better place in various 3rd-world hellholes where there’s no US presence of any type beyond an embassy or consulate ‘somewhere else’, let alone a miniature American city built of Hesco barriers, complete with TGI Fridays & Pizza Hut….
Formerly known as dcacklam – they finally fixed my access to the ‘profile’ page
My village...
nathanalbright (Diary) Wednesday, November 9th at 3:45AM EST (link)…definitely is no “fobbit” place. I don’t live in a city like Chiang Mai which has lots of malls. I live in a small village with two prisons, a few sketchy local restaurants with dubious sanitary standards, and a couple of temples, along with a police box and my school. To do any grocery shopping or banking or going to the post office I have to take a sung-tow (truck taxi) trip to a market town a few kilometers north of here. If I want to go to the consulate it’s a trip down into Chiang Mai. So, I’m not really big on the fobbit lifestyle myself. I am an “embedded westerner” in a legitimate and obscure Thai village.
I'll have to try your pumpkin bars, gekster.

A nondebate between Cain and Gingrich
bzip Sunday, November 6th at 7:35AM EST (link)Cain clearly shows he is without substance. In a debate format such is this, Cain with fail since he has no substance BUT Perry will shine. It appears a number of media sites feel the same:

“Cain seemed ill at ease; he deferred frequently to Gingrich on complex aspects of federal programs. When one of the two moderators, Rep. Steve King (R-Iowa), asked about defined benefits, Cain gave a halting answer. “A defined…. You go first, Newt.”

And Newt wins by a landslide
bzip Sunday, November 6th at 7:59AM EST (link)I usually don’t put any stock into this online polls but this one most likely has a greater chance of being correct (I think). The bottom line is a poll from HotAir (a mostly pro-Cain site) has Newt winning the debate by a landslide
.
Who won the Cain-Gingrich debate?
Cain 13.36% (707 votes)
Gingrich 67.17% (3,554 votes)
Neither won 8.9% (471 votes)
Unsure/No Opinion 10.57% (559 votes)
