John Wayne, jarheads, and burning bras

Last night I got home just in time to watch “McLintock!”, one of my favorite John Wayne flicks that I haven’t seen in probably 20 years. I was glad to have watched it as there is about a 7 minute exchange of Americanism in the film – a rare find these days.

In McLintock, a bunch of farmers from the north and east are moving into cattle country with a hand-out of land (160 acres) from the federal government. McLintock tries to tell these homesteaders that you can’t farm the high desert.

One young man from Oklahoma, with a sister and mother to feed keeps trying to get a job as a cattle hand… has to practically beg because McLintock doesn’t want anything to do with these ignorant intrusive people who couldn’t possibly understand that staying and making a successful life on 160 acres of high desert means earning EVERY SINGLE bit of it.

When the young man thanks McLintock for “giving” him a job, here is where classic Americana John Wayne shows through.  It’s a beautiful speech and exchange.

In paraprashing:

Give.  Son, I didn’t “give” you anything.  Do you plan on working an honest hard day every day?

 Yes

You work a hard day for me and I’ll pay you a fair wage for that work.  That is how it works.  There is no “giving” here.

Now, I realize that most people under 30 have probably never even seen this or any other John Wayne flick.  Maybe that is where we have screwed up.

Fortunately, I had the classic “jarhead” for a grandfather. He was a Marine for 25 years who fought in WWII, Korea and Vietnam. He liked Bonzanza and John Wayne flicks so if you wanted to spend time with him, you didn’t talk during either. You were spoon-fed God, Country, Family. You had moral values because it was taught at home with a belt to your backside when you stepped out of line, it was seen on the screen with films and TV shows that didn’t morally degrade society, and you knew that cowboys weren’t always right, that the Indians should have won more than they did, and that just because the Yankees wore blue uniforms didn’t make them the good guys.

I realize that most everything out of Hollywood today is pure drivel. They either remake a classic with a new twist to fit modern social issues or come out with some film where you have to be compassionate about a modern social issue.

The way I see it – we need more John Wayne and less wallowing in our own sin then deciding it’s a “right”.  We need more men to stand up and be men, than trying to make them into sissies by treating our young men as girls.

  • It makes me sick to read about a teacher dressing up little boys as girls when she is teaching about fashion. What the heck is this 3rd grade teacher teaching? In 3rd grade, I think the focus should be on reading, writing, and arithmetic, not fashion and cross-dressing.
  • It makes me sick when I see that four young teenage boys are told to change their clothing and threatened with expulsion for wearing t-shirts with the American Flag on it to school because it may incite a riot among the Hispanic students. Cinco de Mayo is a Mexican holiday – not American holiday.  It would be like me going to France and expecting them to celebrate the 4th of July because I am there, I am American, and hello, it’s my holiday.
  • It makes me sick to see college students, good students who work hard and strive to do well, get expelled or threatened with expulsion due to their moral convictions. You have medical students who won’t get letters of recommendation because they believe in God. You have graduate counseling students who won’t affirm morally offensive behavior and are expelled or threatened. They are told they need “re-education” to be more tolerant of what they know to be wrong.
  • It makes me sick to have colleges and universities where you could burn your bra in the 60’s and riot about Vietnam in the early 70’s, but 40 years later you cannot speak against the liberal agenda. This happened in both Germany and Russia – if you wanted a college education, you had to support to governments policies.

You will either stand up for the kind of America where equality means you have the equal opportunity earned to succeed or fail – and if you fail, it’s allowed or you will stand up for socialism – a failed political ideology and its stripping away of America.

who as mothers teach it to the children and put it in their hearts so they never forget it. So please include (your, my, our) mother(s) on your excellent list gekster. Txgeekgirl, thanks for the article. That John Wayne in particular and the Cowboy western in general have disappeared from media, is not an accident, I believe it is intentional. Have you noticed, white hetero male American actors have just about disappeared in current Hollywood A list, very few of them now, the leading roles for even male American characters go often to Brits and Australians. (Even in popular “vampire” movies!) Again no accident. Hollywood Left hates the archtype white male who takes action for the right and for the oppressed, like a Gary Cooper or the Rifleman or Rawhide, etc. They taught children of previous generations subtle and important messages about who we were as Americans, and what was right and wrong, and that weapons were often wielded by good guys to do justice. That message had to be eliminated. Western TV shows must be driven off the TV lineup. They were. I think PhD dissertations could be written on the disappearance of the western from the American scene, & why it happened. When occasinally today a good script does escape Hollywood’s censors such as Lonesome Dove, the public ate it up they had never seen anything so wonderful and majestic, the American morality play writ large against a backdrop of the North American continent. Today’s generation doesn’t know what a cowboy is but they sure know what a gangsta or a mafiosi is, the movies have been informing them for 20 years now.

That's why we have Netflix :)

John Wayne should be the poster for 2010/12

Watached multiple John Waynes yesterday on AMC…excellent….especially McClintock!

Absolutely agree that John Wayne should go in the ranks of the greatest Americans of all time…he probably should top the list actually.

Good post,Txgeekgirl. The Left, through Hollywood, have...

penguin2 (Diary) Sunday, August 8th at 1:20PM EST (link)

helped diminish and almost destroy the American family. Their goal is to replace it with the State. Removing the father, and the strong male/authority image is crucial to their goal of moral relativism and takeover by the State. In the end, the only thing it will accomplish is to weaken society, and something will come in to fill the vacuum. They think it will be the State, but that will only be temporary. Once America succumbs culturally, there will be another culture to take its place, though IMO, it won’t be the Left on a permanent basis.

exactly what being an AMERICAN is all about. He was cute too in rough and tumble sort of way :)

We like our men to act like men....

txgeekgirl (Diary) Sunday, August 8th at 7:46PM EST (link)

That is why women love John Wayne – women want there men to act like men – to have character, moral values, and to be leaders. Our society finds these men – men who were heroes 40 years ago – are labeled with disdainment and the faggy, skinny jean, cross dressing girly men are idolized.

Like I was saying - you're right txgeekgirl-

cactusjack Sunday, August 8th at 7:57PM EST (link)

And there hasnt been a major media production decent Western, in either TV series or technicolor since and save for Lonesome Dove, that I can recall, where the themes are even larger than the characters, and the characters are fundamentally decent. Oh there have been western- theme movies out of Hollywood in the last 10 years or so, but they all portray the cowboys – the men – as sociopaths – troubled, cruel killers or immature punks at best. If you’re a teen in Seattle who wandered into the wrong cineplex theater seeing a cowboy for the first time in one of these sad wastes of effort, you’re ready to go back to MTV and 16 and Pregnant for your aspirational inspiration in life.

Modern women maybe like the idea of a John Wayne.

Achance (Diary) Sunday, August 8th at 7:59PM EST (link)

A little tumble to see if he can look down longer than they can look up and can curl their toes would be OK; something to tell the bffs about, but they ain’t going to put up with him acting like that as the man in their life. That sensitive new-age guy, the urban castrati, is the only man most women are willing to have around them, and especially to have around children. John Wayne would be doing life for child abuse if he were around today. He’d have a restraining order against him because he made her afraid when he got pissed off over something stupid she, or, especially, one of her kids did.

You women talk about big, stong, broad-shouldered, tough-talking and acting guys, and you might be willing to take a little romp with one, but you aren’t going to let him be like that and slip between your sheets for long. Modern women really like those almost queer guys who’ll watch the cooking channels with them.

I am single because I can’t find a man less sympathetic than I. I don’t want one that watches Hallmark or Lifetime… I don’t want one that dresses like a fashion mag, and if he got his hands dirty might cry.

The breed of man I was raised to respect just aren’t made much anymore.

Some are loved and appreciated and respected. I agree that too many women have bought into the feminist lie that they need to be able to say ‘jump’ and their man should ‘jump’. I’m grateful to have married a man who will jump up in the middle of the night, grab a gun, and inspect the house thoroughly when I hear a noise. I know he would rip a man to shreds bare-handed if he had to to protect his family, even if he won’t always pick up his dirty clothes and his idea of doing the dishes doesn’t come close to mine (and doesn’t happen very often either!). Good thing he believes in working and that I should be home for the kids. It works, and I have a little time to spare for RS.

However, I would say one fortunate outcome in the change of our society is the involvement of men in our families. At least where I live, dads are just as involved around the house and with the kids as the moms. This, I am thankful for!

Loved the diary – I’m going to have to sit down and watch a JW movie – it’s been almost 30 years since my last viewing – didn’t much appreciate it then!

The 1990′s was the first decade of really whiny male singers. The 1980′s was filled with alpha male lead singers, even though many lacked talent. Once grunge made it big, it seems like sensitive whiny songs became the thing.

My rules of the road for primary season.
Rule #1: Vote for YOUR first choice in the primaries
Rule #2: Vote for the R in the general.
Rule #3: Don’t let anyone convince you to violate Rule #1 or Rule #2
Rule #4: When in a center-right argument, reaffirm Rules #1-#3–it will help us all to get along better.
Rule #5: If you are using the language of the left, you probably aren’t furthering conservativism
Rule #6: The priority is issues first, candidates second, and supporters third. Nobody is bigger than the issues. Conversely, if you spend your time focusing on supporters, you are wasting everyone’s time.

I’m happy to say that this girl wants a manly man! Morals, masculinity, and muscles. The husband is to be the head of the home, so darn it, I want a guy with some leadership potential. I just ran an evaluation on all the men, fictional and not, that I admire. Not a one of them is girly.

I once told my sister that there’s a difference between being male and being a man. I feel that that’s very true. I also once said that I’d never marry a soldier because I didn’t want to worry about him going off and dying in a foreign country. I’ve changed my mind. If the guy I’m destined to marry turns out to be a soldier, I will not care. That would just make him even more awesome in my opinion!

“*They* say the best weapon is one you never have to fire. I respectfully disagree. I *prefer* the weapon you only have to fire *once*. That’s how Dad did it; that’s how America does it… and it’s worked out pretty well so far.”

Keep in mind that you have to be tough,

4life (Diary) Monday, August 9th at 7:53PM EST (link)

Stephaniet, to live with a manly man. Feminists say the opposite, that a woman married to a ‘he man’ type is a doormat. Not true. You have to be tough as nails to put up with the blunt truth dished out and the demands of a real man. And, not only put up with it, but earn his respect and civilize him as much as you can, as only a real woman can. Whining and nagging don’t work. You have to be sharp tounged at the right time, and not back down on things that are fundamentally important to you. A real man respects a good fight and will concede a point fairly won. It isn’t for the feint of heart, trust me. But the rewards are legion.

And for Stephaniet, may I humbly recommend,

Uma Richie (Diary) Tuesday, August 10th at 10:45PM EST (link)

1. Stay off the pill. I’m not sure what the mechanism is, but ovulation either attracts real men or kick starts masculinity in the men around you. In marriage, ovulation puts a serious twinkle in your spouse’s eye and makes him adorably protective.

2. Help your husband reach his full potential. Support and respect his career. Assure him of your high expectations for his duties as the head of the household. Let him know you have faith in him. Don’t let him lose faith in God.

3. If you are blessed with the ability, have more children than you thought you wanted. This is just my personal experience, but Single Guy Hubby was so terrified of having more than two kids that when he survived becoming Father of Three Hubby, he felt like he had conquered the world. (Becoming parents of four transformed us both, but that is a topic for another day.)

This advice comes from someone who has been married only ten years, but I can honestly say that I am the luckiest wife in the world. May God bless you in your discernment.

In rememberence to a great man, a quote.

I wish you had gone further with that dialogue because there was something more to that Americanism that McClintock was handing down. When the young fellow mentioned wealth and how McClintock was the boss, to which the boss replied, “Everybody works for somebody. You work for me but I work for all those butchers who put the meat on the tables.”

From the richest to the poorest, everybody works for somebody and that’s what the free markets are all about. If the so called boss makes decisions that give his business a bad name, well, he gets less work doesn’t he? And so on, down the line.

We have a president setting the example of little work with big pay and what little work he does has resulted in failures across the board.
