This particular Palin report is funny for it’s cluelessness, but a spokesman for the Internet search engine company Lycos is astounded that people are still interested enough in Governor Sarah Palin to put her name in the search field of an Internet search engine like Lycos or Google. After all, we have Obama, now, the spokesman says. Why do we need Palin info still?
The quotes from Kathy O’Reilly, a spokeswoman for Lycos, were reported by Politico last week and goes to show that the appeal of Sarah Palin is still little understood in many quarters.
Sarah Palin has stayed in the list of the top 5 Internet searches since she was chosen as John McCain’s running mate in October.
The scope of the GOP ticket’s loss — and the role her critics assigned to her in that defeat — hasn’t cooled interest in Palin. She ranked as the No. 2 top news search at Ask.com this week and No. 2 (after Obama) among newsmakers on the AOL 2008 year-end hottest searches list, and she occupied two slots on Politico’s list of the site’s 10 most searched terms. Palin also ranked fourth among Yahoo searches, behind “Black Friday,” a Czech model and a contestant on the hit television show “Dancing with the Stars.” She was the only politician on the Yahoo top 20 list.
To Lycos spokesman O’Reilly, though, it’s all a mystery.
“People are still searching for her in record numbers,” said Kathy O’Reilly, a spokeswoman for Lycos. “How bizarre is that? Obama is the president-elect after the most historic election of all time and you’d think he would be dominating search activity and he only now is going ahead of her.”
“It’s astounding that someone who should have faded into the background after the election is not only making headlines but being searched for in record numbers online,” said O’Reilly. “People still have a fixation with her, for whatever the reason.”
Politico also makes a mistake that is ubiquitous in the media.
The polarizing role she played in the presidential campaign may also be driving the enduring fascination with all things Palin.
Who says she was “polarizing”? The media does. Again this is a use of false authority. Since they say she is “polarizing” she is. But, it isn’t really because of what she did, what she said or how she campaigned that was really “polarizing.” This claim of polarization is the determination of the anti-Republican, anti-conservative media and they all echo it dutifully. Just as the media proclaimed the war in Iraq lost — until it was won — just as they proclaimed John McCain’s campaign finished several times before he actually won the nomination, and just as the press universally assumes the “fact” of global warming, the media relies on its false authority to proclaim the “truth” of a situation and then they all echo the claim in unison. Even when proven wrong, they simply move on to proclaim the next “truth” and promulgate that as an authorized determination that defies debate.
Still, it is amusing that this Lycos woman and Politico just don’t understand why anyone would be interested in Sarah Palin. After all, they have all determined that she is finished, right? And we have The One to save us. So, who needs her?

They are trying anything and everything to tear her down, yet she stands tall and strong. Sarah if left alone and let to do her thing would win, even with the liberals attacking her. She is a leader in the GOP, the liberals can deal with it, fight it, or whatever they want to do, but they will not stop it ; )

I agree the media created the perception....
jazzycmk (Diary) Friday, December 5th at 7:16PM EST (link)….of Sarah as a polarizing figure, but unfortunately that tag is going to now somewhat stick if you look at opinion polls. There is very little middle ground about Sarah Palin.
To put it in college football terms, she is now the Notre Dame of the political arena. People either love her (myself included) or hate her.
Contrast that to Joe Biden. He had his brief moment in the sun at the VP debate (thank to Palin who drew the ratings), but has now fallen back into obscurity. People could care less about Joe Biden.
Let me give you an example, I went out for drinks with co-workers shortly before the election. I rarely talk politics with co-workers because it’s just not worth it, but one of the admin assistants brought up the election with me. She asked for whom I was voting and all I said was McCain. She immediately jumped to Palin and asked how I could vote for a ticket with “that woman” on it. Adding that “Sarah Palin makes me want to puke”. I was somewhat stunned. I asked her that, as a woman, even if she didn’t agree with her politics, didn’t she at least admire the fact that Palin was a self-made woman, who had accomplished everything on her own, without a wealthy family, or a powerful husband. Isn’t she the poster child for feminist empowerment? That didn’t matter a whit to my co-worker. This is not an uncommen response.
I think the world of Sarah, but if she has aspirations for higher office in the future she is going to have a daunting task of softening the views of those that are dead set against her.

When she was first selected, I thought she was a shrewd choice on a number of levels, one of which being that, as a woman, she would be difficult to attack. Whoa, was I wrong about that one.
I still laugh at these reports of voters being supposedly turned off by the McCain camp’s negative tactics against Obama. Can the MSM really report that one with a straight face after the hit job they helped to spawn against Palin?

“No one would apply the word “dumb” to Barack Obama (born in 1961) or Timothy F. Geithner, his nominee for secretary of the Treasury (born in the same month). Yet the president-elect himself has written eloquently about how hard it was for him and his peers to obtain a serious education during their dazed-and-confused teen years. Like it or not, Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin (born in 1964), who stumbled over basic civics facts during her vice presidential run, is more representative of this group.”

Aside from the gratuitous slap at Gov. Palin,
Achance (Diary) Sunday, December 7th at 10:47AM EST (link)the part of the story that WaPo and other liberals won’t touch is that the precipitous decline in test scores was conincident with more and more people taking those tests. Until the late ’60s, early ’70s the SAT was only taken by that small cohort of students who either had the family money and tradition to go to college or had demonstrated enough ability to attract scholarships; others weren’t going to college and weren’t interested in paying to take what was then a very rigorous test. The other standardized testing was limited to the most affluent school districts until the National Defense Education Act. Only in the early ’60s did Southern and rural school districts begin participatiing in the standardized testing. This was also roughly coincident with school integration in The South. It goes without saying that separate but equal was anything but equal and the products of the Jim Crow system were thrown into the testing mix. Then the test scores plummeted. The dirty little secret that the WaPo and other liberals can’t admit is that the response to plummeting test scores hasn’t been any program to actually improve student achievement but rather to smash down the rigor of the testing to make it look like there is achievent and overlaying the whole self-esteem and multi-cultural fraud to make students feel good about being dumb.
Interestingly, the whole integration, inclusion, multi-culturalism, self-esteem crap has re-invented the educational system it sought to do away with. Just like the schools of the Jim Crow Era, schools today can still do a pretty good job of educating kids with a family background of education and achievement and the rest just fall out into whatever level of the job market or welfare system their limited abilities and personal prospects dictate.

Scope (Diary) Sunday, December 7th at 12:00PM EST (link)That is so correct. I took the SAT’s in the late 60′s, and they were not easy. Many of my classmates didn’t score high enough to get into many colleges. That was in Pennsylvania, which back then had a very good reputation for their educational system throughout the state. I think it ranked something like 3rd in the nation. That was before it was overrun by the liberals that as you say like to make some feel good about being dumb. Isn’t it Obama’s pledge to make college more affordable and available to everyone, even those who can’t graduate middle school? Just a day ago I saw a news piece on Fox where a black female school principle was interviewd by I think Chris Wallace. She said that she is pushing for lowering school testing standards so that her students could feel as though they achieved something, or some such nonsense. That is happening throughout the country as you have said. Doesn’t that make you feel like a brain surgeon LOL

Just who determined who the “hopefuls” are? We all know Huck-a-pee is very hopeful, and has stated as much. At the end of the story they say a CNN/Opinion Research Corp. poll was taken of 460 Republican and Independents leaning republican voters. On CNN TV they showed this poll a few nights ago. Those results were 34% Huck-a-pee and 32% Palin, Romney had something like 26% and on down.
Why is CNN doing polls of the 2012 Republican pres. race, before their man Obama is even inaugrated. The Headlines are “Huckabee tops poll among 2012 hopefuls. Could it be that they are already preparing to choose our next loser candidate? This is what the Conservatives are going to have to fight against for the next 4 years. Sarah haters vs. Sarah lovers
peg_c (Diary) Monday, December 8th at 9:07PM EST (link)I’ve noticed one of the biggest identifying factors in whether one hates or loves Sarah (almost no one is indifferent) is whether one believes or disbelieves the MSM. People who hate her believe all the lies the MSM was saying about her starting Aug. 30. Those of us who love her don’t believe the MSM, lots of us don’t watch or read the MSM, and we tend to cheer at news of the impending death of the MSM.
Yes, the haters and the lovers pretty much align with libs/conservatives and Dems/Reps, but not exactly, as we conservatives have been so rudely reminded by our less conservative fellow Republicans. (And also there’s Camille Paglia.)
I never want to vote again for a Republican-lite. Sarah at least allowed me to vote for McCain and keep a bit of self-respect. She actually made me enthusiastic. She has to be the Dems’ and liberals’ worst nightmare and this is why they continue to be obsessed. (That, and the fact that they cannot yet face what they’ve done by electing BHO.)

Yes, but she also represent a new model...
GB221 (Diary) Tuesday, December 9th at 12:44AM EST (link)…for the emancipation of women. This is a model that presents a positive alternative to the only model that has been proposed and imposed in all possible ways for the last 40 years , i.e., the standard ‘women liberation’ model. That model does not work. Women don’t want to give up maternity and femininity as a prerequisite to career success. Many women have sensed that for a long time but no example was available to show a way of emancipation outside liberal feminism.. Sarah Palin provides such a model and example. This is why so many love her and, of course, why those stuck in the old ‘progressive’ paradigm hate her.
See also the article by Marjorie Dannenfelser in the 12/15/08 issue of the Weekly Standard.
Agree 100%
peg_c (Diary) Tuesday, December 9th at 5:50AM EST (link)Her slap in the face of traditional feminism probably is the #1 reason they hate her. I can’t agree more. I just noted the division followed the pro-MSM/anti-MSM division as well.
The hatred traditional feminist women express for Sarah is a huge phenomenon. I cannot think of another female politician who is as self-made as Sarah Palin (unless it’s someone like Michelle Bachman). The majority hitch themselves to fathers’ or husbands’ coattails a la Hillary. No female politicians approved of by the lefty Emily’s List crowd of feminazis ever show a scintilla of independent thought, principles. or reform-mindedness. Sarah threatens their entire, carefully built structure of hogwash. You have to have rejected that hogwash, or you have to reject Sarah (and be hysterical about it).
Government cannot be the solution when government is the problem.
Who says she's polarizing? the polls do!
PBCliberal Thursday, December 11th at 1:09AM EST (link)By November, Palin’s favorable/unfavorable was 48/47%, within the MOE. When the don’t knows/unsures are 6% and the rest are split over whether she’s good or bad, she’s polarizing.
If this were Hillary Clinton being discussed, I’m sure that point would be easily understood around here.
Definition of polarizing
GB221 (Diary) Thursday, December 11th at 1:13PM EST (link)If the definition of ‘polarizing’ in taken to be the fact that pro and cons are split very close to 50/50, then any person who is not elected in a landslide is a polarizing figure.
Favorable/unfavorable
PBCliberal Thursday, December 11th at 4:34PM EST (link)Is not the same as which candidate you’re going to vote for. The poll questions are phrased differently. Its more likely that an election will be a near tie if both candidates have high favorables.
Polarizing
GB221 (Diary) Thursday, December 11th at 5:18PM EST (link)You are correct in saying that it matters how the question is phrased. In fact, it matters how one reads ‘favorable’. If ‘favorable’ is read as meaning ‘in favor of’ ( voting for this person) then what I said remains valid. If one reads ‘favorable’ as meaning ‘liking’ the candidate as a person, then a close to 50/50 split means indeed a ‘polarization’ of views (about the candidate’s persona), which is likely to translate in a close to 50/50 split also in the vote. But a close to 50/50 split in vote happens often even when both candidates are viewed favorably as persons. Thus, this concept of ‘polarization’ in how the personalities of the candidates are perceived has little political validity.
It's not like polls are ever wrong, right? she is only polarizing...
JadedByPolitics (Diary) Thursday, December 11th at 5:00PM EST (link)for the left of center crowd in the right of center crowd she is a delight! which would be where the 48 are which is exactly what McCain got in the vote…funny that!
