Romans 5:6-8
For while we were still helpless, at the right time Christ died for the ungodly.
For one will hardly die for a righteous man; though perhaps for the good man someone would dare even to die.
But God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.
For those not following the controversy arising from David Letterman’s “joke” about Sara Palin’s daughter, here it is in a nutshell. While what he said about a 14 year old girl is repulsive, he has apologized, and the Palin family has accepted it.
There are two things we can do when someone has wronged us. We can forgive them or we can let it consume us. When someone is truly sorry for what they have done, aka repentance, the only option we have as Christians is forgiveness. While it may be tempting to smell blood in the water and try to take down someone who we perceive as hostile to one of our friends, we need to look upward to what our Father has done for us. The words of Jesus himself tell us to ask the Father to “Forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us.”
It is so easy to look at what someone else has done and want to take vengeance on them. It is when we look at ourselves and all that we have done to transgress against God, and the grace, the undeserved forgiveness, that the Father has bestowed upon us, that we see that we have no other option than to forgive. I think we can all follow the example of the Palin family in this matter.

Forgive: Yes. Fire Letterman: Yes.
RborisT (Diary) Tuesday, June 16th at 4:02PM EST (link)Thanks for this post. I agree that Sarah was right to forgive Letterman, though his apology was plainly insincere. Carrying anger hurts the carrier most.
But while we’re being as harmless as doves let’s also be wise as serpents. Letterman knows and acts like he’s in a war. His intention with the “joke” is to damage Palin, whom he rightly recognizes as the enemy of all that he believes.
Conservatives should be doubly aware of this reality, for we know that we fight Powers and Principalities.
I think the right approach here is to confront those who pay Letterman to make jokes about raping young girls. I have done so here:

I am glad for the opportunity to stand up for the Palins. They have taken plenty of hard shots on our behalf.
We may forgive, but let’s not forget; Our enemy prowls, seeking whom he may devour.

wayneinnh (Diary) Wednesday, June 17th at 6:43AM EST (link)Forgiveness does not mean there is not to be any repercussions for your actions. A good friend of mine lost his mother to a drunk driver. He was chosen to give the victim’s impact statement at the sentencing. The anger could have easily consumed them for the rest of their lives, Instead, during the statement he forgave the man on behalf of the family. While the man had the families forgiveness, the state still sentenced him to prison.
Jon 14:6 –
Jesus said to him, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life; no one comes to the Father but through Me.”
