Gitmo solved

Promoted from the diaries by bs

“How did our prison system become so cruel?” pfft!

Defense Secretary Robert “William” Gates was interviewed on NBC’s “Toady” “Today” show Friday May 22 where he called the Gitmo lockup “probably one of the finest prisons in the world today.”

Got that right.

Personally I’ve been hearing the liberal argument that to “bring the detainees to US soil would pose no problem” as Super Max prisons here have never had an escape.

Really? Has a thought or idea never escaped these detention facilities? Can radical Islamic detainees be seperated from the other dangerous inmates, legally or physically? Or would the radical infection be more likely spread to other inmates as happened recently in New York?

There is only one Supermax prison in the United States federal system, ADX Florence in Florence, Colorado.

The prison opened in 1994 with the aim of incarcerating its inmates in solitary confinement for most of the day and keeping them in extreme conditions. The result is debilitating, say security officials, leading former prisoners to describe it as a living tomb.

Most of the prisoners are held in solitary confinement for 23 hours every day. For one hour each day they are allowed to exercise in a concrete chamber, fettered by leg irons and handcuffs. Prisoners stay in sound-proofed cells measuring seven feet by twelve. Each cell is bolted shut with a steel door.

Stark cells are lit by neon lighting and contain a bed, desk and stool. A shaft of natural light filters through a narrow slit window.

US security experts describe a highly-controlled environment designed to cut the prisoner off from the outside world and one another.

“They are in a security envelope, a security bubble. Their environment is sterile, they are isolated from the outside world and from the prison world,” said James Aitken, a former US federal prison official.

“Moussaoui doesn’t know yet, but under such conditions as time goes by, they rot.”

Sounds like a better system than Guantanamo Bay where prisoners freely mix with one another, worship together, play soccer, conspire and share information?

Here’s where it gets dicey;

The psychological effect of long-term solitary confinement is profound, leading to prisoners suffering from hallucinations, anxiety, depression and self-harm. One former prisoner David Clark told The Guardian in 2002 of extreme restraint methods used by the prison, even during family visits.

“Your family has to look at you chained up like Hannibal Lecter or something. They have to look at you in pain, squirming,” he said.

Human Rights Watch has described the conditions at such prisons as being a violation of international laws on civil and political rights as well as torture conventions.

Olympic bomber Eric Rudolph laments in a series of letters to a newspaper that the maximum-security federal prison where he is spending the rest of his life is designed to drive him insane. “It is a closed-off world designed to isolate inmates from social and environmental stimuli, with the ultimate purpose of causing mental illness and chronic physical conditions such as diabetes, heart disease and arthritis,” he wrote in one letter to The Gazette of Colorado Springs.”

One group calls US Supermax “Torture in Our Own Backyards

Wading through the lengthy article referenced above is the pertinent part, with italics added by me;

Prison activists across the country are working to shed light on this. Enlisting the support of lawmakers and lawyers who share their concern over the treatment of supermax prisoners — and the rationale behind it — they are fighting for legal precedents that would bring more services to supermax prisons, grant prisoners more mobility and opportunity and, ultimately, shut the facilities down. The Tamms Year Ten Campaign is one such coalition; it recently persuaded the Illinois House of Representatives to hold a hearing, scheduled for April 28, to consider arguments for and against the effectiveness and legality of Tamms.

As I mentioned above the liberal argument is “nobody has ever escaped Supermax”.

How long after Gitmo detainees arrive at ADX Florence will it take the left to switch targets from Cuba to Colorado in an effort to have the combatants released? And released to where? Back to that old argument again.

Groups like Human Rights Watch are working tirelessly to end Supermax detention, and with all the negative changes I’ve seen lately I have no doubt someone somewhere will take up their cause, and all our arguments against moving the detainees and closing Gitmo will have been proved correct.

Back to Bill Robert Gates, he also said on the Today show (again emphasis mine);

Defense Secretary Robert Gates says the Obama administration had no choice but to order the shutdown of the prison at Guantanamo because “the name itself is a condemnation” of U.S. anti-terrorism strategy.

OK, I have the solution; rename the Guantanamo facility “The George W. Bush Overseas Contingency Holding and Daycare Facility”. The left (Obama included) should be thrilled they can continue to tag Bush with the “crime” of the dention.

Conservatives will hold it up as a tribute (albeit silently, we don’t want to spoil it) to the former Bush Administration’s wisdom in keeping terrorists off US soil, and the terrorists themselves wil continue to enjoy soccer, FrootLoops and a fresh weekly Koran delivered to their cells.

I’ll start painting the signs.

I tell you this those murderers will be begging to go back to Gitmo....

JadedByPolitics (Diary) Friday, May 22nd at 5:58PM EST (link)

when they get their butts in a Supermax why it will be like home when they get to a REAL prison….they have a very soft way of living in Gitmo…heh! Watch what you wish for freaks!

The only soccer they'll play at ADX

Erick Brockway (Diary) Friday, May 22nd at 6:01PM EST (link)

will be the games they play with their imaginary friends Mohammed, Muhammad, and the other guy…what’s his name?

I didn't see. . .

. . .any allowance for prayer time in the ADX schedule. The ACLU won’t have any of that.

And I guess that the Arab street will be just fine and dandy with 23 hours of solitary for their buds.

As to Eric Rudolph–guess you should have thought about all this before you set off those bombs. Oh, well.

The tree of liberty must be refreshed with the tears of defeated politicians of BOTH parties and at ALL levels over the next few election cycles.

they can see Allah, Mohammad, and Osama all day every day. Facing east may be a problem though with the cell spinning constantly.
Am I being unduly harsh?
Sorry (not) they killed my friends.
Yeah, Eric Rudolph is yet another case of spelling one’s first name all wrong.
It’s ERICK, or you end up in supermax.

Good info in here, Erick.

I did not realize there was only one Supermax in the US. Good comparison between the conditions in there with Gitmo. I’m sure the Supermax prisoners wish they were at Club Gitmo, and certainly not vice-versa.

2 things: another Obama FAIL + Bi-Partisanship was AGAIN Democrats joining with REPUBLICANS

JLenardDetroit (Diary) Saturday, May 23rd at 12:12AM EST (link)

yet again How Obama’s FAILURES are the country’s SUCCESSES – since we have to spell it out is splashing across the FP, of course the MSM will SPIN IT differently, but another Obama FAIL is a US success…..

BI-PARTISANSHIP for the, lost track number of times now (again, Bi-Partisanship has really been Democrats joining with Republicans and touched on also here) with the REAL Bi-Partisanship, this time. is Dem’s (all but 6 of them) joining with ALL Republicans to BLOCK the funds to close GITMO.

Don’t tell us the OBAMA FAIL message ain’t gonna work!!!!!

Until reading this piece I was against shutting down Gitmo and bringing the terrorists into this country.

But the description of the living hell that is the Super Max prison is compelling. Turning these terrorists into mindless, babbling piles of mush is the only reasonable argument I have yet heard for bringing them here.

I was thinking the same. -nt-

Scary thought though (Yeah but, yeah but...)

Erick Brockway (Diary) Saturday, May 23rd at 2:06PM EST (link)

ADX Florence is at max capacity and would have to be expanded. With Obama drawing the blueprints I’d look to see such horrors as a spa, soccer fields, a suspicious dome-shaped building with loudspeakers on the roof blasting strange Arabic chants every few hours, and other things like this to make life “unbearable” for the inmates.
Likely the current crop of inmates would be so happy for the change (or ANY change) they may well convert to Islam in gratitude.
I shudder to think of Holder and Obama running our federal prison system and how the unicorn and rainbows will affect that.
Now throw actual battlefield hardened terrorists into the cauldron. Instead of the inept bumbling wannabe radical Islamic terrorists we may start seeing a better crop released to the streets soon.
I look for Gitmo to stay open. Obama’s finding being candidate and throwing rocks was way more fun than having the rocks thrown AT him.
I see Bush being vindicated WAY above schedule.

Super max prisons ok for US prisoners

Gitmo, incomparably superior, a horror for America’s enemies. Ah, the ways and working of the liberal mind.
I still can’t figure out why if security is the issue the islamists aren’t kept at Gitmo, recently given a clean bill of health by Holder. Though once in the US the reach of the federal court system is unhappily extended, a probable goal of The O before he bankrupts and destroys America.

Security inside the prison ...

Presents enough problems, but have our leftist friends considered that in the US the guards’ families and communities become targets for terrorist “retaliation” strikes and hostage taking? A little harder to do when you need to do your conspiring and plotting on Fidel’s turf.

Under the Obama adninistration we no longer call it the war on terror, it’s now “An Overseas Continguency”. Let’s be cute in the eyes of the World and rename Gitmo something clever like “Jihadaday Inn”! And we’ll leave the lights on for ya! Opps wrong chain.

personally, I prefer "Club Gitmo"

From one of the links in your diary: “With no religious or educational programs to break up the time or elevate your thoughts, it’s a daily struggle to keep your mind from unraveling.”

I can’t picture Obama eliminating prayer rugs, foot washings, Korans, indicators which direction Mecca is, and so on.
