Adding yet another chapter in that ever growing book The Decline and Fall of American Education now being written by our teacher’s unions and failed administrations nation wide, Pittsburgh Public Schools will be delayed two hours this Monday. It is assumed, it appears, that teachers will be too tired to make it in on time because of partying for the Superbowl the night before. It is also obviously assumed that parents will be irresponsible enough to allow their kids to stay up past bedtime for a mere football game.
Schools Superintendent Mark Roosevelt has announced the 2 hour delay noting that it is being implemented as a “safety precaution,” whatever that is supposed to mean? For its part, the teachers union said that these delays in the past, usually initiated because of foul weather, have only applied to students and not teachers. This time, though, it applies to the teachers and staff, too. Why? Well, it’s a union payback for that one day they all came to school even though foul weather made the administration cancel school that day, of course.
According to the union Web site, the PFT workers’ inclusion in Monday’s delay is a “makeup” for the inconvenience some experienced Dec. 22, when the district initially called a two-hour weather delay and then canceled school. By that time, the union said, many employees were already at work.
These people call themselves educators? So what are they teaching with this foolishness?
- A game is far more important than school
- Teachers only care about what they can get out of their jobs, who cares about the kids?
- Obligations are not important when it gets in the way of fun
- Comfort is more important than duty
Nice going, Pittsburgh.
It’s bad enough something as ridiculous as a game is being used to alter the schedule of the school day, but the fake reason being given is also a crime. Seriously, what the heck do “safety precautions” have to do with a sports event? How do we get a “safety precaution” out of parents being irresponsible enough to allow their children to stay up well past bedtime and to sleep in late the next day? How do we see the need to act with “precaution” over shirking responsibility because of a silly kid’s game?
Unfortunately, this is yet another example of the downgrading of society. When the Superbowl is more important than school, we really have strayed far from the right path.

They are probably just preparing for possible riots
Elizabeth Christian (Diary) Sunday, February 1st at 3:57AM EST (link)or like you say it could just be they are too tired to make it in on time after they party the night before???
Riots do happen after sport events sometimes – it is a shame and I don’t get why people do that but who knows???
Any society that would give up a little liberty to gain a little security will deserve neither and lose both.

Riots
chrisie (Diary) Sunday, February 1st at 4:04AM EST (link)Maybe they are afraid of riots like Oakland had a few years ago after the Super Bowl. Still, though, you’d think the school superintendent would wait until morning to make the determination whether to delay school.
New Year's Day...
Addison (Diary) Sunday, February 1st at 5:28AM EST (link)…is on the top 5 list for traffic fatalities. I imagine it’s the same deal. Lots of tired or still drunk people on the road after a night of binge drinking.
In any case, it’s 2 hours, right? 2 hours worth of instruction time, on a Monday, in one city, is neither a cause nor a symptom of dysfunction in the American educational system.
Let the kids watch the game! It’s like a homeschooling lesson in local culture.

School on December 22?
GreyCloak (Diary) Sunday, February 1st at 7:46AM EST (link)I don’t know about Pittsburgh, but most school districts I know didn’t have sessions the week of December 25 (Thursday) . If many Pittsburgh teaching or administrative staff showed up on Monday, December 22, more power to them … if a few slackers failed to show up for a non-work day, shame on them.
Monday’s forecast is “cloudy, with a high of 34″ … I think the City of Three Rivers can handle that, despite the potential catastrophe.
If educators can’t deal with hangovers, perhaps the Omni William Penn can help …. if they are still serving the most wonderful Rigstaffel I’ve had the pleasure to consume, it would not be a bad breakfast!
I'm having trouble getting exercised about this one, WTH
Jeff Emanuel (Diary) Sunday, February 1st at 7:58AM EST (link)There hasn’t been a year yet that I haven’t wished the Monday after Super Bowl Sunday had a couple hour buffer on it. Were I a parent or student at one of these schools, I’d be pretty happy about it.
Then again, we disagree about sports as a whole. I think they’re an invaluable part of development and growing up and a fun way to unwind, be distracted, and hold on to youth as an adult.
I’d certainly skip work/school/etc. to watch or attend a Cowboys/Sooners/Braves game, which puts us at odds over the whole issue right from the off.

Did the Steelers need a bailout?
Are the starting lineups of the NFL, MLB, NBA, & NHL constructed by quotas, or does the ability to contribute to wins trump other political concerns?
The “global” sports (American football is not very popular anywhere else), draw on the best talent from across the globe in an exceedingly competitive environment. And here we are in the US turning to socialism.
No, I think America desperately needs the lessons that a thoughtful reflection on the Super Bowl would provide.
Not a model of free markets
lapert Sunday, February 1st at 2:43PM EST (link)I don’t know, with salary caps, luxury taxes, revenue sharing, minimum wages, doesn’t exactly sound like the model of competition to me. And that is before talking about the absurd control the leagues take over players appearance and words (like forbidding players from mentioning hte arbitrary application of the rules by refferees…)
A "mere" football game?
JustLeaveMeAlone (Diary) Sunday, February 1st at 1:20PM EST (link)I’m with JE. You obviously haven’t been a fan in a town where a Super Bowl team was playing. It isn’t just a game — it’s an event of a lifetime.
Two hours of today’s school is something most kids sleep through on a daily basis. Let ‘em have their fun today.

Warner Todd Huston (Diary) Sunday, February 1st at 8:17PM EST (link)I love it when people this you imagine you know all about the life of someone that you don’t know anything about. In FACT I’ve lived in two cities that had Superbowl teams. Idiot.

Aren't we hostile
JustLeaveMeAlone (Diary) Sunday, February 1st at 8:52PM EST (link)I did not resort to name-calling, Warner. You did. Perhaps because so many disagreed with you?
I apologize for assuming you hadn’t lived in a city with a Superbowl team. My mistake. But I still maintain that you are making a mountain out of a molehill, not to mention making a gigantic assumption about me.
I know you are a muckety-muck here, so this may get me thrown out. If so, so be it.

Boo hoo
Warner Todd Huston (Diary) Monday, February 2nd at 3:22AM EST (link)You are still an idiot. But, being a mere idiot is not grounds to have you “thrown out” as far as I know.
But, thus far your being an idiot is pretty obvious. First you claim you know about all the places I’ve lived in my life when you obviously don’t, THEN you claim that I have powers here to have people “thrown out” when I have no such power. I am just a poster, not a board member.
For an idiot, you seem to think you know an awful lot about me, eh? I mean, you have made several idiot assumptions and still claim not to be an idiot. That seems pretty amusing, at least.
… in an idiotic sort of way.
I have a final question: does this response meet the requirements of your tag line?
Idiot.

chaney (Diary) Sunday, February 1st at 8:05AM EST (link)That has been my question to the NFL for as long as the Superbowl kickoff time has been later than 6P Eastern and the game has been artificially, excessively, tediously long.
And please, can somebody tell the promoters that no Bruce Springsteen appearance has ever been, nor will it ever be, “historic”. I know they want to generate enthusiasm, but I don’t think that being so ridiculous that it’s offensive is the way to do it.

Many school districts also have delays and/or cancel classes on the first day of deer hunting season, recognizing the reality that LOTS of students will be “sick” that day.
Cultural phenomena, like hunting and the Super Bowl, are a little more than “just a game,” just as the Mona Lisa is a little more than “just some paint on a canvas.” You may not appreciate that, but don’t be the Puritan who ruins fun for the rest of us.

tankertodd (Diary) Sunday, February 1st at 8:43AM EST (link)I also really can’t get excited about this one. This is a Pittsburgh issue that can best be addressed by Pittsburgh people. If they want to take 2 hours out of the school week for a Bugs Bunny festival that’s their call – the citizens of Pittsburgh can take them to task. Conservatives generally like the idea of local schools under local control. And after living in Pittsburgh myself I suspect in this case, very few Pittsburghers are going to complain about this issue.
This is Pittsburgh, remember, not some new Southern city with fair weather fans. Pittsburghers bleed black and gold. The fact that a shrinking city like Pittsburgh still has a pro football team is a little amazing.
And is a game more important than school? No.
Is a Super Bowl featuring the home town team more important than two hours of school? Yes. It’s not like the kids are going to learn the secret of the genome in those two hours or that this decision is going to slippery slope into missing school for any sporting event.
As long as the schools are accountable to measurable objectives and responsive to the local community, I don’t care how they accomplish those goals.

You might want to unclench your fists of rage for just one Sunday...
smagar (Diary) Sunday, February 1st at 9:12AM EST (link)and pick up the popcorn and a cold one. At least by 6PM EST, that is, when the teams come on the field.
If it helps, I predict the Cardinals will make those Steelers fans want to go to bed early tonight. So they should be well rested for class tomorrow.

Alaska Time is real handy for prime time sporting events.
Achance (Diary) Sunday, February 1st at 10:57AM EST (link)Regular games and races start at 9 AM usually. Kinda tough on Church attendance and probably a major reason that Alaska is among the lowest states in regular church attendance. Super Bowl starts at 2 PM here. I think this will be the first time we’ve ever watched it with no kids or company. Wife doesn’t know what to do with herself because she usually tries to feed an infantry division. My longtime football watching buddy moved south. Another close friend is in Hawaii, others have their own thing going and now both boys are gone. As somebody else points out, that was always one place I could get along with the boys, watching and playing sports. Even in the days when I would have gladly pinched their heads off, we could do that.
And I can’t think of a thing I like about Pittsburg, so I’m rooting for the old guy and the Cardinals – but I didn’t put any money on it.

izoneguy (Diary) Sunday, February 1st at 11:06AM EST (link)Never have liked the Steelers ever since they beat my Cowboys in Super Bowl X. At least we beat the Steelers in Super Bowl XXX for their only Super Bowl loss. And since Obama wants the Steelers we are rooting for the Cardinals….
The point cannot be made often enough: Modern liberalism, as embodied in the Obama presidency, is the defender of the status quo. And the status quo is a road to economic ruin. Political forces cannot redistribute the wealth that the economic system does not produce.
