A Reminder of What Jindal’s Made of

We all saw the rocky performance that Bobby Jindal gave in his response to the president’s not-the-state-of-the-union speech earlier this week. There was a lot of wincing going on during and after his performance. But, let me stress the word “performance,” here. It was NOT the basic theme of the speech that was so bad. It was but how he delivered it.

Still, despite his less than show-stopping performance, a lot of second guessing on Jindal started to waft about conservative circles. The “he’s not ready yet” stuff was everywhere. So, we need to remind ourselves of just what sort of stuff Governor Jindal is made of. That reminder comes in the form of his reaction and efforts during Hurricane Katrina. If you want a show-stopping performance, there you have one.

With his actions during that natural disaster and his words as a result, we can see his most basic ideals laid bare. And they are ideals we should all applaud. So, as a reminder here are some highlights of his op ed in the Wall Street Journal from September 8, 2005. Jindal began his piece with these words:

Over the past few days, America has been both moved and disturbed by television footage of Hurricane Katrina’s aftermath. But for those of us in Louisiana still struggling to cope, the troubling images are of opportunistic politicians playing the blame game while there is so much real work to do.

Rather than point fingers, we should be fixing the situation on the ground. And that will include taking steps to ensure that red tape doesn’t stifle the continued security and rebuilding efforts.

There have already been a number of instances in which an overly inhibitive bureaucracy prevented an appropriate response to the disaster. For example, on Wednesday of last week a company called my office. With only three hours before rising waters would make the mission impossible, they were anxious to send a rescue helicopter for their stranded employees. They wanted to know who would give them a go-ahead.

We could not identify the agency with authority. We heard that FEMA was in charge, that the FAA was in charge, and that the military was in charge. I went in person to talk with a FEMA representative and still could not get a straight answer. Finally we told the company to avoid interfering with Coast Guard missions, but to proceed on its own. Sometimes, asking for forgiveness is better than asking for permission.

True as can be. Big Government does not work. Local efforts are far more effective. And if anything speaks to Jindal’s basic American ideal it is this line…

My office became so frustrated with the bureaucracy that we often turned to private companies. They responded more quickly and flexibly.

Rugged individualism and local control. Now THAT is something we conservatives should applaud.

In any case, go on over to the WSJ and read Jindal’s whole piece. It is instructive to see what the man is made of. And remember, this came before he was the toast of conservatives everywhere, so he didn’t have quite as much to prove then as he might now that ambitions might be a tad more extent.

Lastly, I have to express my own disappointment in those that beat the man up so for his reply to Obama. I thought we were the party of ideas? Why are we so chagrined with a less than stellar delivery when the ideas were pretty solid? Are we going to throw Jindal under the bus so soon just because he doesn’t perform like Charlton Heston? I sure hope not. We are better than that, aren’t we?

And here is a great video of another Louisiana legend, Sheriff Harry Lee, a self-described “yellow dog Democrat,” who is a big supporter of Bobby Jindal!

This is Bobby Jindal. Please do not lose sight of this.

I liked Jindal's response

but at some point, the Republican Party has got to learn about packaging and presentation.

This shouldn’t be rocket science. It doesn’t have to be extravagant or lavish, just professional.

True...

Warner Todd Huston (Diary) Friday, February 27th at 11:55AM EST (link)

True, but is that a reason to throw Jindal under the bus already?

Be sure and Visit my Home blog Publius’ Forum. It’s what’s happening NOW!

It would be a mistake to do so.

RJD (Diary) Friday, February 27th at 1:02PM EST (link)

My point was that it won’t matter who is out front talking up the issues if the packaging and presentation remain stale and well, cheap (even if that’s only a perception, it will mute the message).

This isn’t just about TV spots, it’s about leveraging the Internet and all its technologies, from Twitter, to video to social networks. It’s definitely about not shooting the messenger, which includes Conservative Talk Radio, which is becoming the trendy thing to do.
With more and more newspapers going under or moving entirely online, this needs to be the time Republicans attempt to make some headway into media circles (I’d enjoy trying this – if I had the money and business sense, etc).

Jindal is still the man...

realityunwound (Diary) Friday, February 27th at 10:52PM EST (link)

What he said was wonderful. I’ve seen him give & take with people and he’s sharp, quick witted and extremely on point. It’s a hard thing to stand in front of a camera and talk and be convincing with 3 people in the room, especially after an admittedly great orator presented at a joint session of congress with 60% of the room dancing in bachanalian revelry at everything he said.

Jindal will be fine. It’s a long race, and his message was extremely strong. The last minute and a half told me what I needed to hear.

Content was spot on

texas214 (Diary) Friday, February 27th at 12:27PM EST (link)

Just next to impossible to have any sort of flow to the speech give he was basically talking into a camera with no one around. No applause lines, no response to an audience, just hard to pull off in a vacuum.

I can't agree with this

uttles (Diary) Friday, February 27th at 12:33PM EST (link)

Jindal was horrible, and what’s worse: he was an affirmative action Republican. Instead of putting up the best guy for the job (Sanford immediately comes to mind) we put up a RINO who happens to be a minority. Bad choice, and we’re paying for it now as his speech is the laughing stock of the news.

Couldn't disagree more.

RJD (Diary) Friday, February 27th at 1:08PM EST (link)

Under your logic, the Republican Party is screwed, because it will never be able to elevate a minority to a visible level.

As for the media’s reaction, not sure what you were expecting or think would have happened if Sanford had given the response, but I am rather satisfied with how the attacks unfolded – most, like MSNBC, attacked Jindal the man. Nothing wrong with exposing the Left’s innate racism and hypocrisy.

Finally, and please provide links should you return, how is Jindal a RINO?

Ugh

Sanford on Obama’s rhetoric: “Dangerous”

Jindal on Obama’s rhetoric: “Inspiring”

that’s all I need to know

Sanford has waffled on accepting stimulus funds more than Jindal has. Jindal is applying conservative principles in Louisiana, no conservative cake walk.

I just didn’t know we were using the the response of the press as the measure of how successful we are. I’m supposed to check Olberman & Maddow to see if we were effective? No way.

Jindal’s content… excellent.

Jindal’s delivery… lots of work to do.

Fortunately he’s got time to work on delivery. Let him be a dark horse right now and fine tune the credentials.

Let Jindal loose for unlimited media interviews for a week

bk (Diary) Friday, February 27th at 1:37PM EST (link)

Did you see how he destroyed Meredith Veiera? No need for handlers to prep him – he could wing it and kill any media person they put up against him. The guy knows so much and doesn’t get flustered and tells it like it is. Refreshing!

Thank you for doing this diary

and for reminding all that we are supposed to be the party of ideas. I partucluarly like your last paragrah where you express your dissapointment in those so quickly willing to throw Jindal under the bus. I have been harping on the Jindal thing for days as it reminds me of the vilification of Palin and even going back to Fred Thompson. I expect every kind of dribble and slobber from the Liberals, but it is most disturbing when it comes out of so-called Republicans. From reading the comments above, I see where some put packaging and appearance above all else. So, someone can stand in front of an audience or camera and spout lies and falseties, as Obama does regularly, and that makes them a total package, and someone to be impressed with. That is why the Republican party will never have any chance of any gains, there simply aren’t any who meet the standards of their misconceived appearance perfections. It is the result of watching a little too much Britney Spears and American Idol. And, we say that the Obama supporters have been dumbed down!!!!!!

Exactly right WTH.

itrytobenice (Diary) Friday, February 27th at 2:34PM EST (link)

Jindal is talented and smart. If we get distracted by a setting for a speech he gave, we deserve another dose of John McCain.

Someday, the Stupid Party is going to have to wake up and appreciate our quality people or the Evil Party is going to destroy our nation.

I was harsh on Jindal

tankertodd (Diary) Friday, February 27th at 3:12PM EST (link)

Jindal’s lackluster performance in the response yet great performance in interviews the next day led me to make a light observation on the topic in my diary:

constructive criticism

RJD (Diary) Friday, February 27th at 3:30PM EST (link)

Lets not lose sight of such a concept. It is ok to criticize. It helps even more to offer solutions. This is something the media never did with Bush – they only insulted and criticized. And with Obama, they don’t dare critique him, which means no solutions other than what he’s attempting to sell.
Which really baffles me, to a point. Love the guy all you want, but if you want him to succeed, offer some constructive criticisms that can make him a better president. Instead, they sweep everything under the rug, and the same tune gets played every day. Mind boggling.

When/If Jindal hits the campaign scene

Scope (Diary) Friday, February 27th at 4:28PM EST (link)

he will hopefully have a team to criticize what may be perceived as “flat” speeches, and it will be done behind the scene, by professionals. For “we the people” to openly criticize him, as well as supposed Republican journalists and strategists, is just as good as feeding Jindal to the Liberal Sharks, and they would only be repeating what they heard many of us say. I don’t advocate saying, wow, he blew it out of the park, but, good God guys, lighten up and give him a chance. Do we forget the “bad” interview Palin had with Couric? We contributed to the negativity, and many Republicans even brushed her off as hopeless and dumb. Those same sentiments still hold with her today. Has she made some great and inspiring speeches since Couric? Did Fred Thompson get the same reputation after his first few speeches? Now, when FDT speaks, people listen. Too bad the Republicans didn’t learn then, and are willing to do the same all over again. Is that not how we got McCain? Now there is a speaker I could easily throw under the bus, and then back up over him again.

5 x 5 x 5. Very good point

David123 (Diary) Friday, February 27th at 4:56PM EST (link)

I READ Jindal’s speech, and in print it looked very good.

I do have one caution/warning. I read that of polls taken after the first Kennedy-Nixon debate, people who watched the debate on TV thought Kennedy won, but people who heard the debate on the radio thought Nixon won. In today’s environment it is important for a national candidate to come across on TV well.

And now we are talking

40″ tp 65″ LCD HDTV’s that many are watching on.

Jindal should have done his response in a green screen studio
with flashy graphics. Maybe even in 3D!!!

Really this sitting down reading a prompter is so 90′s……

The point cannot be made often enough: Modern liberalism, as embodied in the Obama presidency, is the defender of the status quo. And the status quo is a road to economic ruin. Political forces cannot redistribute the wealth that the economic system does not produce.

Wrong Setting, Right Message

SoFiMil (Diary) Friday, February 27th at 7:01PM EST (link)

To bad the decision was made to not have Jindal behind a podium or sitting down at a table. That would have made all the difference. It is extremely difficult to stand still without a podium and give a speech if the format calls for you to only look straight ahead. The real fault of course lays with us, the listener, who needed a bit of a distraction (i.e., podium).

Jindal would have rocked the house if that hurricane didn’t come which necessitated him canceling his prime-time address at the Republican National Convention. He was where he was supposed to be, however. I look forward to seeing more of Bobby Jindal in the future. We need him.
