It would’ve been tied up n courts ’till the leases expired.
Guess gas has to be $4 a gallon again for anybody to get riled enough to shout the ecoidiots down.

It can be offset by a $1 tax on every gallon of gasoline or other oil-based products that gets paid to states like Texas and Louisiana to be used for coastal protection efforts.

Same thing with Massachusetts and various others – you don’t want drilling or refining in your state, fine. Heating oil and gasoline prices rise by $1 per gallon.

That vote on that portion of the budget deal was instructive – if that doesn’t pass *now*, it’s unlikely to pass unless there are a lot more Republicans in the CA State Assembly.

I think the CA GOP can publicize that one if they think it’ll do some good down the road.

But pushing for in in the Assembly right now is a waste of time and effort.

They need to publicize far and wide that Steinberg (DEMOCRAT) immediately took off for vacation *before* the budget deal was totally done.

That will *not* look good, right now, to the people of CA.

CA GOP needs to be all over local news on this – send local polls home just to knock on the doors of the local news stations to get this message out.

You’re probably right about the new drilling being caught up in the courts. It’s actually expansion of an existing drilling operation, however it’s off the coast of Santa Barbra, and there is some history with Oil spills there.

I’m all for more oil drilling off the coast of CA and Fla, if it can be done safely with high safety margins to protect the environment.

Weird factoid, there are plenty of oil spill events off SB today, except they are natural occurring fractures of the sea bed releasing crude.

If they are counting on 1.8B or whatever it is coming from that platform, they are dreaming. It will get tied up in court by the enviros forever.
