This is just the sort of bias against Sarah Palin and her family that is de rigeur in the Old Media. CBS seemed taken aback in an April 6 report that Governor Sarah Palin could possibly still be relatively popular “despite the negative news” that she has been confronted with of late. But all the “negative news” that CBS is so sure should torpedo Palin is little else but the soap opera of family struggles, none of it is based on any substantive issue that is a result of her actual efforts in office. It appears as if CBS wants to see Palin destroyed because some of her extended family have seen troubled times of late and not on the actual work she’s done as governor.
Is CBS really that empty of substance that they’d ignore the real and important issues of Palin’s governing and focus only on Bristol boyfriend Levi’s snotty appearance on some meaningless TV gossip show as a way to rate the governor’s work as chief executive of the state of Alaska? Can they not separate the actual work of a governor from the side-show of her family?
Or more to the point, would they rather not so separate the family from the job?
The headline sums up the astonished gossips at CBS quite well:
Palin Popularity High Despite Latest News — Hovering At 60 Percent At Home; Negative News On Extended Family, Acquaintances Not Hurting Her
Can’t you just hear the jaws dropping at CBS? Apparently, CBS feels that because a teenaged girl was dumb enough to get herself pregnant by a lout without a job or a direction in life, we should throw her governor mom out on her ear. Does any one else see the disconnect in this?
CBS revisits the salacious details of Levi’s trip to the empty wasteland of the Tyra Banks show, saying “eyebrows were raised” as he did so. The CBS piece goes on to detail all the he-said-she-said stories about Levi, Bristol, Tripp and the legal troubles of Palin’s sister-in-law. Sentence after sentence, paragraph after paragraph of this inconsequential gossip is juxtaposed against CBS’ amazement that Governor Palin still has that 60% approval rating.
And then this meaningless tidbit:
Add to the personal drama a political hit from former running mate John McCain, who hedged on endorsing her for the 2012 Republican presidential nomination when given the chance on “Meet The Press” last month, saying he’d “have to see who the candidates are and what the situation is at the time.”
But, after reading and re-reading this CBullSpit report, one cannot escape the feeling that something is missing from the investigation of Governor Palin’s work as governor and her approval rating.
What is missing is any discussion at all about Governor Palin’s budgeting, her healthcare policies, her plans for the energy sector, her work with the legislature. In fact there isn’t any mention at all of what she’s done as governor. There is no true measure of her approval rating as chief executive anywhere in the piece. To CBS, it appears as if the SOLE criteria upon which to base any assessment of her work as as governor should be her family troubles.
CBS wants Palin’s executive work to be judged by the family struggles of her sister-in-law, Levi, grandson Tripp, and daughter Bristol. So they are amazed that Palin is still looked upon favorably despite their own best efforts to drag her and her family through the mud. “But… Palins’ approval rating is over 60 percent in Alaska, so she’s hardly out in the cold among her home state’s voters,” CBS says in astonished summation.
Now, I seem to recall a certain president that cavorted his way from Arkansas to the White House treating women as object and humidors throughout. I also seem to recall the left screaming that attention to Clinton’s sexual dalliances was “not relevant” to the job he was doing as president. They wanted his personal comportment separated from his job as president. Yet now we have CBS essentially reversing that quotient by focusing only on Palin’s family troubles and not on her job as governor.
I don’t know about you but that seems just a tad hypocritical, doesn’t it?
There is one lesson that CBS learned well from President Clinton, though. They picked up his lessons on the politics of personal destruction quite well, now didn’t they?
On a side note, I would like to say a word about the AP photo that CBS used to illustrate this story (the photo I appended to this post). It is the perfect example of a subtle slam on the governor. Look at that picture. It seems haughty, as if she is turning away from the viewer as if to say, “Yeah, so what? I’m better than you.” It is almost a stuck-up, self-satisfied demeanor evinced by Palin when considered in light of the story. It is a perfect example of a choice of a picture made in a subtle attempt to make her look bad.

smitch61 Thursday, April 9th at 7:06AM EST (link)Bring it on lefties. I cannot wait to see the Obama- Palin debate. I’m telling you, if she decides to run she will be a force to be reckoned with. She will wipe the floor with that One.

Thanks Sarah for the cover.

Media bias
tennreps (Diary) Thursday, April 9th at 11:09AM EST (link)against Palin will never end. With what they have done to her and her family (check out O’Reilly last night-isn’t he on our side) I would “take my baseball bat and go home”. And then I would think twice about sharing my state’s oil with people who would wipe the floor with my family. Shameful, the way she has been treated.
Be careful with O'Reilly!
azaeroprof (Diary) Thursday, April 9th at 11:49AM EST (link)As much as I enjoy watching The Factor and agree with O’Reilly about 90% of the time, he does seem to look for ways to “prove his independence.” And his ego is pretty big, which seems to drive his borderline negative Palin coverage. She didn’t come on his show during the campaign (or since), and he barely veils his contempt for her for not doing that. Notice, too, that he often gives Obama a little extra leeway since he did his penance at the O’Reilly altar.
The bias against Palin will go to extremes CBS hadn't thought of
TNJim (Diary) Thursday, April 9th at 1:13PM EST (link)if she proves to be even a minor threat to Obama’s re-election chances. Same goes for Jindal, Romney, Huckabee, any GOP candidate that might appear to make the slightest inroads against Obama in 2012. As far as Levi is concerned his actions more so than his words put me in mind of a male golddigger. Now I don’t mean to imply that gaining fame as the governor’s daughter’s boyfriend/ fiancee was always on his mind, he may have truly loved Bristol at some point, but his actions here lately just seem indicate he’s trying to gain his own 15 minutes off the Palins one way or the other. If it’s on the plus side fine, if it’s on the negative side, fine too.
It wouldn’t surprise me a bit if it turns out someone like a MoveOn, a Soros type, or other leftist institution or person is slipping a few bucks his way to go on shows like Tyra Banks’ to talk down the Palins. If he really wanted to work things out with Bristol I don’t think he’d be doing this.

texas214 (Diary) Thursday, April 9th at 11:34AM EST (link)I happen to agree with mcCain on the subject of Palin for president. We should wait and see what the driving issue and mood of the country is in late’11 and early ’12. Palin is an attractive candidate, however she may not have the skill set or temperment needed at that moment in history to win.
After 4 years of on the job training for Zero, probably with poor results, we don’t need to try to “out Obama” the Dems with our version of an up and coming political star. America may not be ready for more of the same with a different agenda (even if it is an agenda America wants and needs). My guess we need to run a candidate that exudes an air of confidence and garners respect because there needs to be a substantive debate on what has made this country great and where we are going as a country.
Defend her? yes we should defend her and demand equal treatment in the media. Does she have a role to play? yes. Is she the best bet for POTUS????? to be decided.
You're absolutely right, tex...
azaeroprof (Diary) Thursday, April 9th at 11:56AM EST (link)and if Zero’s popularity is still high in late ’11 or early ’12 (which it may well be if the economy comes back DESPITE his best efforts), we’ll probably see some of the ‘young stars’ of the GOP like Palin and Jindal sit out and shoot for ’16.
I’ve got a Palin ’12 sticker on my car. If the primary were today, that’s where my vote would be. But mostly, the sticker is there as a statement defending her from the unfair attacks and to publicly display my lack of support for the current socialist-in-chief.
I do believe that she would make a great POTUS at some point, but to win the election, it will have to be the right electoral circumstances.
This will probably play out as it did in '80
texas214 (Diary) Thursday, April 9th at 12:14PM EST (link)We won with Reagan because of the trust and the ability to discuss the direction of the country factor. If we want to win we should be studying that election and looking for someone that has the same selling points Reagan had (there will never be another Reagan) without trying to find the “next Reagan”.
Can you imagine what would have happened if we tried to run the GOP’s version of Carter at that moment, by that I mean a young, attractive, conservative populist with little national experience. I’m not so sure we would have won.
Right scenario...
azaeroprof (Diary) Thursday, April 9th at 12:52PM EST (link)but remember that in ’80, Reagan was an OLD, attractive, conservative populist with little national experience. On the national stage, all he had done was run one unsuccessful presidential primary race and given a bunch of speeches. Much of the public wavering on Reagan centered around uncertainty of his ability to handle international affairs. His selling points were his unwavering commitment to conservative principles and his ability to communicate those principles.
Sarah may not be the right person ultimately for ’12, but she has participated in(though not “run”) a national presidential campaign, and she has shown some ability to communicate conservative principles and to be committed to them in her own life and experience.
If you see ANYONE out there with the Reagan selling points who could be viable in ’12, I’d love to hear it. But, unfortunately, I’m not certain that person exists. Fred Thompson’s close, but not sure he has the fire in his belly. Newt shows flashes, but carries way too much baggage to get elected. Then who?
Newt, Romney and maybe Guilliani
texas214 (Diary) Thursday, April 9th at 5:34PM EST (link)Newt – best on the talking points, the divorce thing is an issue, however if my recollection is correct Reagan’s personal life was also an issue because of the divorce issue. No question he would destroy Obama in a debate.
Romney – sort of fits your OLD, attractive, conservative with little national experience.
Guilliani – has a great message if he would just quit equating all issues with 9/11. Americans prefer to look forward, not back. If he ran for and won the governorship in NY, it would carry weight.
Maybe others who i’m not thinking of.

I will send around an email to my girlfriends if anyone would tell me who their advertisers are. The talk show trash is normal I don’t know one person that even watches those, but this is upsetting that a real news show is talking about her adult daughters ex-boyfriend appearing on a talk show.
