They are, and they can’t.
I defer to the things written by TheSophist and eburke this week. The best writers in the land can’t add to what they said.
Even if the House carries the vote (which vote, I’m still not sure) the chances of it ever becoming law is still less than 50/50. And the chances of it ever being implemented in a majority of the several states is virtually nil. While we railed for days about the unconstitutionality of the Slaughter, the process is still constitutionally flawed now that Slaughter has been deemed to be shelved, and will be challenged forthwith. But even Fox News has lost light of the fact that the substance of the law, that of mandating free American citizens to buy a product…whether offered by an insurance company or the state…is a grievous interference with our liberty. That only stands at the top of as long list of substantive “usurprations” in this bill.
Moreover, finally, I think most of the GOP is beginning to get it. Even if they still may be unwilling to take the gloves off, I think they’re ready to exchange those dainty white cotton ones for some leather mitts.
All that is important to me is that we take names, especially of those I referred to as “craven dogs”, the 100 or so who have simply taken the line of least resistance…or so they thought. Their punishment begins tomorrow, and it is our job to see it done….from being shunned by their GOP colleagues in Washington, to having to sneak in the back door of their district offices back home. I’m making my Christmas card list as we speak.

Beaglescout (Diary) Monday, March 22nd at 4:46PM EST (link)We need to draw a clear demark between Jack Kennedy Democrats and the modern Fascist/Socialist Democrats in the Barack Hussein Obama cult. Here’s why. When Kathryn Jean Lopez went to the DC protests on Saturday, the first two people she ran into were registered Democrats. Democrats hate this bill too! They are with Republicans on this. We need to keep this about individual freedom versus a coercive federal government.

To me, “consensus” seems to be the process of abandoning all beliefs, principles, values and policies. So it is something in which no one believes and to which no one objects … There are still people in my party who believe in “consensus” politics. The Dead Statesman, Kipling. Originally written in “Epitaphs of the War” but surprisingly apt for some “statesmen” today.
“If you love wealth more than liberty, the tranquility of servitude better than the animating contest of freedom, depart from us in peace. We ask not your counsel nor your arms. Crouch down and lick the hand that feeds you. May your chains rest lightly upon you and may posterity forget that you were our countrymen.”—Samuel Adams

Are leaders made or born?
Beaglescout (Diary) Monday, March 22nd at 4:48PM EST (link)The military has the creation of leaders down to a science, but you need a certain quality of raw material to start with. I think it’s that way with statesmen. They are, after all, politicians who do not blow with the wind.

That's a damn fine definition Beaglescout.

Thoughts on the process...
acat (Diary) Monday, March 22nd at 10:31PM EST (link)From here, the strategy to get rid of this case study in unconstitutional legislating takes a few different paths.
On one front, challenges and delaying tactics in the courts should keep implementation on hold for a little while.
On another front, nullification from the States may bear fruit. Even if only a few states nullify, people may vote with their feet and move to where taxes are (quite legally lower) … We’ll see if prosperity follows.
On another front, it’s less than a year until we get a new Congress who can modify or (better) just flush this crap bill.
My concern is that there will still be enough big-government Lindsey Graham or John McCain types on the Repub side for whom repeal is anathema – giving up power that they foolishly believe can be used for good.
Thank you, Vassar – another great one. Keep writing!

Vassar, What are the chances I'll get my money back?
SoFiMil (Diary) Monday, March 22nd at 10:42PM EST (link)*If* the bill or a portion of it is ruled unconstitutional, will all the money the federal government is collected for four years have to be returned–with interest? I’m not a lawyer, and I would think the answer is not a chance. Politically, I realize my chances are much better of getting it back through a tax cut, etc.
