Just How Serious Is the Threat Level for Conservative Bloggers?

Two pertinent diaries this past week on RedState amplify this question, which, no doubt is nagging in the back of many people’s minds. When does it turn ugly, and what do we do when it does?

One is Beaglescout’s Great Lie of Partisan Tolerance which is an important piece of research (at least to me) in that it connects the dots on Marxist theory from the 60′s to current Leftish thinking in the US, and what we call “deconstructive thinking”, which at its most base level, allows someone, usually a college kid who has read more than two books without pictures, to be able to tell himself that day is night and dark is light…in other words, shape the world into to any form that he/she wishes. Many trolls who visit here are of this narcissistic mindset, having shaped their own separate reality.

While Bernie Chumm (and I, to a lesser degree) believe these younger skulls filled with mush can be “gotten to” by certain kinds of argument, it’s clear the dyed-in-wool lefties can’t. For good or ill, Beaglescout has established here a rule we need to take heed of; those people, in the end, will not sit down and parlay…at least in good faith. In fact, the pathological pose Obama gave to House Republicans on Friday only amplifies this growing sense, and fear, that self-delusion has finally reached the highest levels of academic accreditation. (So thank your lucky stars that Thomas Sowell, and Beaglescout, et al are on your side.) There are none so committed as those who are committed to their own vanities. Which begs the obvious question, in the end, what will we do with them?…before they do it to us?

The second diary is Finrod’s exposition on the threats made against Hillbuzz for having done, as the esteemed Maxine Waters says, a “three-sixty”, by apologizing to George Bush for their prior cries of high crimes against him, and then, calling out OB1 for current ones. More to the point, Finrod tells us 1) Hillbuzz had been outed, i.e., actual name(s) revealed, and 2) they’ve received threats of violence.

My question…and it is a question…in light of what Beaglescout tells us about the mindset, how serious is that threat? And if to Hillbuzz, how about members here? Or Tea Partiers, who are even more naked? Glenn Beck has a security detail. So does Limbaugh. How soon before EE has to get one, as well? Is this a latent threat? A present threat?

I have a couple of observations. On a scale of 1 to 10, I’d say the current threat level is X, for you see, even venturing that openly, here, is dangerous. If I said 9, then I would be playing to the false bravado that indeed does infect the vast majority of these sonnenkinder-who-make-anonymous-threats, feeding their egos. But if I said 2 I’d be pooh-poohing what may only be a handful of people who are deep in this movement but have both the willingness and capability to carry out a more serious mission….just to prove me wrong. So I say to you, fill in the blank, then keep that number to yourself.

What we do know is that similar threats have abounded since 2000, especially on the internet, but also via telephone, as when names, addresses are “accidentally” released by the media (remember that poor girl who called Arlen Specter out at the Town Hall meeting in the summer?…or of course, poor Joe the Plumber, for whom I am still waiting for the Ohio Secretary of State to be frog-marched over to the courthouse?). But one rarely sees reports of an actual incident, a rock through the window, a pentagram burning in the front yard, blue hoods instead of white, and certainly no bodies strewn around. This tells me that verbal threats alone are probably not much of a threat at all, probably for one of two reasons; the threats were only intended to be nothing more than words, or, no one has yet to give the “Go Order”.

So, teatty your cards. Seriously, as it may not always be this way.

People like Beck and Limbaugh have had enough experience with this that they have people who can separate “real” threats from posturing. We don’t. I really doubt that anyone is stalking Glenn Beck with a zip-lock pool cue case, but if it got around that he sneaked out of Radio City every night at the same time and walked through two blocks of alleys to sneak a smoke, he is stupidly making himself an easy target of opportunity. So, yes, then the roof tops would be lined with marksmen. It’s sort of like if you just decide to take a drive through certain neighborhoods of Miami…at 2 AM…just to see what it’s like at that time of the morning. What hungry lion could pass up an easy meal like that?

Verbal threats are intended to frighten and worry and cause changes in one’s ordinary life that in fact may make them sit down and reconsider some of their public positions. (In the Vietnam days, SDS and others called parents of GI’s, usually in small towns, to tell them their sons were murderers. Or had been killed. In a sense, that tactic worked, and Barack Obama has made common cause with some of the people who dreamt those “legal” acts of terror up.) Also there aren’t just threats of harm or physical violence, but threats of exposure. In the old days, gays were especially susceptible to this, but today, just a real name revealed (since most of us use aka’s…I searched all the Mississippi phone directories for Beaglescout, not a single hit, in New York City alone there are 6,432 K Solomon’s…go figure…and only one Penguin, a J, I assume Juan, living north of the 60th parallel, in Tierra del Fuego.) can change your habits. In fact, many bureaucrats in government desperately want to keep their neighbors in they dark about exactly what they do, especially if they work at IRS or are local tax assessors named Zacchias. I have long been a fan of exposure.

The Left has proved time and again, you can terrorize a person without breaking any law, once they know what frightens that person. The Nazis also proved it is not the tactic, so much as the end behind the tactic that is wrong. These tactics are tools, so like guns, they don’t scare or terrorize people, only people scare or terrorize people.

We all run the risk every day of the “lone gunman”-target of opportunity theory, as Obama once called (wrongly) Abdulmutallab, the Knicker Bomber, only usually it is a drunk at three o’clock in the afternoon, in his SUV, instead. The greater risk to us is the drunk.

But there is that heavier-than-air, pregnant “Go order”. We know they’re there. (They really are.) Still, we know in our hearts, even with what Beaglescout has told us, we have to wait to throw the second punch. John Wayne always did. But what we also have to know now is the Sean Connery Corollary to the John Wayne Rule, so often written here on RedState, that when they put one of yours in the hospital, you put one of theirs in the morgue. The veritas of that axiom is becoming more apparent with every every week.

But when it comes it will not come from those chattering children who make anonymous email threats or phone calls. They are paranoid and believe in right-wing death squads anyway, so it’s easy for them to believe we already know who they are (part of the chest-thumping in the mirror)…so if there ever is an outbreak, most will hunker down. As for myself, that is one delusion I don’t intend to spend a lot of time trying to talk them out of…I want them to think I know where they live.

We’ve spoken of this before, and will again, but the heat will rise very soon, this year for sure. In the end it is not for us to spend too much time trying to decide whether it is childish self-love, deep megalomania, or a deep bitter vengeful anger that has Barack Obama on this (I am now convinced, after Wednesday’s State of the Union and Friday’s showcase to House GOP members) path toward self-destruction. I must first take all necessary steps to insure that he does not take me, or even more importantly, the things I love and hold most dear down in flames with him. The book hasn’t been written, but Adolph Hitler destroyed many noble things in Germany is just 12 short years. Stalin literally destroyed the fixed beacons of morality in Russia within 30 years, the fallout of which we have yet to see. So yes, Obama & Co can destroy many things in a very short period of time.

For we all know behind Obama are men with cunning and guile, who may or may not be on the same page as he is, but who clearly do not have self-destruction in mind for themselves. Follow the money. Follow the power. So, even as it will seem to come from a single direction, we have to consider fighting a two or three-front war…while still holding onto out decency. Right now I don’t consider any single member of the Enemy to be Obama’s ally, yet must also consider them all to be…except Bill and Hil of course. They’re cavalry all right, only no one knows whose rescue they’ll come to. Or they may just be Comancheros.

Again, this is only a question for now. I expect it to be a little more difficult for Tea Partiers come spring and summer, in part because they’ve proven what they can do (Massachusetts) and also in part because the GOP hasn’t reached out to embrace them, leaving them naked on one flank (Remember your history, GOP, you know what happens when the bastard child suddenly is proven to be the rightful heir to the manor, and all lands appurtenant thereto…man in the iron mask and all that?). Last year we had a guy in a wheelchair beaten up. A finger bitten off. It will probably get worse.

I am not sure about the level of threat, but if you are a major blogger

kyle8 (Diary) Saturday, January 30th at 9:35AM EST (link)

meaning someone with a substantial audience, they you have to decide for yourself if you are going to allow yourself to be muzzeled by scare tactics.

In one sense, they left might get to you if you work in a capacity in which you might have to work alongside a lot of liberal people. They could make your live difficult.

As for threats of violence, That is mostly a bunch of crap. Lefties are notoriously panty waist, internet tough guys.

You have to make your own decision.

penguin2 (Diary) Saturday, January 30th at 10:24AM EST (link)

serious concerns that have been on my mind as well. First, I remember asking Erick Erickson last year at the RS Gathering, how he handled some of the hate mail he received. I think we had the gathering right after he posted one of the first venom spewed emails he had received, and in my naivety, I was shocked and voiced that to him. It was clear that this was a world I was unfamiliar with, and there have been times on RS when members have reminded Erick to be careful…

Since the Leftist Dems took over and if we do not stop them, even your registered party affiliation is something to think about.
More importantly, though, is my concern about what I do and how it can affect my children. One of whom just underwent a whole bunch of special clearances, and I am sure you know what I am talking about, I was scared (as only a mother might be) that somehow it would be revealed that his mother wrote on RedState. Only my friends know I write, and I am but a little cog in this wheel, so maybe it would not matter, but it certainly crossed my mind. I do not want to seem paranoid, but I have not seen one thing since this administration has taken power that makes me believe otherwise.

Like you, the SOTU and the address to Republicans on Friday, only reinforces to me that this is a man filled with hate towards the traditional American, and his cohorts and henchmen have an agenda. Your have written something that needed saying. I do want to add, I stand by my beliefs and love for my country. Being here at RS only strengthens me and I will not stop.

…one of the great sins of our recent past has been to behave as if it weren’t there…very Victorian England. One doesn’t have to dirty one’s hands, eyes, ears or mind to be aware of that. My mother used “Get thee behind me, Satan” as a way to turn down the alleyway and yield the highway to bad people.

We can’t do that anymore.

Actually, I don’t fear that hate-spewing bunch very much, i think the general consensus is they are cowards. But it only takes one…and they already can track down our ISP’s, etc, if they want to.

Massachusetts set a lot of things back, but I fully expected later this year, to see talk radio rolled back as well our unlimited speech rights here. That is still on their minds, only they may not have the votes in Congress any longer, and short of state of emergency, phony or real don’t think the President wants to stretch his executive rule making powers too thin.

He really is dialed in on self-destruct, I’m afraid.

We need him to self-destruct and fail. Rush knew....

If it gets even uglier for the Dems, and if a sizable faction within the Dems openly and strongly tries to repudiate the far left, then what you talk about may come true. Look for it in late 2010, or early 2011 if the elections get as ugly for the left as some of what I consider the optimistic scenarios suggest…

ACORN is the danger

Beaglescout (Diary) Saturday, January 30th at 11:31AM EST (link)

The whole of the left isn’t the main danger. The danger is from ACORN and its allies, such as the purple people beaters from the SEIU.

We need union allies against them. Is anyone working on a conservative union?

At some point there WILL be serious violence at a Tea Party or similar gathering. It will be in a Blue city and led by a union. The cops will stand idly by while the union goons thump on people and the media will make it the Tea Partier’s fault. The Democrat DA will then proceed to arrest the leaders and organizers. Take it to the bank.

I just hope and pray that the first serious violence doesn’t start on our side, though I realize any violence will be blamed on us. Nobody should go to these gatherings alone or without a camera or tape recorder. You should also make sure that you have a credit card with you that will cover at least a thousand bucks so you can make at least a $10K bail.

This LEO won’t stand by. We need others willing to carry their badges and weapons to these Tea Parties less than conspicuously.

I know a lot of people are already carrying concealed to these meetings, but I also know there are plenty of LEOs on our side and they need to do the same.

There are no "conservative" unions, in the main structure...

LaborUnionReport (Diary) Monday, February 1st at 2:06PM EST (link)

But there are conservative union members within the rank and file.

Although the Machinists’ Tom Buffenbarger is on the outside looking in, he is still anti-conservative. His lack of status is because he famously supported Clinton. http://www.redstate.com/laborunionreport/2010/01/28/machinists-union-president-buffenbarger-blasts-obamaagain/

Though, perhaps not “conservative,” SEIU picketers out for Brown was an example.

The higher up you go, the closer you get to the party apparatus.

Bottomline: Don’t look for a “conservative union”…but there are many union members who don’t march, jack booted, with their union bosses.

are now SOP on any job applicant. The federal government is vetting practically all job applicants for party affiliation and for jobs of any significance, even merit system jobs, applicants are being vetted with Democrat interest groups.

My wife wants to go to work for the federal government so she can get her 40 quarters of Social Security in (The State of Alaska doesn’t participate in SS.). She was informally offered a GS-12 job but told the offer had to be approved by DC. A couple weeks later the hiring manager sheepishly called her and mumbled a lot. Consequenlty, my wife has changed her voter registration to NP, but I suspect that her last name alone is enough to bar her from federal employment. There aren’t any private sector jobs here at her level and we don’t want to move – yet.

I was told point blank by some of my union “friends” back when I worked for the Republican-controlled legislature that they would see to it that I would never work again. I bravely responded that I wasn’t planning to work for anyone who would listen to them, but they pretty well made good on that threat for awhile. I lived off scraps thrown to me by the Legislature but even those scraps got front page stories. This is the game Democrats play. Unfortunately for conservatives and Republicans, Republican officeholders are afraid of these people and most of them are generally afraid of controversy and of any person who has been involved in controversy. I’ve done some seriously heavy lifting for Republicans but if I show up at some Republican grip ‘n grin, somebody will inevitably greet me with, “here comes trouble.”

willing to run for elective office everywhere. With the onset of the Tea Parties, and the pace at which they have grown, more candidates are coming out of the woodwork. The Mass. win has also helped with recruitment.

During the McDonnell election cycle, it was written that the last cycle had 30 some Republicans running to challenge the Dems here in VA. This election cycle had more than 70. It has long been known that in many areas, and for all kinds of elective positions, the Dems have very often run unchallenged. I hope that has changed all over the country. Somehow and some way, campaigns must turn the focus to the candidate and their record/positions, rather than who has the biggest war chest. Can you imagine how many good candidates are out there but, they have mortgage payments, car payments, a couple kids in college and etc. Now some City Council campaigns have turned into million dollar campaigns.

Another tactic by the cowards

Black River Wolf (Diary) Saturday, January 30th at 3:00PM EST (link)

Just another one of the tactics the cowards use.

John Hancock would have been more circumspect, I think, had he been signing a declaration against Tsar Ivan instead of George III. Gandhi would have been shot within a week had he been rising up against a Chinese Raj.

And Dr Martin Luther King may have been hung on a tall oak had it not been for the Republican Party. (Just thought I’d throw that in.)

Prop 8

jrnlz Saturday, January 30th at 4:15PM EST (link)

in CA showed the extent to which some will go to vilify those who don’t agree with their agenda. I was concerned for a friend whose name was on the donor list. She was not hassled and her husband was hired in the last year at a major entertainment industry company. However, her brother (who was also on the donor list) faced some recriminations in his business.

I have family who rely on governement contracts for their income. Unfortuantely, it does make me think twice about what lists I want my name to appear on. Part of counting the costs. It makes me sad to think our country has became a place like that.

This is where my thoughts went, too.

As for myself, I stick to an online alias, one that I’ve used for 20+ years now; I figure it doesn’t keep me completely safe but it does make it a bit harder for the random wacko to try to make trouble in my life.

There are other means than violence to terrorize...

furious (Diary) Sunday, January 31st at 3:33PM EST (link)

…the stalkers don’t necessarily have to resort to violence to ruin one’s life. They can “put you in the system”, triggering tax audits, inclusion on watch lists, stop-and-frisks by police, unannounced visits from Child Protective Services…all perfectly legal and defensible in when local governance is controlled by their party (see, “State of Ohio” and “Joe Wurzelbacher”).

If they’re more malicious, they can place fraudulent liens against one’s property (Posse Comitatus and Freemen specialized in this) or act as vexatious litigants (serial lawsuits filed against Sarah Palin). The liens, at least, would appear on one’s credit report and ruin any chances of getting a loan.

There are ways and ways of mounting reprisals. My advice, at least through the end of the Alinskyite Regime, to those at risk is to where at all possible live somewhere where the District Attorney and County Assessor are Republicans.

we discussed a few weeks ago on another thread. There are other ways of determinig your political leanings without necessarily having to deciper your screen/blogging name. And it’s not that difficult, as I’ve said before, for a professional to discover whether you are responsible for a certain blog or another. You’d be surprised how far a $50 bribe will get you into a list of ISP/URL’s and specific addresses.

And they will lie about you, deny you anything over which they have power (or erode its’ usefulness or enjoyability) and harrass you every chance they get. To them, the personal is political and everything else is therefore political as well. And they believe they have every right to do this stuff whether legal, moral, ethical or not.

I have long been and am now a victim of this strategy of low level guerrilla warfare which resembles a series of teen-aged hi-jinks, but which can become demoralizing after a while if one is not aware of them. They sounds trivial, but messed up food, the sudden discovery that your paperwork is missing or incomplete, that the person from whom you are seeking help doesn’t know anything about it, that the item you want is coincidentally “out of stock”, that the long-since made reservation is “lost” or any number of a thousand other slights begins to have an effect after awhile.

In the service I was ready to give all that was asked of me. I am still willing to give all, but I would like it to count for something. I believe a time willl come when everyone will be forced to make a choice anyway. That’s when severe consequences will become commonplace and the time for sacrifice will be at hand. As one commentator stated above, I only regret the harm it might do to my family.

Early in those halcyion days of the Tea Party in the spring ofn 2009 – when we were all making our first signs – and getting over the embarrassment of holding them high….a well placed friend in DC told me that the Tea Party movement was just emotion…..then. He also said that if it stayed just emotion it would run out of steam. If however, it turned that emotion into staying power, a sort of angst with legs, it would not burn out and it would be a force to contend with. In that case, my friend told me I had much to fear by being in the lead. I laughed. He repeated it and told me I had much to fear from Democrats AND Republicans and whoever was behind their march to power and seeming permanence. I asked him for clarity and he told me it would not be simple nasty blogs or tea bag name calling. It would be a show of force. He did not obviously know the direction or timing….but may the force be with us….not against us.

They won't come announced in the light of day...

…deception and prevarication are their stock in trade, every day. The fact that their ‘Great Victory’ in 2008 has left them impotent enrages these people. IP addresses may prove to be dangerous things.

You've been reading Solzhynitsyn.

The national threat level is low...

kowalski (Diary) Tuesday, February 2nd at 7:08PM EST (link)

Somewhere on the order of 1.5 or 2. However, all politics is local in the end, and the *local* threat level is higher. It doesn’t require someone from the Federal Government to make a mess of your life: it just takes someone on a mailing list in your municipal government who has an axe to grind.

Now having said that, I have to hope that nobody in any municipal or state government would take the bait and do it, regardless of their political proclivities. Eventually they’d be in hot water, and the truth would come out. It might take longer than you can survive, however.

I don’t like to think of the United States in these terms. I have to try to believe that regardless of how heated the political climate can be, that people who are elected officials will play by the rules, or at least try to.

In fact that’s a good lesson for everyone: “Play by The Rules.” In the end, it’s the only way to be respectable as a public servant or anyone who works for them.

A long time ago in a galaxy far, far away I decided that instead of using a cryptonym on this blog I would use my actual surname. I did that because, well, let’s be honest: Mike Krempasky did, so did Erick Erickson, and so did a bunch of other people who could. I don’f feel comfortable as a person walking around in dark sunglasses, whatever vulnerability that portends for me. Others are free to make a different choice, and some have, for reasons I find completely understandable. But I think that anonymity on the Web is something that is a crutch for the decrepit, first. There are some who have legitimate reasons for not talking about their real names, and I understand that even more pointedly now with a different Party in control of our government.

But the point is that I shouldn’t have to worry, regardless of which party is in power. My speech is Constitutionally protected. I make sure when I write that I understand where the boundaries are of that Constitutional protection and people shouldn’t be afraid of speaking here in the United States.

I don’t wear dark glasses and I’m not a catastrophist, so I will take it as it comes, I suppose. If America becomes a society where I can’t speak my mind openly within the law, with my real name, the rest of the world is just totally doomed.

And of course...

And of course, my advice for bloggers and responsible people in general from both parties is to understand and defend their 2nd Amendment rights while they’re exercising their 1st Amendment rights.

Which means, essentially to get yourself trained and licensed if you have to and understand how to protect yourself if the need arises. Do that for yourself and your family and then rest a little easier, among the tens of millions of other people who have done likewise, because they understand what the ultimate final arbiter of freedom is.

Here’s a hint: it’s not words per se, although those are invaluable. It’s words backed up by the ability to protect yourself without them if you have to.

This what we can "do with them"

This is just a wild idea, a shot over the bow, so to speak, but who knows what might come of it.
