67% believe Illegal Immigrants Major Strain – Ras

Not that there was need for validation, but its good to print these things out and have ‘em handy when going door to door or writing newspapers.

Rasmussen reports asked the question “Are illegal immigrants a significant strain on the U.S. budget?”
67% responded yes, 23% no, and 9% not sure.

Another survey question asked ” Does the availability of government money and services draw illegal immigrants to the United States?”
Again two thirds respond yes. 66% Yes, 19% No, 15% Not sure

O.K., so how do we deal with the strain? Rasmussen asked:

“When it comes to immigration reform, which is more important… gaining control of the border or legalizing the status of undocumented workers already living in the United States?”

Should we be a) Gaining control of the border- 68 percent voted for this one; or b) Legalizing the status of undocumented workers already living in the United States – 26 percentthought this was the way to go. And 6 percent had a tough time with this one so were ‘not sure’.

Rasmussen also breaks it down how the question fell on party lines and asked questions about how soon legislators might tackle the issue.

we need to strengthen the border

but more importantly strengthen enforcement. Let’s face it, the border is huge, and there is no way the government can stop illegals from coming in any more than they can stop drugs from coming in.

We need to decide as a nation whether we require legal immigration or not. It seems to me that most Democrats and Republicans have no desire to ask this question or to hear the answer.

George W Bush had no interest in confronting illegal immigration or hyper-immigration. He thought he had a “special relationship” with Mexico, not Great Britain. He did learn fast that he was wrong, but he had no answers.

We are a nation of immigrants that is true. But we WERE also a nation of 4th, 5th, and 6th generation immigrants that wanted nothing more to be just Americans. Now we have politicians that are afraid to even discuss the issue. They don’t even want to engage the American public, we are basically out of the equation.

I have been consistent on immigration. We need to make immigration a privilege. We need to allow those that help our nation come in and we need to be equitable about it. There is no sound reason why Mexico should have more immigrants than England. And if they do, it should be because more Mexicans want to be part of America.

The biggest story about immigration is not the border policing, nor internal enforcement. The biggest story is that our nation has had no dialogue on the issue at all, and from what I can tell it never will.

Great Post Jaded

I remember way back in 1993 or 1994 visiting Arizona for the first time to see me dad. At that point, I didn’t follow politics at all. However, I remember him talking to me about the problems Arizona and California were having with illegal immigration and how women would purposely cross the border into the US just to have babies so they would receive benefits from the US as American citizens. He explained to me that these women didn’t pay for these services as the hospitals were obligated by law to provide for these women and their babies.

I knew this couldn’t work forever for America. And I truly believe that is why California is in so much trouble financially (and for many other reasons as well). I now live in Texas and I know the amount we pay to school illegal immigrants, as well for their other services.

Oh, and let’s give them mortgages, too, that they cannot pay back.

It’s been a recipe for disaster and will remain so unless something changes.

heh...
