Yesterday morning, Kiran Chetry and some pretty-boy on CNN Morning expressed their shock and horror at the day’s Big Story: the death of a Sea World trainer at the hands flukes of a killer whale.
Huh? Why do you think they call them killer whales? Free Willy wasn’t a documentary, after all.
Why is anyone surprised when animals do what animals do? Killer whales are dangerous, and that’s the attraction. People aren’t flocking to see Sea World’s “Manatee Daredevils”.
Remember when Roy (or was it Seigfried?) was mauled by his tiger? Rememberwhen that grizzly guy became grizzly chow?
The CNN anchors observed that, in the wild, orcas (a/k/a killer whales) are known to play with seals and dolphins, tossing them playfully in the air. Right. The same way I playfully toss M&M Peanuts in the air, before scarfing.
The lunacy continued, with Chetry/Pretty Boy seeking the answer to “Why did it happen?” “Maybe he [the killer whale] ran into a wall.” I honestly don’t know if they meant that literally or if it was an attempt at psycho-whale-babble.

If my dog would so much as nip at anyone, the Animal Control folks would show up with a Barrett .50 to put him down. Yet this “gentle creature of the sea” has killed 3 people – I say lets make some lamp oil!
Shocked that an orca, aka “Killer whale”, aka “the wolves of the sea” would actually … kill? Yeah, those same people are also “Shocked” that the stimulus hasn’t created jobs.
I am still all for making her into lamp oil. Export her fat butt to Japan.

This is death #3 attributed to this particular “wild-capture” orca and happened in front of everyone in a show. What happens when it gets depressed enough to end it all by breaching itself on the crowd? A 6 ton, 40 foot, THRASHING whale could easily take out 15 or 20 in a final swan-song.
Just saying.

If you live where I live, you're not at the top of the food chain
Achance (Diary) Friday, February 26th at 9:59AM EST (link)unless you’re very well prepared. I see “killer whales” or orcas practically every time I take the boat out in spring and summer. The have absolutely NO fear of man and are oblivious to the presence of a boat. I’ve never seen any evidence of any whale being afraid of man. They may be in other waters where they are still hunted, but they sure aren’t afraid of man or of boats here. I’ve been in a 24′ boat when a 50′ Humpback Whale decided to breach 20′ away; that’ll give you a sense of humility! Orcas will come right alongside seemingly just to look at you. They’re not nearly as big as Humpbacks, but they are very large and impressive animals. A big male’s dorsal fin is commonly six or eight feet tall and their teeth are impressive.
I’ve never had any sense that the Humpbacks would intentionally do anything to harm me but they’re so oblivious to you and so big that they’re dangerous just like any large animal is dangerous even if they’re not trying to kill you for food or territory. I do get the sense that if an Orca were hungry and you were handy, you’d be lunch.
And then there’s Brown Bears.

This is NOT a fish. (Like Mauldroon said on Jurassic Park about the raptors, “They … remember.”) This is a HIGHLY intelligent animal. I have read somewhere that they are actually “self-aware.” I am willing to bet that they even have some sense of “right and wrong.”
When you have an animal, a predator, who is not handicapped by relying solely on instinct and can actually “think”, you have a very dangerous sentient being on your hands.
Now, factor in 6.5 tons of testosterone driven muscle in an environment that they EXCEL in, and then, well, lets just say that it sucks to be weak link of that particular food chain….

Well, for me it is "Colonel" Mossberg.
Achance (Diary) Friday, February 26th at 12:03PM EST (link)If I’m going further than Auke Bay and Shelter Island, where there are no Brown Bears, that 12 guage goes with me. I have a Remington 870 that is blued and has a wooden stock and foregrip. Life on a boat in salt water is really hard on a traditional gun. Mossberg makes what they call a “marine” model of the 500 that has an epoxy finish and polymer stock and foregrip, so the 870 stays home and the Mossy goes to the boat.
Admiralty, Baranoff, and Chichagof Islands all have large Brown Bear populations and you often see them on the beach or when the salmon are running at the stream mouths. Almost never does a year go by without a hunter on one of those islands losing an argument over a deer with a Brownie and getting mauled or killed. If you take a deer over there, you want to either store it in a tree and well away from you or get it to your boat or plane quickly. Bears have learned that hunters will do the work for them and will just follow hunters. Black-tailed deer aren’t any bigger than a good sized dog, so I’ve never had any real interest in hunting them and I really, really, really don’t like being the hunted rather than the hunter.

conservative_faction Friday, February 26th at 9:23AM EST (link)since apparently, this particular orca is worth millions of dollars as a stud for Sea World. Despite the fact that the whale has killed not one, not two, but THREE people now, I doubt that Sea World will do much of anything with him other than continue to keep him in a tank.
Until this whale snatches a four year old off of a rail, I would bet that he won’t go anywhere.
I never thought that he would be put down anyway because that would be a PR nightmare for Sea World, even if the whale “acted stupidly”.

What I have found so curious about this whole thing is that the media is so wrapped up in “why this happened” as if there was some hidden answer in there somewhere. None of the talking heads in the media can seem to grasp that this isn’t some pet. It’s not a 6.5 ton goldfish, but a wild animal that has been kept in the equivalent of a bathtub since 1992.
Dogs and cats can be kept because of years of domestication. But people who look at wild animals as toys will continue to learn the hard way.

Killer Whales eat seals and sea lions. Indian men eat Killer Whales. It’s normal. What’s not normal is for a whale to have a twitter acount.

What is also not normal is for a whale to “remain an “active, contributing member of the team” at SeaWorld.

Here is how a people try to remain dignified in this perverted world of legalism and animal rights.

Don’t let the title Land Rights and Enviromentalism fool you, that is the parlance of today’s world. It’s about preserving what rights they have left, and maintaining their culture.
If Tilikum truly has human emotions, let him suffer the consequences of a Killer Man. If not, let him re-enter the food chain.
That Orca can't realistically be returned to the wild;
Achance (Diary) Friday, February 26th at 3:28PM EST (link)he is 30 years old and has spent his whole adult life in captivity. He wouldn’t be able to socialize with a pod in all probability and it is questionable how good his hunting skills would be. When they tried to “free” the real Free Willy whale, he wouldn’t leave; just hung out near where they released him until he disappeared apparently having died, at least that’s the story I heard from some of the whale guys here.

The whole thing is just so unnatural
hickorystick (Diary) Friday, February 26th at 4:03PM EST (link)You make a good point that it wouldn’t be a good hunt, without the whale having had the chance to learn from it’s mother, like you described above. Still, if the Indians wanted to cull the herd, fine with me. I would leave that up to the Elders of that community. I would only interfere to stop over fishing.
We visited a man who lived a little north of Auke Bay, going towards Burners Bay, who rehabilitated all kinds of animals. He was currently e-habbing a Bald Eagle who had broken it’s leg. Crazy scene, we were greated by his pet monkey in the driveway, then the eagle hobbled up to see what was going on. Wasn’t about to try to pet the bird or make it my friend. Certainly didn’t know what it was thinking or feeling. The man said he would release the bird when it recuperated, but it had something north of 50% chance of making it in the wild again.
Main point, I would prefer the Indians killing whales and connecting with the earth, than tipping bottles and connecting with the gutter. Easteners are clueless do-gooders who disrupt every enviroment and economy they touch. When they figure out how to run a bank, then come talk to us.
Now we have a "Raptor Center"
Achance (Diary) Friday, February 26th at 4:24PM EST (link)that takes in sick or wounded birds. They actually seem to do a pretty good job of rescuing them. The Greenies are all in an uproar because they finally lost at the USSC and the Kensington Mine is going to go into production this year and the Greenies claim it will be the end of Berner’s Bay.
I never figured out the charm of Berner’s Bay; it is very silty, never caught any good fish there, and it can be awfully buggy.

I like the idea of a Raptor center
hickorystick (Diary) Friday, February 26th at 5:06PM EST (link)It can be educational for the kids and inspire them to study things outside of school. The guy who was taking care of the birds worked a lot cheaper though. I think the Fish and Wildlife Dept. was bringing him some of the animals and birds.
glad to here the Kensington Mine is open. I don’t remember it being in operation in the early 70′s. I heard Palin spittin and puffin a while ago about a gold mine operation, but hadn’t realized it was that one. Of course the Greenies wouldn’t want someone producing gold, when wealth can be legislated from one pocket to another.
We would visit the bible camp that was at the end of the road, going through the marsh, then around the left side of the bay. I thought it was a beautiful spot. There were not that many flat areas to walk around Juneau, so that was part of the appeal. If you go across the river that is at the far side of the bible camp, there were a some bears that would hang out there during the summer. The Directors of the camp would lock and load, and mount up to go across the river to retrieve any horses that had wandered across the river.
By the way
hickorystick (Diary) Friday, February 26th at 5:21PM EST (link)The man who took care of the camp in the winter was an old Alaska Salt who could talk to bears, and did many times when he made a wrong turn. He wasn’t a fool about it though, he carried a large bore rifle if he took more than five steps out of the cabin.
Life is about taking risks, Killer Whales Kill
ssohara (Diary) Friday, February 26th at 3:08PM EST (link)I love nature. I loved to go hiking when I lived in Colorado, I have friends who hunt, and I have a lot of respect for nature. I think it’s a good thing to preserve natural spaces. I’m antisocial enough that I need to get away from people sometimes, being out with nothing but fresh air, mountains, etc., is wonderful. However, I know when I go out there that I could become cougar food if I’m not careful. But that’s a risk I am willing to take. Part of the problem with our culture is that we try to sanitize everything – make everything risk free. Just like life isn’t fair, living carries risks.
I don’t think the killer whale did anything wrong by killer whale standards. We as people are idiots for thinking we can keep a huge wild animal like that in what amounts to a fishbowl – those animals are designed for roaming over huge territories, hunting and killing, etc. If the trainers want to spend time with these animals, fine, but they are taking a risk – just like that Grizzly guy was taking a risk and eventually he got eaten.
When Christ comes back, the lion will lay down with the lamb. Until then, it’s nature red in tooth and claw.
There is no record of Orcas attacking humans in the wild.
Achance (Diary) Friday, February 26th at 3:51PM EST (link)The last commenter I saw on this incident was relying on some home video of people who saw the incident and he concluded that it really was just the kind of tragic accident that can happen with large animals. The Orca pulled her back into the pool with him because he wanted more attention and in doing so drowned her. They’re intelligent as animals go, but it wouldn’t occur to an Orca that somebody would have to breath in such a short time under water; they can’t stay under nearly as long as the big whales but they can stay under a lot longer than a human.
I’ve had more than a few fairly bad scratches from my cats reaching out to grab me because they wanted more attention or food. Same thing except my cats weigh 20 pounds or so and the Orca weighs 12,000.

That is a big cat, Achance. LOL nt

Actually, I have three cats:
Achance (Diary) Friday, February 26th at 9:04PM EST (link)they’re siblings, twelve years old. one is a jet black tom, Jack, that weighs in at about 23 lbs. and is huge, not an ounce of fat on him, one is a yellow tabbly tom, Garfield, (the kids named him) that usually runs 24-25 lbs. but has been up near 28 pre-diet, he’s a little smaller framed but “rounder” than the black one, and the mistress of the house, in fact the mistress of the universe is a calico female, Gizmo, who checks in at about 12 lbs. Their mother only weighed 8 lbs, but like Topsy, these guys grew and grew and grew. They are very socialized and affectionate, but they are so large and so strong and fast that they can really hurt you, so you have to very careful handling them.

Animals like the orcas should not be kept
arrowhead Friday, February 26th at 3:11PM EST (link)I think the Planet of the Apes movie should put it into perspective. I mean imagine if the shoe were on the other foot and we were forced to perform for the animals. And in a minimized environment . I hunt & fish and I know it has its place but wild animals should not be kept in cages for our selfish entertainment. If you need to be entertained by wildlife get outdoors in their real environment. I don’t blame the whale for killing, after all Charlton Heston killed alot of those damn dirty apes for freedom
Full disclosure
Steve Maley (Diary) Friday, February 26th at 4:27PM EST (link)I did not see The Lion King six times, either the movie or the musical production.
In fact, I did not see it once.
Just didn’t want to mislead anyone; I considered it artistic license.
