George of Pennsylvania AFL-CIO Doesn’t Get EFCA… or Does He?

In a recent issue of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, a story on the delicate political spot occupied by Senator Arlen Specter was discussed showing that he has worked himself into a can’t win for loosing situation. He’s made both sides mad with his erratic stance on both sides of the political fence.

But one quote by Bill George the head of the Penn. AFL-CIO was telling about how unions view the Employee Free Choice Act. At least in George’s case, he proves to either have no clue what’s in the EFCA, or he knows all too well and is willing to obfuscate just to get it passed.

Here is George’s quote:

“Arlen Specter will not be our candidate in 2010 if he doesn’t support an opportunity for Americans to have free elections in the workplace,” said Bill George, president of the Pennsylvania AFL-CIO, who added if Mr. Specter wins his union’s endorsement he expects a lot of labor members to cross over in the Republican primary to vote for him.

The curious thing is that George is warning Senator Specter that if he votes against the EFCA that vote will in essence deny workers from having “free elections in the workplace.” Unfortunately for George’s understanding of the EFCA, a yes vote on this odious act will do far more to eliminate the worker’s right to vote than a no vote will.

The EFCA has an important feature called “card check.” This feature takes away from workers the centuries old democratic right of the secret ballot. Workers will have to openly declare their vote for or against a union by signing a public card so that everyone, workers, union bosses and employer, knows what each and every worker voted for.

This leaves every worker open to specifically targeted pressure to vote one way or another. This also leaves the worker open to union intimidation and makes a conscience driven “no” vote much less likely than a fearfully issued “yes” vote.

So, Mr. George claims he wants proper and free elections in the workplace and wants Specter to vote for the EFCA, but the EFCA actually makes free and fair elections in the workplace far less likely, not more likely.

In the end we have to wonder if Mr. George understands this legislation? If he does, then he is obfuscating the truth just to get this undemocratic bill passed. If he doesn’t… well, if he doesn’t he is not doing a very good job representing his fellows, now is he?

I feel vindicated

milesfromkansas (Diary) Sunday, February 22nd at 8:36AM EST (link)

For years I’ve warned of the dangers of second-hand cheeseburgers, but I was called a Cassandra and told to go back to my tofu salad. Cow-flesh broiling produces toxic aerosols that are released into the atmosphere and are inhaled by the children, which over the years accumulates in their brain arteries as lard. It also contributes to global warming. And it does no good to have a non-cheeseburger neighborhood when there’s an animal frying factory right across the highway – the stuff just wafts over and I can barely stomach my bean sprouts and lentils. Lord Obama, we pray to you for your intervention.

I think that calling the AFL-CIO’s George a second hand cheeseburger is quite apropos!

Isn't this the normal Liberal angle?

Call it something Orwellian to hide its true purpose, tell the world why it’s good for us, and then tell everyone why those nasty Conservatives are stopping progress.

The underlying idea of EFCA is that Unions are always "Good".

USNJIMRET (Diary) Sunday, February 22nd at 10:00AM EST (link)

When the empirical evidence of the last several decades is the opposite.
Unions desire to be, at the least, another branch of the Liberal Democratic Party. At most, a completely independent Fourth Branch of Government.
Either way, scary and totally Un American!

Don't kid yourself, card check WILL pass.

It will blow through the Senate like grease through a goose. Once the Senate passes it, it will absolutely sail through the House and you can bet that EVERY Blue Dog will fall in line and vote for it.

Don’t be surprised if the legislation has language that essentially outlaws “right-to-work” and “employee-at-will” laws at the state level, as well as significantly strengthening the union at the NLRB (if that’s possible).

I don't think it has a chance 'Beck. Several dem senators

incl Snowe and/or Collins, the new dem nc senator and Ben Nelson have announced against it. And there are a few others as well. I have also heard several beltway reporters that are pretty reliable on things like this say that the dems know they can’t get it thru the senate and that this is why the blue dogs want it to originate there so they won’t have to vote on it.

But I understand the power of labor money, but a vote for card check would be a death nail for many blue dogs, esp in the South.

I hope you're right GC. We'll see.

The one thing I’m pretty sure of though, is that if the bill originates in and gets through the Senate the BD’s will fold.

Passing card check now makes '10 irrelevant

and ’12 a pro forma exercise. That’s what the Blue Dogs are being told; pass it and you won’t have to worry about R opposition. And they’re probably right.

Achance you've convinced me- all R's should just take their toys and go home

There’s absolutely no reason for anyone here to brainstorm, have better ideas or even try to beat the Gustapo. Guess it’s time to start posting on how to survive under a dictatorship.

Scope, you long ago convinced me that you

Achance (Diary) Sunday, February 22nd at 6:55PM EST (link)

don’t know much about politics or government.

It takes real work, much harder work than sitting in your bathrobe typing. There are campaign disclosure laws. There are corporate and business licence registries. It takes matching it all up to see who’s bankrolling who.

My point is what it has been since the first post on revanchism; the battle is in the states for the foreseeable future, the federal government is lost.

that I don’t know much about Politics or Government otherwise I’d be in a constant depressed state of mind that you are always in. I guess being an idiot still keeps me hopeful that the Republicans can still make some gains.

Achance- You're only proposed idea to go after the Dems is not even doable

Scope (Diary) Sunday, February 22nd at 6:50PM EST (link)

I liked your idea about going after the Non-Profits and Unions as they most likely couldn’t withstand Court lawsuits. You said, if I am not mistaken, that no Union could withstand court scrutintity as to dues payments going to Democratic campaigns. You also said that most if not all Non-Profits are laundering money for the Democrats. I stupidly tried to follow the money with one Dem Senator. In order to get the donor lists from organizations, you must provide your info and “ask” for the donor lists. I found your idea to be undoable to the common citizen. You said that you are not going to give your info away for free, you are going to make money on your ideas. Great, it should be a free market society, and everyone has the right to make a living. I do suspect that by the time you write your book with suggestions, it wll be a little to little a little to late. You won’t have a publishing house that will accept your book. It will be against the government that Obama is creating, and will be seen as the opposition that must be crushed.

Blue Dogs Will Vote Against It; But Not Filibuster

Swamp_Yankee (Diary) Sunday, February 22nd at 6:01PM EST (link)

This is a trap. Blue dog Dem Senators will vote no. It is unpopular with their constituents. But they also know they will be empowered if it passes. I think they will fall in line and vote for cloture and then vote against it. This protects their hides with their base (voting no) and with the Dem leadership (allowing it to come to a vote).

If it gets to the floor. The Dems wont need Nelson or Hagan to get to 50. Assuming that this is true. We need a solid filibuster proof strategy or we need a full ten Dem Senators to flip and we need to start targeting them now. PACs should be running ads in targeted stated like Montana and Colorado and put heat on people like Tester and Baucus in right ot work oriented states.

good point - nt

AR Senators

DerKrieger (Diary) Sunday, February 22nd at 11:11PM EST (link)

Lincoln and Pryor wold be fools to support this legislation. If they do they will find the considerable resources of Wal-Mart and Tyson lined up against their reelections. They’re already on thin ice just by being Dems in a Red state. They both voted for the porkulus bill. I don’t think Lincoln, aka Blank Stare, will win reelection in 2010.
