The Difference Between President Bush and Barry? Ask the Marines…

You’re traveling from a dimension of raucous applause to one curiously subdued, even tepid. It is a dimension not only of oorahs but one of mild clapping. A journey into a proud land of service and country, if you dare. The next stop up ahead, the Semper Fi zone.

Some presidents are welcome in the Semper Fi zone… others…. not so much.

How far we've fallen!

While I criticized President Bush on the domestic side on occasion, I NEVER did as Commander in Chief. There is no doubting his sincerity and his love and respect for the troops. When the dust settles, history will remember him as a president who won a war, freed a country, and protected his homeland. He was a good man.

"History" May Not Be So Kind

Joe Cor (Diary) Wednesday, March 11th at 9:13AM EST (link)

Part of keeping the country safe involed keeping the public well-informed so that his policies would last a day beyond his stay in office. To have made no attempt to defend his own policies when they were savagely attacked by his opponents showed an indifference to what would follow his administration. This alone makes him, in my opinion, at best a mediocre commander in chief. If he had been as concerned about “history’s” judgement as he claimed to be, he would have had more concern about continuity in his policies, rather than in trying to avoid any conflict with the left. Obama is the product of Bush’s capitulation to the left, and part of the legacy he has left to “history” to deal with.

I strongly disagree with this characterization.

Crowe (Diary) Wednesday, March 11th at 10:44AM EST (link)

But have not the time presently to adequately express why. Suffice to say that while yes, Bush failed to promote his agenda as well as he ought, History will judge Bush for what Bush did and did not do, Obama for what Obama did and did not do, and the fact that the American people elected one after the other will be tied more to a derelict (to be kind) media, a fickle populous, and a milquetoast opponent, than to Bush’s failure to enshrine his policies in the minds of the people.

Being CinC means winning wars and securing the nation. Bush did those. It does not mean being a great communicator. Other aspects of the job require that.

Man… I could go on, but I’ve got to cut it short and get back to work.

“We sleep soundly in our beds only because rough men stand ready in the night to visit violence upon those who would do us harm Dear Leader Obama gives us leave to do so.”

If History Will Judge Bush

Joe Cor (Diary) Wednesday, March 11th at 11:21AM EST (link)

for waht Bush did and did not do, then it will judge him on his failure to communicate, and his refusal to defend his own policies. Being CinC also means building and maintaining public support so that wars can be won. It means defending your wiretap policies and detention policies so that people know what you’re doing and why you’re doing it. Otherwise, those policies just might get demagogued by unscrupulous opponents, and you might end up with a demagogue getting elected. All this was very much Bush’s concern as a responsible CinC.

If being CinC means winning wars, we should remember that Iraq isn’t won yet. The chances of winning it have not been enhance by the election of Barak Obama. Bush’s capitulation to the left and its media cohorts helped bring that outcome about.

And yet, today I see where Bush aides are starting a campaign to defend his legacy. So it seems President Bush is concerned at how history percieves him. Where was this concern for his public image where defending it could have actually made a difference in public policy, where he had a chance to prevent the complete rout of the Republican party by the far left? Why didn’t he defend himself when doing so could have been of benefit to the nation, instead of only enhancing how he is written up in history books?

False comparison!

GT350 Wednesday, March 11th at 9:12AM EST (link)

Oh sure, focus on the Marines. Of course Bush gets a great reception from them, after all he’s a warmongering, bloodthirsty dictator.

You should see the reception Obama gets when visiting San Francisco Bay Area. The Berkeley hippies stopped their ritual flag-burning long enough to salute the President. So did the union thugs who otherwise were shaking down small businesses. An illegal immigrant broke out in tears and said “I’ve never been more proud of my own country!” (In Spanish, of course). One lady was so excited she dropped her bag of Vegan Tofurkey and passed out cold on the sidewalk. Okay, maybe that was from protein deprivation…

Anyway, you get the point.

The illegal immigrant spoke Farsi.

Crowe (Diary) Wednesday, March 11th at 10:45AM EST (link)

…not Spanish.

I'm in no way defending Barry...

Matt Genk (Diary) Wednesday, March 11th at 9:22AM EST (link)

…however, the Marines were standing at attention while “Hail to the Chief” was played. As anyone who has served would know, Hail to the Chief is one of the most revered athems in the military tradition. Hail to the Chief is one of three musical renditions in which all military members, in and out of uniform, stand at attention and render honors. The others are The National Athem, To the Colors, and Reveille.
The Marines were paying tribute to the song, not necessarily the man. I doubt that Barry would have received a warmer welcome if he chose not to enter with a musical tribute (unless he came in to a song by Metallica or Disturbed).

except when President Obama left. They were clapping but not very enthused at all.

We risk our own credibility if we carelessly overplay this

smagar (Diary) Wednesday, March 11th at 9:34AM EST (link)

Greyhawk, one of the leading milbloggers (over at Mudville Gazette) has strongly debunked the idea that the Marines clearly disrespected President Obama.

Psyop makes a good point—the Marines were at attention when the President came in. It’s common for military personnel to come to attention when a high-ranking officer enters the room. And there is no higher ranking officer in the US military than Barack Obama. At the position of attention, you don’t speak unless directed to speak.

Also, at the end of Barry’s speech, CNN cut the sound from the auditorium, to allow the announcer to speak. Can we be sure that the Marines weren’t cheering him then?

My concern on this point is—if we oversell the “The military hates Barack” theme, and the MSM/liberal blogosphere can respond with a somewhat convincing argument that we’re overplaying this—-our credibility takes a hit.

Only Keith Olbermann would think that, in toto, the US military likes Barack Obama more than George W. Bush.

Let’s not give Team Obama an easy talking point, that they—or the MSM—can use to defuse any mention of the military community’s antipathy toward them.

just say, “watch it, and judge for yourself”? I’ve seen the two vids and the one where the 0bamunist left and the sound wasn’t faded to allow the commenter to blab on didn’t show any enthusiastic adulation of the 0bamunist. He got what the office of the president and the CIC deserved, polite applause.
It’s hard for a service member to get wildly enthusiastic about someone who has castigated you for “air-raiding villages and killing civilians”.

Notice also the settings: An official speech at Camp Lejeune (Obama) versus a drop-in Labor Day visit in Iraq (Bush)…

So while this particular juxtaposition may not be the BEST comparison, I’ll be interested to keep track of whether Obama EVER does a drop-in visit like Bush did so many times, what sorts of things he does while there, and what sort of reaction he’d get then.

My money is on “not often, if ever; photo-op basketball game with the two troops who voted for him and/or troops ordered to play him, perhaps sit for a few photos ‘eating with the troops’ before quickly returning to the officers’ mess, and a formal speech (with TelePrompters) at which ‘Hail to the Chief’ is played (because he likes hearing it played as he graces a room with his presence, AND to avoid exposing himself to a possibly disappointing spontaneous reaction); at best a tepid reception.”

Is played at Dear Leader ZerO visits bcause it is the only way for him to command attention from the troops.
Dubya never allowed it to be played when he visited. He didn’t need it.

Perhaps he likes hearing it played

The flaw in your argument

spinn Sunday, April 12th at 12:32AM EST (link)

One group of Marines does not expand out to “all Marines”. There is currently another video clip on Firedoglake with Obama’s recent trip to Iraq that show a group of military that is clearly enthusiastic, but I wouldn’t use that as proof of anything other than that particular crowd seemed to like him. In fact, even in that video, there’s one Marine behind Obama who doesn’t look pleased at being there. Or maybe he’s just not very expressive, who knows? But you could just as well take that video, and point at that Marine, and try to make the argument that the whole room didn’t care for him.

I would likely disagree with smagar’s politics but I highly commend his point of view on this. Using one small snapshot as proof of a larger argument is risky at best.

bullshit

Doc Holliday (Diary) Sunday, April 12th at 12:38AM EST (link)

you are a troll. Why would anyone in the military support someone who never served, attacks what they are doing, and plans to gut defense spending? I would gladly love to see a military poll on who supports Obama. Soldiers and Marines are required by law to respect their president, he is the commander in cheif. If you think the military is so dumb to not know this “community organizer” from Chicago cares nothing for them, then you need to stop drinking the Kool Aide. You are not tricking anyone here.

you to stick around here, I tend to agree with you 100% of the time. The administrators are going to crack the whip on you. I understand that this fired you up, it did me as well.

Admin… Let Doc Holiday (fitting) off with a warning on this one, he got fired up… I would like to see him stick around a while longer.

Don't Tread on me, while I appreciate your concern

Doc Holliday (Diary) Sunday, April 12th at 1:04AM EST (link)

I have been here over 3 years and you have been here 5 months. I know we have a standard policy about foul language, I knew that as I typed what I did. But there is something else about Red State you might not know. People gain credibility here over a long time. There are exceptions to every rule. If a moderator wants to upbraid me for lashing out against an obvious troll, then let them do it. You are only drawing attention to my vulgarity, if you think you are helping me out, your are not, please stop.

I am sure your intentions are noble, but like I said, I can handle the heat, I knew what I was doing, and I am not apologetic. We had a recent diary about tea bagging, yet you are worried I said a word about bovine excrement? Again, thanks for the concern, but when I want your help I will ask for it.

Doc,

I knew you would take that the wrong way, see below… I noticed you had been around here for quite some time after I typed that. No offense, man I was just as angry as you were, I just do not have the leeway to do such an act. I was trying to help.

Again, I guess we are all an army of one around here. Your lashing of me is surprising, heh, I guess no good deed goes unpunished. Also give me some time next time to do some additional research before you make me a pion.

no, I made you nothing I just agreed with you most

So I happened to notice...

DONTREADONME (Diary) Sunday, April 12th at 1:09AM EST (link)

that Doc holiday has been around here for about three years plus. He is a veteran here at RS. So I suppose he will get a slap on the wrist. Do you know I actually thought the same thing when I saw the guy aboves spinns argument. He did make a small point, but Doc did turn around with that whole military support poll that was taken by I think it was the stars and stripes. Anyway, anecdotal evidence and that poll would seem to spell out the contrary to spinns argument.

In support of the fact, Marines have supported Obama for president, I know I work in Quantico and I have seen the Obama stickers on active duty Marines cars; however, 5 times as many McCain-Palin bumper stickers were seen on base. Plus, many of the officers will not have support stickers on there cars, but talk to the Lts, Captains and Majors that I worked with they were not happy with the Obama election. Much of it had to do with what is about to happen with the defense budget and it would seem they knew what they were talking about.

It is unbecoming for some to post bumperstickers...

roscopico (Diary) Sunday, April 12th at 1:41AM EST (link)

…but it does not diminish your understanding.

My wife would kill me if I placed a public expression on our auto… where adults do not wish to be hassled by children at a stoplight, the adolescent in me burns for a confrontation.

Apparently our adolescent-in-chief does not burn for confrontation: he sees terrorist hostage-taking as a petty crime, perhaps a low-grade misdemeanor. Let us send the FBI. They might even receive “federal charges”… Ooooohhhhh!

Then Holder will let them off on their recognizance as fine muslims, misunderstood in evil rich America, the “U. S. of KKK A”, unwilling to accept “transnational law”.

This will be the second time Michelle “nice arms” obama will be proud of the US of KKK A.

Again, terrorism to the Statist is like determining what the meaning of the word “is” is. Libbies prefer to attend to war with the “social worker” than the Seals.

We are now known as a nation of pu$$!35.

Thank you, goodnight.

noticed you have been here at RS for about 3 days and saying you disagree with Smagar’s politics, if you do than I suspect this site is not for you. Since it is Easter, I will agree with you on the point that painting with a “broad brush” or a conclusion based on one or two videos is anecdotal and conjecture at best; however, do not kid yourself by pretending this is just an isolated incident.

Marines respect the POTUS the position; however, the Marines want to kick ass, that is what they do. Besides, If they were to boo a POTUS, they would be thrown in the stockade or be discharged for insubordination

More anecdotal evidence, the Corp is not exactly pro-Obama, they were personally Pro-McCain (large %); however, they are Pro-USA and the USMC. That is do not expect to see an overt display from the Corps of disgust towards the POTUS no matter who it is.
