Is Miller the New Murkowski?

Watching the drips and drabs of information coming from the Alaska Senate race it is getting apparent that Joe Miller has taken the whining mantle away from Lisa Murkowski. Setting aside politics for the moment it is clear Miller is doing exactly what he complained Murkowski was doing, not going away dignified. I know it’s not exactly the same as it was clear she lost and he is only in the vote counting stage, however his tactics tend to resemble the Franken model in Minnesota.

He should be diligent in his oversight of the count, however it is becoming clear he is trying to get otherwise valid ballots thrown out and contest enough of the write-in vote to get this into a court room. If he thinks he has any future in Alaska politics he should demand that the process be transparent and offer the same courtesy to Murkowski he was demanding from her (aside from her actions to the contrary).

If we are going to be a party that stands on principle, then those principles need to be insured.

It's Becoming A Slugfest

It is obvious that the contest will further divide the Republican Party in Alaska and the fight between Miller and Murkowski gets nastier.
My hopes are on Miller winning.

Suing to compel AK to obey its own election laws is not “whining”.

The Perils of the Prevent Defense

You are correct…Not playing aggressive offense in matters of well established, concisely worded election laws is the equivalent of sitting back in a prevent defense in the third quarter with a one point lead – a formula for loosing. For examples of how to and how not to play the game, please see Florida 2000 (President), New Jersey 2002 (Senator), Minnesota 2002 (Senator), Washington 2004 (Governor), Minnesota 2008 (Senator), …

Obeying election laws is one thing

Challenging a ballot because the “r” looks a little bit like a “v” is another thing. Or challenging because the “L” was cursive and the rest was printed. That’s ridiculous, and if he has any integrity he should be telling his team not to challenge that kind of ballot.

We believe in government by the people. If it is obvious that the people of Alaska have chosen Murkowski, conservatives should not want it overturned on a technicality because someone’s “r” looked like a “v”.

I heartily dislike her, and am very disappointed in how that election has gone, but if Miller wins, he needs to do so because that is what the electorate has chosen. And right now, he is giving the strong impression that the will of the electorate is not as important as winning. And it smells bad, even if he were to end up being a much better senator than Murkowski ever would be.

Some of the ridiculous challenges have done tremendous damage, because they make it look like his legitimate legal challenge isn’t based on principle. He now looks like the sore loser, rather than Murkowski.

After looking at your last few diaries (The end of the Palin effect? Are you kidding?), it is clear to me that you will soon come to a disagreement with this site.

I play a lot of golf and the defining point of golf is that it’s a gentleman’s game whereby you do the right thing whether anyone is looking or notices. With that as a back drop I try to teach my children the same – do the right thing, play hard and don’t cheat!

While I dislike Murkowski and would have never voted for her, I would also never, ever make some of the ridiclous challenges his team is reported to have made. Most conservatives I know believe in the rule of law and good sportsmanship, win or lose. If we don’t stand for that then we are no better than those on the Left.

I agree

Dan Maffei is playing the same deceitful game in NY-25, challenging valid Republican votes.

It’s wrong in both cases.
