(I’m Vassar Bushmills, and I endorse this message.)
South Boston, Friday PM-Saturday AM
This is Bernie Chumm and not Vassar Bushmills, so those of you who’ve already jumped him for talking out of school about Massachusetts politics, aim your fire at me.
I have a couple of friends in Corvallis who grew up in South Boston and long before Scott Brown was who he is today, I’d picked up some hints from them that things weren’t all that right with the Democratic Party here. I flew in Thursday and their families have been very nice to show me around, make me feel at home, and let me sit among their friends where friends gather, and just listen…then fill me on some details back at the house.
Right now I’m at an undisclosed location in the middle of Steve Lynch’s 9th congressional district, where adult beverages are served, scratching all this out on paper, like a deranged poet.
This is only a suggestion, Mr Brown, but you might consider giving over a part of your last day of campaigning to touching a few buttons at the Democratic party’s core. The Dems already are aware of the Republican base and the growing number of independents who may come over. I assume they have plans for them, in keeping with the fine traditions of Massachusetts politics.
So hit ‘em where they ain’t looking.
Without getting into specifics, I’ve talked to (actually listened to) a lot of people in this area the past two days. There’s a lot of pent-up anger with the Party. And most of that anger really can’t be laid at the feet of any particular issue like health care, although they’ve had enough of a taste of it with Romneycare to already have a bad taste. It’s something much deeper.
Yeah, sure, Teddy had one knee on the bishop’s altar and the other on a banana-peel, but being from the auld sod, they let that pass. But they’re not inclined to allow some spindly-legged apparatchik from North Adams tell the Catholics to get out of town, or at least the hospital ER, just to please her bosses back in Washington or Beacon Hill.
There’s a simmering anger beneath the surface which, Steve Lynch had better get a grasp of for his own political future, but which I believe also extends beyond South Boston. It’s that rank and file Democrats, by and large a moral, conservative bunch on house and family issues, are tired or being taken for granted, told what to do and being bullied. If John Kerry were running for office on Tuesday, he’d find tough sledding as well.
They really do seem to want to have power returned to them. If that means Scott Brown will only be a half-term wonder, so be it. They are Democrats, after all. But they are tired of being led around by the nose and kicked in the britches. They want to be free Democrats…again.
They want Teddy Kennedy’s seat to be their seat, the People’s Seat, once again. Of this I am certain.
It’s just a suggestion, Mr Brown, but you coined that phrase, and the sentiment hits home in the Democrat Party gut just as it does with the Tea Parties. I’d be looking for some way to find that raw nerve this last day. As Vassar likes to say, “Put your whole mind to it.”

"Dems want the People's Seat"
LisaDe (Diary) Saturday, January 16th at 12:20PM EST (link)I’m guessing thats why Vicki Kennedy stole those very words for an ad endorsing Coakley.

I can see how this ad ties in with everything you wrote here. The arrogance that the “common folk” are clueless and will be led like sheep.
I really like the #1 comment on the YouTube page...
mbecker908 (Diary) Saturday, January 16th at 1:20PM EST (link)“The People’s Seat”, who reminded you of that Vicki, Scott Brown…
Nice to hear from you Mr. Chumm.
penguin2 (Diary) Saturday, January 16th at 12:48PM EST (link)I remember when you had the introductory post and I thought you were Vassar or Vassar was you, not sure which now….but Vassar (and you) coming to RedState has been wonderful for us, IMO, and thank you.
I’ve been thinking on the people in Massachusetts, and now with your description, Dems and all, “by and large, a moral, conservative bunch”— that should make them traditional Americans, and if one is a traditional American, then one really wants to be independent vs dependent. Perhaps the people of Massachusetts are recognizing that they have been taken advantage of and indeed been played for suckers. Now is the time for them to throw off those chains of Democrat tyranny.
The race is not just about a good or bad candidate, although it is clear we have a good one and they don’t, but I believe it is about the people of that state reflecting, sensing and in turn seething, just as a volcano does before erupting.
If it can happen in Massachusetts, it can anywhere and everywhere in the rest of the country. This is the moment we have been waiting for; and as you and Vassar have been telling us, we have only to seize that moment.

Vassar Bushmills (Diary) Saturday, January 16th at 2:00PM EST (link)…Vassar here. He mentioned you on the phone this AM…that “Penguin Lady”
…he’ll see your note tonight, I suppose.
Two days left…I believe in miracles and maybe the Invisible Hand is moving here…my one prayer the past two years or so is that God’ll let us right the wrong we’ve done to ourselves without having to pawn it over to our grandchildren…
…so let’s hope Bernie’s right, and the Brown people capitalize on it. If they do, the exit polling will ignite the country.
Yi-Had!, as they say in Georgia.
There's pent up anger at the Democrats across the country...not just MA
AceInTX (Diary) Saturday, January 16th at 1:04PM EST (link)My dad is a hard core Union Democrat who is vocal..pushy and a general aXX when it comes to Politics and he discusses it incessantly even when you tell him you aren’t interested and try to change the subject he’ll just continue to hammer away with left wing talking point…
he’s oddly silent and subdued now…I think he knows they’re screwed…and I think he’s actually shell shocked at some of the craziness the Dems have jumped into since the 08 elections.
I don’t think anyone has a clue how large a tide is rolling in under the surface…I really believe when the Tsunami hits DC this Novemeber…it is going to so shock and awe the existing political establishment that 1994 will look like good Times for the Dems
Only this time…the wave isn’t just going to hit the Democrats…it’s going to overwhelm the so called objective press…and the liberal establishment of the Republican Party
One pent-up anger at a time....
Vassar Bushmills (Diary) Saturday, January 16th at 1:52PM EST (link)…for the next few days that’s all directed at MASS..
But you’re right. It’s not exactly the same way Reagan found his “Reagan democrats” but if Bernie’s right, and his instincts are usually good on taking community pulses. the sheer arrogance of those people are handing the working classes right back to us (not necessarily the GOP.)
By the end of the year the entire party could be reduced to a coalition of unions, teachers, government workers, lawyers’ wives and other reformed whores (as Moses used to call the coffee klatchers) and of course, their children living in the basement apartment.
If we pick them up with honesty and integrity and stand by our word and our bargains, we can keep them longer than RR did.
BTW: Vassar here, Bernie’s probably on his fifth Bloody Mary by now (we spoke this AM) when he filed his report. He told me South Boston is just like Caracas. Everyone recognizes a stranger, so he decided it best he just shut up and listen. The walls have ears in Dem country. It’s a shame anyone has to look over his shoulder anywhere in America (that ain’t selling drugs) but you know what I mean.
Yeah...when I lived in WV it was deep blue so I know what it is to keep your conservative opinnions to yourself...
AceInTX (Diary) Saturday, January 16th at 2:06PM EST (link)and only discuss them in whispers with those you knew to be conservative because simply sitting at a lunch counter openly discussing politics from a conservative perspective was an invitation for the union thug sitting at the other end of the counter to start spouting off Union platitudes and hateful rhetoric laced with the most vile and despicable foul language no matter how many women or young children were around.
Things were starting to settle a bit when I left there…and apperently it’s almost flipped from blue to deep purple…and may be leaning a little red now because the Dems overplayed the gun control issue in the 90s.
What's changed...(I've got a piece on this coming up)
Vassar Bushmills (Diary) Saturday, January 16th at 2:33PM EST (link)…is that the Dem’s are dumping all over the old “worker unions”. Card Check was supposed to be their sop. UMWA in WV gets screwed right alongside the coal companies. If anyone’s watching, Honda and Toyota benefited from the Chrysler -GM bailout, and cash-for-clunkers.
Putting unions on the GM/Chrysler boards only benfits union leadership…Trumpka, former UMWA is a girlie-man… The “guy” union leadership sold the members out just like AARP’s front office the old folks.
The Govt workers unions and Teachers Unions are what we’ve called “skirt union” (no disrespect, conservative ladies), with a few thugs at SEIU to pick up the goon-squad slack since the Guy unions are so short handed anymore.
Point is, Guy union leadership has been emasculated.
Why this is important is that the old guy unions, until Sweeny came along were unrepentant pro-Americans in “flag vs communism” issues. That’s why Reagan snared them up.
Skirt unions are notoriously socialist, even communist, and have been for years. They now call the shots. All the guy unions get are table scraps.
The daughter fits your skirt union member
redneck_hippie (Diary) Saturday, January 16th at 2:40PM EST (link)profile to a T. Any socialistic lie that comes down the pike is gospel, sadly. A mother’s work is never done. I suspect the son-in-law is a closet conservative, though. He took the granddaughter to the Quincy tea party last year, and I doubt it was because he just wanted to look at the Mississippi.
Beck has been making some good points now about how Unions are going international
AceInTX (Diary) Saturday, January 16th at 3:53PM EST (link)and getting behind Amnesty which has the effect of helping Jobs leave the country…and driving down blue collar wages…
Andy Stern of SEIU is on record bragging about how they are nationalizing Unions
don’t leave that out of your up coming piece.
Make that "Internationale" and you get my drift
Vassar Bushmills (Diary) Saturday, January 16th at 4:28PM EST (link)Cheers
Interesting point on Southie...
mbecker908 (Diary) Saturday, January 16th at 3:18PM EST (link)I lived in Boston in the ’70′s and quickly discovered it was not a “city”, it’s was a collection of small towns. Didn’t take me long to discover that if I walked down the street in Roxbury (black neighborhood) or Southie (Irish white) the “locals” looked at me exactly the same way. I was an outsider and was treated as such.
Somehow I suspect it hasn’t changed much.
I was stationed in Portsmouth NH in the late eighties...
AceInTX (Diary) Saturday, January 16th at 3:55PM EST (link)and my experience in Boston on the weekends was much the same.
No safe seats for Dems in 2010
paint_it_red (Diary) Saturday, January 16th at 2:10PM EST (link)If MA is competitive, and especially if we win on Tuesday, then there is no such thing as a safe Democrat seat in 2010. No Congressional District. Not CA, not WA, not WI, not HI, nowhere. Every seat is in play.
And I don’t buy the analysis of some pundits that the reign of Bush is still too fresh in voters’ minds, or that the GOP is failing to stand for something. The Democrats are the ones in charge. They are failing incredibly miserably. The GOP is not the party of no. Its the party of responsibility. Fiscal responsibility, social responsibilitiy, national defense responsibility. In other words, the exact opposite of the Democrat party who jump more quickly to “yes we can!” than “is this the responsible course for America?”
“It is not good to cultivate a respect so much for the law as for the right. The only obligation which I have a right to assume is to do at any time what I think is right.” Henry David Thoreau
“The means we use must be as pure as the ends we seek.” Martin Luther King Jr.
“If you want peace, work for Justice.” Pope John Paul II
I'll also add...Obama is like Carter in that he's teaching an entire generation to avoid the Democrats like the plague! nt
AceInTX (Diary) Saturday, January 16th at 2:16PM EST (link)Wonderful post, and let me just add my mite
joliefleurs Saturday, January 16th at 3:41PM EST (link)from the other coast…California is ripe for the picking, too.
Yes, we have a lot of radical Dems in LA and the Bay Area, but the stat is far more conservative than people realize. Perot got a lot of votes here, and is what gave Clinton the win; we’ve of course been Blue since, but it’s because most people have caved in from discouragement.
The Tea Party movement, Palin and now this race in Mass have got people ready to rumble…….not to mention the complete insanity that has been the Liberal agenda here for the past 20 years.
With all due respect to the candidate preferred here, who seems like a good person, I wish they had let Larry Elder run, but we have some excellent candidates.
Boxer could easily fall. Ma’am has the same Gift of Gaffe that Martha and Biden have. We’ll need help, but I’m sure we can take her down.
People are angry
proudgop (Diary) Saturday, January 16th at 3:51PM EST (link)but I do love that Brown has run an amazing race with a lot smiling in his commercials and optimism
things are bad now but America has brighter day in future
Yes, that's something to behold
Bedell Saturday, January 16th at 5:15PM EST (link)and like the Gipper. More doses of strong optimism that doesn’t roll over and show its belly to the attacks of the Dems would do Republicans candidates a world of good.
You'll see a lot of uplifted chins and set jaws...
Vassar Bushmills (Diary) Saturday, January 16th at 4:04PM EST (link)…in CA, (and elsewhere) if Brown wins…even if he comes close.
Bernie is watching close just to be able to lay out a general strategy..in part, hit them where they aren’t looking, make them defend territory they never thought they’d have to defend, find all the hot buttons on their base and push them…reduce the base by 5 points say…
Be resourceful and clever, throw out all the old playbooks, get so excited that you drool…
Be honest.
Yeah!
Steve Lynch Had To Quit The Senate Race Because He Was Too Honest and Conservative
Swamp_Yankee (Diary) Saturday, January 16th at 11:46PM EST (link)This is the best thing to ever happen to the FDR/JFK wing. The base threw Lynch overboard before the primary got started because he criticized ObamaCare for a variety of reasons, including cost. Plus, he’s pro-life. Capuano has the leg up n that wing, but its the moonbates that lost, not Lynch or Capuano.
