CNN Claims Obama The New Ronald Reagan, Assigns ‘Morning in America’ to The One

Once again CNN goes over the top in its gobsmacked praise of its Obammessiah. This time appropriating Ronald Reagan’s famous “morning in America” theme and assigning it to President Obama as a result of his not-the-state-of-the-union speech last night. In reality, Obama’s speech was more like a moaning in America as opposed to that bright new morning that Reagan invoked.

Worse, Reagan’s main theme for his “morning in America” ideal was to provoke Americans into a renewal of the American way of self-reliance, one removed from sucking at the teat of government. On the other hand, Barack Obama’s main point was that without government, without The One and all his fixes, we are all doomed.

It was obvious to anyone’s ears that Obama’s theme was as far removed as Reagan’s as can be.

CNN tries hard to shoehorn Reagan’s always sunny optimism into Obama’s big government puffing prescription for what ails the U.S. And CNN seems to think that Obama was very successful in the attempt.

President Barack Obama addressed Congress shortly after 9 p.m. Tuesday, but a casual viewer might have believed it was actually morning in America.

Perhaps CNN is right if that “casual viewer” has no clue what Ronald Reagan was all about!

Writing for CNN, Alan Silverleib goes on:

“Morning in America” was the theme of Ronald Reagan’s 1984 re-election campaign, and it was front and center in Obama’s most critical event since Inauguration Day.

The president who has pledged to reverse much of Reagan’s economic revolution took a page from the 40th president’s playbook in his 52-minute speech, striking a defiantly optimistic tone that belied the nation’s sour mood and rebutted critics who have accused him of intentionally talking down the economy for short-term political gain.

Layering a soup of Reaganisms over the top of Carter policies, however, does not find Obama in emulation of Ronald Reagan, despite what CNN tries to promulgate.

Naturally, CNN is bowled over at Obama’s amazingness and coolosity, calling the speech a “political tour de force.” But, even while pretending that Obama is the new Ronald Reagan, CNN reveals that about every single idea that Barack Obama has makes him rather the direct opposite of Reagan as opposed to his heir.

CNN analyzes the Obama and Reagan agendas thus:

The president’s agenda as defined in his address to Congress may have been the most ambitious in a generation or even two, but it was also easily boiled down to a few bullet points: restore financial stability, strengthen education and promote energy independence and health care reform.

It was, in many ways, the mirror image of 1981, when a newly inaugurated Reagan used the combination of stagnating economic growth and skyrocketing inflation to promote an equally ambitious, simple agenda: cut taxes, shrink government and build up the defense budget.

The differrences are striking showing that Obama is NO Ronald Reagan. Where Reagan encouraged Americans to take responsibility and stride forward into a re-dawning of American exuberance, Obama wants America to curl up in a ball and allow big daddy government to take the reins. Obama certainly tried to steal some of Reagan’s rhetoric, but it is a far more cynical usage of it than was Reagan’s.

Reagan’s rhetoric from his mouth was sincere. It was heart felt. It was emboldening, inspiring, soaring. On the other hand, Obama’s use of that Reaganesque sunny optimism is a dodge, a shuck and jive used to mask the doom saying that without government we have nothing. Obama’s sunny rhetoric is merely a mask, not the sincere belief in the American people that Ronald Reagan held as a guiding principle.

As CNN itself even admits, when Reagan took office he famously said that “Government is not the solution to our problem; government is the problem.”

And here is the key difference. Look at what Obama said:

“I reject the view that says our problems will simply take care of themselves, that says government has no role in laying the foundation for our common prosperity.”

Obama rejects that you, the American people, have the capacity to make your own lives better. He rejects that you are smart enough to lead your own lives without Big Government leading you by the nose.

Despite that CNN tries to abscond with Reagan’s legacy and give it as a gift to President Obama, Barack Obama is no Ronald Reagan.

One other thing about this CNN report stinks. Before the speech on Tuesday, Obama’s staffers were telling everyone that his speech would be “Reaganesque” and that talking point was a central theme in the way they were hyping the event. And what do we get from CNN after the speech? The dutiful Obama spin of how “Reaganesque” the speech was by the compliant folks at CNN. What a coincidence, eh?

Perhaps CNN is right if that “casual viewer” has no clue what Ronald Reagan was all about!

They are banking on the fact that most viewers were educated by the teacher’s union and therefore only know what they want them to know. Once the “casual viewer” leaves school, their education is continued by a multi-media extravaganza of movies, television, pop music and nicely print paper.

So yes CNN the “casual viewer” thinks exactly what you want them to.

Can't we just assume by now. . .

Sundayjack (Diary) Wednesday, February 25th at 8:34AM EST (link)

Can’t we just assume by now that, after massaging him into the presidency, the mainstream media is going to do everything possible to promote him as every bit as good as they initially thought? If not, they’d be implicitly admitting they were duped and asleep at the switch. The question isn’t whether or not he was going to be anointed as a beacon of greatness; the question is when and how soon it would happen. The answer, of course, is one month.

The other thing we need to appreciate is that Barack is good at campaigning, but even more than that, he enjoys it. If the campaign has taught him anything, it’s that charisma works better than substance. The plan and the promises can change. People even expect that. As long as his is charismatic, and as long as he is campaigning effectively, whatever today’s plan is will carry a good flock of blind enthusiasts.

This administration isn’t too hard to figure out. It’s just a continuation of the campaign – changing ideas and policies all clothed in this vague concept of hope and change.

“Of all tyrannies, a tyranny sincerely exercised for the good of its victims may be the most oppressive. It would be better to live under robber barons than under omnipotent moral busybodies.”

to take the advice of his buddy and pal, Bill Clinton, who the other day admonished him for being too negative. I didn’t see a single resemblance to Ronald Reagan, and am offended by those who would make that comparison! So he’s going to cure cancer – yet cancer treatments will be one of the first “non-essential” types of medical care eliminated under socialized medicine! He wants to double the spending on education – providing indoctrination – er – education from birth until you get a job. Washington D.C. spends more per capita on education than any other city – and has the WORST educational system in the country (probably followed by Chicago). There was more double-speak and outright contradictions in that speech than anything I have probably ever heard. I followed the on-line commentary here at RedState – that was probably the only thing that kept me from hurling a hammer through the TV screen! I think WTH very succinctly made the most accurate comparisons, above. Give me liberty or give me death, and I’m telling you, if as much of my liberty is lost as it sounds like is going to be, I’d prefer death!

Why associate Obama to Reagan?

NC_Red_State (Diary) Wednesday, February 25th at 9:04AM EST (link)

It makes no sense. I mean, the era (read error) of Reagan is over. His policies failed and we are now reaping those seeds of poor ideas implemented on the heels of another great leader (Carter).

Why would CNN wish to bring Obama to Reagan’s level? It seems that one would wish to draw stark differences to such a failed President and his policies and talking points.

OR, is this simply another example of trying to have it both ways? I think we know the answer.

…history needs to be rewritten on TV.

The Obama=Reagan will actually benefit the left in quite a few ways:

1. Obama gets to bask in the glow of an accepted presidential success before he as even done anything.

2. It forces conservatives to get in line. If their constituents believe that Obama is similar to Reagan (thanks to MSM indoctrination,) and Reagan was a respected conservative leader, why are the radicals in the house and senate voting against him? They must not be true conservatives!

3. It obscures the policies he actually is enacting. Reagan would never have repealed welfare reform, so it must have been in our imaginations when Obama did.

4. It allows for, “Where did Obama go wrong? Was it in his ‘State of the Union’ address where he decided to be more like Reagan?”

Rewriting history happens in increments. You can’t just say, “We’ve always been at war with Eurasia.” You have to say, “Hmmm… Maybe Eastasia has some good points. Maybe we’re the bad guys? Wait! No! Eurasia has been fighting Eastasia for longer than we have! Death to Eurasia!”

“I’d rather go through the pain of the re-emergence of free markets than endure the long suffering of a socialist state. One is natural and comes from that spark of human desire; the other is imposed and smothers the flame of ingenuity.”-Crowe (from RedState!)

To Obama fans: CNN's attempt to compare Obama to Reagan is really a big Insult!

schools too well… By claiming, apparently approvingly, that Obama is ‘Reaganesque’, they may goad younger people than myself to go find out what Reagan actually was about.

Follow me on this… since the 80s, I’ve heard nothing good about Reagan in the press. He was supposed to be a senile old fool, who somehow could deliver a line, probably because he had once been an actor. Now, I was there when he was POTUS. But younger people, who weren’t, must be confused to hear the same press now comparing their guy to Reagan, as if that were supposed to be a GOOD thing. If 5% of them, in their bafflement at hearing Reagan’s name spoken without apparent derison, go out and see what Reagan actually did and how he did it, we may actually come out of this ahead.
