Dems ‘Must’ Keep Census Political — ‘Gerrymander and Gender-mander Away!’

Bonnie Erbe, a columnist and blogger for U.S.News and World Report, is keen to make sure that Democrats continue to cheat on re-districting as much as possible. She is insisting that Democrats not fall for a bi-partisan or a fair approach to re-districting and says that the Census should stay “politicized” because, after all, it’s Democrats in power now! So, as far as she is concerned, the Democrats should “gerrymander away” and absolutely demands that the Census should be politicized.

Erbe writes that she wants to “gender-mander” the Census for “feminist leaders” and wants to make sure that “hispanics and Latinos” aren’t “under-counted.” She claims the Census is “part of the spoils of victory” and wants her lefties to be able to wield that power. She says that the Democrats should “spare us the theatrics of trying to look nonpartisan.” So, the Dems should continue to cynically use the Census merely for partisan political purposes.

So much for the new tone in Washington, eh?

Erbe calls it “un-American not to gerrymander, as if the simple fact that it has gone on so long makes it OK. Apparently she is unaware that gerrymandering was not a concept that was born with the Constitution and country, but was only invented later. “Gerrymandering” is a term made up by the cynical patchworking of a voting district intended to benefit a particular party. It was originally created in Massachusetts in 1812 when Elbridge Gerry re-engineered a Boston district strictly for his party’s benefit.

As a conservative, I am all for tradition. But not everything that has gone on for over a hundred years is good. After all, should mere age protect anything from change then we’d still have chattel slavery in this country today. Somehow, I doubt Erbe would think slavery is a time honored tradition!

Unfortunately, Erbe seems not to care what the national Census was supposed to be used for. Originally is was to be a strict counting for purposes of representation in Congress not a power grab used to warp districts for partisan political gain.

The Census is required by the U.S. Constitution in the following clauses:

Representatives shall be apportioned among the several States according to their respective numbers, counting the whole number of persons in each State, excluding Indians not taxed. (14th Amendment alteration of original clause)… The actual Enumeration shall be made within three Years after the first Meeting of the Congress of the United States, and within every subsequent Term of ten Years, in such manner as they shall by Law direct. (As originally stated in Article 1, Section 2)

But, Erbe wants to stick with a cynical and unfair warping of the system and it can only be because that warping will benefit her favorite party this time.

In her piece Erbe talks about what is un-American. I’d say that not to want to right a wrong is un-American. Wouldn’t you?

But wait. If Erbe was at least always against bipartisanship and solidly for power politics, we could at least give her kudos for her consistency. Unfortunately, she has in the past longed for it as a palliative for what ails us.

Not long ago, Erbe was bemoaning the loss of wonderful bipartisanship and pinned for its return. But, then, those were the days when a president Bush sat in the White House. Typical of hypocritical lefties, Erbe wants bipartisanship when her favorites are out of power, but wants it done away with when her party is in power. Of course, that’s not really bipartisanship, is it?

And with Erbe as a perfect example of the dissembling and double dealing from the left, she wonders why Republicans are not too keen on any bipartisanship themselves?

On the Census...

Tom A. (Diary) Wednesday, March 11th at 5:36AM EST (link)

I don’t have a problem with gerrymandering in the sense that as long as politicians write the district lines, it is going to be what it is going to be. The courts are supposed to correct anything that gets too ridiculous.

The part that scares me is the Erbe-like attitude where people aren’t supposed to be “undercounted”. Translation: We’ll make the numbers add up to whatever suits us best – reality be damned.

I really believe Obama is going to take an unprecedented step and start messing with the whole population count for whole states, so as to minimize any GOP gains in electoral votes for red-McCain states and maximize electoral vote distribution for blue states.

Elections have consequences.

After the ’10 Census, there’ll be a total of six people living in all the Red states combined.

The only thing I think we’ve got left is to use our voices on talk radio to sound the red flags about this, and maybe have Judicial Watch (and associated groups) monitoring this like a HAWK and be ready to immediately go to court to challenge anything that seems ridiculous.

Remember, Bush netted +7 electoral votes from the 2000 Census, which I’m sure Bill Clinton toyed with.

If we don’t net gain at least another +7, we’ll know just how warped this really got.

…operates under the false assumption they were undercounted in the first place.

As repugnant as any cheerleading for some sort of “three fifths” rule may seem on its face, might I humbly beg as a taxpayer for my day in court?
As the inimitable Mark Steyn said recently asserted, we should have no representation without taxation.
Those with a real stake in the course of the ship (the taxpayer) have paid for the trip. While the multitudes vote to pick the pocket of the silent financier (no longer a majority) we wonder why socialism wins at the polls.

Three fifths.

THAT is something new! I always thought the census was simply a COUNT OF PEOPLE. I had no idea that those in power were “supposed” to skew the numbers in their favor. Either a person is there, or they are not. I’m quite worried about the 2010 census – given what we saw with the fair and honest (NOT) tactics used by ACORN to register voters during the last election cycle. Are they going to pay people to be counted 71 times? Are they going to “count” people that are dead? I’m sure there will be this and much more. What a joke our government is becoming…

No!!!11!1!!1!1! The Bilderbergers are coming

The Left completely lacks intellectual honesty. She, also, does not understand the ramifications of gerrymandering and politicizing the census. The political fallout will be disastrous of the Dems. Doesn’t anyone remember when the Texas legislature walked out and went to Okalhoma.

Egregious redistricting is a bipartisan affair.

At the moment, the pains of such redistricting probably still sting on the left. Now would be a time to introduce a process for drawing districts which is immune or highly resistant to partisan influence, and codify it – preferably in a Constitutional Amendment, since that would be more difficult to subvert later.

If one expects the left to draw districts with bipartisanship in mind, when it wasn’t done when they were out of power… well, that just seems naive. But a permanent solution, rather than just saying, “Hey, we abused the system; how about you play it straight?”… a permanent solution could work.

The first goal should be to avoid looking at it in terms of political power, and begin looking at the situation in terms of making sure everyone has legitimate representation.

The census is a different dimension than redistricting

civil truth (Diary) Wednesday, March 11th at 12:42PM EST (link)

As the famous expression goes, we’re entitled to our opinions but not to our facts.

Redistricting is opinion about how to divide populations into voting districts. Until everyone agrees to change those rules, then it’s going to be a matter of partisan dispute. There’s not dispute here. that’s not the issue here, though.

This issue is over the census. The census are the facts; the numbers which form the playing field for redistricting. The census bureau has always striven to be scientifically accurate and non-partisan, because the very legitimacy of representative government is rooted is an accurate enumeration of citizens so t hat voting power can be fairly distributed.

Our ability to have peaceful elections and transfer of power is rooting in the perception that the game is fair and not rigged. If one side manipulates the count to maximize their political advantage, this is like stuffing the ballot box, and we all lose: in a closely divided electorate, the losers believe they’ve been cheated, and the winners don’t know if they won fairly.

So let’s keep matters straight – we’ll can all play the apportionment game according to the rules, but to cheat on the count evidences a preference for tyranny over free elections.

Reps better learn a lesson

I hope Reps learn a lesson for the next time they gain a majority(hopefully a real conservative majority instead of an “R” one).

Next time, NO pandering to the left, NO guilt driven spineless compromise. Dems are much tougher in this regard. We need to remember that. When you get a majority and are close to putting out the fire, stamp the dang thing out.

Make all changes as permanent as possible. Dang nabbit for sunsetting tax breaks.
