Unless true conservatives come out in droves between now and next Tuesday and defend Newt Gingrich, conservatism as a movement could be destroyed or set back for a generation. Mark Levin was especially critical of guys like Bob Dole who was part of the problem.
—————————————————————————————-
Conservative talk radio star Mark Levin offered a passionate defense of Republican presidential candidate Newt Gingrich on his show Thursday.
Levin was upset at recent attacks against the former House speaker by GOP pundits on the Internet and by Republican politicians in various public forums.
“If this is what the conservative movement has come to, then count me out,” Levin said. “I am not a special pleader for Gingrich. Newt Gingrich and I aren’t friends. We aren’t even acquaintances.”
But Levin took issue with those who cite a TV interview from 1988 as evidence that Gingrich broke from former President Ronald Reagan. “Newt Gingrich didn’t trash Ronald Reagan,” Levin said. “He said going forward we need tactical changes from the Reagan era, not changes in principle, not that we shouldn’t promote Reagan.”
Levin then played an audio clip from the interview to prove his point. “Reaganism is a value system which carried 49 states last time [in the 1984 election],” Gingrich said. “It’s fairly inclusive, more than just a personality issue.”
Republicans must remember that Gingrich was the first GOP speaker of the House in almost 50 years, Levin said. “He was fighting Democrats to win the House of Representatives before most of the people trashing him on the Internet were old enough to wipe themselves … before most of the commentators on TV were switching from Democrats to Republicans.”
It’s OK to criticize Gingrich, Levin said. “But don’t count me among those who are going to destroy the man,” he continued. “You can disagree with the man on substance, but don’t turn him into some Marxist, Reagan-hating mental case, because he’s not.”
Levin is particularly angry with New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie, an aggressive Romney supporter. “I was appalled when the two-year governor of New Jersey, who has done absolutely zero for the conservative movement, gets on TV and regurgitates all the ethical bull crap thrown at Newt Gingrich when he was speaker of the House.”
Levin’s not too happy about recent criticism of Gingrich from former Sen. Bob Dole, either. “Bob Dole was part of the problem,” he said.
An underlying motive drives the GOP criticism of Gingrich, Levin said. “There’s an effort to clear the path for Romney. If [Rick] Santorum was considered a threat, they’d be pulling out quotes from him and turning him into a pretzel too.”
It’s self-destructive for Republicans to launch negative commercials about Gingrich rather than focusing on President Barack Obama, Levin said. What’s most important is to defeat the establishment.
He had some choice words for Gingrich’s presidential opponent, Mitt Romney. “What was Mitt Romney doing when Newt Gingrich was speaker of the House fighting Democrats? He was running against Ted Kennedy as a self-identified progressive.”
Levin was referring to Romney’s unsuccessful bid to take former Massachusetts Sen. Kennedy’s seat away from him in 1994.
“Newt Gingrich, if he does nothing else, did more for the conservative movement than virtually everyone today who’s criticizing him,” Levin said.
To be sure, Gingrich made some mistakes in the past, Levin acknowledged. “I make no excuses for his personal life, which was a mess,” he said.
“But he has found his faith now, he has found God. Why would we act like Marxist leftists ourselves, like a bunch of frenzied nut jobs trying to turn this man into something he’s not. We would not have taken back the House of Representatives but for Newt Gingrich.”
As for those criticizing Gingrich, “What the hell did they do to take back the House of Representatives?” Levin said.

Elliot Abrams caught misleading...
WillWong (Diary) Tuesday, February 21st at 5:07PM EST (link)In Townhall magazine, they brought up Elliot Abrams misleading piece again and this time added another report from Washington Compost on the same subject. Not only are these people unrepentant…they are doubling down to destroy Newt! So in an effort to counter these, I am bringing this piece to the forefront again!
————————————————————————————————————–
So now I’ve read the Gingrich speech that is the source of all the hoopla. All seven, fine print pages worth of it exactly as it appeared in its original form.
I can only say that what Elliott Abrams wrote in NRO about Newt Gingrich based on this long ago speech is not worthy of Elliott Abrams.
Specifically, Abrams implies that Newt Gingrich was spewing mindless vitriol about Reagan on the House floor. Not only not so, it was quite to the contrary. Of President Reagan, Gingrich says:
• “Let me be clear: I have the greatest respect for President Reagan. I think he personally understands the threat of communism.” Gingrich then goes on — at Newtonian length — praising Reagan for Reagan’s understanding of Lenin, Reagan’s understanding of the real “purposes of a Soviet dictatorship” and much more. He lists and applauds Reagan repeatedly for the President’s appreciation of “the threat in a more powerful Soviet empire” and the threats posed by Communist Cuba and Nicaragua. He ranks Reagan with the great cold war presidents in protecting freedom.
In short, time after time after, Newt Gingrich — true to form — is there on the floor of the House relentlessly praising and crediting Ronald Reagan. Is it any wonder that years later Nancy Reagan would speak so publicly and warmly about “Ronnie” passing the conservative torch to Newt? Is there any wonder that Michael Reagan has stepped into the middle of this current brawl to endorse Newt?
• Abrams quotes Newt for saying in this speech that Reagan’s policies towards the Soviets are “inadequate and will ultimately fail.” This is shameful. Why? Here’s what Newt said — in full and in context:
“The fact is that George Will, Charles Krauthammer, Irving Kristol, and Jeane Kirkpatrick are right in pointing out the enormous gap between President Reagan’s strong rhetoric, which is adequate, and his administration’s weak policies, which are inadequate and will ultimately fail.”
In other words, Newt was picking up on a concern, prominent in the day and voiced by no less than Reagan’s then ex-UN Ambassador Kirkpatrick, not to mention prominent Reagan supporters Will and Kristol and the late-Mondale aide turned conservative Krauthammer, that Reagan’s anti-Communist policies could be stronger if better institutionalized and not tied as much to the Reagan persona. The entire speech focused on suggestions of how to do just that — to effectively institutionalize Reagan’s conservative beliefs in the government. Is Abrams seriously accusing Jeane Kirkpatrick and George Will of being anti-Reagan? Of spewing “insulting rhetoric” at a president everyone in Washington knew they staunchly supported? Really? Of course not. But in apparent service to the Romney campaign, in order to make Newt Gingrich appear to be doing just that, Abrams apparently quite deliberately cut out the original Gingrich reference to Will, Kirkpatrick, Krauthammer, and Kristol.

Levin is masterful
bluerose75 Friday, January 27th at 3:41PM EST (link)Mark Levin and Rush are truly separates among the others. Rush today as well was pointing out the problem Mitt will have with Romneycare and how bad of an issue that the GOP will lose with Romney because of his Romneycare being essentially the birth of Obamacare. Romney’s answer to me was pathetic and blantantly liberal garbage. Santorum did an excellent job exposing as Rush pointed out. Rush also took issue with Romney’s characterization of Santorum as being angry…Rush thought he was angry because he had to sit through Romney’s ineffectual defense of Romneycare will still saying he is conservative and could hammer Obama with Obamacare.
Levin is also classic. He san see through all the political pundits like Rove, Hume, Abrams, McCain, Morris, Coulter and others who is knows are full of it!! Newt was the first Speaker in 50 years he was the instrument by which we even have the majority today due to his abilily back in the 90s to orchestrate such a shift! He was clearly a Reagan conservative and Levin recognizes the utter hyprocrisy from the Establishment and it makes him angry like so many other conservatives. He is right the DC Elites could care less about the conservatives and Christie is a an overweight clueless wonder who if he had to pick to A, B, C or D as the first letter of the word conservative he would pick L for liberal. He has done nothing in NJ except fight with the teachers but outside of that he is no different than any other Northeast RINO! Levin sees that and knows how the liberals, who are the minority of the GOP, are trying to force the majority to accept a liberal RINO from Mass.
Levin is right is it is okay to criticize Newt but to destroy a man with blantant lies is a disgrace!
Christie is a an overweight clueless wonder
WillWong (Diary) Friday, January 27th at 8:12PM EST (link)I like that!
BR75, we have our work cut out for us this weekend…..to help push Speaker Gingrich over the top in Florida!!!!
there was alot of early voting in FL ahead of the debates
circlegranch Friday, January 27th at 8:21PM EST (link)so there’s a thread of hope that coming off the huge SC win, Floridians rode the victory wave and voted before the debates
we're at the crossroads again and its time for big voices to endorse
circlegranch Friday, January 27th at 8:40PM EST (link)Limbaugh, Levin, Palin have sat on their hands while the true conservatives in the race have fallen away. Santorum is not going to get enough momentum to go anywhere. When it was time for either he or Perry to go, in his arrogance, Santorum hung on even knowing Perry had the money (and potential to raise a whole lot more) and organization to keep on Romney’s heels. That’s all water under the bridge. Today, we’re at a the final point of no return. If something big doesn’t happen very positively for Newt in the next 3 days, Romney wins FL and then there’s no stopping him. The big megaphones at Drudge and elsewhere will taunt and sneer and revel in the victory and this thing is over.
O’Reilly doesn’t sound too happy either about what Team Romney has done to Newt. All these guys need to get a game plan in place and quick. Rush lives in FL; he can make some appearances on the campaign stops this weekend. We have a country to save; surely he can pass on golf.
Santorum went home to file his taxes. He’s out of money and the polls are telling him the same story they told Perry in SC. He’s done and if Romney beats Newt by a wide margin, the wind’s at his back and we get 4 more years of Obama.
Perry seems a much larger person than Santorum
WillWong (Diary) Friday, January 27th at 8:56PM EST (link)Heard that Santorum is hanging around just in case Newt implodes….That is sad if true!
Herman Cain Endorsed Newt!
WillWong (Diary) Monday, January 30th at 3:03AM EST (link)Here is one of your big voices answering the call!
Let's Hope that Sarah Palin will come out and say....
WillWong (Diary) Friday, January 27th at 8:52PM EST (link)If I am a Floridian, I would vote for Newt Gingrich! Maybe there is some clause in her contract with Fox that fprbids her to endorse anyone outright and she had found a way! He He He!
I think that Sarah's already played her hand.
sandiegovoter Saturday, January 28th at 4:22PM EST (link)She’s joined the ranks of the malcontents. Which is sad. It shows that she has already forgotten that Romney campaigned harder for her and McCain than any of the other Republicans who are still in the race, including Gingrich.
I guess Sarah is one of those “friends” that you never do a favor for because she doesn’t return the favor.
Sarah repaid McCain already
WillWong (Diary) Saturday, January 28th at 6:24PM EST (link)By endorsing McCain in 2010.
She doesn’t owe Romney nothing!
2010 was very similiar to 1994
sevanclaig Monday, January 30th at 9:45AM EST (link)The foundation of your premise Sandy, believing such a thing about Sarah Palin and the obligations to repay favors, is really skewed.
Try this- not only having regained control of the House but the nationwide 2010 sweep in whole would not have happened had it not been for very likes of Sarah Palin. She brought a lot more voice of opposition at the liberal prog machine than your little comment section posts did.
As did Newt Gingrich and his American Solutions efforts.
That’s right, I said it. Newt helped us engineer the 2010 sweep as well. I know specific examples of people whose only knowledge of the innumerable errors in Obamacare and other Obama / Pelosi / Reid policies came from the intelligent and articulate fights of Newt Gingrich, Breitbart, Palin, Allen West, Levin, Rush, Thomas Sowell, etc..
I do not remember anyone ever telling the conservatives of this country that we should see or listen to Mitt Romney about about conservatism or Obamacare- except perhaps by Obama himself.
In 2010 we and those other true conservatives were campaigning for our country’s future- just as in 1994, just as we are today in these primaries, The only thing Romney was doing in 2010 was gearing up for the following years Iowa caucus.
Boehner, et al from your county dogcatcher and commisioner up thru 50 state legislatures to the House and Senate in DC should be the “friends” begging to repay Newt and Sarah and Allen West- not the other way around.
Palin has nearly endorsed Gingrich, might as well make it official
Common_Cents (Diary) Saturday, January 28th at 6:52PM EST (link)especially for FL, Newt needs a boost there to keep the race alive.
Santorum should man up like Perry did too.
Obama=Golfer in Chief, Leading from,
behind, the Back Nine.Leaders don’t create movements. Movements create leaders. Get involved. Your future depends on it.
Govt “invests” YOUR tax money for POLITICAL return rather than economic return.
Agreed, CommonCents.
avagreen Saturday, January 28th at 7:50PM EST (link)On both statements, but I think Romney is paying Santitorium to stay in the race.
Wish Palin would come out and endorse Newt. Her go-to crowd over at Iowntheworld would get behind whoever she endorses. I think. I quit posting over there when they went ape*hit over destroying anything Texas or Perry.
But, they do have their use. They also idolized Bachmann and she endorsed who? Rombot? Hmmmm……..don’t know how they’ll flip as I think of it.
Rick Perry STILL! doesn’t have or need blood. He is filled with magma.
Rick Perry uses his bare hands to hunt.
Countdown Until Obama Leaves Office.
Cain won the FL straw poll so his endorsement carries weight
circlegranch Monday, January 30th at 7:31AM EST (link)and the polling showing Mitt ahead by double digits only go as far as the 27th. Newsmax is reporting that Insider Advantage says the gap is closing.
I’m sure Palin is wearing a muzzle being a Fox contributor. If her message conflicts with their agenda, which it does, she’ll get cut off.
Santorum gets back to work today but I think alot of people look at his situation as one where perhaps being a dad should be first right now in his life.
Since Palin is a paid contributor on FOX,
annie54 Sunday, January 29th at 11:50AM EST (link)isn’t it unethical or even possibly against the rules to actually endorse?
It could be that she has stuck her neck out as far as she can. Perhaps that’s why Todd made his endorsement.
ya think?
Good point....likewise others like Hannity, Van Susteren, and Huckabee
WillWong (Diary) Sunday, January 29th at 12:13PM EST (link)have not endorse anyone.
I think Palin has stuck her neck out as far as she could. She has literally asked people to vote for Newt…..how more direct does she needs to be? If her followers cannot see that, it really makes you wonder, doesn’t it? I suspect she will continue this was all the way till the convention.
Santorum isn't as sstupid as you think.
sevanclaig Monday, January 30th at 9:54AM EST (link)Santorum is just hoping Romney can knock Newt out before his own campaign runs out of money. Who’s going to suddenly pick up a Romney sign after all of this slanderous vitriol?
No One.
Rick is at least smart enough to know that Romney will never garner any solid percentage over 30% by himself. Santorum won’t leave until at least 1 primary after an exit by Newt or Romney, just to see what scraps he could pick up.
Everyone, especially Romney, is counting on winning the general election on the wave of anti-Obama / democrat vote. The only problem with that is Romney’s proving his Alinskyite similarities to Barack and the progressive party everyday.
Sarah Palin was interrupted and cut off on Foxnews
WillWong (Diary) Monday, January 30th at 3:56AM EST (link)while telling her followers to vote for Newt and to say no to the establishment. She even mentioned that people on Foxnews a telling people that Mitt Romney will be the nominee after Florida and she was abruptly cut off….wow Foxnews must be pissed!!!!!
Which One? And, how fast?
christopher770 (Diary) Friday, January 27th at 8:54PM EST (link)Newt and Mitt are very close in most all issues. Move On Already! The biggest issue: Reduce spending. I believe the primary difference between the two candidates is the way in which they will implement or persuade congress and the senate to follow their agenda of Reducing Costs and Cutting Regulation. So the only questions to ask have yourself is, How Much Will You Cut, Where will you cut, and the absolute most important of all HOW FAST will true reform changes, etc., will be implemented.
Romney: Knows how to cut departments and spending. His position at Bain Capital proves that. There is no question about that. Over my 50 years of life, I have seen venture capital companies restructure and re-build or close many of companies. Scale it down to the bones and if it is a good product, it will rebound and grow. If not, sell the assets and move on. The primary goal is to cut and cut quickly to minimize risk with the worse case being liquidation. Is that the way you want the U.S. to be handled and polices enacted over the next four years. I will leave for you to decide. That doesn’t sound bad. Or, is it?
Newt Gingrich: 1994 Time man of the year for leading the way of bring back the house to the Republican Party after 40 years. FORTY YEARS!!! While he was House speaker, the House enacted welfare reform, passed a capital gains tax cut in 1997, and in 1998 passed the first balanced budget since 1969. Newt knows how to coalesce or bring together people for big common causes. He knows how the economy works and he knows how to implement much needed sweeping reform without killing the American People.
Both positions will get us where we want to go. With a shoot-gun that is quick and messy (Mitt) or like a bowling ball which is more steady, heavy and reaches its goal and scatters the mess out of the way (Newt). So…it’s a gun or a bowling ball.
Everything else is a completely mute point. Now…choose how you want the next four years to go. You decide. I have.

Romney is not a conservative.....
WillWong (Diary) Saturday, January 28th at 11:31PM EST (link)He admitted as much in his 1994 campaign against Ted Kennedy!
“I am a moderate and my views are progresmsive…..I am an independent and I am not running to return to Reagan Bush”
Newt is a Reagan Conservative with a lot of baggage but has the best conservative record in the last 40 years save except for Reagan himself.
I do agree with you that Newt has the ability and knowhow to bring people together for a big course.
As I have said over and over again, Romney is not electable. He is the perfect Mr. One Percent for Obama’s OWS 99% and also the Grand Daddy of Obamacare!
Romney was "Independent", not Strong Republican
WillWong (Diary) Saturday, January 28th at 11:42PM EST (link)Here is discussion of his positions over the years…….
As the Florida primary looms closer, Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney has more and more strongly identified himself as a consistent conservative and Republican voter, and in Thursday’s GOP debate he implied he always has been.
But a review of the facts paints a different picture and counters Romney’s assertions. In the past, Romney has often gone to considerable lengths to distance himself from Republicans and conservatives.
• Romney had been a lifelong independent before he decided to run for Ted Kennedy’s Senate seat in Massachusetts in 1994, the Boston Globe reported at the time.
When Romney debated Kennedy, Kennedy accused his opponent of trying to return the country to the policies of Reagan-Bush. Romney retorted: “I was an independent during the time of Reagan-Bush. I’m not trying to return to Reagan-Bush.”
• The Los Angeles Times reported that after Romney entered the ’94 Senate race, his wife Ann said: “We didn’t know a single Republican when we jumped in.”
The Times also disclosed that Romney even considered running as an independent “before rejecting the idea as impractical.”
• When House Speaker Newt Gingrich was promoting his “Contract with America” in 1994, Romney’s aides said he “had not read the document and had no plans to support it,” the Globe reported.
The Washington Times observed that Romney “criticized the Republican campaign agenda, the ‘Contract with America,’ as too partisan.”
• Brent Bozell’s Conservative Victory Committee attacked Romney in 1994 for “running away from conservative Republican themes” and espousing a “left-wing agenda.”
• Washington Post columnist David Broder observed during the 1994 Senate campaign: “Eager to show that he is a moderate independent and no ideologue, Romney stressed his support for universal health insurance and abortion rights, criticized the Republican ‘Contract with America,’ and was more outspoken than Kennedy in arguing that the Boy Scouts should not exclude homosexual youths.”
• In 1992, Romney voted in the Democratic presidential primary for Paul Tsongas, one of the most liberal Democrats in the Senate, saying Tsongas’ views were more closer to his own than Bill Clinton’s.
• Romney donated to the 1992 campaign of U.S. Rep. Dick Swett, a New Hampshire Democrat; Rep. John LaFalce, a New York Democrat; and Democrat Doug Anderson, who was running for the Senate from Utah.
Romney defended the donations, saying: “I don’t think they’re mortal sins,” according to the Boston Herald. Press reports suggested he made the donations because of personal relationships or business reasons.
• The Deseret News in Utah reported that Romney’s 2002 campaign for governor in Massachusetts “features an endorsement from a self-described ‘liberal Democrat’ — Salt Lake Mayor Rocky Anderson.”
Romney returned the favor, endorsing Anderson’s re-election campaign in 2003.
Anderson later called for the impeachment of President George W. Bush for “abuses of power” and “human rights abuses.”
• Romney in 1994 “disassociated himself from Reagan and Bush policies and said he would be independent of Republican Senate leaders,” the Boston Globe reported.
“Romney offers himself as the candidate of change. What he would change from is obvious; what he would change to is still unclear.”
During the CNN debate in Jacksonville, Romney gave listeners a more emphatic impression of his past Republican credentials, saying, “I’ve never voted for a Democrat when there was a Republican on the ballot. And — in my state of Massachusetts — you could register as an independent and go vote in (whichever) primary happens to be very interesting. And any chance I got to vote against Bill Clinton or Ted Kennedy, I took. … I have always voted for a Republican any time there was a Republican on the ballot.”
Romney also stated during the debate after being elected governor of Massachusetts he became more conservative. This statement appears more truthful. On fiscal matters then Gov. Romney and Massachusetts’ Democratically controlled legislature clashed frequently. Romney holds the state record for gubernatorial vetoes.

Giuliani Blasts Romney and Praises Gingrich.....
WillWong (Diary) Saturday, January 28th at 11:38PM EST (link)Here is Giuliani support for Newt on MSNBC….
Speaking on MSNBC’s “Morning Joe,” former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani praised Newt Gingrich and criticised Mitt Romney as a flip-floppoer.
“I’ve never seen a guy change his positions on so many things, so fast, on a dime, on everything,” Giuliani said about the former Massachusetts governor. “Pro-choice, pro-life. And pro-choice because somebody, a close friend, died, and he became pro-choice because this woman died of an abortion. Then he figures out there are embryos and he changes.
“Then he was pro-gun control,” Giuliani opined. “Fine. Then he becomes a lifetime member of the NRA. Then he was pro-cap-and-trade. Now he’s against cap-and-trade. He was pro-mandate for the whole country, then he becomes anti-mandate and he takes that page out of his book and republishes the book. I could go on and on.”
Giuliani concluded that Romney was a “man that will say anything to become president of the United States.”
Meanwhile, the 9/11 icon likened Gingrich to Ronald Reagan.
“I kind of go back to 1980 and I remember the Carter White House just dying [to run against] Ronald Reagan,” Giuliani said. “Ronald Reagan was the dumb actor, Ronald Reagan said incendiary things, Ronald Reagan was like Newt — gosh, you never knew what he was going to say and the whole world would go crazy — The New York Times would write editorials. There was Bush, greatest resume of anyone who ever ran for president, solid citizen. They got Reagan and they got trounced.”
Giuliani continued: “I think Newt has a much more consistent position as a conservative, with some real exceptions like Ronald Reagan had. Ronald Reagan signed a bill that made abortion legal in the state of California. Ronald Reagan did in fact raise taxes several times, not just as president, but also as governor of California.”
Giuliani also talked about electibility.
“It may be that Newt is appealing to some that maybe Mitt isn’t appealing to,” Giuliani explained. “There’s something wrong when you’ve been running as long as Mitt has and you’re at 25 percent, and you don’t go much below, and you don’t go much above. Seventy-five percent of the other Republicans are telling you something.”

Good for Rudy!
texasref (Diary) Sunday, January 29th at 6:19PM EST (link)I appreciate that all the big guns are coming out for our man–Limbaugh, Levin, Palin, Fred Thompson, Rudy Giuliani, Erick Erickson.

It might be closer than you think!

So now you're so desperate you're willing to take Rudy's endorsement?
In The Hook (Diary) Sunday, January 29th at 6:34PM EST (link)Talk about a pro-gun control, pro-abortion, left wing Republican. My goodness. A Guiliani endorsement should be the kiss of death for a guy trying to fashion himself the “true conservative” in this race.

mbecker908 (Diary) Sunday, January 29th at 7:05PM EST (link)conservative candidate in the field. I’m not going to rehash the 2008 discussion we had about Rudy, but given his 08 platform in the context of the race – and superimposing it into this year – he’s easily the most conservative of the lot, with an outstanding conservative record as mayor of NYC.
And, as far as “true” conservatives, there aren’t any and never have been. It’s nothing more than an epithet hurled around by ignorant fools.

Scope (Diary) Sunday, January 29th at 7:11PM EST (link)When you try to be everything to everyone, you become nothing to no one. That is Mitt Romney in a nutshell.
We’ve been reading about the desperation of the progressives to retain their power, and warned that some will come wearing the clothing of sheep, while secretly advancing the evils of really being the wolf in charge of the henhouse. Romney now appears to have even discarded the sheep costume, and is in full fanged wolf’s display, holding up his bloodied opponents carcasses for all to see.
Rudy is certainly a fiscal and national defence conservative

Romney “severely conservative”? That’s the opposite of a “compassionate conservative” like George W. Bush? Actually, we know what a severely conservative is. It’s Dick Cheney and Mitt Romney is no Dick Cheney.
Mark Levin is missing the point
entropy (Diary) Monday, January 30th at 10:33AM EST (link)With all due respect to Levin, he has gone on the deep end lately. This is the same guy who thought Michelle Bachmann could beat Obama and was qualified to be president of the United States. Are you freaking serious, Mark?
Mark is missing the point thought with regards to Newt. No one is denying that he played an instrumental role in ushering in a GOP House majority. As a strategist, his skills are apparent. But what did Newt do once he actually gained power? His erratic behavior, lack of discipline, and oversized ego, was a giant distraction that impeded the GOP’s ability to achieve policy goals. Does anyone else remember the Air Force tantrum? Or the fact that Newt got badly outmanuevered by Clinton during the government shutdown debate?
The problem with Newt has less to do with ideology than his temperament. We cannot afford to have a loose cannon as our nominee, let alone President. The leader of the free world should be stable, calm, disciplined. Newt is missing these qualities, and a lot of congressmen who actually worked with Newt know this as well.. Hence, you see their fierce opposition to a Newt nomination.
Concerns about Romney
ptamom Tuesday, January 31st at 9:40AM EST (link)I am deeply concerned about what I believe to be the misrepresentation of Romney as a conservative and as a moderate Republican in the current presidential race.
The stark difference between Romney’s views now and his record as Governor of Massachusetts should give us pause.
As a PTA mom from Maryland and a Republican volunteer in our county, I have followed Massachusetts politics via email news from www.MassResistance.org since the 2003 court redefinition of marriage in Massachusetts. Living in a “blue” state with 2 children in public schools, I have been concerned about the impact of the redefinition of marriage on public schools.
In their comprehensive report of Romney’s record entitled, “The Mitt Romney Deception”, the grass roots pro-family group Mass Resistance states “Indeed, this report will demonstrate that Romney was probably the most pro-abortion and pro-gay rights Republican official in the nation for the last decade.” The evidence is carefully documented by newspaper accounts with all sources listed at the end of their report.
Romney’s record as Governor in Masschusetts from 2003-2007 and his actions while a presidential candidate have not shown a committment to good government and have shown a willingness to exert undue influence on the media in my opinion. We are so in need of good leadership to take on the politically motivated decisions that harm so many Americans and benefit only a few. I do not feel that Romney’s record as Governor indicates a willingness to govern in that way.
I am also concerned about Romney’s choice of judges and the state of the Republican Party in Massachusetts after his tenure as Governor.

Romney’s dismal record as the Republican leader in Massachusetts
Romney pledged to build the Massachusetts Republican Party, but in fact he did almost nothing. During his tenure there were two elections for the entire Legislature (2004 and 2006). In each election the Republicans lost seats. Republicans now hold the fewest seats in the Legislature since the Civil War.
During the four years of Romney’s tenure, the number of registered Republicans in Massachusetts fell by 31,000. During that same period, the Massachusetts Democratic Party gained 30,000. “…… That means Republicans now make up 12.5 percent of the state’s voters, … according to the data released by the Secretary of State’s office. When the state elected Romney, a Republican, in 2002, the GOP made up 13.4 percent of the electorate. ”
- Boston Globe, 11/2/2006, “GOP ranks dropped by 31,000 since state elected Romney”
In the 2006 elections, most offices were not even challenged by Republican candidates. In the November general election for the six statewide Massachusetts constitutional offices there were more Green-Rainbow Party candidates on the ballot than Republicans!
The party’s slide has been so precipitous that Republicans yesterday did not contest 130 of 200 legislative seats, fielded a challenger in only three of 10 congressional districts, and put up fewer candidates for statewide office (three) than the Green-Rainbow Party (four).
- Boston Globe, 11/8/2006, “For Republicans in Mass., a feeling of out and down”

Comments from the head of the Massachusetts Republican Party, James Rappaport, who was Chairman while Romney was Governor.
“…James Rappaport, former head of the Massachusetts Republican Party held a press conference recently to announce his endorsement of Rudy Giuliani. ….. Rappaport, who served when Romney was governor, said Romney “has a strong record of showmanship as opposed to actual performance.” On his relationship with the State Legislature, “His word is no good … Mitt Romney would say one thing in a meeting and literally go out of the meeting to the press and tell the opposite story. There was no desire in the legislature to be accommodating to him because they couldn’t trust him…. Romney will be clear today on what he believes today, and he’ll be clear tomorrow on what he believes tomorrow, but they may be different things.”

Conservative media has a conflict of interest with Romney.
I believe that some conservative media, Rush Limbaugh, Sean Hannity, Ann Coulter, Laura Ingraham, Mark Levine, Rich Lowry, Hugh Hewitt, and others perpetuated a false idea during the 2008 campaign, i.e. the idea that Romney is conservative. Their scrutiny of Huckabee and McCain’s conservative credentials during the 2008 campaign was often emotional and full of highly charged, derogatory terms, while they were more silent about holes in Romney’s conservative credentials.
On Nov 16, 2006, Clear Channel Communications agreed to be acquired by Bain Capital and Thomas Lee Partners for nearly $19 billion. Bain Capital is the private equity firm founded by Mitt Romney in 1984; that he left in 1999 to head the 2002 Olympics; that he sold his majority interest in, in 2001 to run for Governor of Massachusetts; where he is still a silent partner. The sale was completed in Dec 2007 after 1 year of pending negotiations of the leveraged buyout agreement. Clear Channel owns more than 1,100 full-power AM, FM, and shortwave radio stations, twelve radio channels on XM Satellite Radio, and more than 30 television stations in the United States.

Premiere Radio Networks, which is the largest syndication company in the United States, is a wholly owned subsidiary of Clear Channel and is home to Rush Limbaugh, Glenn Beck, FOX NEWS Radio and many other talk radio shows. Premiere Radio Networks is transitioning to a new CEO Charlie Rahilly from Kraig Kitchin. Sean Hannity recently signed a large multi-market contract with Clear Channel.
The early Bain Capital team included Romney’s campaign advisor, Robert F. White. According to CNN/Money magazine’s Dec 10, 2007 article entitled “Millionaires-in-chief”, some 43% of Romney’s portfolio is currently invested in Bain Capital. On the Bain Capital website it says “Our principals are the largest single investor in each of Bain Capital’s funds,..”

Far-Righties Reality Check
daveinthed Wednesday, February 1st at 11:40AM EST (link)Most conservatives are a more moderate socially than you. You think you’re the “vast majority”, but you’re not. In fact, I’d argue that our party (and our country) would be much better off if we adopted a few sensibly moderate positions on some social issues so as to put the LIBs virtually out of business permanently.
1. abortion. Pro-Life, yes, but we will not seek to make all abortions illegal. We will require that you: have it done BEFORE the17th week. Pay for it YOURSELF. Get parental consent if you’re a minor. Yes, I know and agree with the argument that life begins at conception. But this is a unique case where TWO peoples’ liberty are at stake. So, in drawing a “solution” one uses an admittedly somewhat arbitrary “cut-off date”. Personally, I hate to think how people must feel the rest of their lives (and beyond) after doing that to their own child. But liberty is liberty and a woman’s “right” to her own body is to be taken into consideration. Allowing abortions at 20 weeks, 25 weeks or later is cruel and, in fact, unneccessary because a baby CAN survive outside the womb in many cases.
2. gun control. Most conservatives favor a ban on assault weapons and the requirement for registration of lawful firearms. Why the nut cases on the far right are against registration of guns and/or a ban on assault weapons is beyond me. Can I carry a WMD too? How ’bout an AK47? No, of course njot. We draw lines that make sense. That’s what enlightened, civil societies do. To go far-right, arguing against any sensible “gun control” is a loser for our party.
3. gay rights. Most conservatives would favor “Civil Unions” whereby same sex couples can freely enter into a union together and receive all of the same “benefits” as married couples. What’s wrong with that? Unfortunately, the left, and some on the far-right, reject that sensible solution outright. And thus, the LIBs keep pushing their agenda thorugh one step at a time.
4. drug laws. Who is the government…the so-called “conservatives” on the right to tell me what I can and can’t consume, ingest, smoke, etc…? From anabolic steroids and other “supplements”, to smoking herb or popping a pill, to whatever those imbeciles in Hollyweird do on a nightly basis, doesn’t liberty mean the freedom to live your life FREE from government intrusion, as long as you’re not stomping on the rights of others? Yes, I understand that some substances are and must be controlled. We all agree with that. But there are degrees and we as a movement are married to an ideology that allows the glorification and consumption of alcohol in our society, for example, which kills tens of thousands in our country every year, but outlaws marijuana and spends countless million$$$ trying to stop it. Dumb.
5. Euthanasia. Older folks, the chronically sick, the terminally ill should be allowed to exercise their right to personal liberty, no? Shoot, I’d argue that we could arguably make it legal across the board. Perhaps a few more of these nutcases who go off and kill a bunch of people will take advantage of that opportunity BEFORE they get the notion to kill others. Seriously. In any case, there’s no reason that someone who wants to end their own life due to old age, terminally or chronically ill, shouldn’t be able to make those decisions and arrangements. It’s called LIBERTY. Do we really want to tell them, “yes, you HAVE to live your life for another 20 years, in pain and agony, draining your life’s savings so that your kids will actually owe the bank and the hospital a DEBT when all is said and done! Why? Because we said so!”
Come on, folks. Understand what Tea Party conservatism is and embrace it. It’s about LIBERTY, not right-wing ideology at the expense of everyone when Dems keep winning and further wrecking the country every few years.
Stop threadjacking....
WillWong (Diary) Wednesday, February 1st at 1:38PM EST (link)If you want to spout your so called moderate thinking (or moral relativism), there are other threads or start your own.
daveinthered, those are not conservative positions,
Melody Warbington (rwm52) (Diary) Wednesday, February 1st at 2:06PM EST (link)far right or otherwise. I don’t know who this “we” is you’re talking about, but it sure doesn’t include conservatives.

Levin was Attacking Republican Establishment, Not the Conservative Establishment
teapartier (Diary) Wednesday, February 1st at 4:35AM EST (link)Nice post, but we have to make sure this is clear since there’s a BIG difference!
Levin is a Fool
daveinthed Wednesday, February 1st at 8:35AM EST (link)Yes, I said it. That’s right! He’s an idiot. Who says Newt is a good conservative, let alone a great one? He’s blown that. HE did that to himself. Not Romney’s ads.
Newt Gingrich wrecked his own conservative credentials the same way that he ruined his marriages and his career….by selfishly acting out. By serving NEWT.
Please, Levin and the rest of you Newt pimps. I’d FAR sooner for for Ron Paul than Newt Gingrich. For that matter, I’d vote for Santorum before I voted for Newt, the serial philanderer/couch sitter/Freddie peddler/Ryan basher/class warfare-spewer. And of course, Mitt Romney is the premiere “Private Sector” candidate with a successful track record and Newt…well, Newt is Newt. A classic Washington insider and career bureaucrat who thyinks he’s smarter than everyone else and has the right as a “conservative” to stick his finger in our eye anytime it serves HIM or his pocketbook well. Sorry, won’t work.
Mark Levin can take Newt and his big FAT, whiny, sniveling @$$, along with his non-conservative/philandering ways, and stick ‘em where the sun don’t shine, as far as I’m concerned. Most conservatives REJECT Newt Gingrich outright and reject Levin’s incessant trashing of Romney. The few who are stuck in the mud continue to shill for Newt because they hate Romney so much. Why? Because they are deranged (RDS) and seem to think that most of us are like them…with a narrow view of what “conservatism” means.
Romney/Ryan ’12
Palin at Energy
Petraeus at Defense
Newt at Education
Rudy G. at Justice
Levin isn't a fool
In The Hook (Diary) Wednesday, February 1st at 8:37AM EST (link)But like a lot of conservatives today, his rage against Romney is producing temporary hysterical blindness. Come the summer and fall, that condition will fade.
And dude, we need to keep Palin and Rudy out of politics in general. No way do they get in the Cabinet. Ever. Same with Newt. Petraeus is probably going to call it a career after he’s done at the CIA. Shame that, but he’s been fantastic and deserves to ride off into the sunset.
“Hello? You play to win the game.”
Support conservatives that can win.

Cabinet Members
daveinthed Wednesday, February 1st at 10:44AM EST (link)I disagree wholeheartedly. Why would you say “keep Palin and Rudy out of politics”? That doesn’t even make sense. They are EXCELLENT conservatives and both have been and are heavily involved in “politics”.
And I couldn’t care less if Rudy has a few “moderate” positions. In fact, as a libertarian at heart, I welcome them. Palin is a serious person. If you’ve been bamboozled to think otherwise, I’m very sorry to hear that. She would make for an EXCELLENT Energy Secretary. Rudy would bring gravitas and competence to the administration in any role, but as Justice Dept, he could do the most good, imo.
Romney/Ryan ’12 is the best ticket, imo. I know that people are pining for Rubio, but can we let the guy cure or age a little? Good grief. He’s got plenty of time. Ryan knows far more than even Sen. Rubio about what ails this country and how to fix it. He would be an incredible addition to the ticket and would act as a liason to the Congress. We need Rubio in Congress helping pass a fiscally conservative agenda. jmo.
Tea Party Conservatism
daveinthed Wednesday, February 1st at 10:35AM EST (link)Sorry for the harsh language in my last post. I get very angry at those on the FAR RIGHT who disparage, trash and try to chase away moderate conservatives from the GOP. Let me tell you all something. The Tea Party are MODERATE conservatives. They are not right-wing nuts or evangelicals, for the most part. They are for individual liberty and economic freedom, which in some cases flies in the face of those folks on the far-right…mainly the “individual liberty” part.
The far-righties, for lack of a better term, seem to think that THEIR views are the dominant view in the conservative movement and the Mitt Romneys, Chris Christies, Tim Pawlentis, Jon Huntsmans, GWBushes, Bob Doles, John McCains of the world should be rejected, shamed, called names and tarnished. This is not a “conservative” view nor is it conservative behavior to admonish someone because they agree 80% but not 99% or 100% with you. Real conservatives, like Tea Partiers, are concerned with the free market, with economic prosperity and with individual liberty. Romney represents them well in these respects. In fact, it was the BOSTON TEA PARTY, remember? Yes, the people of Massoftaxes had the first Tea Party. Romney is doing well with them and the more they see him, the more they like him.
People have been misrepresenting Tea Party conservatism with regularity, both from the right and in the lamestream media. The claim is to tie “Tea Party” conservatism with “southern” conservatism. And that’s simply not the case. The Tea Party is actually an eclectic, diverse group of conservatives and moderates, with a few liberals thrown in, from all over the country. Tea Party conservatism is fiscally conservative and more moderate socially in that personal liberty is paramount to them. In this way, they love Ron Paul’s views. But Paul has cornered himself as an extremist on foreign policy. That appeals only to the far LEFT. His point is well taken, that we need to cut back our “overseas excursions” and wars, to be sure. But his extreme view (Clear ‘em all OUT NOW!!! We’re to blame!!!!) is over the top and not acceptable to many conservatives and Tea Partiers.
With regard to the far-righties, one can name at least 4 or 5 things that individuals are “not allowed” to do TO THEMSELVES in the far-right, non-Tea Party wing of the conservative movement. These folks are a small minority in the party but speak as if they’re the vast majority. They’re not and the sooner they realize it and join the rest of us (see Florida results) in accepting a few sensibly “moderate” positions, the better we will be as a party and as a nation.
We all know the list…abortion, gun control, drug laws, gay rights, even euthanasia. If the GOP were to adopt SENSIBLY moderate positions on all of these things, we could become a permanent majority and the LIBs would be virtually out of business. As it is, however, we bow to the far-righties and we have this never-ending battle where we win a few, lose a few and the LIBs wreck the country whenever they take full control (’92 – ’94, ’07-’10).
Tea Party conservatism IS sensibly moderate conservatism. Embrace it because that’s actually where REAL conservatism lies…the kind that puts an emphasis on FREE markets and PERSONAL LIBERTY.
Toledo radio station cancels Mark Levin show bec. he won't apologize re: Ron Paul remarks
katesmith (Diary) Saturday, February 18th at 4:51PM EST (link)Feb. 17, 2012, “Mark Levin taken off Toledo radio station for disagreeing with Ron Paul,” Examiner.com, Joe Newby. The program director at the Toledo station, Brian Wilson, is a Ron Paul fan, ordered Levin to apologize for some remarks, Levin refused, now radio station has a new show on called Free Talk Live which supposedly is pro Paul.
