Palin, Social Media, and the Blueprint

That I am a fan of Sarah Palin is not, I think, a secret.  That I did absolutely nothing for the 2008 election until McCain named Palin as his running mate is true.  That I regard Sarah Palin as the future of the Republican Party, and absolutely the most astonishing politician I have seen since Ronald Reagan, may be sign of bias and foolishness on my part… but it is nonetheless true.

Because I think Sarah Palin is the most gifted politician in a generation — quite possibly since Ronald Reagan himself — with an incredibly compelling personal story and rock-solid principles, I regarded her recent resignation as a real positive, as Kowalski did, because she is now free to become the focal point of both the national conservative movement and the conservative wing of the Republican Party.  She astonished me with her decision to resign.  If she never runs for elected office again, well, that’s her decision.  I suspect that we’ll hear from her again.

That is all secondary, however.  Because today, she astonished me again.  Here’s the story from Mashable:

Sarah Palin yesterday announced her plans to resign from the role of Governor of Alaska, leaving the press clueless as to why. Does she plan to retire from politics completely, or is she preparing to make a 2012 presidential bid? Palin is talking to no one…except Twitter and Facebook.  In fact, Palin used her Facebook page to criticize the mainstream media for their treatment of her.

The press appears somewhat frustrated by the decision, with the AP producing a full-length article today discussing the governor’s most recent Tweets, including: “Lots of celebration of Independence & Alaska’s 50th Anniversary of Statehood.” It was only thanks to Twitter (Twitter) that the media knows where Palin was today, the Associated Press adds – she was at the Juneau Fourth of July parade. Her spokesman wasn’t aware of her plans, say reports.

And she posted a statement on her Facebook page, again circumventing the press entirely.  Mashable’s comment was:

The statement gives us little insight into Palin’s future direction, but the strategy is remarkable: with no press release on Palin’s site, a Facebook statement and some Tweets are all the press has to go on. A sign of the times, perhaps?

My comment is, “YOU GO GIRL!”

Perhaps Palin, more than any other politician in recent memory, understands that the MSM is not only not her friend, but her enemy, actively seeking to destroy her politically (and personally if that’s what it takes).  Perhaps the ambush interviews by Couric and Gibson and countless others during the 2008 campaign made her realize at a deep level that as long as she has the (R) after her name, she can expect neither fairness nor truth from the press.

With no immediate need to campaign for anything, I believe what Sarah is doing is showing all conservatives and Republicans the blueprint for future media strategy: DON’T.

Social media represents the next battleground for communications, and I rather think that Sarah is trying to build something that no one else in the Right has been able to do: an alternate channel for connecting directly to the American people, bypassing the panjandrums of print and broadcast entirely.

Any fairminded or relatively neutral individual wanting to know more about Sarah, her views, her policies, can now simply follow her on Twitter, or check out her Facebook Page.  No more distortions by the editors of various dead-tree newspapers.  No more quotes taken out of context by Democratic operatives with jobs as “reporters” — at least, not without direct and immediate source available for all to see on the Web, since said “reporters” will just be copying and quoting directly from Sarah’s social media efforts.

The haters on the Left will hate her no matter what, and they’ll spam her Facebook page or Twitter with vile idiocy.  But the rest of America can see how silly, how immature, how vile the online Left really is as a result.  This too will result in good things for Sarah.

This is an incredibly smart, incredibly insightful, and incredibly forward thinking move on Palin’s part.  If she keeps this up, simply choosing to ignore the MSM and using social media for all of her communication needs, she may be able to change the political world as we know it.

Someone in the comments said Sarah should become a commentator on Fox, alongside Hannity and Rove.  Perhaps she will.  But I rather think she should become a regular contributor to Redstate.com, Townhall.com, and other online centers of conservative activism.  The fairminded, persuadable voters in the middle, will be able to hear directly from Sarah, see her opinions for themselves, and — because social media is inherently a two-way medium — be able to ask her questions, give her opinions, and otherwise interact with her in ways that no pre-fab bullshit TV “town hall meetings” can provide.

This, my friends, is the way forward for conservatives.  Because we’re not about flash and glamor and “framing the debate”.  We’re about truth and what actually works.  The Left — so lauded for using social media to elect Obama — simply cannot tell the truth about its plans, its goals, and its methods.  We can.  And we should.

Imagine if Sarah is successful in getting her message out to the people of America through social media, simply by starving the MSM of any direct information, interviews, or special access.  Should not every Republican politician not follow suit?  The American people will give everyone a fair shake; the American media, not so much.  Why continue to pander to our enemies in the media, as if their imprimatur of favor as a “good Republican” matters one bit to voters?

Oh, she astonishes me, Sarah Palin does.  On Independence Day, she has declared independence from the press.  And critics and professional campaign operatives who tut-tut at her “stupidity” and “naivete” should remember that the declaration by a bunch of ragtag colonists back in 1776 was greeted with jeers and hoots as well.

Are you watching, Chairman Steele?

izoneguy (Diary) Monday, July 6th at 12:45AM EST (link)

I am sure he is and is wondering what the hell to do. Steele has been ineffective in moving the ball forward. I have been on Sarah’s facebook page all day. it is liberal troll bait to the max. They are really running around like chickens with their heads cutoff. Slime & flith – that is the typical Obama supporter. And they like what Obama is doing. Sarah is getting about 7 new subscribers per second.

The point cannot be made often enough: Modern liberalism, as embodied in the Obama presidency, is the defender of the status quo. And the status quo is a road to economic ruin. Political forces cannot redistribute the wealth that the economic system does not produce.

Brilliant..

Here is Clay Shirky from TEDBlog:

There was fury on Twitter against CNN for not adequately covering the situation. Was that justified?

In a way it wasn’t. I’m sure that for the majority of the country, events in Iran are not of grave interest, even if those desperate for CNN’s Iran info couldn’t get access to it. That push model of one message for all is an incredibly crappy way of linking supply and demand.

CNN has the same problem this decade that Time magazine had last decade. They simultaneously want to appeal to middle America and leading influencers. Reaching multiple audiences is increasingly difficult. The people who are hungry for info on events of global significance are used to instinctively switching on CNN. But they are realizng that that reflex doesn’t serve them very well anymore, and that can’t be good for CNN.

Conservatives in America are roughly in the same position that dissidents in Tehran are: the official state media cannot be trusted to get the truth out. But the walls are crumbling, surely as in Washington DC as they are in Tehran.

About half of the Republican Party precinct committeeman slots are not filled.

Here’s a video a fellow by the name of Jim Condit, Jr. of Ohio put together in an attempt to explain to his fellow Republicans the power of the precinct committeeman and the need to fill these unfilled slots with solid, Constitution-loving and respecting conservatives.

Here’s the URL in case the embedding didn’t work:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iaZnDEkWRUE

Imagine the same video on Sarah’s Facebook page, with Sarah making the pitch and with the “production values” being first-rate.

I am crossing my fingers that she decided long ago that her immediate goal in life will now be to fill up all those empty precinct committeemen slots with conservatives. And that after July 26 she’ll lead that effort. Some of her comments in her speech on July 3 hinted at as much.

Do you recall Michael Steele ever saying, “Hey, you registered Republicans, we need you to come into the Party as active precinct committeemen because about half our slots are unfilled and maybe that’s why we got our clocks cleaned last time and maybe we can have better leadership and get-out-the-vote efforts in 2010 if you’ll help us. And, oh, by the way, you get to impact, directly, whether I continue in my job as the GOP Chairman”? Ever see a video even remotely like Jim Condit’s on any GOP web site?

Well, maybe we’ll see one soon on Sarah’s Facebook site.

TS, your unabashed admiration for Sarah Palin

janis (Diary) Tuesday, July 7th at 12:54PM EST (link)

is refreshing. Knowing you to be a man of solid intellect, I have no doubt that you have considered all the possible pluses and minuses and arrived at your conclusion independently, regardless of what others may or may not say about it.

Like you, my admiration for Sarah Palin is profound. Politics as usual is over with and has been since Obama was elected. I am interested in seeing how Ms. Palin intends to play this game. Whatever happens, it will be fascinating to watch!

Palin is no Reagan, more like Michael Reagan at best

Doc Holliday (Diary) Thursday, July 9th at 9:24AM EST (link)

she lost her race. Her poll numbers are not that good. It is true the press has been absolutely horrific to her, but Reagan knew how to handle the press. Recent news on conservative sites say GOP 2010 hopefuls are steering clear of Palin; that should tell you something.

She might rise again and become our leader. On the other hand, I am sure we will see another 7 or so throw their collective hats in the ring. I wish Sarah all the best, but to compare her to Reagan diminishes that hero.

Molon Labe!

Doc- I respectfully disagree

Scope (Diary) Thursday, July 9th at 11:24AM EST (link)

I’m not sure what “race” she lost. Do you mean the McCain presidential race? The most recent poll concerning Palin since she resigned is showing numbers that differ with your comment that “her poll numbers aren’t that good.”

http://www.gallup.com/poll/121514/Palin-Finds-Support-After-Announcing-Resignation.aspx

I doubt many would disagree that the press was very different when Reagan ran. Now the Obama run media continues to go to new lows, so much so they are in the gutter, and most are finding bankruptcy at their doorstep.

Do you have any links showing where 2010 hopefuls are steering clear of her?

I don’t look at Palin as Reagan, I see her having Reagan principles and charisma, and there is nothing diminishing about that. That is, of course not to be the case with those that believe Reaganism is dead, including Newt.

I did offer a link, but it is not that solid

Doc Holliday (Diary) Thursday, July 9th at 11:46AM EST (link)

we will have to see what happens. I suspect she will be of help in some areas such as the South. I don’t think he poll numbers are that great, using your own numbers those that are likely and somewhat likely to vote for her do not reach 50 percent. There is a long way to go, so things can and will change. And if Palin is the greatest thing since Reagan, that shows how weak our party candidates have been.

Dole and Bush Sr. were not movement conservatives, but they certainly had a monumental advantage where it comes to experience, including blood spilled for the nation.

Has been since the government "shutdown"

Achance (Diary) Thursday, July 9th at 10:05AM EST (link)

under Gingrich and, especially, since the failed impeachment of President Clinton. Gingrich and the “94 Revolution” leadership were never the same after the Democrats successfully mau-maued them over the “shutdown.” Nobody in the leadership was ever the same after the impeachment, begun so enthusiastically, sputtered and whimpered to a halt in the Senate. Most everyone here likes to criticize Sen. Graham for wimpyness, but he was a firebrand on the impeachment; once bitten, twice shy, and that is reinforced by the Republican propensity to kick to the curb anyone who generates any sort of controversy. My experience is that it doesn’t matter if you were right or whether you started it or were just defending something, if you generate controversy, at minimum you’re getting a carpet lunch and if it is bad enough, you get kicked to the curb.

As a Party, we simply don’t have the kinds of people who can deal with conflict and confrontation and like it; the Democrats have people holding office who have been operatives and advocates in all sorts of high-conflict areas: unions, advocacy groups, the defense bar, the PI bar, etc. We have people who’ve gotten elected to the Board of the Chamber, the Rotary, or some trade group. Even the lawyers are mostly corporate types rather than blood on the floor advocates.

David Hinz (Diary) Thursday, July 9th at 9:49AM EST (link)

trying to read between the lines of an AP story for those little kernels of truth buried there.

they are SO in the bag leftist that you have to parse every paragraph to figure out what is real and what is bias.

I guess we will see in weeks to come what the fallout really is.

That AP Piece Is Crap

Swamp_Yankee (Diary) Thursday, July 9th at 9:54AM EST (link)

The article doesnt even justify the headline. Subtle bias to me is a lot worse than overt hit pieces and that is a great example of subtle bias.

People read the headline and start with a presumption. If they actually read the whole thing through and look at actual quotes, it is not justified.

actually I agree

Doc Holliday (Diary) Thursday, July 9th at 11:14AM EST (link)

the title sucked me in, the substance was lacking. I think Palin could help in the South. I doubt Christie needs her in NJ to win.

Doc, This is Funny

Talking about the influence of subtle bias and our recent conversation. So Ben Smith picks up that headline for a piece about how inlfuential Palin is in Iowa:

http://www.politico.com/blogs/bensmith/0709/Courting_Palin.html

Ridiculous piled on top of ridiculous. Even when they have somethign good to say, they deflate it by referencing a “legitimate” AP story that has no real justification in the first place.

Palin gets props for engagement. White House low marks for talking "at" people

padennoble (Diary) Friday, August 28th at 3:38PM EST (link)

I think it’s an interesting comparison between Obama’s use of social media and Palin’s. Politics aside. I love that she “circumvents the press.” I’m a young person with no allegiance an anchor man or TV station. I think all television news, cable included, is biased. Listen to all sides for some balance, and entertainment value. I’m a highly critical person so it’s difficult to watch most news. Sure plenty of stations are pro-Obama, and they’re liberal, and it’s obvious and somewhat insulting. Then I switch to Fox and it’ll be predictably the complete opposite. They’re interviewing a priest on an issue and a country music star is their special guest. Nothing wrong with either, I just don’t want to see them on news programs. Churches and stages…I think Shepherd Smith might be the most balanced one over there. But this is a rant I didn’t intend. Just mean to say that the press is indeed unfair and the majority of it does lead one way but I believe the answer should be balance not just overcompensating by going the opposite direction. It’s like envisioning television news being comprised entirely of Keith Oberman and Bill O’Reilly figures completely lacking objectivity, fairness, or credibility.

Back to complimenting Palin on her use of social media…

The White House has done a poor job of engagement. They’re promoters. During the campaign it was more of a two way street. Of course that’s bound to happen. Typical of most organizations executing a marketing plan, once the call to action (purchase, attendance, participation, vote) or goal has been accomplished, there’s not the same attention given to the relationship. In a shallow sense, think of it as the difference between dating and marriage. Once the contract is signed, there may be some complacency as opposed to the earlier stage of courtship.

The true effectiveness of social media marketing is in engagement, talking with people, not just at them. It should be a two way dialogue. That’s where Palin shines. http://padennoble.com/2009/08/26/political-use-of-social-media-palin-v-obama-politicians-talking-with-you-or-at-you/
