Lessons are being taught all around us. Some people learn from them and some people don’t. Some people learn them, live them and then forget. Lessons are most easily forgotten when your candle burns at both ends. You know what I’m talking about.
History is such a great teacher, but some things you must learn from your mom and dad. Your friends can teach you things too. Vassar Bushmills once had a young, low born friend who taught him a lesson. VB told it this way:
Y’ought never lie.
When I was in fifth grade Mick was placed in my class. He was 14 or 15, while most of us were 11, head and shoulders bigger than anyone else. Mick was like a lot of big roughneck kids then, he was still too young for Shop, and had no interest in anything they taught in school, and only wanted to wait until he turned 16 so he could go to work in the mines. (In those days, school teachers earned about 3,000/yr while miners earned closer to 5,000.)
My mother immediately tagged Mick as a thug and a bully. She knew the family, way, way up Machine Shop Hollow. Kept pigs underneath the porch. Never came to church. Kids, all eight of them, always looked like they needed a bath. Heathens!
In truth, since we grew up side by side for a few years, Mick was as gentle as Dan Haggerty, just real rough around the edges. A true nature’s child, he ran the hills like a goat, barefoot as often as not, held the record for typhoid shots I guess, from rusty nails and barbed wire. He built a cabin from saplings and binder’s twine (I used to camp in it when it rained.) Long shocks of red hair, freckles all over his body, and a big grin, a genuine Huck Finn…who coulda played fullback for Notre Dame.
Most of all, Mick had a native, uncultured sense of honor, honesty, and integrity that no kid could learn in Sunday School. On weekends we’d all meet behind the school and play Cowboys and Indians, or somesuch, dividing up into two “armies” usually of 8-10 each. And for guns we’d use sticks we’d find on the ground, that curved just enough to give the stick, and us, some class.
One of those days I ran smack dab into Mick’s sense of justice. We were running and diving behind corners of building, trees, big bushes, going “Bang bang, Gotcha”, when I was running one way and all of a sudden Mick stepped from behind a bush. I jumped behind a half-inch poplar sapling which wouldn’t have concealed my left hand, just as Mick yelled “Bang, Gotcha”. I yelled, “No, I was behind…” only before I could finish my defense, I was trying to pick myself up off the ground, my nose wrapped around my right ear, blood gushing all over a fairly new shirt that Mom told me not to get dirty.
Mick just bent over, with a big “ah shucks’ grin and helped me up, and said “Y’ought never lie” as if he was telling me to zip my fly. I’d never even thought a cuss word before, but a big “Oh, hell!” just shot through my mind as i looked at my shirt. What will Mom do? One of the other guys had a handkerchief, which I used to staunch the bleeding, then I walked that long march home, never reflecting on the lesson of the day for many years to come.
Most people learn these lessons quickly. One bloody nose usually does it. I never knew I was law school material until Mick had to teach me again, a year later, up in the mountains, during an acorn fight. Thrice broken (football), I had to have most of the cartilage surgically removed so I could breathe, but from that day forward, every time a lie comes rushing to the tip of my tongue, like a fellow who ducks walking under helicopter blades, I just naturally flinch…and the lie retreats. Even today.(emphasis is mine)
How’s that for a lesson in truth-telling? Now I ask, as Maximus asked in Gladiator, “Were you not entertained?” Were__You__Not__Entertained? If you weren’t entertained by Bushmills’ story-telling, you just might be an elitist. Or maybe you have a hole in your soul. Either way, you need to have a conversation with yourself.
Now I guess all this sounds a little preachy. The truth often comes across that way. Well, I’m no youngster. I’ve seen some things in the last three decades of running my small business. I am this guy. And so I’ve learned some things about honor, honesty, integrity and the like. To be sure I’ve fallen short at times. All men do. The main thing is to always aim high and be honest about about your mistakes. That’s how you avoid being charged as a hypocrite.
So I say to you my experience tells me the Kraken fell unjustly, in the way the rain falls equally on the just and the unjust. A place that can’t abide EPU, Speciallist and Vassar is not a place I can abide.
For RedState and all who remain, I wish you good hunting. We share a purpose and there are plenty of dragons to slay defeat. Get out from behind the keyboard and go getya some.
Now, cue the Tombstone clip, “Well, bye.”

i have prayed about this for the last few days. i have probably bothered many with my posts of late. for that, i thank you for your indulgence and patience with me.

i look forward to meeting VB at the White Spot. the first gusburger is on me.

Scope (Diary) Wednesday, February 23rd at 10:20PM EST (link)but the assault on those left behind will take far more than the Kraken. For what earthly reason, why? Funny thing is, I doubt that Vassar would lower himself to come back, even if invited to do so. You only get one chance at principles, and that was blown. Many of us are still here, trying to post as though nothing happened, but, there is no question that something very big happened with the no reason given for VB’s forced leaving. You know what, he is above it all. You know it from his writings. Vassar never pushed his opinions on anyone, Vassar never even asked that anyone get on board with him. He invited you to search yourself, and if you wanted to get on board, then so be it. I have really and truly never seen such a travesty before, and I am old.

Never turn your heart to stone,

It is sort of ironic Thomas
powertothepeople (Diary) Wednesday, February 23rd at 11:05PM EST (link)the same song and dance seen in the above posts were first posted when another long term member was shown the door. The only difference being, people saw what he did and even then they played the harps, swore RedState had changed for the worse, Erik was out of line, they were leaving as the could not bare the injustice, and then lo and behold, life went on and most stayed around. Every once in awhile they would again bring us the daily soap opera, but life and the site went on.
This time is no different, only a different soap opera. I like the writings of Vas and EPU, even like speciallist since he was my own personal antagonist, but their banning is none of my concern, I will continue to post until the site Krakens me, and I will not act as if the site just killed my family or dearest of friends. Maybe some should try to do the same or at least have some dignity and move on.
I actually respect the people who are just leaving.
Thomas Crown (Diary) Wednesday, February 23rd at 11:13PM EST (link)I disagree, but I know what it’s like to put a measurable amount of your heart and soul into this place. Eh. You’re right. People grieve differently, I suppose.

It's actually sad that the power plays
Scope (Diary) Wednesday, February 23rd at 11:55PM EST (link)that are playing out at the top, and the members are caught up in the mix. RS has become a laughing stock as they aren’t professional enough to keep it in the background. There really are times when some aren’t smart enough to know when the house is almost burned to the ground, yet, some just pour more fuel on the fire. The members were never anything other than tools and fools it seems. Doubt anyone else will jump into the mainstream media from any popularity at RS. That really is too bad. A really good thing is now being destroyed from within.
I think you overestimate the external importance of the comments.
Thomas Crown (Diary) Thursday, February 24th at 12:01AM EST (link)They’re valuable for community-building and activism. The only people outside the community who care are righty obsessives, lefty obsessives, and actually that’s it.

Mr. Crown- Many here believe this to be a community-building and activism site
Scope (Diary) Thursday, February 24th at 12:23AM EST (link)Hell it says it right here that this is a “conservative activist site.” The Red flashing sign goes off and many here start making those phone calls that are requested by EE. There are endorsement sites from EE that have a link to send money to whatever candidate is the flavor of the day. You know what, you are exactly right, we are all being used as tools. The thing of it is that most here now know to send money to the candidates of their choice, and, they don’t need Redstate to tell them who they should support. If most didn’t do their own homework, then they deserve to be burned by relying on someopne else to tell them who the best candidate is/was. Oh, there is no question that RS will suffer from the mass banning, the vitriol against those that are still here, and the apparent knowledge even by those that don’t follow regularly that we have been duped. You will still keep your mamby pambies, there are those in overstocked supply. There will also be those that will enter the den, not realizing that they are now nothing more than subjects. I’m sure RS will add to the following, until the next civil war or revolution, which will come when anyone of any intelligence enters through the front door, looking for a refuge against the Progressives, but, will soon find out that it just isn’t what it was cracked up to be. Have a good night sir. I’m sure your jollies have been massaged for the night at least.
I want you to do me a favor.

Consider this a request for a post, if you have the time and interest. I think it would be enlightening. My position is that Daniels punted, and despite a good record against PUBLIC sector unions, Mitch has fought Right to Work ever since we started to work on it.

hoosierteacher (Diary) Thursday, February 24th at 1:34AM EST (link)Some of those folks supporting Daniels say that the governor said he would sign the legislation if it came to his desk. (I can point to a comment if you need a source).
Daniels has done everything under the sun to keep it OFF his desk. I claim that Daniels has fought IRTW from the start.
A breakdown on the matter from RS’s resident expert on unions could set the matter straight – not in the eyes of Daniels supporters or detractors – but in the eyes of those who have been hearing a lot of cross talk and don’t know what to make of the matter. There are people being told that Mitch is somehow a champion of Right to Work despite his recent behavior. Mitch himself continues to play both sides (as my own post points out).
Even if you looked at the matter as an after action analysis, I think undecided RS readers would learn a lot about Daniels, Right to Work, and how the issue was handled in Indiana.
Of course, I defer to you. I won’t push the matter, as (again) this isn’t the right post. I DO appreciate your comment about spine though, and will sleep well tonight knowing that businesses and governors (and taxpayers most of all) have you in their corner.

I know that Vassar will be coming back somewhere and hope we can see Art somewhere too, without the distraction of intramural rivalries between different types of conservatives.

I am ashamed and embarrassed that I recommended this blog to my friends and family when I read things like this.
Normal, good, decent people do not treat others with such disrespect.
I understand that the financial success of the owners of this forum, the critical acclaim, fame, fortune, etc. do not rely on the Comments section. What I cannot understand is the pleasure some people take in denigrating and mocking those who have come to realize that this forum is no longer a welcoming place for the exchange of ideas.
After my son’s unit was attacked near Ramadi two years ago, I spent several afternoons sitting at Bethesda Naval Med. Ctr. with the families of two of his Marine buddies who had been severely injured. One coded while I was there. Despite losing most of his leg, and sustaining horrific internal injuries, he pulled through.
I was struck by the gentle kindness of his mother, her grace in welcoming me to pray with her, her lack of bitterness or anger against the enemy, her love of America. Many of the commenters I’ve “met” here remind me of her. Just normal, decent Americans.
I am so sorry to see normal, decent people put down here.
Put down?

runner12 (Diary) Thursday, February 24th at 11:40AM EST (link)I cannot sit by any longer without saying something,
In life, things happen that we do not agree with. It hurts us even more when it involves a friend or a family member. But at some point, we have to pick up the pieces and move on. Engaging in bitter dialogue towards someone we perceive as hurting someone we care about is human, but not helpful to us or others, especially given that we do not know the entire story.
Has anyone stopped to think that the maybe the reason management has not come out with the details is that it would cast a disparaging light on the people involved? I mean, it would be much easier for them to come right out and give every little detail. But they choose not to. There must be a reason for this, and we need not assume it is due to simply wanting to protect themselves.
Please do not let this cause division and strife within the RS community. If you feel you must leave, then do so. But please do not take parting shots as you go. It only fans the flames of bitterness.
Just my two cents, and it is kindly meant.
what has kept this simmering is the lack of details

Tbone (Diary) Thursday, February 24th at 12:07PM EST (link)Over the last 6 years I have been here, I have had more arguments with “management” than anyone, including Erick. And, I have been banned a number of times and threatened with it a heck of a lot more by many of the Mods up-thread. Yet, nasty old Tbone is still here because I understand how this site came to be, how it works and exactly what happened last week which I fully support.
It is not just a question of understanding who owns the joint, its respecting those that actually built and operate the joint. They DESERVE to call the shots. A little bit by virtue of the offices they hold but more importantly by virtue of the work that they do and have done. It is said that one shouldn’t argue with success. As such, a lot of you should STFU.
Commentors come along and think because they are so clever and have writing gifts that they are important. Many cultivate “friends” and form cliques which is fine unless the cliques become elitist in their treatment of others. I have seen them come and go over the years and it has always been good riddance.
Just as I am sure Art Chance is waist deep in Murkowski’s trough and no longer needs Redstate to feed his ego, I am sure that VB will find ample other venues to preen his writing feathers to the adoration of his fans. If that is what you want, go there and adorate to your heart’s content.
Redstate has done important work and will continue to do so. If you don’t want to participate, go wallow somewhere else and quit wasting bandwidth here. Now if you don’t like what I have said here and you have been around awhile you know what part of Tbone you can kiss. If you are new, I don’t belong to any cliques and I don’t cultivate any friends because I would never want to offend a friend and sooner or later I will offend you too.
But, quit the whining it just makes you look pathetic.

Hooah_Mac (Diary) Thursday, February 24th at 4:19PM EST (link)Without quality participation, good writing, and community support, Redstate would be nothing and no one outside of Georgia would know who Erick Erickson is. Kudos to Erick for having built this site into what it is by fostering that. Some of the moderators here have either forgotten that or think that it is no longer an issue because Redstate is so high up there it doesn’t need us anymore. Yes, I said us. The level of vitriol on this site seems to be currently higher than during the usually contentious GOP primary season. Many of the truly uncalled for, derogatory and degrading remarks I see come from the people that should be the adults in the room.
There is a sense of betrayal, after spending years working here, pouring time, thought, energy and soul into this place, a person can be cast aside, without even simple respect. Yes, some of those leaving or forcibly removed were out of line – but how could anyone rationally believe that kicking them on the way out will improve anything? I personally believe that Erick should have a talk with those who officially represent the site in the comments, because they bring the esteem of the site down when they unleash the snark.
I am not threatening to leave or running for the door, but I strongly suspect that as I begin blogging regularly again (medicine change finally has my head relatively clear), Redstate will no longer be the first place I think of. Something that site management should consider and address, unless they truly DON’T think that the little people are important anymore.

That's very true Bill S
Scope (Diary) Thursday, February 24th at 6:11PM EST (link)but with respect to Hooah’s post, he pointed out that it isn’t a great idea to kick someone when they are already down. The list of 5ers is interesting, for some this is the most they’ve had to say in a long while, and the rest never learned the biggest lesson VB gave here, it’s cowardly to talk bad about someone(s) when they have no ability to defend themselves. It’s interesting that many on that list never confronted VB when he could have responded. I don’t ever remember a soul confronting VB saying that his posts were nonsence, and of no value. Also, as was pointed out above, when someone is saying goodbye, why do some need to get their jollies in slamming the door on their back on the way out? The same could be said of others that are no longer here. Like I said, I would never count on them to have my back, or my loved ones. Sometimes STFU goes both ways. Hooah understands having your buddies back only to well.
Have you considered...
Bill S (Diary) Thursday, February 24th at 6:18PM EST (link)that those who haven’t said anything in a long time have been in that state because they thought that THEIR opinions didn’t count? And now that some things have occurred, they now see fit to re-emerge? My point behind noting that there are RS members commenting there is that there are multiple opinions at play here and it’s not just “the front page versus the rest”. That attitude is just silly, and it should be obvious that it’s not the case.
And this is the last I say on the matter. I have kept out of these discussions, and I am going back into hiding on this topic. But I’ll just close by saying this: it is time to move on and get back to the matter of beating up the Left.
