Erick’s Red Hot said No, John, Kay is not Acceptable.
As a Texas voter, I agree.
I think she’s a good (not great) Senator and may/may not be an improvement in the Governor’s mansion over Rick Perry, but her selection as VP will hurt the McCain campaign:
-
She is Pro-choice. That will deflate the buzz in the social conservative ranks. We (many, not all) are lining up behind McCain knowing that America needs him to win as an Obama victory will be disastrous to social conservative goals. Choosing KBH as VP will make the choice between the two camps much less distinct for Social Conservative.
-
We need a solid win in November to quash the ‘stolen election’ meme. If you see a squeaker I’m predicting riots in urban America. This election campaign is increasingly looking like a solid McCain win over the incredible lightness of the empty (Communist leaning, Terrorist supporting) suit. KBH on the ticket will move this back towards a very close win or possible loss.
-
She’s been my Senator and has been competent, but not reliable on Conservative issues. Unlike Cornyn, I constantly get the impression that she votes on the Right side of issues reluctantly and only after sampling the air for direction and even then has to be nudged to take action. She is not a take charge leader in my book. Should McCain win – even after 2 terms – Hillary will shred KBH in any future campaign.
-
I argued in a comment a few days ago Did I just step into “Bizarro” RedStatethat “slipping into” identity politics and choosing a woman -for this win only- would be ok, but only if the woman in question was prepared to run the ship. Sorry, I don’t see Kay as ready to lead this country.

I am okay with KBH
Change Jar Conservative (Diary) Wednesday, August 27th at 9:33AM EST (link)And I say that as a pro-life evangelical.
If she moderates just a bit on her pro-choice stands, she will be fine.
She got a 7% rating from NARAL which is not knocking down the pro-choice door.
She is essenially, a GOP version demographically of Hillary and would be an easy landing point for many of those disaffected voters.
On the issues has here listed as:
Opposes Abortion Rights
Opposes Affirmative action
Strongly opposes gay marriage
Favors teacher led prayer
Favors death penalty
Strongly favors mandatory 3 strike sentencing
Strongly favors gun ownership rights
Strongly favors privatized social security
Strongly opposses illegals getting citizenship.
Strongly opposses higher taxes
So she’s very conservative across the board, but she “opposses abortion” instead of “strongly opposses abortion.”

She's over 90% ACU lifetime
bk (Diary) Wednesday, August 27th at 9:36AM EST (link)so it’s not like she’s Lincoln Chafee.
But I don’t think it matters; everyone in Texas expects her to run for TX governor in 2010.
And she is good where McCain falters
Change Jar Conservative (Diary) Wednesday, August 27th at 9:38AM EST (link)Seems like she is good at he conservative issues where McCain isn’t.
And with McCain’s 100% pro-life record, I can’t see people turning away here … but that’s just me.

No, no, no...
wsjreader (Diary) Wednesday, August 27th at 10:04AM EST (link)I want a woman VP, and I’m pro choice. But Hutchinson? Absolutely a disaster.
She’s another boring senator without much accomplishment and no charisma whatsoever.
Image wise, it’s a disaster to put her together with a grumpy grandpa, McCain.
McCain should not pull out such a trick and anticipate Hillary’s female loyalists will come into his folder. To many of these diehards, it’s another insult from male-dominated political world. In their view, Obama is an inferior, unqualified candidate because of his race, they don’t want another crappy woman VP candidate who is in pale with Clinton from every angle.
I want Sarah Palin, or even Whitman etc, not this dull Huckintson. Just my two cents.
If it will be Whitman
bk (Diary) Wednesday, August 27th at 10:16AM EST (link)he might as well go with Lieberman.

Freedoms Truth (Diary) Wednesday, August 27th at 10:40AM EST (link)and KBH is not the top-drawer candidate you need for VP.

Our VP will not out hype Obama
Change Jar Conservative (Diary) Wednesday, August 27th at 11:45AM EST (link)I wrote a diary on KBH but let me just say that I think that Clinton voters have lots of good reasons to come here if KBH is the VP.
Give Hillary a non-president Obama to run against but still break a glass ceiling.

If you want a pro-choice VP, pick Rudy.
mbecker908 (Diary) Wednesday, August 27th at 4:13PM EST (link)He’s actually accomplished something and he’s a heavyweight.
KBH is over her head as a Senator.
Theres definitely an increased buzz
SirGladiator (Diary) Wednesday, August 27th at 4:35PM EST (link)About Kay Hutchison lately, hopefully it’s the McCain campaign preparing us for him picking a woman running mate. Kay isn’t my first choice, I’m not really comfortable with her position on abortion, I can’t even really figure out what it IS, but regardless of whether or not he picks Kay certainly McCain must pick a woman running mate to win over those Hillary supporters and Indpendent women, so at least he’s moving in the right direction with this talk of Hutchison. Hopefully soon the talk will go from Senator to Governor, and from Texas to Alaska, and then we’ll have a female running mate we can all be fired up about, and who can win this election for McCain.
she would not IMO be a good pick but
kyle8 (Diary) Wednesday, August 27th at 4:42PM EST (link)she is a pretty reliable conservative Senator. Leave her in the Senate, we need her.

TX is going for the GOP anyway, so how does she help?
Haley37 (Diary) Wednesday, August 27th at 5:23PM EST (link)Pawlenty or Romney might bring you another state in the Midwest or help you solidify your support in the West.
KB Hutchinson won’t bring any excitement to the ticket nor a new state.
She’s a BAD choice.
Roe v Wade
Steph C (Diary) Wednesday, August 27th at 7:26PM EST (link)There’s more to Roe v Wade than abortion rights. People tend to forget that in the clamor to get rid of abortion on demand… which I totally agree needs to go, so don’t jump down my throat.
However, there are matters pertaining to birth control that are in that decision as well. If you want to overturn Roe v Wade, fine and dandy, but do you want to stop women from having any choices in birth control, includng the pill? Women everywhere are not going to stand for that and it won’t be just the liberal ones. More than likely, there will be a lot of potential dads on that bandwagon, too.
So, don’t rain on KBH too much over some pro-choice positions. Concetrate on the other things that might be drawbacks, instead.

but Steph....
Attack Mode (Diary) Wednesday, August 27th at 7:33PM EST (link)…the position is that Roe v. Wade is wrong because it is law by judicial fiat. The position has always been that we repeal Roe v. Wade and give it back to the States…if the State refuse to make laws the Federal Gov’t will have to and at least then the people have a say in what is law instead of being governed by an oligarchy.

Yeah, but...
Steph C (Diary) Wednesday, August 27th at 8:11PM EST (link)why can’t the states set up something before it’s overturned? Is there something stopping the states doing that? Of course not, since most already do have some laws on it. The problem really is that some states would go completely backwards and some states want to tell the rest of the states what to do when it comes to abortion on demand.
Or would you rather most or all your close female relatives and friends of child bearing age to suddenly be felons? While your point is the judicial fiat, I don’t see a good alternative at this time, without a lot more due consideration for women, simply because the states would wrangle endlessly about who is right and who is wrong or we’d still end up with abortion on demand and paying for it with our tax dollars, too.
The only real solution is if the government gets out of it completely at all levels and leave people to tend to their own souls in that respect. Somehow, I just don’t see that happening, neither the right or the left. You can’t force people to do what’s right. It’s something each individual has to come to on their own or it’s meaningless.

"Completely Backwards"?
wpc Thursday, August 28th at 6:15AM EST (link)By states going “completely backwards” do you mean the ones making laws to protect innocent children?
Your last paragraph sounds very pro choice as well.
What about random murders, should people tend to their own soul in that regard?
