During his not-the-state-of-the-union speech last night, president Barack “givitaway” Obama said the following:
“I believe the nation that invented the automobile cannot walk away from it.”
Sorry, Prez, but while we did make the automobile an integral part of American life, while we did popularize the personal vehicle for the whole world, and while we certainly revolutionized its manufacture… we just didn’t invent the automobile.
Oh, we’ve done a lot of inventing in this wonderful country. It’s just that the auto wasn’t one of ours. Sure we have been unalterably linked to cars. But we just plain were not the first to make one.
As a short piece on Foxnews.com reminds us:
The credit for internal combustion engines generally is given to German engineer, Karl Benz, who designed and built the world’s first practical automobile in 1885. A steam-powered car was invented in 1769 by French inventor Nicolas Cugnot. Americans, on the other hand, are given credit for the mass production of cars.
So, Obama was just plain wrong.
Now, let us imagine what would be happening today if George Bush had said that Americans “invented the automobile,” shall we?
Had Bush said this he would have been smeared as historically illiterate.
He would have been attacked for the hubris of claiming America invented something it didn’t.
He would have been accused of shorting the credit due our allies endangering foreign relations.
Aaaaand, to top it all off he’d have been called an idiot once more.
So, now I’m going to sit patiently here and wait for the DailyKos types, the Huffyposters, and the wild-eyed denizens of the Democratic Underground to rip The One a new opening of dubious usage.
Waiting….
Still waiting….

There are some other things the libs did to Bush
fmaidment (Diary) Wednesday, February 25th at 6:07AM EST (link)that we can’t do to Obama.
How often was Bush compared to a chimp?
How often was Bush accused of lying?
How often was Bush blamed for the recession he inherited?
How often was Bush blamed for deep spending deficits?
That’s just four examples of things for which the Obamessiah won’t be blamed and for which Bush took a shellacking in the MSM and blogosphere.

I would like to see “Bubba’s” militia take on Keith Olbermann and others at NBC and MSNBC.
I think the gaffe is obscuring the broader mistakes.
evanm (Diary) Wednesday, February 25th at 8:44AM EST (link)Democrats, including Obama, have been trying to destroy the automobile for decades.
Obama will only refrain from walking away from the automobile if it burns raw corn, produces no CO2, cannot get a person from point A to point B and was produced by wards of the state for twice the price it gets at market.
The only thing I want to walk away from is unprofitable companies making overpriced products because they’re hobbled by asphyxiating unionization. I’ll keep buying cars, from America or elsewhere, until somebody invents a flying car. Then, frankly, screw the automobile.
Substantively, consider how economically backwards it is to subsidize an industry simply because it was invented here. Take, for example, the typewriter. The typewriter is an American invention, but it’s been suffering lately because foreign competitors are making cheaper, better models, like this one (Okay, maybe not cheaper). Shouldn’t we be subsidizing typewriter manufacturers, and keeping them afloat to preserve this great American product?
The Democrats don't really want to destroy the automobile.
papalee Wednesday, February 25th at 9:56AM EST (link)They simply want to get ordinary Americans out of them so we won’t be in the way of their chauffeur driven vehicles so that they don’t have to slow down for us.
Good point
evanm (Diary) Wednesday, February 25th at 10:36AM EST (link)That explains why they love mass transit so much. Mass transit for the chaff, and Escalades and Boeings for the Politburo.
Are we sure this was just a simple mistake?
WarEagle01 (Diary) Wednesday, February 25th at 9:47AM EST (link)Maybe he was actually referring to the Germans. Barry loves foreigners. And, since he’s giving everyone else a handout, why not the Boche?

How fitting….
Santayana was right
WarEagle01 (Diary) Wednesday, February 25th at 10:07AM EST (link)I think this seemingly minor gaff explains quite a bit about this administration. Think about all the big brains that must have proof-read this speech, including the Dear Leader himself, prior to it being delivered last night. None of them, apparently, had enough historical knowledge to catch this eighth grade-level mistake.

The party controls the past
fisk2521 Wednesday, February 25th at 10:10AM EST (link)Liberals like Obama have spent the last 30 years re-writing history and our educational systems spread the new “history’ to their students – - Yale and Harvard included. It, then is no wonder that they get history wrong – - they don’t know any better.
It does boggle the mind however, that whoever was writing this address to the nation for Obama didn’t even know enough to ‘fact check’ the history of the auto. Makes you wonder what else they don’t bother about and why an administration that prides itself on ‘new technology use’ and transparency doesn’t understand that 2 minutes on the Internet would have been well spent.
It’s “1984″ and Orwell puts all this Obama rhetoric in context:
“Essentially, the Party creates a fake past according to what it wants to be true; the real past is completely forgotten and unrecorded.
‘Who controls the past’, ran the Party slogan, ‘controls the future: who controls the present controls the past.’”

It's worse than that.
Achance (Diary) Wednesday, February 25th at 10:15AM EST (link)To a post-modernist, there is no objective history, there is only your perception of the arrangement of data in time which constitutes “your” history. Consequently, if BHO perceives the auto to have been invented in the US, it was invented in the US for BHO.
That’s why modern Lefties are such astounding liars and are so offended when they are called liars. You or I may lie in the sense that we know the truth and choose to say something else. Lefties cannot lie for the truth is what they beleive truth to be. When one denies that there is any objective reality, whatever one perceives to be true is true.

How true
fisk2521 Wednesday, February 25th at 10:38AM EST (link)You are absolutely correct. I see this being manifested in our churches, our schools and our media.
It prevents any real dialogue or real non-partisanship..and is incredibly destructive to our culture. I’m certain that all tyrants approach ‘truth’ in exactly the same way.

Old Neitzche is too dry and difficult so he comes to us through Focault who is/was French, gay, and dead of AIDS. What more would you want for a Lefty hero? Of course, most of them are far too uneducated to even know the philosophy they’re practicing and have certainly never read any of it.
