Rasmussen Reports is out with a new poll showing JD Hayworth gaining significant ground on John McCain. Rasmussen finds a mere 7 point lead (48%-41%) for McCain. In January, Rasmussen had McCain ahead by 22 points (53%-31%), so this new poll represents a 15 point swing in Hayworth’s favor. More troubling for McCain is that he is under 50 percent – generally considered a sign of an incumbent in trouble.
What makes this result even more impressive is that the poll was conducted in the immediate aftermath of a bad week for the Hayworth campaign (its campaign consultant left and an attempted cheeky comment about gay marriage went horribly wrong) and over $1 million on negative advertising by the McCain campaign. All in all, this has to be very encouraging for the Hayworth campaign and shows that McCain is beatable.

Hayworth is pulling a Rubio-style comeback
houstoneagle (Diary) Thursday, March 18th at 3:47PM EST (link)All he has to do is stick to the issues, because there is such a dramatic contrast between his conservative positions and those of McCain.
People are mad as hell. Everybody loves John McCain, but we don’t vote for who we respect and love–we vote for the right person for the job. And that person is someone who represents us on the issues.
This race has tightened. Hayworth’s and McCain’s unfavorables are identical. When most of McCain’s fellow Arizona Republicans think he is out of touch with them, you know he’s in hot water.
The Hayworth campaign can get back on track and close this gap Marco Rubio style if they stick to how he will deliver on conservative issues in ways that McCain not only didn’t do, but actually worked against over his decades in Congress.
Let’s get behind this guy.
“We preach the conservative gospel of individual liberty and choice and point out the only choice the Democrats want you to have is whether or not to kill a baby.”–Erick Erickson, D-Day 2010
I completely agree
redinsf (Diary) Thursday, March 18th at 6:43PM EST (link)Lets make this light red seat dark red.
I’m so glad Hayworth jumped into the primary, Simcox was a non-starter, and endorsed hayworth, so now his constantly 3-5% he was polling goes to hayworth.
Come on Erickson, endorse Hayworth already.
NObama won because McCain wasn’t a conservative, he was democrat lite.
Hayworth > McCain

Come on JD!
redpens (Diary) Thursday, March 18th at 8:35PM EST (link)Paint the People’s Seat dark red! I respect McCain on hell-th scare, but he’s stuck a finger in our eye one too many times. Cap-and-tax, gang of 14 are just 2 examples.
McCain for the win
audreyt Friday, March 19th at 3:13PM EST (link)What? I do not want BIG government. I get so tired of this administration trying to spend, spend, spend…take over everything, and make huge changes. We need McCain for the Re-elect. JD hayworth has already proven to the voters that he’s got a price and his morals are questionable!
Are we sure it's actually Hayworth in this poll?

JD's not sure ether
SteveLA (Diary) Thursday, March 18th at 9:32PM EST (link)Hey, JD had to prove he’s old enough to play sports, contact ones without a helmet it seems, so he thinks it’s just dandy that His Obamaness prove he’s really who he says he is. Seems patently fair and so very well reasoned by JD. Love that smirk by the way JD.
So just as a short refresher on how wonderful JD’s line of reasoning is, this classic interview with “Tingles” Mathews is submitted for viewing pleasure.
