Remember this report from our nation’s history?
CNN (Continental News Network) Boston, 1773: The city of Boston canceled a proposed protest over tea taxes today, citing the fear that too many people dressed as Indians would be gathered near the wharves. Organizers expressed sadness over the cancellation, but meekly returned to their homes fearful of upsetting the officers of the Crown. Taxmen breathed a sigh of relief as the tar and feathers were put away not to be used this day.
You don’t remember that pre-revolutionary history? I should say you shouldn’t, because it didn’t happen. But flash forward a few hundred years and you’ll find it is happening today in Cape Coral, Florida where city officials canceled a tax day tea party gathering because they “feel too many people could show-up.”
That’s right, folks, the God-given, long-held American right to assemble and protest the actions of our government has been canceled due to too much popularity of the protest.
And what does it come down to? Money. You see, the city officials want an insurance policy taken out so that organizers can cover any loss that might occur as a result of the rally. And those insurance policies cost hundreds of dollars.
The tea party organizers of Cape Coral, though, aren’t the only ones to find this restriction of their free speech and rights to assemble. Tea party organizers all across the country have begun to find out just how difficult, if not impossible, it is to be “allowed” to exercise their God-given right to speak their minds against government excess and criminality. City governments all across the country are charging fees for “permits,” forcing organizers to pay out huge sums for “insurance policies,” and binding tea party organizers in all sorts of government red tape.
In many instances, organizers are being told that they aren’t “allowed” to hold rallies on government property. Imagine that? We, the taxpayers of the city/state/federal government aren’t “allowed” to gather on property that our own taxes paid for.
And then there are the “permits” required to reserve the day, arrange the police protection, and clean up afterward. Often those “permits” can only be applied for at certain times a year, precluding any spontaneous assembly. Also, these “permits” can be denied with no reason stated quashing at birth any plan to exercise the right of assembly.
Here one might wonder how it is that we so often see those lefties appearing on our TV sets engaging in their many organized protests? Don’t the flotsam and jetsam of the far left seem to have large protests all the time? One might be drawn to imagine that the government is involved in some sort of grand conspiracy to allow those with anti-American sentiment, the moonbats of the left, to march with impunity. But, hold the tinfoil hats, won’t you? Because the wackjobs of anti-war ilk and the shrill, circus acts of the Code Pinkos are expected to cut through the same red tape the tea party organizers have been confronted with. The lefties are just better at it.
You see, contrary to popular conception, the far left has some deep-pocketed backers (your George Soros types, unions and even government funds) and a raft of organizations that do “protests” as a full time job. Their protest marches and rallies are far from spontaneously organized. These groups are thoroughly knowledgeable about the red tape and governmental hoops through which they must jump to carry off a successful protest assembly. After all, the hatemongers of the left are intimately intertwined with city governments all across the country. They understand what needs to be done because, by and large, city officials used to belong to, or belong still to the sorts of groups that plan lefty protests. Your new president is one of them. Being part of government, these leftie protest marchers help write the rules, being intimately associated with government they are quite well informed about what is required and how to get around or satisfy those rules.
But the obstacles are coming as a shock to the average citizens that love this country. For their whole lives peace-loving, work-a-day Americans have taken for granted that there exists the freedom to assemble completely unaware that those rights have been eliminated by stealth regulation by governments all across the land.
And now the folks in Cape Coral, Florida have learned their lesson.
Americans do not have the rights they always thought they did. There is no right to protest government. There is no right to assemble. The people have no rights at all to voice their displeasure. Shut up people. Go home. Nothing to see here. Go quietly back to your IPods and DVDs. Big daddy government will take care of you. The Obemmessiah will decide what’s best for you. Don’t worry your little heads. Oh, and thank you for your payments on April 15th.

CALL IT A “PATRIOTS NIGHT OUT DOWNTOWN” or whatever, a non-officially organized event that is promoted so as to PROMOTE YOUR LOCAL BUSINESSES and make the Tea Party point on the side!
If a couple thousand people all show up in the same general place… then fan out and get in nice polite lines outside on the sidewalks to “get-in” to the local restaurants (that won’t be able to seat them all at once) are the Cops going to demand that they cannot wait in line to eat!?!?!? Overwhelm the local Eateries and be prepared to PATRONIZE THEM and to be patient waiting outside to do so! If you don’t want to Buy A T-Shirt (I’m sure tons of places are selling T-Shirts and such), just print something out on a 8.5×11 paper (sign tips) and double-side tape it to you front and back (or Buy Buttons to wear), carry a small 4th of July sized waving Flag (4x6inches Gadsden, 4x6inches Culpepper, and more) which you should be able to find in many stores (Dollar stores usually have a few around), simple things that will work to make your point and NOT require a Permit.
Let the folks at the Alliance Defense Fund (emerging counter to ACLU that won’t defend “Right/Conservative” values/causes), and others have mentioned FreedomWorks, know you’d like them to align with the Tea Party folks to provide potential Legal weight behind it.

On the most basic level, if pornography is considered free speech and we can’t stop it, how can the government then stop the peaceful assembly of protesters? Not to mention the fact that the right to peaceful assembly is also protected under the Constitution.
If ever there was a cause of continuing a protest in spite of a denial of permits, this is such a cause. If we don’t, then there’s no point in fighting anything else the government decides to do and just accept that this is our country now and forevermore.

People with real jobs and families have to be willing to get arrested, go to jail at least long enough to get arraigned and to make bail, and then fight out the legal cause with the arrest on their record, a process that can take years. In a Blue place, they will keep you in the dock until they run out of courts to appeal to or you run out of money and friends. If you have a government’s resources, which of those things do you think is going to happen first?
We probably should make a deal quickly with a Red city in a Red state to arrest the participants in a Tea Party that doesn’t get a permit. Then we can get it up through the courts quickly and get a USSC decision that will protect us; we’re going to need it.

Something we Rs and Cs could learn something about, but we’re usually too busy purging the ideologically impure from our ranks.

1. Rallies are so exciting because of the fact that “you are blatantly opposing the Power-That-Be”. And you should be “eager” to confront anyone who will try to go against your protest.
2. GETTING THE ATTENTION OF EVERYONE (particularly the MSM) AND FRIGHTEN THEM (before and after the protest rally) that certain groups of non-conformists are ready to speak out and fight against the conventional beliefs/ideas is the main ingredient for a protest rally.
AND GLENN BECK IS RIGHT! We can make use better, more catching and more biting slogans. We don’t want to look like WIMPS before the eyes of professional liberal protesters and rallyists.
WHY NOT BE AFRAID? “Protesting the Government” is CLEARLY WRITTEN in the US Constitution as one of our main FUNDAMENTAL RIGHTS.
The Dems and Libs have overused that Rights so much in the past. It’s about time for the Reps and Cons to exercise that Right and fight anyone who will curtail it.
Of course, we can always make our protest ralllies DECENT, CLEAN, SWEET-SMELLING AND WELL-POISED…. unlike those dirity street acts of the Dems/Libs. After all, we are the Real Americans (he he he!).
JUST WATCH OUT FOR “INFILTRATORS” planted by the enemy whose purpose is to start untoward incident and put the blame against us…. handsome and civilized protesters in the 21st Century.

To shield sites (read: the individuals behind the sites) from potential legal actions (or arrest on whatever trumped up charges) was my point of making it a different call…. Just an only quasi-semi-official “Day/Time” but not really an “Official” organized event…. Just a call that folks might want to consider getting out and supporting their local businesses and make the Tea Party point while they just happen to be hanging out.
Yes, A GAME…. A gimmick… A work-around….. Just for those who are squeamish… I’m with you, don’t back down, permit or not go forth with your plans, but for those who still want to do something but are intimidated – this gives them something.

And I agree that many of those who attended and will attend the Tea Parties are actually “first timers”. God forbid, but if some of our brothers and sisters are jailed because of such protest rallies, it will be their first time to spend hours inside a police station. And it could be a shocking or embarrassing experience to some of our friends.
On the contrary, going to jail is what the professional liberal protesters have always been dreaming of. It makes them more aggressive and more convincing to their followers the next time around. In fact, they use such arrest as their “main talking point” against an oppressive Government (local, state or national) who put them to jail.
Ye can call protests as GIMMICK. But the gimmicks of the Moveon, ACORN, CODEPINK, ACLU, Farrakhan, Sharpton, DSA, SEIU, AFL/CIO, WFP, …. and even by Al Gore have been instrumental in putting the Democratic Party into its current status as the MAJORITY. Democrats’ ideas, no matter how evil they are, have become the mainstream .
Maybe time has really changed. It really looks like that we are the MINORITY now. The liberal MSM people have dissed us and now regard our opinions as “unconventional”, if not “stupid”. Our enemy (the liberal MSM, the Democrats and their socialist/nepotistic Leader Obama) is continuing its campaign. With the money explicitly coming from the Obama Government such as through ACORN and other liberal programs/projects, our enemy is becoming more powerful each day with the goal of further expanding their base. While we think that the popularity of Obama and the Dems will go down over time, we can expect that their machinery will get more stronger.
Sooner or later, all Republicans, Conservatives and all Real Americans must take some courage to openly fight the tyranny of liberalism and socialism in America. It’s better to start fighting a REAL FIGHT now than later when we can no longer fight back.
Let us consider these activities as a prelude to THE GREATEST CONSERVATIVE MARCH TO WASHINGTON DC.

That is all.

I therefore CONCEDE. I realize that I am not disagreeing on the whole premise of your original suggestion re: strategy for the Silent Majority who are still shy (or somewhat afraid) to attend rally/protest especially when the local authorities are not willing to issue permits. In the end, the important thing is enabling the people in all walks of life to patriotically join protest rallies against the Fascist Administration of Obama and his Cronies.

It’s ironic, I have been carrying on a conversation with Saul Anuzis over his efforts to engage the grassroots of the party (click here), and we have the Tea Party movement struggling to survive. Where is the party? Not where they should be that’s for sure.
Saul seems to think hobnobbing with a few RNC members, "politicos", consultants and a blast here and there on their grassroots email list, asking for donations, is enough "engagement" by the party elite with their grassroots. Besides, the corporate leaders of our party aren’t really interested in funding tea parties. It’s not part of their political agenda.
No, if we want our government back, we are going to have to do it without Saul Ansuiz and company.

HOW do people find out about the meeting? Likely on the Internet. But, that Internet page has to be sponsored by someone, right? THAT someone is who the government goes after as criminal violators of their “permit” process and lack of “insurance.”
If there is no advertisement of the event and no “someone” has created the web page to advertise for it… how does it happen? When do those people “show up anyway?” How would they know it is even going on?
Put up a webpage gives government someone to arrest. Not putting up the webpage and no one shows up because they didn’t know about the event.

Let them spend time and thousands in legal fees attempting to force a foreign company to divulge who purchased the domain–time and money diverted away from us.
These are not laws we have to follow–they are rules the royalty handed down.
And if they do find some person to attack, use their rules against them–hit them with a civil rights violation suit, make them pay for your attorney. And every one involved with attempting to stop these protests ought to have 100 ethics violations facing them by Monday morning. And a hundred more complaints about the garbage and weeds they’ve let overrun their properties. And reports of their car speeding, that they were drunk–all those laws they’ve handed down for us little people that they’ve never followed must be turned against them.
Public office for these fools who’d deign to rule us with no accountability ought to become so uncomfortable that they are never heard from again . . .
They’ve been been doing that to conservatives for years, time we get back into our government . . . .

Many cities had long has some sort of “parade permit” scheme, but the rules became both much more complex and expensive to comply with. The Left got good at complying.
I used to have a sign over my desk that said, “Remember, when the enemy is in range, so are you.” Lots of people on the Right side of the ditch thought that clamping down on anti-war protesters and others was quite a good thing and I don’t recall much concern about petitioning the government and freedom of association.
Now, somebody needs to go to court and assert that the burdens are so great that they effectively annul the Constitutional rights to petition the government and freely assemble. Better do it soon while we still have a somewhat objective USSC.

I think they were pretty popular at the time since demonstrations tended to be noisy, disruptive, leave a lot of garbage, and sometimes turn violent. But what the laws do is make it possible to break up any spontaneous demonstration.
The left learned how to comply and since most of it is in the cities, they got little opposition anyway from city governments. I don’t think many conservatives/Republicans ever envisioned themselves in the streets singing songs and carrying songs. Remember only a very few years ago, many Republican and even some Democrat pundits were waxing prolix about the permanent Republican majority.

CALL IT A “PATRIOTS NIGHT OUT DOWNTOWN” or whatever, a non-officially organized event that is promoted so as to PROMOTE YOUR LOCAL BUSINESSES and make the Tea Party point on the side!
If a couple 100 or 1,000 people all show up in the same general place… then fan out and get in nice polite lines outside on the sidewalks to “get-in” to the local restaurants (that won’t be able to seat them all at once) are the Cops going to demand that they cannot wait in line to eat!?!?!? Overwhelm the local Eateries and be prepared to PATRONIZE THEM and to be patient waiting outside to do so! If you don’t want to Buy A T-Shirt (I’m sure tons of places are selling T-Shirts and such), just print something out on a 8.5×11 paper (sign tips) and double-side tape it to you front and back (or Buy Buttons to wear), carry a small 4th of July sized waving Flag (4″x6″ Gadsden, 4×6″ Culpepper, and more) which you should be able to find in many stores (Dollar stores usually have a few around), simple things that will work to make your point and NOT require a Permit.

This is NOT the America envisioned by our founders. In fact, they would look at our elected leaders today in precisely the same way they looked at the British oppressors of their day.
I make a prediction. The year 2010 will be THE pivotal moment in our entire history. For it will be the year in which the American people decide the future of the nation. We will either decide that enough is enough, or we will decide to continue down the road to ruin that this current administration (helped in part by the previous one) has laid out for us.
Here’s what needs to happen, in my view. We need to subject every one of our leaders (from the President of the United States on down to dog-catcher) to a certain litmus test. If they fail to score a passing grade (which is 100%), then they should be persuaded to find other employment, by being voted out of office (if an incumbent) or by withholding our vote and support, if a newby.
That litmus test is the US Constitution and our Bill of Rights. If they will swear or affirm to govern strictly according to the tenets espoused by those documents, then they are deemed to be, vote-worthy. If not, then we’ll help them go back to goat-farming or whatever the heck they were doing before.
In the meantime, I’m persuaded to just show up anyway. If nothing else, the unconstitutionality of their action will be on full display for all to see.
They took that oath when they were sworn in.

Turnabout can be our opportunity
chancer Monday, March 30th at 10:29AM EST (link)Look back to the times that the laws were originally passed and you will find that they were usually implemented to restrict leftist agitators. (At least – this is the case in my state and two others in which I’ve lived.)
Not to be discouraged, leftist agitators either learned to play by the new rules and buy permits etc. or they marched in violation of the rules for protests that had such broad support that nobody was going to begrudge them the violation.
It’s the conservatives turn to play by the rules, or march only with very broad support, OR find ways to repeal the restrictions. I hope conservatives choose to fight to repeal the rules My cynical side says they will take the path of least resistance and follow the rules or ensure broad spectrum support before any action.
Pity.
