The National Republican Congressional Committee has upgraded its website and unveiled it today at nrcc.org. The catch phrase they wish us to take away from the new site is: Regaining America’s Trust Begins in the House.
I hate to say it, but that seems a bit defeatist and gives the impression of the beaten dog. Though, perhaps a little beat down is deserved, eh? Anyway, I just wish it was a bit more of a positive message. Of COURSE we have to admit as a party that we screwed the pooch, but do we have to make that our advertisement theme, too?
It almost seems to scream “We Effed up, but we’ll be better, I SWEAR TO GOD!” It is a bit unsatisfying as a rallying cry, I have to say. After all, “regaining” trust implies we lost it in the first place. Wile true, do we have to prostrate ourselves even in a rallying slogan?
It just reminds me of the skinny kid yelling “don’t hit me!” And we all remember that yelling that invites double the smacks.
The main page has a “Speak to us” feature asking us all to let the NRCC know exactly what issue we are interested that they pursue. They have several choices. We see Card Check; Fairness Doctrine; Massive Tax Hikes; Cutting Defense Spending and $1 Trillion in DC Stimulus Spending. The usual “Donate Now” buttons are also present.
Also, I encourage everyone to sign up for the NRCC’s twitter feed. It is a tad embarrassing that a national party only sports 1,154 twitter followers! Come on everyone, we can do better than that!
There is also a button that takes one to the House YouTube channel that is badly disguised as… well, nothing actually. They need to make the button more obvious as to what it does. It currently says “WATCH NOW” and has a button next to it that says “PLAY.” It also sports a few TV and monitor graphics. OK, it is obvious it is a video button, but to what? It is not clear exactly clear once you clink on the thing as to where you will be taken.
In any case, here it is launched and ready to go. Click on over and tell us what you think?

I checked out the site, and I think it's an ugly site...
Cheetah772 (Diary) Wednesday, February 4th at 10:56AM EST (link)The design is just so lame, but it’s probably me, as I am used to flashy web designs.
And yes, I agree with you, the slogan “Regaining America’s Trust Begins in the House” is lame. I am not a creative person, but I think it should have said, “Fighting the Right Way in the House” is probably better than the former slogan, wouldn’t you say so?
And as for video clips….how come there is no closed-captioning available on them? I’m a deaf person, does everybody expect me to be proficient in reading lips?! I’d like to know what top Republican leaders are saying on video clips. The Democratic Party’s website provides closed-captioning on most video clips, whiy can’t GOP do that as well? This is a minor issue to most people, and I understand that, but it’s a major one to me.

That's a great item for feedback.
Brian Hibbert (Diary) Wednesday, February 4th at 11:08AM EST (link)Unfortunately, there doesn’t seem to be a contact button for the webmaster on the site.
I also agree on it not being a pretty site, but I’m usually less concerned about flash than content.

Attack Mode (Diary) Wednesday, February 4th at 11:15AM EST (link)I don’t know if the NRCC needs to be 508 compliant or not but you may want to ask them if they need to be or if they intend to be regardless of need.
Here is the website which has the law.

By the way, googling section 508 reveals that...
Cheetah772 (Diary) Wednesday, February 4th at 11:47AM EST (link)from my understanding of law that it is only applicable to federal agencies. I doubt NRCC can be considered as a federal agency, as it’s a political party’s website. But I’ll try to contact NRCC on this issue….

Attack Mode (Diary) Wednesday, February 4th at 11:59AM EST (link)we will do this the easy way this time…;^)

and yes this is only law for federal agencies as far as I know…..but at least this would give the NRCC a framework to work from so that they could enhance their ability to reach out to those with disabilities.

UGH, No.
Jewels Wednesday, February 4th at 1:00PM EST (link)Ok, the DESIGN of the site is perfect. And here’s why: when you build a site, 90% of the people who come there are going to look at the first page and if they don’t find what they are looking for at first glance, without scrolling, they will leave. A busy site with lots of bubble and pop is too chaotic. You need to give your viewers’ eyes a place to rest. The content should easily lead them around the page without distraction.
Think of Apple, their packaging and product design has a reputation for sleek beauty, precisely because it doesn’t incorporate a bunch of flashy whiz-bangs into it all.
So anyway, yes, I like the design of the site. Everything you’re looking for is right there on the front page without scrolling. There aren’t a lot of images, so there isn’t a lot of clutter. It’s well executed, I think it’s just the slogan attitude that’s the problem.
I have to agree with you
woodsman (Diary) Wednesday, February 4th at 11:17AM EST (link)The slogan presents a poor image. How long will the the party continue to apologize and act the part laid out by the liberals? Instead of this constant willingness to play the part the liberals have used for talking points for the Pres. Bush years, someone should be figuring out a way to polish the standard conservative values and fight back.
This slogan must have been developed by a liberal sympathizer on staff because I cannot see any way a conservative would sign off on something like this.
Why not just simple say; We don’t know what to do, but we need your money!
Come on people, you can do better than this…
I think the slogan works
MikeG (Diary) Wednesday, February 4th at 11:18AM EST (link)After all, as you admitted, the House GOP DID, in fact, play a significant role in destroying the trust the American people held for the Republican Party. The first step towards breaking any addiction is admitting that you have a problem, and I think it shows maturity and humility (qualities desperately lacking in DC these days) to be so forthright about it. Does it have the zing of “Morning in America”? No. But voters don’t want to hear the same old platitudes; they want something fresh, honest, and conservative.
Also, I believe “Regaining America’s Trust Begins In The House” sets the proper tone and attitude that the Republican Party adopt. There is no finger pointing, no shifting the blame to the majority, the Senate GOP, or President Bush, no high flung “Horatius at the Bridge” rhetoric. If REAL change is going to happen, then we have to do it ourselves, and not merely whine and browbeat others in our party to make it happen. Also, the tone of humility is a first step toward reminding ourselves and those who have forgotten that politicians are the servants, not the rulers, of the people. If I do a bad job at work, or make a mistake, or arrive late, I IMMEDIATELY apologize to my supervisor, explain myself as I am best able, and resolve not to let it happen again. This is the way the real world works; for the House GOP to hold itself to the standards of regular Americans lies at the heart of what our movement is about.
If you change "begins in the house" to
Praying (Diary) Wednesday, February 4th at 12:35PM EST (link)“began in the house” – it might at least imply that the change was already underway, not that it was a nice idea the NRCC was thinking about implementing at some time down the road. Minor point.

I second this.

jrandall95 Wednesday, February 4th at 11:28AM EST (link)I am the eCampaign Director for the NRCC and want first thank everyone for checking out the new site and know we are listening to your thoughts. This site is only the beginning, as we are going to be adding new features (such as a talk back option) and evolving our messages.
Thanks again,
John
I think it's more of an attitude problem, than a feature problem
Jewels Wednesday, February 4th at 12:51PM EST (link)the whole site screams “We are trying really hard not to be as crappy as we once were!” and I just don’t think that’s what people are looking for.

The_Gadfly (Diary) Wednesday, February 4th at 12:59PM EST (link)‘Begins’ is not future tense, and I think the process of regaining America’s trust started in the House when EVERY GOP member voted against the Pelosi Socialist Conversion Bill. It also hasn’t finished, and they will need to keep it up in the future.
One of the keys for the site going forward has to be keeping the site updated. A week or two ago a very liberal colleague of mine was looking at the site and commenting on how sad it was that the site was still proclaiming Republican prosperity in the worst economic crisis we’ve had since the Great Depression ended.

nhrepublican (Diary) Wednesday, February 4th at 1:58PM EST (link)The site design is fine. It isn’t great, but it will do. It is missing an element that makes people want to come back. That’s critical to have. There has to be a newsfeeed or commentary, or something that i can’t get any where else.

If you look to who the NRCC is trying to reach...the slogan in question makes perfect sense to me..
AceInTX (Diary) Wednesday, February 4th at 5:48PM EST (link)Before they can regain the trust of the American people as a whole, they need to rebuild trust with their base in fact…if they are prostrating themselves and begging our forgiveness I think it’s the right position to be in at the moment…trust does begin in the house since it’s the people’s house and they’re not asking every day Americans to give money right now, they’re asking the very base they’ve pissed on for at least six to eight years to send money…I don’t trust them enough to send them anything right now because they’ve been so arrogant and condescending for so long…a little humility on their part is a welcome thing from my perspective and goes a long way to softening my hard line with them!
