We have dozens more wild turkeys roaming our pastures this year than in years past. I’m quite sure that this phenomenon is causing a catastrophic rise in methane and CO2, which will in turn trigger a warming effect in our swimming pool, resulting in a reduced need to run pool water through the rooftop solar heater, causing the house to become lighter and exert less pressure on the ground, allowing the earth to rise and triggering more earthquakes.

I’m pretty sure, anyway. Lots of experts, like Charlie on the third barstool down at Ralph’s Hog Pen Saloon, say so.

Trying to convince anyone they can that every hiccup the earth makes is caused by us.

Unfortunately, there are simple minds who will allow this picture to form in their heads and agree with it, without questioning the premise. Then they will log into Twitter and Facebook…

Another amazingly convenient “scientific” discovery…

… will probably be the bext “scientific” theory. Maybe they’re jealous that we have cars while they use fiery chariots harnessed to the sun.

Reading today’s “science” headlines on just about any hot-button science topic is humorously close to reading the fanciful theories of medieval medicine, or the superstitious beliefs of tribal cultures. At least, it would be humorous if the only authorized party-line weren’t enforced in such dead seriousness. HOW do those idiots keep a straight face to repeat such trash?

“Global Warming” my foot…. just come right out and tell us that “karma” is punishing humans for our technological progress…. or that the earth gods are shaking the tree the world is perched on in their anger. GAW is the liberal’s name for the earth gods, of course. Right all the headlines with that in mind and you’ll have a hoot with how ridiculous their “logic” is!

The Earth shudders in Haiti (depth = 8 mi). Then Chile (depth = 22 mi). Then western China (depth = 11 mi). Mexicali-Calexico (depth = 6 mi). The Solomon Islands (depth = 37 mi). Spain (depth = 385 mi). New Guinea (depth = 19 mi).

Glaciers are, what – hundreds and hundreds of feet thick. If I remember correctly, ice floats and rocks sink. That must mean that rocks are much denser than ice is. As you stated: “…not even a pimple on Mother Gaia’s backside.”

I especially loved that line “And it’s only April.” as if earthquakes are a seasonal phenomena.

If I remember correctly from 1st Grade science class, when ice melts, it becomes water. That water weighs EXACTLY the same amount as the water from which it came. Seriously…where do they get these idiots?

I may be missing something here but the statement that less ice means less weight on the crust, doesn’t take into account that when ice melts it become water. The ice doesn’t evaporate and the earth isn’t losing weight.

There is no statistical evidence for a recent increase in earthquake frequency or intensity. We have global seismological data for decades and a considerable amount of evidence in the rock record that allows us to estimate earthquake frequency back much further. When one looks at the data they show all sorts of wiggles and bumps, but no discernible trend up or down. Earthquakes happen. They are an inevitable consequence of the movement of Earth’s tectonic plates. That will never change.

What has changed recently is that the press has covered earthquakes that they would have ignored 5 years ago. Of course, I am sure algore could see a trend in earthquake activity, if he passed the data through Michael Mann’s hockey stick algorithm. Then again, with the hockey stick I could probably prove the average body temperature of humans in America has increased by 5 degrees in the past century using all the measurements taken in doctors’ offices during that time.

The recent apparent increase in earthquake activity is very similar to the dramatic increase in all sorts of ailments in the past several decades. That is, what has increased is our awareness of them, not their actual occurrence rate. Of course, for those who believe that perception and reality are one and the same, my comments merely prove their point.

There’s no evidence he ever took geology at all – and strong anecdotal evidence he did not, given his theory elucidated in the article, which even a precocious child would find laughable.

Understandable, though. In order to be a leftist, one must suspend disbelief, and accept things which cannot be true, have never been true, and in many cases have been repeatedly demonstrated to be untrue. Virtually all of leftist dogma is tied together with false premises.

It comes as no surprise when a leftist invents some ridiculous howler of a theory like this. It fits into his world view, so to him it must be true. Little details like actual science are the realm of eeeeevil skeptics . . .

This is truly hilarious. But, I’m sure there are wingnuts out there who will buy this stuff. Last year, I was looking at some blogposts on HuffingPuffington Post and was amazed by this high school science teacher’s take on Global Warming. He outlined this bizarre scenario [must have just watched 'Day After Tomorrow'] where a huge icesheet from the melting glaciers slides off Greenland because of the water underneath. It falls into the ocean causing a ‘thermal conversion’ that freezes the whole world. I don’t think the guy even knows what a thermal conversion is, but he had the whole thing figured out. No doubt, Al Gore has entertained the same kinds of fantasies in his own head too.

Who knew the fire was from Pittsburgh?

Good points about the relationship between global warming and earthquakes. Certainly melting ice does not cause all earthquakes.

But try this out: set a full cup of coffee on the edge of your bed, walk around to the other side and sit down. Don’t be shy; sit down hard. Spill any coffee? Damn straight, you do. Certainly Earth is big, but it’s also all connected. The mantle is a closed system and the only outlets are the weakest links. And you got it right, those weakest links are typically at tectonic plate boundaries.

You’re also right that the end of the last Ice Age melted a helluva lot more ice than this wimpy warming, but you’re wrong to characterize the end of the last Ice Age as sudden. The melting progressed slowly over a period of more than ten thousand years. I suppose geologically that’s moderately fast, but not sudden. And a lot more ice has melted recently than one glacier in Iceland — many millions of tons in the Arctic tundra, Greenland, Antarctica and mountain glaciers around the world.

Right at the end of the last Ice Age, Earth experienced the greatest thrust of the glacial isostatic adjustment (post-glacial rebound and its opposite effect). That was the elastic phase, yet we’re still experiencing the slow phase of that adjustment even today. The coastline of Scandinavia is still changing. What was once an ocean cove is now an inland lake. Scotland is rising while London sinks. Is that adjustment having any effect on earthquakes and volcanoes? Hmmm-m-m, I would think maybe. If an earthquake may happen in 30 years without this adjustment, would it happen sooner with? Would the strength of it be any different? Perhaps.

You’re right about not being blinded by what we consider “normal.” Things change in nature. That’s normal. But show a little compassion for their overzealousness. I’ll try to show some for yours. Humility in the search for truth is a good thing. A wise man once said that the one who has never done anything wrong should go ahead and throw the first stone. Don’t throw stones. They may come back.

like a senator from Tennessee does, being that all earthquakes happen there and not here. But, I took the Rocks for Jocks class at the UW anyway. My instructor wasn’t a world renowned scientist, with a Nobel to show for it, like our ex-VP. He was never in line to succeed our Liar-in Chief. But he did actually study Geology.
He spun this yarn about one plate sub-ducting under the other; In our case the ocean plate going under the continental plate. Instead of one moving slowly over the other, the rock at the leading edges of the plate would bind together, resisting slipping past one another. Rather than moving, the rock would compress, year after year. Sometimes after a couple decades it would break free and move a bit, causing a small tremor, other times it would build up for a century, then give way for tremendous slippage, and a catastrophic earthquake (8.5-9.2) would occur.
Well, we may know about earthquakes like Tennesee Al, but we can spin a pretty good yarn. Art in Alaska had better take heed though, the Mendenhall Glacier has receded about half a mile.

I mentioned Tuesday immigration was on the fastrack, and its bumped everything else out including the climate bill. They’ll get their Wall Street bill cleared up, then immigration as they threatened. Senator Lindsey Graham somehow got stuck working on both climate and immigration, so he’s calling some shots.

So for thiose tuned into the climate bill…you can “breathe easy” for a bit. That cloud of polluted air coming from DC is supposedly held in check for awhile.
