Obama to Hold ‘Fiscal Responsibility Summit’… So Who’s Gonna Teach HIM?

In January, then president-elect Obama announced that sometime in February he intended to hold what he was calling a “fiscal responsibility summit” as he would be planning his proposal for the 2010 budget. Apparently it will be held on February 23, most likely at the White House.

But first we have the stimulus bill that Obama most likely plans to sign on February 17. That in mind, I ask the question: what does Barack Obama know of “fiscal responsibility”?

Just days before he took the oath of office, Obama told reporters that he wanted to clean up the budget process and make sure government didn’t spend wildly while he helmed the ship of state. “We need to send a signal that we are serious,” said Obama of his “fiscal responsibility summit.” In that same interview he claimed he intended to “stop the bleeding” of money wasted by Congress.

Now that he is fairly in as president, though, Obama has pushed for and is about to sign the biggest spending bill in American history. Worse, he has taken no part in the creation of this bill while Congress has larded this “crisis” legislation with every manner of pork that can be imagined. Never has there been a bill more stuffed with needless spending and Obama didn’t raise his voice once while Congress wallowed in pork barrel proposals.

Yet, Obama thinks he is the one to lead a “fiscal responsibility summit”? It gives rise to the question, who’s going to teach him ahead of this summit what “fiscal responsibility” even means?

This weekend, the administration made like budget hawks.

Along those lines, White House budget director Peter R. Orszag has committed to instituting tougher budget-discipline rules –once the economy turns around. Those include a mandate that any “nonemergency” spending increases be offset by equal spending cuts or tax increases.

This is all well and good and nearly every president makes the claim that they will insist on spending cuts. Of course, what the administration, any administration, does not tell the people is that Congress controls spending, not the White House. The only way a president can affect the budget is by leadership and leadership is exactly what Obama did not exemplify during the creation of this porkulus bill.

And, since Obama took no part in assuring fiscal responsibility with the biggest spending bill in history, why should anyone believe him that later he will hold Congress’ feet to the fire on spending ?

Just take a look at only a few items of pork in this stimulus bill… and remember, this bill is supposed to one for boosting the economy, not for regular government programs:

  • $198 million in pensions for Filipinos who fought alongside the U.S. during WWII. (U.S. citizens would get $15,000 a year, but even non-citizens would still get $9,000 a year)
  • $650 million to NASA
  • $28 billion is being provided to put kids in special education, Head Start and child care and development programs for disadvantaged children
  • $100 million for the Lead-Based Paint Hazard Control Grant Program
  • $200 million to the Leaking Underground Storage Tank Trust Fund Program
  • $300 million for “Violence Against Women Prevention and Prosecution Programs”
  • $900 million for the IRS for the “Limitation on Administrative Expenses”
  • $1 million for the Railroad Retirement Board for administrative costs
  • $2 billion for the Drinking Water State Revolving Act
  • $50 million for Health and Human Services to carry out injury prevention programs
  • $1.1 billion for studies on the effectiveness of different medical treatments
  • $200 million to upgrade labs and facilities for the Department of Agriculture “to improve workplace safety and mission-area efficiencies”
  • $10 million for urban canal inspection
  • $16 billion to pay for student financial aid
  • $1 billion to pay for the U.S. Census
  • $600 million to pay for a fuel-efficient federal auto fleet
  • $650 million for the Digital Converter Box Program to help the constantly delayed transition from analog television
  • $485 million to the Forest Service for “hazardous fuels reduction and hazard mitigation activities in areas at high risk of catastrophic wildfire”
  • Up to $1 billion for “summer activities” for youths as old as 24
  • $40 million for the occupational research agenda
  • $3 billion for the Centers for Disease Control wellness programs and vaccinations
  • $410 million for Indian health facilities
  • $2.4 billion for carbon-capture demonstrations

As I said, this is only a tiny list of the billions being thrown away on things that have absolutely nothing at all to do with stimulating the economy. Remember Obama claimed that stimulating the economy was an emergency and we needed it ASAP. Yet this bill has practically nothing to do with the economy at all. Most of the spending in this porkulus bill goes to big government agencies and projects that won’t do a thing to stimulate anything but government workers and the organizations and lobbyists that supported Obama’s bid for the White House.

This bill is nothing but the biggest payoff to special interests in American history.

So, I ask again: WHAT does Barack Obama know about fiscal responsibility?

“What do you mean?… It didn’t work!”

To a redistributionist, fiscal responsibility simply means that spending must be targeted toward specific, preferred groups.

This is a guy who is on an ego trip so great that he has no problems firing up Air Force One to fly to Williamsburg, VA, for a speech, or to go to Chicago for dinner.

Does this moron realize that every time they turn the turbos of that plane it costs the taxpayers a minimum of $1,000,000. Then again to feed that runaway ego it will cost a lot of money, taxpayers money.

Lack of Principled Leadership

wilsonpickett Sunday, February 15th at 9:06AM EST (link)

The President’s despicable behavior during his rush to get the “porkulus” bill passed was a true indicator of his LACK OF PRINCIPLED LEADERSHIP. If he really believed what he continually reminded us during the campaign, then he would have reined in the House and Senate Democrats — on behalf of the American people — because this was not the time for them to act as drunken-sailor partisans. It brings to mind once again his eight-year track record in the Illinois Senate.

Below is a blog I posted February 5 on TeamSarah.org that reminds readers of what Obama was like while serving in Springfield, Illinois. His actions as President, though terribly disappointing, are not a bit surprising when you look at his record, which continues to be ignored by the mainstream media. As Warner Todd Huston suggests, Obama knows neither “fiscal responsibility” nor “principled leadership”:

IF ONLY THE NEWS MEDIA HAD COME TO ILLINOIS………….

“Barack Obama’s early ineptitude and arrogant attitude — otherwise known as ‘Amateur Hour at 1600 Pennyslvania Avenue’ — were so predictable if only the mainstream media had taken the initiative to dig just a little and to ask questions like a high school journalism student could have done.

“Two of my Republican friends, highly respected by colleagues of both parties, have served in the Illinois Senate for well more than 10 and 20 years, respectively. Obviously, they were there for Obama’s eight years — 1997 to 2004 — in the Senate. I asked them, ‘What was he like for those eight years?’

“Here is how they described Obama: 1) intelligent, 2) knack for giving speeches with flowery, even soaring, rhetoric but little real substance, 3) DIDN’T REALLY DO ANYTHING except make it clear that he had a desire to run for higher office beyond Illinois, 4) arrogant, 5) aloof, 6) was NOT a leader in the Senate, 7) was not even a leader in his OWN party in the Senate, 8) protected at every turn by Chicago Democratic Senate boss Emil Jones, 9) rarely worked across the aisle except when he actually had to during the time the Republicans controlled the Senate, 10) projected the image that he thought he was just a little smarter or a little better than the others, 11) very smooth, so much so that he could skate around and in-between the Chicago corruption to which he had many close ties, but nothing critical ever stuck.

“When asked, ‘What do you fear about him?’, the Senators’ answers consisted of two main concerns: 1) underneath the camouflage of the ultra-liberal voting record that he compiled in Illinois and in the U.S. Senate is the heartbeat of a ‘Socialist,’ especially with respect to our country’s domestic policies, and 2) his disdain for the U.S. military, which will be reflected in how he approaches the ‘war on terror,’ along with his attitude that he can negotiate with rogue leaders and convince the enemy to back off because of his ‘superior’ intelligence and ‘powers of persuasion.’

“The Senators were asked these questions in the summer of 2008, prior to the Presidential campaign heating up. From what we now see in the White House, wouldn’t you agree that Obama’s current behavior was ‘predictable’? If only the news media had come to Illinois………….”

You are correct, thank you for the post above.. Yep we have serious problems with this fella..Just to add to the above. I live in MI and my neighbors are from Chicago born and raised. They have said all of the above plus more in regard to his past non accomplishments. The fix was in.. There is enough information in Chicago that should have prevented his run from eve getting off the ground.

Heck, from the info available, he should never have made it to the US Senate!! nt

he knew he could worm his way in. When the *hit hits the fan they will try to protect Obama to a point but the bigger they are the harder they fall.

The point cannot be made often enough: Modern liberalism, as embodied in the Obama presidency, is the defender of the status quo. And the status quo is a road to economic ruin. Political forces cannot redistribute the wealth that the economic system does not produce.

He wouldn't have made it to U.S. Senate except.....

wilsonpickett Sunday, February 15th at 9:10PM EST (link)

Sorry for the late reply to your comment, but I have been gone all day. Obama would not have made it to the U.S. Senate — he was way behind early on in the campaign to Republican Jim Ryan (a former Illinois elected state official) — except that the Democrats, along with their willing accomplices in the news media (I think it originally was the LA Times), were somehow able to open Ryan’s sealed divorce documents. In the sealed papers were tittilating sex-related accusations from his wife in her reasons for seeking the divorce.

The fallout from the illegally-opened documents eventually forced Ryan to withdraw from the race, resulting in Obama basically running unopposed for the U.S. Senate (although the Republicans brought in Alan Keyes at the last minute to provide lame opposition). Another real kicker is that Ryan’s former wife later said some of the stuff in the sealed documents had been made up by her just to get even with her husband and to make the divorce go through. But by then the damage had been done.

Obama and his henchman also pulled questionable dirty tricks to eliminate his main opponents (in both the primary and general elections) to get elected to the Illinois Senate. The national press is so blind and naive to all these facts. I don’t understand how they so willingly drunk the “Obama Juice.”

Oh, one more: As a U,S. Senator, Obama arranged for a million-dollar earmark for the Chicago hospital his wife worked for (in a job for which she beat out Gov. Blagojevich’s wife….Blago was pissed!). Soon after, Michelle “my Belle” received a $160,000 RAISE!

this stimulus is just that. Obama urged for the stimulus i.e pork bill so that way he could argue it was necessary for the economy, then he will ask for tighter control for the budget bills to tout he controlled spending from congress. Its a parqdigm shift in which rhetoric is used to evoke emotion, by way of of emergency, to sway people to get what you want, then later you let them percieve you are giving them want, a responsible budget, when actually you just shifted the means of allocation.
