You guys are making my teeth hurt over there

Six blind men describing an elephant… each right in their own way… each missing The Big Picture.
For the Democrats sitting where we are now in early 2005, The Big Picture was to win. In 2005 Obama was still a skinny little kid that gave one good speech. They didn’t know him, he didn’t know them. This election was not the product of Obama… Obama was the product… slipped into a pre-formed program. The system was in place it could have been Obama, or Hillary, or Sham-WOW! It didn’t matter much… oh, change the color and typeface and we’re on our way.
So to win, they developed, and brought together these 5 items:
Money
Message
Organization
Technology
Candidates
None of these would have worked nearly as well as they all did together. To use military terms a Combined Arms approach… whereas:
Combined arms is an approach to warfare which seeks to integrate different arms of a military to achieve mutually complementary effects.
Now of those 5, how many did the GOP have right in 2008? Yup… none.
Taken on their own, each is important… but not as important as the whole.
I do not propose to have all the answers to all these things. But I’ll make some observations on each.
Money – Where is our George Soros? While one might wonder just how many of those pre-paid Visa cards came from him his roll was much more important… seed money. We need one or two… no more than three guys to step up and but in 10, 20 million worth of seed money to get some of this (all the rest) off the ground. Sean, Rush, I’m looking at you! We, the right, have made you successful beyond your wildest dreams… time to put something back.
Message – Freedom, rights, and small government. Remember KISS… ‘keep it simple, stupid.’ “We” need to settle this with the Country Club moderates before we can move on as it were.
Organization – The left has the wingnuts, ACORN and the unions. Why can’t we have every Evangelical Congregation in the country?I’m willing to bet real money that there are vastly more Evangelicals than there are wingnuts, ACORN and the unions.
Technology – truly important… but not as important as having people that WANT TO USE IT! A truly crappy site like Craig’s List draws people to it… because they want to be there. It works… but only works for those that have a need of it. Find a job, sell a car, meet a hooker… when you want it it’s there… it works but it’s butt ugly. A well crafted site with all the graphic bells and whistles isn’t going to do much it people have no reason to visit. The point: give them some reason to go to it and they will… not the other way around.
Candidates – The GOP has had a really tough time recruiting… with the state of everything else is this any surprise? Get the money to get things going, get the message on track, start building the organization, use the Technology to tie it all together, and good, young, articulate candidates will start getting on board.
Combined Arms – each working with the other…
I know this is the broadest of broad outlines and that I raised many more questions than I answered… but each of these must be built, each question answered, and THEN the Technology built for the battlefield.

And, IMO, until we nail the message none of the rest matter. The Republican Party’s only message since 1988 has been “We aren’t THEM.” and that doesn’t work. It worked for GWB because of Clinton fatigue, but he never offered a “message” either, “compassionate conservatism” was – by design I think – a batch of mush that people could mold into whatever they wanted to. In practice it tried to be something for everybody and it failed miserably.
I come back to the point I’ve made over and over, moderates are welcome here, just not in leadership and not in any position that defines the agenda.
Seen, But Not Heard
Matthew (Diary) Thursday, December 25th at 11:17PM EST (link)By this do we mean moderates should be seen, but not heard? Maybe not even seen, just voting with people who disagree with them — but disagree with them less than the other guy?
It means, very simply, that you folks have
mbecker908 (Diary) Thursday, December 25th at 11:44PM EST (link)had a run at leading the party since 1988. Newt popped in for a brief period of Renaissance in ’94 but Christie Todd Whitman and the RMSP colluded with Dems to kill any possibility of conservative gains from the CWA.
Bush1, Dole, Bush2, McCain. Most of the Senate leadership that blocked any chance of conservative gains, moderates in House leadership. You’ve had your run. You’ve failed miserably. People are tired of candidates and a party that doesn’t stand for anything, and that’s the singular point of moderates, you stand for nothing. You will reach across the aisle and be pulled into the scum pond every time rather than stand for anything that even remotely resembles a principle.
So yeah, you’ll get an invitation to the victory parties when conservatives make the party stand for conservative, small government, personal responsibility principles again. But bring your own booze.
Bottom line, you haven’t earned the right to sit in the room let alone at the table.
I never got the whole "put the moderates in leadership" thing
aesthete (Diary) Friday, December 26th at 8:28PM EST (link)Isn’t moderate-ism relative to where the 2 “extreme” parties are at?
And I haven’t heard many say that moderates shouldn’t have any role in the party (I favor moderates in legislative roles, personally), but the party and its candidates for leadership should stand for something – anything – aside from “bipartisanship” and “reaching across the aisle”. After all, if a candidate doesn’t have set policies or an underlying and consistent political philosophy, he’s stuck with selling himself, and honestly, the right isn’t so good at personality politics.
The act of defending any of the cardinal virtues has today all the exhilaration of a vice – G.K. Chesterton
I too have wondered where are the money men?
JadedByPolitics (Diary) Thursday, December 25th at 7:16PM EST (link)If Republicans are supposed to be the party of the rich where in the hell were they during this election? We need a couple of sugar daddies to make this work and I cannot for the life of me think of any by name and while Sean and Rush have money they are hardly the billionaire that Soro’s is! If someone can think of a person we can deluge them with requests to get on the ball and we will support them on the ground with mailing etc. But the money is the #1 thing we have to get. Technology is second and I think we are getting there we just need to get them under one umbrella…..we are too scattered, lots of good people lots of good sites but again too scattered!
We know politicians have some money and if they want to be in the majority again they will have to pony up as well! We are either in it to win it or they will be satisfied with the minority….sometimes it is hard to tell with those guy!
Unified Patriots – How-To:
Activists Taking Action
Combined Arms - Indeed
jwebb (Diary) Friday, December 26th at 9:08AM EST (link)tsquare, I believe you have summed up the road map quite succinctly. We must address these points at all levels of the party, from local to national. IMHO, item #2 should be the easiest since the Conservative message has been and will always be clear. What is missing on the Message is getting some of our party members to adhere to the message. But I digress…
I have been working with my local party to improve our technology approach to the community. The more I pondered it, the more I realized that our problem was more than just a crappy website, it was and still is a low-power approach to community education and outreach. So as I think about the mission of our local web presence, I am trying to design it in such a way as to becoming a de facto source of political information in our community as well as a recruiting site. I am also encouraging our local party to do more outreach programs that rely solely on face-to-face meetings; things that the community can attend to hear our Message.
So, indeed, I agree… while tech is important, it is only a tool to help facilitate the strategy.
