The reason that I’ve chosen to use a diary to respond to Leon’s front page posting is that I believe that my comments encompass concepts that certainly need to be discussed on their own merits. I believe that the gist of Leon’s position is that insufficient evidence has been presented to allow anyone to arrive at an objective conclusion as to the veracity of the accusers or the strength of their either moral or legal positions. In this I concur.
It has certainly been demonstrated that people have a wide range of tolerance for moral turpitude exhibited on the part of political leaders. I will enter Bill Clinton as my Exhibit “A”. As such, were we to become privy to even the most detailed accounts of the complaints involved and offered ample opportunity to judge the character of the accusers, there would still be a wide range of acceptance or rejection of Cain’s actions which led to these settlements. Of course, without this information, we are all limited to speculation and conjecture, neither which has any chance of producing a conclusive result.
Consequently, I must take the position that investing in speculation and conjecture to determine the guilt or innocence of the candidate and then, somehow to conflate the guilt, if guilt there be, to making a determination of whether Cain possesses a sufficient degree morality and self-control to be entrusted with the presidency is really a moot point.
However, Bill Clinton proved that the office of President can certainly be held by a person of alley cat morality. Subsequently, Obama has proven that the office of President shouldn’t be held by a person who exhibits; a lack of experience, an uneven temperament, a lack of preparation, a lack of judgment in picking competent advisors, a willingness to resort to obfuscation, omission and fabrication, a fragile ego that lashes out when challenged, a narcissistic intensity to blame others for failures, a victim mentality and a willingness to claim racism as the basis for any criticism.
Unfortunately, the events of the last several days have illustrated that Cain can and has exhibited all of these traits in his response to this matter. Further, Cain has also exhibited these traits in a way that should give any objective observer long pause in considering how he would respond to the multitude of challenges which he would face in a general election.
Because over the next several months Republicans from across the country will be choosing a nominee to do battle with the most unethical person to ever be elected President, it is incumbent upon each of us to make a thoughtful judgment as to the qualities that our nominee must have to overcome a formidable opponent and an unrelenting liberal press. Personally, regardless of the depth and breadth of the sexual harassment allegations, and regardless if they are ever revealed, Herman Cain has not exhibited the qualities and traits which I think our nominee must possess to win back the White House. As such, I don’t believe he deserves the nomination.

The point cannot be made often enough: Modern liberalism, as embodied in the Obama presidency, is the defender of the status quo. And the status quo is a road to economic ruin. Political forces cannot redistribute the wealth that the economic system does not produce.
You can send it to Rush, though people would much rather

I think it is because his supporters would have to remove their blinders and face the reality of his inadequacies as a candidate.

Hannity, Rush and Levin have deserted us
gracie (Diary) Friday, November 4th at 11:36PM EST (link)and for the life of me I cannot figure out why.
It is one thing to insist that a conservative black candidate be treated fairly; all of us want that. But Hannity’s logic that the problem is ALL about the double standard of Cain being treated to an rigorous vetting while Obama was not makes me feel like I am going insane…does Hannity wish Obama had gotten a Cainian vetting? Say what??
I actually do wish we cuold get your most excellent diary to their attention. Sometimes I think it is personal on their part…i. e. they have received so much criticism personally that they are missing the point you so aptly say: Cain has shown himself to not have the temperment and basic knowledge to be President. That’s all there is to it.
It’s getting lonely out here on this limb.
Rush and Hannity seem to
avgjo (Diary) Saturday, November 5th at 8:07AM EST (link)be stuck (as many conservatives of late) in ‘two wrongs make a right’ mode.
If they saw this (excellent) diary entry, they’d have to admit Cain is not ready for president. They’ll never do that.
Why? Because they’d have to ‘splain why they didn’t bring Herb’s inadequacies to light much earlier. Which in a way means them admitting they were wrong.
I’d have to think a long while to remember the last time they did that.

As conservatives we need to get over the reflex of thinking someone is perfect just because they were attacked by the left.
To a great extent this was also a reason that many of us, including myself spent a lot of energy defending Bush, when he let us down time after time.
I am past that now. I will defend a conservative against unfair or false charges, but that does not mean I will support them in everything they do or say.

Sean Hannity is a nice guy, I guess.
Flagstaff (Diary) Saturday, November 5th at 6:50PM EST (link)A deep thinker, no.
So what, in this case? He is applying his own observations to the issue, which I believe include a claim that he’s known Cain for many years (maybe not, I might have imagined that). Briefly, I think he just believes that it’s very unlikely that Cain did anything seriously wrong. Given the lack of specifics in the “charges,” he could be right.
Tbone’s opinions about Cain’s suitability for President don’t seem to have much to do with that question.
The radio personalities that I hear are not picking a favorite or even telling us their preferences. You are probably partly right that “they have received so much criticism personally that they are missing the point,” but it’s probably more that their point is to reveal and emphasize the unequal treatment our guys (all of them) get from the LSM.
At least Rush is leaving it up to you to figure out the rest of it for yourself. I’m not sure what you want them to do or say.

It would be nice if Rush or Hannity
avgjo (Diary) Saturday, November 5th at 10:08PM EST (link)would
(a) quit playing ‘two wrongs make a right’. Watch/listen to them carefully. Whenever one of our esteemed candidates does something stupid or something wrong, they MIGHT make a passing comment, but they just ramp up the attacks at Obama twice as hard.
(b) call a spade a spade. They have not called out Cain for being dishonest, or uninformed or for playing the race card against Perry (well, Rush played the ‘two wrongs make a right’, MIGHT version). Hannity’s worse on this issue than Rush. Hannity is a half-way conservative who is enamored with the likes of Giuliani and Chris Christie, who hardly qualify as conservative anywhere outside of the NE.
(c) quit spending so much time whining about the double standard in the media. WE GET IT. If Conservatives would spend 1/2 as much time and energy actually doing something as they do whining about how unfair the MSM is, we’d get somewhere. As much as he gets on my nerves, I’ll give Glenn Beck credit: he’s gone out and started his attempt to supplant the MSM with his new TV station (no, I’m not a subscriber.) It never ceases to amaze me that legions of conservatives I’ve met, who talk about ‘whiny’ liberals who cry about ‘fairness’, love guys like these Talk show hosts, who whine about fairness (of the media) all the time. Crazy.
(d) quit coming across as partisan hacks. Both gave quiet, walk-on-eggshells interviews to that jerk Boehner when he screwed up the budget deal, and hardly will you hear either make specific comments criticizing the GOP. Sure, every once in a while, they’ll talk about the squishy GOP (Rush is better on this than Hannity), but rarely will they name names or give examples, and they’ll never call for primary challenges, etc. All of this might be accounted for by ‘timidity’ or ‘respect’ for the GOP. It’s the ‘two wrongs make a right’ game played by these guys that makes the crossover to hackery.
Ceterum autem censeo, Obamaecuram esse delendam.

About "the double standard in the media."
Flagstaff (Diary) Monday, November 7th at 2:08AM EST (link)Yes, we get it. But you know, I used to write about it a lot myself, and I’d get responses like “It’s a fact of life, get over it,” “Nothing you can do about it,” and the worst one of all, “We won anyway, didn’t we?” As if that meant we’d win the next time with an uneven playing field, too, and every time.
That was back when it seemed like a majority of even the folks who read this blog didn’t really get it, they didn’t get it that tilting that field can have a real bad effect, and we really did need to combat it some way. IMHO, the way to combat it is to make sure everybody knows it exists.
Well, as you say, you GET IT. But the radio guys aren’t talking just to you or me, but with this topic they’re talking to the non-conservatives who listen, the folks who still believe that NBC News is concerned mostly with news rather than propaganda. For them, the message is repeated frequently, so they don’t miss it. Sort of like Bachmann tells us she’s a “tax lawyer” and mother of 5 children and 23 foster children” every time she gets within reach of a microphone. Every time she says that, there is someone listening who hasn’t heard it, and that’s who she’s talking to.
They aren’t in the business of “fairness,” they’re in the business of defeating Obama by affecting opinions. I agree with that. Make up your own mind (I think you have) about Cain.
Again, if you already know about this, why do they need to harp on it? And I believe they have probably both talked about those topics. You just don’t like it that they haven’t been more definitive, right?
Rush has been pretty clear about this. He isn’t in the business of picking candidates for the Republican Party, or supporting A in a primary instead of B, C, or D. He is in the business of evicting Obama from the White House. You can certainly tell that he likes some of them better than others, but it would make absolutely no sense for him to denounce anybody without proof, or endorse anybody under any circumstances. If you can’t figure that out, you should be calling to talk to him instead of reading this.
“The press is so powerful in its image-making role that it can make a criminal look like he’s the victim and make the victim look like he’s the criminal. If you aren’t careful, the newspapers will have you hating the people who are being oppressed and loving the people who are doing the oppressing.”– Malcolm X, Audubon Ballroom, December 13, 1964
So let's look at this, Flagstaff.
avgjo (Diary) Monday, November 7th at 12:31PM EST (link)1. I think things like this clarify that most Americans get it.
http://www.mrc.org/biasbasics/pdf/BiasBasics.pdf
Sure, there are folks that still believe that the MSM is unbiased, but I’m not sure people who still believe that are going to be convinced of anything sensible.
2. It has nothing to do with ‘fairness’ and everything to do with honesty. And like it or not, honesty is one of those things that doesn’t just have to do with idealism; its neglect has hard consequences in the real world. The failure of these guys (Rush et al.) to deal with their own side has, I believe contributed to the brazen attitude of people like Boehner to their own constituency; after all, if their own side won’t hold them accountable, why NOT go along to get along with the dims and keep getting those golf invitations from Obama? And all those precious undecideds that you made mention of are going to pick up on this as they listen to these guys, so it goes to credibility, as well. When Rush/Hannity/whoever talks about the ‘unfairness’ or ‘bias’ or ‘double standard’ of the media, it doesn’t help when they engage in the same sort of behavior, esp to those not invested in them (the sort of folks you mentioned.)
3. Why harp about Cain’s problems, indeed? There are a couple of good reasons. First, if, as you contend, the talk show hosts should be worried about the uninformed, they’d be doing a great service to the public by informing them. I of course was arguing from the perspective that these guys are largely talking to conservatives. And my experience is that conservatives follow their lead. If they play ‘two wrongs make a right’ , that’s what conservatives will do. Just read this site, and see how many good people are making these same arguments.
4 Re: their being definitive. I would just like them to spend some real time discussing the failures of the GOP, so that their audience will follow that lead, get ginned up and maybe actually do some of the heavy lifting of holding their representatives accountable.
5. I didn’t ask him to denounce Cain for sexual harassment without proof. There is plenty of evidence of him lying about things like the central bank (as he did at one of the recent debates), playing the race card with Perry, not knowing anything about foreign policy, etc. So your last comment was completely unfounded.
Thanks for your response.
Ceterum autem censeo, Obamaecuram esse delendam.

Was this the comment to which you refer?
Flagstaff (Diary) Monday, November 7th at 1:33PM EST (link)“If you can’t figure that out, you should be calling to talk to him instead of reading this.”
It is well-founded, IMHO.
You sound a lot like any Democrat apologist we might come across on CNN. “I would just like them to spend some real time discussing the failures of the GOP….” Really? So would every Democrat in the country.
“There is plenty of evidence of him lying about things like the central bank (as he did at one of the recent debates), playing the race card with Perry, not knowing anything about foreign policy, etc.”
What you call evidence, I call either opinion or very weak gruel. Very few people understand the Fed, and if you claim to understand it, you should write a diary here explaining just what Cain’s “lie” was. Good luck. Related to Perry, the race card, and foreign policy, some of it I don’t like either, but so what? I don’t like a lot of stuff, but I don’t claim it makes anybody unfit to serve. And it comes nowhere near the lies that Obama told as he was debating McCain, lies that the LSM didn’t even bother to check on (but did you notice that CNN had a “fact checker” to debunk claims by Republicans after the CNN debate?)
Thanks for the link to the MRC. I’ll save the pdf it generates.
“Sure, there are folks that still believe that the MSM is unbiased, but I’m not sure people who still believe that are going to be convinced of anything sensible.” Could be, but it they are, they might well be listening to those guys–all the more reason for the hosts to NOT join in the liberal chorus reciting the shortcomings of the Right.
“The press is so powerful in its image-making role that it can make a criminal look like he’s the victim and make the victim look like he’s the criminal. No diary needed, Flagstaff.
avgjo (Diary) Monday, November 7th at 2:25PM EST (link)GOP/Bloomberg debate:
Cain in response to Paul’s comment that he called people who wanted a fed audit ‘ignorant’:
“You have misquoted me. I did not call you or any of your people ignorant. I don’t know where that came from,”
Cain on the Boortz show, Dec 29, 2010:
‘I don’t know where, why people think we’re gonna learn this great amount of information by auditing the Federal Reserve. I think a lot of people are calling for this audit of the Fedeal Reserve because they DON’T KNOW ENOUGH ABOUT IT.’
The capitalized phrase, as you well know, is synonymous with ‘ignorant’. Lie.
I sound like a Democrat apologist? See, that attempt at comparison fails, because dims who engage in that are deflecting criticisms of their own party by insisting on scrutiny of the other party. (The same kind of game the talk show hosts in question are engaging in.) I am calling for a little more examination of my own party because I believe the greatest threat to the American way of life is compromise and weakness by so-called conservatives and the Republican party. Fundamental difference.
And see! you engage in the ‘two wrongs make a right’ argument. ‘And it comes nowhere near the lies Obama told…’ Really? Does that make Cain’s faults any less? We claim to be the party of values. They don’t. The precious independents know that. So Obama is guilty of lying. He doesn’t wear his religion on his sleeve. Mr. Cain talks about God publicly (which I appreciate). Because he does so, he has to be very careful about his public behavior, or he will also be branded with ‘hypocrite’, a very powerful charge.
Ceterum autem censeo, Obamaecuram esse delendam.

So wrong.
Flagstaff (Diary) Tuesday, November 8th at 2:15AM EST (link)But it isn’t exactly synonymous. Among other nuances, ignorant not only denotes “not knowing enough about it,” which is akin to “uninformed,” it also connotes “lacking knowledge or awareness in general; uneducated or unsophisticated,” which are all much more highly charged, negative adjectives than “uninformed,” and wold certainly be considered insulting.
In fact and fairly analyzed, Cain did not call anybody “ignorant.” He didn’t use the word, and he didn’t insult anybody with what he did say, which you must admit is what Paul was trying to imply by replacing Cain’s words with the much coarser “ignorant.”
Personally, I have no problem with calling most of them ignorant (because they don’t make the effort to really understand the demon they want to exorcize)–very few of them are informed and educated about the Fed. But Cain didn’t do that, at least not in the instance you provided for reference.
“The press is so powerful in its image-making role that it can make a criminal look like he’s the victim and make the victim look like he’s the criminal. Oh yes.
Flagstaff (Diary) Tuesday, November 8th at 2:53AM EST (link)In that respect, you have nothing to worry about. It isn’t one of Hannity’s usual topics, but Rush takes it up fairly regularly. Always tempered with, “If we don’t win, none of it matters.”
There is one radio host who does just what you say. Ed Shultze ripped Hillary Clinton every day when she was vying with Obama for the Dem nomination. I though it was quite strange. Of course now he never has a bad thing to say about any Democrats, except that they aren’t far enough to the left and they aren’t standing up to those strong Republicans,
“The press is so powerful in its image-making role that it can make a criminal look like he’s the victim and make the victim look like he’s the criminal. Well, Mr. Devine,
avgjo (Diary) Monday, November 7th at 12:36PM EST (link)I’m not sure if I’m one of the ‘bots’ you mentioned. I’d actually like to know, since you’re one of the few Cain supporters whose opinion matters to me, and I say that in sincerity.
Rush Limbaugh’s usually on target. What bothers me is his (and others’) ‘two wrongs make a right’ approach that has really geared up the last two years (well before the appearnce of Mr. Cain) and, if the charges against Mr. Cain are indeed founded (and despite my hopes he’s not the candidate, I have prayed for him and his family that they are not), Rush/Hannity/etc.’s vociferous defense of them will make them look silly. Flagstaff is absolutely right that there is no evidence of Cain’s guilt; unfortunately, that same situation makes his innocence uncertain at this point (in the court of public opinion). Coupled with the fact that many (myself included, to be honest) perceive Mr. Cain as not always honest, that is dangerous ground to walk on.

Sure, sir/ma'am.
avgjo (Diary) Monday, November 7th at 2:36PM EST (link)It’s a very common pattern with him (and Hannity, and most of the others.)
whenever a Republican is attacked, legitimately or not, one of these guys will mention it, and then go right to attacking Obama/Pelosi/Reid, sort of like you did above (which I pointed out). Often, there is a bridge comment, along the lines of ”Of course, X did…’ where X is a liberal. Or something like: ‘But when so-and-so did this, there wasn’t a peep from the media…’
Just today, (and I only listened to a sum total of 15 minutes), re: Cain, he brought up Jesse Jackson, someone with ‘real’ problems.
Now let’s see.
We don’t know whether or not Cain is actually guilty of these charges. It should be sufficient to state that and be done with it. But no, we’ve got to throw in a lib who did something bad. The matter at hand is whether or not Cain is guilty. We’re not talking about Jesse Jackson, Bill Clinton or Edwards. We’re talking about Herman Cain. What those other guys did has no bearing on Mr. Cain’s guilt or innocence. And throwing their names in just looks like an attempt to play two wrongs make a right.

I'll simply add
Flagstaff (Diary) Tuesday, November 8th at 2:41AM EST (link)that what you are describing isn’t a claim that “two wrongs make a right,” it’s an addition to the discussion, a deflection if you wish, that points out the difference in the way the press has treated the two different but similar stories.
You may consider it merely a non sequitur, or a deflection, but it isn’t in any way an attempt to justify bad behavior by comparing it to other bad behavior. That would be “Democrats said Clinton’s bad behavior is just personal business and none of our business, so similar bad behavior by Republicans must be OK too.”
To explain one thing–I wrote
My point was not that lying is OK, but that off-the-cuff imprecision or even error is a very low level of misbehavior in the political arena, especially when compared to intentional misrepresentation of one’s own proposed policies like “you won’t have to change your health insurance if you don’t want to [except my program will destroy your current plan]” or “we can insure all those additional people and it won’t cost a dime more” (which was obviously impossible but never challenged).
For perspective, I’d say that Mitt Romney’s and Michelle Bachmann’s misrepresentation of Rick Perry’s border philosophy, his instate tuition policy, and his Gardisil decree, falls in the middle–both of them are commenting on just a small part of all of those things and they may well have not understood Perry’s position at. They seemed to be responding to what the press had to say as much as to the reality of his positions, but that is Perry’s responsibility to straighten out. What it did show was some mean-spiritedness on their part, though, which reflected badly on them, just as Cain’s uninformed comment about the Perry hunting area rock reflected badly on him more than on Perry.

gracie (Diary) Sunday, November 6th at 3:19PM EST (link)Admittedly I have not heard every word spoken by Rush and Sean this week but what I have heard is a prejudice I would not like to hear from the other side. I would like an attempt at getting to the truth.
What I heard was Hannity screaming about the unfairness of Cain being vetted strenuously and Rush actually ridiculed the quote “cover-up.”
It seems there was a cover up of sorts which several folks below have explained perfectly ( avgjo; tricianc at 12:02) in that Cain’s stories changed from hour to hour about the two ladies; there was extreme hyperbole against the Perry canpaign and zero desire to reveal the truth. This would have been reported had it been a Dem candidate so why not one of us?
I look to them to report the news to us. The rest of the media is determined to obfuscate the truth; I need them to tell it or we will not end up with our best candidate, whoever he/she may be.
I think you're looking in the wrong place

Rush and Sean are avowedly partisan. They don’t claim to be newsmen (at least Rush doesn’t). Why in the world would they be inclined to do the work of the Huffington-Puffington? I don’t think they try to cover up anything, but they surely aren’t attempting to provide comprehensive news coverage about the Right.
Re: “Hannity screaming about the unfairness of Cain being vetted strenuously,” it’s clear to me that he has a point and likes to keep making it–nobody vetted Obama except him (Sean), but they’re all out to make sure no stone is unturned in the case of Cain. And the questions asked of Cain sound a lot like badgering rather than information-gathering.
“Admittedly I have not heard every word spoken by Rush and Sean this week but what I have heard is a prejudice I would not like to hear from the other side. I would like an attempt at getting to the truth.”
Neither of those guys is in a position to tell you “the truth.” They don’t know what it is, nor do I, and in fact Cain may not even know. After all, he can’t really “know” who is even being quoted–it may be the women he knows about, and it may be somebody who is just making things up, IOW, “fishing.” At least that was possible at first, so the “I don’t know” kind of response was appropriate then. The only “truth” anybody has is that Politco wrote a story that made certain assertions. Beyond that, we have only speculation.
Incidentally, I’m not familiar with what you call the cover-up. Could you explain it, or point me to where you’ve already done so? Stories in cases like this do tend to change, so I don’t consider that to be a cover up.
OK re: the "cover-up" I have heard this term used all week and by numerous sources
gracie (Diary) Monday, November 7th at 2:33AM EST (link)I have listened to Mark Davis, Rush, Sean and Levin; watched Bret Baier which was actually good this week. The day Cain was on “The Hot Seat”, he was in studio with Krauthammer, A B Stoddard & Stephen Hayes. The questions were detailed about how he heard, when and what he was willing to tell. The answers were so sketchy that the panel were shuffling n their seats, looking around and rolling their eyes. Charles K has some definite ideas but I cannot quote him. Perhaps you can find a clip of those shows say on Wed or Thurs..
Having heard so many folks talk about the subject I cannot remember who used the word cover up first although I specifically remember Rush saying in these cases it is often not the crime, but the cover-up. And in this case he was making great fun of “the cover-up.”
I read all over the web probably like you do and a myriad of articles friends send me. I like the National Review. I do not claim to be any sort of expert or to have a perfect memory. I am just saying that the term cover up was used loosely to mean the way Cain explained himself….item by item as the news broke…he did not remember the allegations, then he remembered one, and on and on. All you have to do is read this one thread particularly the persons I quoted above to get an idea of how his story was changing if you happened to be too busy to follow it.
No one said he produced one single encompassing cover up but it was used to describe his answers and reactions to the breaking news. THIS is where many people including myself thought his story showed inconsistencies if not downright lies.
OK “they” do not tell the truth…it is not even known yet. But I feel they could attempt to look for it.. Again I guess we have differing opinions on Cain. Sean appears to be attempting to STOP the inquisition because it was not done that way to Obama so is unfair. JMO; you are entitled to yours.

I just love the single digits, scrapping of the current code, resulting econ boom (that will also be started by merely removing Obama and via other tax plans, flat, admittedly) and so do “like” it better that others I have seen so far. I want drastic tax reform and very low rates. I opposed FAIR for years due to high sales tax rate and need for pre-bates.
But 9% is so low and no pre-bates. There is no escaping that it will affect the very poor, but only slightly, I think, exp given the embeds that will come out of the price. But that is a discussion on another diary.
My interest now is more about a cultural stand against vague sex harassment, racism claims, than Cain per se.
But his discussion with Newt and subsequent stories about Cain on China years ago in columns concerned with Chinese expansion of nuke capability, eases earlier fears re knowledge and laziness.
I still lean to Cain.

Mike read your diary; disagree with more than ever
gracie (Diary) Tuesday, November 8th at 2:13PM EST (link)I found this to be the first fair interview of Herman Cain, at least on the current issues; your eyes glazed over. The only person in your diary I agreed with was carolynr; she speaks my language! A practical person.
While I do understand the principle of deflation…I just do not believe it will happen as a practical matter. Or trickle down soon enough to make a difference. I thing the manufacturers will pocket the difference before giving it to the American people. The box of cereal and the bag of chips that are now half sized and cost the same or more…are these suddenly going to increase in size or cost less? I bow to your education but I have a lot of common sense.
I think 999 is just nuts! Try to get people to pay 17.25% on all their purchases including food and see how much they will buy. How will that help the economy? And the very idea of considering a federal tax with the16th still in place…ludicrious! And now one of the 9′s coming out for the poor; maybe one of the 9′s is coming out for the federal tax such that scope and I were laughing, we will now have 009? Truly Cain does not understand his own plan.
But this blind allegience to Cain…WHY are you so willing to overlook the numerous examples of his ignorance on foreign affairs?? I knew right of return, I knew China has nukes…has this man been living in a vaccuum? No, he has been a talk show host with current events coming daily across his desk.
I also believe that if a man is accused of sexual harrassment he will remember it and want to know the results. With these other ladies coming out with no apparent financial renumeration….does that not look like a pattern?
You trust H Cain? well, I do not! I do not trust him to be a truth teller. I do not trust him to handle a real crisis. I do not trust that he is able to manage the day to day running of the American government. His business plan of calling on his advisors does not cut it in an emergency.
No I do not believe Herman Cain is our best nominee.

So far, his strengths minus weaknesses still come out ahead of the same equation for all the other running. But it is not accurate to say that I have ignored his weaknesses. Quite the contrary. What may be confusing is that I don’t admit supporting a flawed candidate while -bots for others or even for Cain pretend there are none. I am not in that category.
Now, you are fee to re-read my columns (see above) pertaining to the campaign and note my discussion of Cain’s weaknesses. What I won’t do is dedicate a whole column to his weaknesses. I only have done that about Mitt!

The point cannot be made often enough: Modern liberalism, as embodied in the Obama presidency, is the defender of the status quo. And the status quo is a road to economic ruin. Political forces cannot redistribute the wealth that the economic system does not produce.
Nail on head.
jackdaniels11 Sunday, November 6th at 8:53PM EST (link)Obama and his friends in the chuckle-mafia (SNL, Letterman, Leno, liars on dKos) and the MSM (Katie Couric, Charles Gibson) proved that discrimination against women is alive and healthy in the 21st Century. Why would Obama and these allegedly progressive-leaning individuals and groups risk alienating the female vote which just happens to be the largest sector of the American electorate? Because it worked.
Not only that, it will work again. We’ve seen them do it to Michele Bachmann. They will do it do the next powerful conservative woman, and the next one, and the next one.
Race is still an issue that they have to tiptoe around and insinuate what they mean. Not so with gender discrimination. They show all of their nasty fangs and claws when a conservative woman shows up with the personality and resume that make her presidential.
On our side, there are those who defend Cain who would never, ever have defended either Palin or Bachmann of similar allegations.
Racial barriers have always come down before gender barriers. Look at suffrage, right to serve in the military, equal opportunity in jobs like law enforcement, fire fighting, construction, etc.
Hopefully, those who are staunchly defending Cain now, to the point of reminding people of inherent biases which may affect judgment will also staunchly defend Mitt Romney, Sarah Palin, Michele Bachmann, or whoever else is the victim of gender-based or religion-based attacks.
Oh please...
mbecker908 (Diary) Sunday, November 6th at 9:01PM EST (link)The attacks against Bachmann have been right on point, she went out of her way to make a complete fool of herself and absolutely deserves what she’s gotten.
With respect to Palin, the attacks were mostly personal and she refused to take them on face to face. Posting crap on Facebook, feeding her toadys doesn’t pass for a mature response. She could have buried the media if she’d taken them on directly, she chose not to.
Neither of these two twits deserved to be defended, one because what she’s said is indefensible and the other because he refused to defend herself. At least Cain is making an attempt to go after his accusers. That’s more than Palin did in almost three years of playing the victim card.

civil truth (Diary) Monday, November 7th at 2:31PM EST (link)The transition is where Cain has stumbled badly, most recently this whole “sexual harassment” matter.
Similarly, for Perry the expression is “national does not equal state”. He also stumbled badly in the transition (i.e. debates).
The question is whether one or both can recover. Cain, of course, still can affect his drop point, which will determine how much he needs to recover. Perry has a big pit to climb out of.

How many times have I asked Cain supporters this question?
retire05 Friday, November 4th at 9:37PM EST (link)What in Herman Cain’s history tells you how he will govern?
I get answers like; go to his web site, he is a Christian, he’s been a success in business, yada, yada, yada. None of those things really answer the question.
But what we have learned about Herman Cain through all this broo-haha is that he is a man who does not deal with adversity very well. From his lack of organization in his own campaign (conflicting responses from Cain and Block), that he got snipy with reporters because he was the story of the day, to his response to Greta when asked why he thought he was rising in the polls; “Because people like me.” Sorry, but that is pure arrogance on Cain’s part.
Cain has tried to brush off stupid statements by saying America needs to learn to take a joke. Unfortunately, he is not going to be able to tell people like Putin to learn to take a joke, nor is he going to be able to rely on his likablity when it comes to foreign affairs. Obama thought that would work for him, and now the entire Middle East is about to blow up. Also unfortunate is that Obama is going to leave the next president to deal with the mess he has created. Cain has neither the temperment, or the experience to deal with that.
It’s quite easy to say what you are going to do; close Gitmo, totally end the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, etc, but it is another thing to actually do those things and to do what you say you are going to do in goverment requires at least a minimum knowledge of how the sausage is made.

MikeG (Diary) Saturday, November 5th at 9:56AM EST (link)Right on. That is my main objection to Herman Cain, even more than the abysmal 9-9-9 tax plan: the man has ZERO experience or demonstrated knowledge concerning foreign and military affairs. Also, I don’t see how someone who lacks any experience at successfully politicking and enacting a legislative agenda can expect to usher serious conservative reform legislation through Congress. With his background as a CEO, Cain is used to ruling by fiat, not in cooperation with a co-equal branch of government. That doesn’t work when you are president, nor should it. Obama’s retreat to executive orders and unelected czars to further his agenda has rightly been denounced as undemocratic. I worry that a politically stymied President Cain would be tempted to go down a similar path.
Right you are.
jackdaniels11 Sunday, November 6th at 9:02PM EST (link)Cain can promise sweet corn and brand-new cars while he’s campaigning. He can tell the pro-life voters “I’m with you” and tell the pro-choice voters “I have your interests at heart.”
He can promise to cut everyone’s taxes down to zero, raise everyone’s wages and put every unemployed person in a great job.
He can promise to electrify the border fence, throw moat-gators behind it and deport every last illegal who survives his Maginot Line.
But actual civil governance is something that he does not have on his resume. His candidacy this year would be every bit as weak as Steve Forbes’ candidacy would have been in 2000.
For a history lesson in the only time one of the top two candidates in the general election was someone with zero experience as either a military leader or an elected official, go to: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/United_States_presidential_election,_1872
Note Horace Greeley’s lack of leadership experience in the public sector and also his landslide loss in the presidential election.
Voters couldn’t take him seriously due to his lack of a resume and other issues.

It’s not going to happen in a matter of days, as the so-called “conservative” media hopes to frame it by saying, “See? People still stand by him!” Let’s let reality take its course.

Redmymind...

Do you think this will come down to a two way race between Romney and Perry??
Let me know…
Viva Perry!!
It really has been Perry and Romney all along
redmymind (Diary) Saturday, November 5th at 12:06PM EST (link)Some in the media have begrudgingly made vague references to it, but the most obvious tell-tale signs:
Object of ALL of Romney’s attack ads: PERRY
Object of ALL of Cain’s “rush to judgment” attacks: PERRY
As “calculating” as Romney is, he wouldn’t be wasting his money on hit-job robocalls and attack ads on Perry if he didn’t think Perry was his chief threat.
Romney’s general uncanny, “forgiving” silence even at the face of mild swipes against him on the part of Cain is most certainly a strategy of “convenience,” much like his alleged conservatism, in order to keep Cain afloat and Perry at a distance.
As for Cain, he knows darn well that there is only one oxygen tank and that Perry is about to grab it. Hence Cain’s desperate attacks and cheap-shots again him.
Cain has peaked and is on the decline. The sexual harassment issue is not over by a far stretch, and he’s now facing FEC rule violation charges regarding the receipt of funding for his campaign from a non-profit organization.
The sex scandal and the extremely infantile manner in which he responded to it points to a serious moral/characterological deficit that will sink in with the folks in due course.
The reported FEC violation, if confirmed to be true, will show folks just how Cain does business when no one is looking.
Yes, there are die-hard supporters of Cain who care not to engage in a level of “analysis” beyond the sheepish knee-jerk reaction, doing what they are shamed into doing by the likes of Rush, Hannity, and Levin, but they will be a laughable minority as reality sinks in and Mr. Cain slips up, walks back, and tantrums in front of the world as usual.
Rule of thumb: steer clear of candidates the libs and our enemies around the world would just LOVE to see nominated.

jackdaniels11 Sunday, November 6th at 9:05PM EST (link)I don’t. I thought that Cain’s inconsistent response to the scandal would cause the voters who fled from Perry to Cain in October to flee back to Perry. Seems like they are split between: (1) Sticking with Cain on the assumption that the allegations are all false or mere smoke, (2) moving to Gingrich, (3) remaining undecided until a non-LDS candidate breaks from the pack by getting close to second place in a few polls.

I didn't know you wrote so well, Tbone.
westcoastpatriette (Diary) Friday, November 4th at 10:53PM EST (link)And this is a brilliant piece.
We are currently suffering from electing–as you stated–the most unethical person ever to preside in the White House. It is to our shame as a country that we could be so negligent in electing a man who so superficially promised us “change”.
It taught me a lesson about the importance of thoroughly vetting anyone who desires to run for the Presidency. And it is not a popularity contest akin to American Idol.
In other words, there is too much at stake to overlook the flaws that we are seeing in Cain at this point in time. I could not do a better job than you have done of fairly depicting them.
I only hope people are sober enough to consider what you have written before they make up their minds about Cain. Nice guy, great business savvy, great speaker and personality–but all of those things do not qualify him for the office of the Presidency and all it entails.
I also don’t think he could survive the savage beating he would take against Obama.
Thank you for taking the time and risking the displeasure of Cain’s supporters to lay out the naked truth. Time for some serious vetting by all of us.
Recommended, but I declared for Cain.

Blaming Perry was bad.
By the way, it’s not that Clinton proved that a sleazeball could have an effective presidency despite his sleaze; it’s that he could have been so much more effective without it.
And Herman Cain is not a sleazeball. He’s a guy who doesn’t see the harm in a double entrendre because he doesn’t think that way, and doesn’t intend his speech as such.

gator_hoo (Diary) Saturday, November 5th at 6:17PM EST (link)Considering Cain’s responses have conflicted with one another and known facts (denying that there were any allegations; then knew of the allegations, but not any settlements; then saying he knew about the settlements and the behavior causing them, and saying they were only for a few months salary when neither was for a few months salary, etc.) I am intrigued by your answer that “honesty is all he needed.”
Rush, Hannity, Levin, Romney, Cain, Newt
redmymind (Diary) Saturday, November 5th at 1:51AM EST (link)The issue is not so much finding the “anti-Romney” candidate as much as finding the “anti-Perry” candidate, with these “conservative out of convenience” talk show hosts caving into the left’s ridiculously caricatured presentation of the Perry campaign.
With their compulsive, unconditional defense of Cain over the radio waves, I’ve sadly had to tune into MSNBC and CNN just to hear an opposing view. I’d love to see them walk back their desperate propaganda campaign in the event one of these women does turn up and tell all.
If they REALLY thought Cain could think and speak for himself, they wouldn’t be so “overprotective” of him–cramming down words over the air waves on his behalf. The truth is, they know Cain to be inept, incoherent, and infantile when pressed hard enough. Evidently, they don’t think Cain’s smart enough to answer for himself.
I do find it amusing that Rush is engaging in the same type
Tbone (Diary) Saturday, November 5th at 9:53AM EST (link)of apologia for Cain that his criticism of which concerning the ” because he is black”, pass given to McNabb as a quarterback got Rush fired from Monday Night Football.
Envisioning when all that is Left is the Right.
Tbone
redmymind (Diary) Saturday, November 5th at 12:30PM EST (link)I must admit, I did not expect such a bizzare defensive encampment around Cain from these hosts I normally enjoy listening to, tempting me to think that they could be bought or pressured into “group think.” As for Rush, you would think he’d have learned from the McNabb incident. Disappointing.
As for Ann Coulter’s “our Blacks are better than their Blacks” statement? . . . Yikes!
I think it is a combination of two things
gator_hoo (Diary) Saturday, November 5th at 6:23PM EST (link)1) Cain has a lot of support among Rush’s listeners, I think we have all seen that the support is pretty passionate as well. I think Rush is concerned saying anything negative about Cain will cause him to lose listeners; I don’t know if he has realized that he is gone so far on the other side that he is losing listeners who don’t support Cain.
2) Due to the history of media smear jobs and Cain’s initial outright denial, Rush and the other hosts went out with the attitude that the story had no credibility. Then Cain’s answers started changing, and he started acknowledging some stuff that he had denied earlier. It is hard for radio hosts to switch positions once they have taken one, and so they have had to take some tortured positions in order to not be inconsistent with their initial full on support of Cain.
Very interesting, gator_hoo
redmymind (Diary) Saturday, November 5th at 9:45PM EST (link)I didn’t think about it from that angle. I guess there’s always that risk of someone “stellar” turning into a potential liability.
Don't blame Cain, Blame his Supporters
Scope (Diary) Saturday, November 5th at 10:09AM EST (link)Tbone, here is an article which nicely coincides with your sentiments that Cain is not qualified for the highest office in the land, but his supporters refuse to believe that.
For the longest time, we saw Obama’s poll numbers crater on his handling of the economy, and on many of his other policy positions. What didn’t crater, and I haven’t seen any current polling, was his polling numbers on his likability. In other words, the presidency is now nothing more than who can win the Mr/Ms Congeniality contest, and be damned with their qualifications.
Scope you may have unintentionally hit the nail on the head.
jimmyg Saturday, November 5th at 10:32AM EST (link)We have several flawed candidates running against a flawed president. It well may come down to a likability contest.
We don't need to trade one "likable" failure
izoneguy (Diary) Saturday, November 5th at 10:39AM EST (link)for another….
Cain’s 999 will raise taxes for the majority of Americans.
I could care less if he has sex with 999 women….
It’s Cain’s policies and positions that don’t work.
The point cannot be made often enough: Modern liberalism, as embodied in the Obama presidency, is the defender of the status quo. And the status quo is a road to economic ruin. Political forces cannot redistribute the wealth that the economic system does not produce.
Izoneguy, my comment is not about one candidate, its about all the candidates
jimmyg Saturday, November 5th at 11:11AM EST (link)You do not like Cain, I get that, he is a flawed candidate. My point is so are the others, and how did we get to this position in a primary race where we are looking at the least flawed candidate. My point is that all of the candidates are flawed. It may come down to which candidate is seen as the least fodder for late night comedians.

Mike Pence and Paul Ryan. Jindal also imminently qualified.
gracie (Diary) Saturday, November 5th at 1:25PM EST (link)I get it Rubio is not ready and we need him in the Senate.
I get it Rand Paul cannot run because of his dad.
I get it that Bobby Jindal wants to finish his work in Louisana but his resume blows anybody elses’ out of the water as far as young guns.
At first I was fairly happy with our field until they started imploding. Cain is the worst possible choice for me among the top four for the reasons T-bone said and right to return, Gitmo, 999, foreign affairs.
So now everyone is trying to figure out who to settle on; who is electable. I am perfectly happy with Rick Perry, epecially given his recent speeches and interviews. But so many are not!
acat, after his radio interview last night Romney is going to shout, “amnesty!” I thought it was gutsy of him to admit we have to do something with 12 million after the border is closed…notice no one will ever go there. I love it he will state his beliefs on Iran. Afraid when the amnesty! shouting starts that is all anyone will hear after that..
Since the field is effectively closed..
acat (Diary) Saturday, November 5th at 1:34PM EST (link)and since I don’t see a way for Newt Gingrich to really take off, this cat will stand by his prediction that the anti-Romney people – who will end up somewhere between 66% and 75% of GOP primary voters – will coalesce around Perry after a Thansgiving-and-Christmas re-think.
Perry has been giving great interviews, he’s released proposals that are solid and workable, and if there were dirt, Karl Rove would have released it by now. (Keep in mind that Rove was involved in the KBH run against Perry, which is why the oppo dumps on Perry started so quickly… they were recycled)
As for Amnesty!, while I’ll agree that there needs to be a discussion about the mix of amnesty and deportation for those here illegally, I maintain that the correct time for that discussion is after the border is effectively sealed.
Perry has taken steps in that direction – the Texas Rangers are doing the enforcement and interdiction that the ICE is *supposed* to do (Texans are paying for border protection twice!) – and his favoring active (boots) protection over passive (fence) protection also resonates.
We’ll see how it plays out, but .. at this point I’ll favor Perry for a comeback win over Romney and Cain.

I would love to have seen Mike Pence
Scope (Diary) Saturday, November 5th at 12:38PM EST (link)run for the presidency rather than as Gov. in IN. Many had major problems with him because he was in the US House, and needed to have more experience as a Gov. or what have you. He had a great Immigration plan, but some even had a problem with that because it had a guest worker provision, even though he proposed having the illegals go home, and then apply to come back much sooner than waiting the years it currently takes to gain a legal pass into the US. He consistently voted conservative, even when his votes weren’t with the party, and popular. He had a record to go by. The biggest complaint I remember hearing though was that he didn’t have enough experience, even though he had much more experience than Cain. Pence worked with the fractious D’s and R’s that Cain would have to work with. Cain worked in the private sector, including time as a Washington lobbyist.
Good point, Scope. However, Pence is 52, so will be 60 in 2020...

I agree that Pence will make a tremendous President, I think the same of Marco Rubio. I don’t see why we need to push their careers along so fast, though.
Let’s face it, one of the reasons our current President hasn’t managed to succeed at his stated goals is he lacks executive experience. Think about how much more effective Obama would have been like after running a State for 4 years….

Further, unless I’m greatly mistaken, the conservative surge toward Team McCain when he named Palin as his veep predates the Tea Party ..
There is an element of “American Idol” (or “Star Search”) to politics, but that’s been the case since the Nixon-Kennedy debates, where Nixon won in polls of radio listeners, but Kennedy won in polls of TV watchers. It’s also one reason why Reagan was so effective, he knew how to use the media.
Just to point this out, Cain’s been on the radio for quite a while, he knows how to communicate, and his message is compelling and optimistic. (this is another reason I like Pence, by the way…like Cain and Reagan, he understands how to use mass media…)

Pepper Steak with Peppers and Onion served over Rice
gekster (Diary) Sunday, November 6th at 2:57AM EST (link)Ingredients: 1 lb top round beef
4 tsp plus 3 tbsp low-sodium soy sauce
1 tbsp rice wine
3 tsp cornstarch
1 tbsp water
5 tsp Cooking Oil
1 large onion, sliced into thin strips
1 bell pepper, sliced into thin strips
1/2 tsp black pepper
Pinch of crushed red pepper flakes (optional)
4 cups cooked white rice
* Add 3 more grams of fiber to this dish by using brown rice instead of white.
1:
Slice the meat into thin slices along the grain. Cut each strip across the grain about 1-inch long so that you have small thin slices. Place in a bowl and add 4 teaspoons of soy sauce, 1 tablespoon of rice wine, 1-teaspoon cornstarch, and black pepper.
2:
In a small bowl, mix 3 tablespoons soy sauce, 1-tablespoon water and 2 teaspoons cornstarch. Set aside.
3:
Heat a wok on high heat. When the wok is very hot, swirl in 1 tablespoon of Cooking Oil.
4:
When oil is hot, add the beef, spreading evenly in the wok.
5:
Cook undisturbed for about 20 seconds, letting the beef brown.
6:
Using a spatula, stir the meat, cooking another 2 minutes. Transfer to a plate.
7:
Add remaining tablespoon of Cooking Oil to the wok. Add peppers and onions, and cook about 2 minutes, or until tender-crisp.
8:
Return beef to the wok, add the sauce and red pepper flakes and stir-fry about 30 seconds or until slightly thickened.
9:
Serve over cooked rice.

Actually, the Tea Party is split between
runner12 (Diary) Saturday, November 5th at 1:00PM EST (link)Cain and Perry. I think what we are seeing is the popularity contest mentality emerging. The Tea Party people who are wise know that no one man is going to “fix” this country. We realize that it is “We the People” that will change Washington and do not rely on someone to “save” us. If we think that our job is finished when we elect an (R) in office, we are extremely naive. Electing a Republican will stop the downward spiral, but it will take all of us to right the ship.
We need to elect true conservatives in the House, Senate, and to the Presidency and rid our own party of RINO’s and squishes or make them so inconsequential they have no power or influence. This does not mean that we elect any yahoo that comes along spouting what we want to hear. If we do that, our movement will become easily hijacked by opportunists.
I will also add that electing someone who is an “anti-establishment politician” does not mean electing someone who is not qualified for the job. That may be even worse than electing an establishment politician, in my mind.
Good points all runner
Scope (Diary) Saturday, November 5th at 1:54PM EST (link)It is critical that we get the biggest majorities in the House and Senate that we possibly can. We cannot replace every sitting squish all at once, some of the worst squishes in the Senate are not up for re-election. I think it is a pretty sure thing that those like Boehner and Cantor will be going back to Wash. I just don’t want them in any leadership positions, where they can appoint some committee heads like Fred Upton that has already let us down in the past.
I am not knocking all of the Tea Party. I didn’t mean to imply that. I am referring to those that have called for primary candidates to replace those like Allan West, and some others. We all know that the perfect presidential candidate doesn’t exist, and that applies to the House and Senate members as well. When some groups, going under the banner of the Tea Party, want to keep replacing every representative for every bad vote they make, they will only ever be happy when they get the perfect robot to send to Washington that they can pre-program.
There is a large faction of Tea Party people who support Ron Paul and/or his policies and positions in full. That’s just an unfortunate fact.

Their manner of posting is reminiscent of the Paulbots. It appears to me that Cain has tried to move over to a more libertarian area with some of his positions, hence his confusing statements on abortion, particularly when talking to John Stossel, a self-defined libertarian. Uncle Ronnie has obviously angered some of his supporters with his strong pro-life talk in Iowa, and his newly found position being now against a border fence.

jrmax13 Sunday, November 6th at 5:32AM EST (link)From the above post “they always have to go hijack something because they can’t get a toe-hold on their own merits – and they damned well know it! Doesn’t that smack of a person who knows full well that they are wrong…”
Is it not true that PerryPhiles tend for project their own weaknesses and past failures on any target handy ? Excellent recap of your most recent reason
SKully (Diary) Saturday, November 5th at 1:30PM EST (link)for not supporting Herman Cain, TBone. I am also very glad to see that you agree with Leon’s recent posts regarding unsubstantiated accusations.
I have been disgusted by some recent posts here at Redstate, calling for Cain to drop out, and glad you did not call for it here. That would be the WORST possible scenario right now. The left is trying desperately to knock him out. Giving in here would just line the next candidate up to more innuendos.
“Do not separate text from historical background. If you do, you will have perverted and subverted the Constitution, which can only end in a distorted, bastardized form of illegitimate government.” James Madison
Something has been nagging at me about Herman Cain's response to Sexual Harassment issue and I figured out today what it was. I KNOW he lied.
tricianc (Diary) Saturday, November 5th at 10:46PM EST (link)It’s not about the allegations themselves as right now there’s no way to prove or disprove them. I also won’t go into all of the lies Herman Cain told about the whole situation. However, I will tell you something has been nagging at me and I figured out today what it was.
I knew something was bothering me about Herman Cain and the sexual harassment allegations. HE LIED. See below:
There are two things and they prove he lied.
When Mr. Cain came out to speak about the allegations, he only ever mentioned (“recalled”) one woman, over and over. We knew there were two that made allegations and received settlements because that’s what was reported. However, like I said, Mr. Cain only spoke of one woman and one “possible” allegation.
Here’s the problem with that:
The woman whose lawyer spoke for her, her allegations and settlement were in 1999. “The attorney for one of the women who accused Herman Cain of sexual harassment said Friday that the then-National Restaurant Association CEO engaged in “inappropriate behavior” and “unwanted advances” that led to a cash payout in 1999.” http://www.politico.com/news/stories/1111/67655.html
The National Restaurant Association would never have approved the statement if it had the incorrect information such as the year of the complaint and settlement: 1999. Additionally the statement the National Restaurant Association released said: “Mr. Herman Cain disputed the allegations in the complaint.”
Therefore, we know from the NRA’s statement that he KNEW about the 2nd woman’s allegations and the details of them from 1999 as they said he disputed it. Additionally, In his response after the woman’s lawyer spoke and the NRA posted their statement, J D Gordon even mentioned that the NRA said Herman disputed the allegations.
So Mr. Cain WAS aware of the allegations and the details of such of the woman in 1999.
However, she was the SECOND woman which is the one that lives in Maryland.
The FIRST woman left the NRA and received her settlement in 1998. “The woman, who now works in New Jersey, left the NRA in May 1998, shortly
after the incident — under an agreement that paid her one-year’s salary, in the mid-$30,000s, sources said. ”
http://www.politico.com/news/stories/1111/67581.html
So, thus far, we know from the NRA’s statement that he KNEW about the 2nd woman’s allegations from 1999 as they said he disputed it.
He had to have also known about the other woman’s allegations and settlement in 1998 too. It is beyond the realm of reason that he could not have. Certainly if they told him the allegations in 1999, they would have also conferred or asked him about allegations the first woman made too.
This also backs that up:
Mr. Cain said he told his wife in 1999. “I told my wife about this in 1999 and I’ve got nothing to hide,” http://www.outsidethebeltway.com/herman-cain-changes-subject-blames-perry-campaign-for-leak/
But why didn’t he tell her in 1998 when the first woman made allegations and got a settlement?
But let’s say he meant to say he told his wife in 1998. I don’t believe he did though. I believe this was a calculated, political misdirection.
Also, let’s say he really did tell her in 1999. Why would you not tell her in 1998 about those allegations in the year they happened? If my spouse told me in 1999 about an incident in 1999 and then also told me about the one in 1998 at the same time, I would have to wonder why he didn’t tell me in 1998.
In 1999, he had to tell her at that point because he left the NRA in 1999.
He also couldn’t come out and tell us he told her in 1998 as it would redirect us to the incident that year and we’d know there were two women and that he knew of both of their allegations, details of the complaint, and settlements.
He’s counting on us knowing only part of the story, the part which is of his words.
tricianc, there is a MAJOR problem with your charge against Cain
llorta Saturday, November 5th at 10:56PM EST (link)…you assume that when Cain speaks, he is trying to convey coherent thoughts.
That isn’t his style.
Nice try though.
And, don't forget that...
clintonformccain Saturday, November 5th at 11:54PM EST (link)he was taken out of context!
You're funny
tricianc (Diary) Sunday, November 6th at 12:22AM EST (link)LOL

Wow
nathanalbright (Diary) Saturday, November 5th at 11:05PM EST (link)That’s definitely some sound exegetical analysis. Are you sure you’re not a biblical scholar or some related field?
OK, but many of us knew immediately that Cain lied.
Tbone (Diary) Saturday, November 5th at 11:40PM EST (link)The NRA would not have entered into any settlement concerning a C level executive without thoroughly questioning him about the allegations. He would then have to be informed that the settlement contained a confidentiality clause because that confidentiality requirement would be extended to the executive via the confidentiality clause in his own employment agreement that would even survive his separation from the Association.
This is why I call Cain a boldfaced liar and a scumbag.
Envisioning when all that is Left is the Right.
I knew immediately too
tricianc (Diary) Sunday, November 6th at 12:31AM EST (link)I’m with you there. I knew. Others knew. I can’t understand why many are willing to overlook, especially when you had that on top of all his other gaffes and flip flops.
Especially telling is when the Cain camp said they didn’t want the women to speak out. I understand why, of course. But do we want a President who doesn’t want someone to speak about allegations? We have that President right now. He’s even rejected a recent subpeona.
Cain was in the race as the “Problem Solver.” He sure didn’t do a good job on the one big problem he was handed.
BTW, Tbone thank you for writing exactly what many of us have been thinking. Great job on it too!
tricianc, you missed one important part
retire05 Sunday, November 6th at 12:49AM EST (link)It has been reported that Woman #2 filed her charges against Herman Cain in July, 1999. It has also been reported that Herman Cain left the National Restaurant Association in July, 1999, before his contract was up with the organization, citing “personal reasons” for his early departure.
Coincidence? Nah, don’t think so.

retire05, I agree
tricianc (Diary) Sunday, November 6th at 11:51AM EST (link)I agree with you that I believe he left over this.
The NRA was willing to overlook the first one in 1998 but then when the 2nd one came in 1999, they couldn’t any longer. And it’s not just the 2nd allegations, it was well known among the employees this was going on and was for some time.
This was becoming a pattern they could no longer endure nor afford.
The purpose of my post was to show that Cain was outright lying and that he had to have known about BOTH allegations and settlements. Thanks for adding this to it.
question please retire05
tricianc (Diary) Sunday, November 6th at 12:02PM EST (link)But how do we get this out to the public who is only hearing Cain’s side? Or is it fruitless? It probably is fruitless to convince his staunch supporters but not to those who are on the fence.
The conservative talk show media is being disingeneous and doing a disservice to the voters by not discussing the discrepancies, obfuscations and outright lies in his remarks If they laid it out chronologically and and truthfully like we did, others would see it too.
They are only wailing on the Liberal media and the race card. The truth of that matter is it has nothing to do with race. Conservatives made it about race. The MSM would have done this story on any one of our candidates even the white pasty guy, the family man and the pretty woman. I think it’s disgusting that our side is playing the race card. It seems Cain is using this as a diversion: He wants to be judged on the color of his skin and obviously not on the content of his character.
There is logic and reasoning that he lied. We know, as we are much more intuned politically than most everyday people.
tricianc, therein lies the problem
retire05 Sunday, November 6th at 12:38PM EST (link)you can’t convince the die hard Cain supports of his warts.
We have become, unfortunately, a nation with two kinds of voters; political junkies, like me, who will research a candidate’s history, evaluate that history in comparison to their values and standards, and try to pick the candidate that best emulates what they believe, and those voters who are star-struck and who vote based on nothing but emotion. The second type of voter was best exhibited in 2008. These voters do not care what a candidate’s qualifications are, they care if he/she would do well on American Idol. Herman Cain also throws another demention into this race; his race.
I have been told by fellow Tea Partiers that they support Herman Cain because the left cannot go after him on race. I point out that supporting someone because they are black is just as wrong as being against someone because they are black. It falls on deaf ears. They love what he says, even though most of the time he has his foot in his mouth.
Yes, conservative talk show hosts, and the only news network considered to be right leaning, have come out in defence of Cain. I warrant it is because they fear being labeled “racist” if they don’t. That is an accusation that has been slung at Republicans since the days of FDR. And it has, for the most part, worked with an unlearned minority population. FDR knew that tactic worked with the Irish and Italians in the late 19th and early 20th century, so he employed it.
Cain, unlike J.C. Watts, Tim Scott or Allen West, consistantly throws in a little dig about being a “black” conservative. Check the campaigns of the other three and you won’t find that. It is a new tactic for black Republicans that Cain is deploying. Not one that I think, in the end, will serve him well.
For those on the fence, don’t try to create an opinion for them. Give them facts, provable facts, not trying to influence them one way or another, and let them chew on it. Sometime you just have to let something marinate before it is ready.

Did Cain
txpat Sunday, November 6th at 12:42PM EST (link)Go to work right after he left the restaurant association?
I’m curious to down time between jobs.
Returned to Nebraska
clintonformccain Sunday, November 6th at 1:05PM EST (link)Cain returnd to Neb for one year, then moved to Atlanta. At some point he started his motivational speaking gig.
The questions I have are whether he was forced out of the NRA as a result of the multiple sexual harrasment allegations.
Thanks Nathan

It’s both wonderful and sad that everyday citizens researchers, for whom this is not their vocation and who also have a full-time job or activity elsewhere, do a better job at researching candidates than the professionals who get paid big bucks to do this.
It’s more honest, deeper, and more informative than the talking heads that just read scripts put before them.

Feeding into the Feeding Frenzy!
morstar150 (Diary) Wednesday, November 9th at 3:20PM EST (link)Why? I don’t get it.
Why aren’t we calling out the media on making this media created storm front page, top story, only story Kill Off Herman Cain witch hunt.
Yesterday, Eric Holder REFUSED to apologize to the family of the deceased Border Agent killed by a gun he himself authorized to be sent to drug dealers, and then denied knowing about what he had already read.
THAT IS FRONT PAGE NEWS!!! If he was a Republican the headline would read. Attorney General kills border agent and then mocks the grieving family.
The media makes me sick.
