Here We Go. Jerry Nadler Says Trump Can Be Impeached Over Hush Payments

It Doesn’t Work Like This

You knew this was coming even though the pre-election, now soon-to-be a majority in the House of Representatives, Democrats, said it was not.

On Jake Tapper’s gab fest Sunday, “State of the Union” Jerry Nadler, the expected incoming chairman of the House Judiciary Committee, had this nugget of post-electoral wisdom.

According to CNN

New York Democratic Rep. Jerry Nadler said Sunday that if President Donald Trump is found to have violated campaign finance laws with hush payments, it “might very well be an impeachable offense.”

“Well, it may be an impeachable offense if it goes to the question of the President procuring his office through corrupt means,” Nadler, the expected incoming chairman of the House Judiciary Committee, told CNN’s Jake Tapper on “State of the Union.” “And that could be impeachable.”

“You’d have to see … how good the proof of that is, and secondly, what else there is, because the fact that an impeachable offense is committed, has been committed, does not mean necessarily there ought to be an impeachment.”

Nadler said it “depends on whether the situation is serious enough that it makes sense to do an impeachment to defend the … system of government and the system of democracy.”

Good ole Jerry just could not wait to take over the Judiciary Committee before he let this loose. So let’s take a look at what the Consitution says about this. You know the document that Jerry has sworn to uphold and defend.

Under the United States Constitution, in Article II Section 4, the founders laid out what the criteria were to bounce a President or Vice President from office.

“The President, Vice President and all civil Officers of the United States, shall be removed from Office on Impeachment for, and Conviction of, Treason, Bribery, or other high Crimes and Misdemeanors”

So if I’m following Rep. Nadler’s logic here the President, before he was President, paid some ladies who said he had sex with them to please not mention it during the campaign. This would be the “hush money” and, if proven that he knew it was done, might be a violation of a campaign finance law.

Possibly. The Democrats really hope.

Does that rise to the level of High Crimes & Misdemeanors?

I was pretty sure if the Trump campaign was colluding with the Russians pre-election that would qualify but, being the Mueller probe seems to be short on that front, I guess we have to go with paying the ladies to be quiet before the election to sink this POTUS.

Also, the branch that Nadler serves in, Congress, has paid out over 17 million dollars in over 264 cases to keep federal employees “hushed” according to a Washington Post article last year. Over the past 20 years, Congress has paid $17.2 million in settlements.

Maybe I’m biased, being I did not vote for President Trump, but I think this is really kinda weak. I could be wrong though.

Possibly, the angle is that the campaign finance violation is just so egregious, Donald Trump just can’t pay the fine and move along like…Barrack Obama did.

If you recall the 2008 Hope & Change campaign was fined big time for doing some bad things according to Politico

President Barack Obama’s 2008 campaign was fined $375,000 by the Federal Election Commission for campaign reporting violations — one of the largest fees ever levied against a presidential campaign, POLITICO has learned.

When this came to light President Obama was into his second term, the GOP held both the House and the Senate and I don’t recall anyone saying he needed to be impeached. Now I’m sure there are lots of people that are going to yell “ IT’S NOT THE SAME TYPE OF VIOLATION” and I’m sure that argument can be made.

Yet does what Trump did rise to High Crimes and Misdemeanors?

Take your time thinking how to answer that while you contemplate getting 67 votes to convict in the United States Senate, Jerry.

I can’t wait to watch Chief Justice Roberts doing eye rolls presiding over the trial.
