Behavioral modification. It is a wonderful tool to change the attitude and performance of animals, children, and even troublesome adults. Modification comes in many different forms. For example, you can spray a dog which is misbehaving with water to correct its bad habits. Children can be grounded. Over at Gatewaypundit, they had a long running debate on the merits of tying a a man to a flag pole as a lesson about how burning the American flag is a bad thing. Regardless of your opinion, I can guarantee, being duct taped to a pole with a sign around your neck telling everyone what you did will modify your behavior, far better than a mist of water to the face!

So, how do we correct the person who called the father? Hmmm…. Well, first let us have the Military CID do the work and find the person responsible for the call. Get their name, address and photo. Then meet with the father of that soldier, or maybe have that soldier sent back to the U.S. for a R&R and give the information to both of them.

Then close the file, step back and see what happens. I am almost one hundred percent sure serious behavioral modification will take place. It may resemble a scene from the SAW series, but I’ll guarantee when finished, the person who made that call will have a severe and adverse reaction to every touching a phone again! In fact, I’ll be willing to bet, before the doctors could perform surgery, that person would be able to pass gas and dial numbers at the same time… if you know what I mean.

Sometimes slapping people with fines, or publicly exposing them to humiliation isn’t enough (you must possess a conscience to be humiliated. The act alone proves that person doesn’t.) There are lines that get crossed that laws cannot handle. No fine will ever replace or repair that moment of abject horror the father felt.

Veteran cops get that. If the guy was found at the bottom of a ravine below a bridge and I worked the case, it would go something like this:
“Hey, isn’t that the guy who makes phone calls to parents of soldiers saying they were dead?”

If the in person notification happens to your family you should be prepared to call the MPs (or police if not on base) and have them stop by your home to “check the credentials” of the “notifiers” for safety reasons. It should be step number one if notified in person unless you personally know the notifier (such as a real Chaplain who would be one of the people sent etc).

Where is the evidence that these prank calls are politically motivated? People have been known to make malicious phone calls for reasons that have nothing to do with politics.
