Biggest miscalculation yet?

With his presidency losing so much altitude that he’s practically underground now, Captain B+ is about to ‘reconnect with’ the voting public by means of a Palin-style bus tour. Yes, I know – I’ll leave discussion of the irony of the Leftist in Chief following HER lead, of all people, to someone else. What I want to suggest is, what if the notion that this will actually help him politically turns out to be a bigger rookie mistake than even he has made to date?

President Urkel’s has unquestionably been the most scripted and stage managed presidency America has ever seen. With the entire press in his pocket to a degree never before known, the visuals have always been whatever he needed them to be. Need a cheering crowd? Bring one in. Need protesters not to be seen? The film never hits the air. An obviously necessary component of this strategy has always been for the young man to stay relatively close to his centers of power. It can only be desperation driving him to now throw that to the wind.

This trip will take the president deep into what was already enemy territory — the heartland. That he never thought this was necessary before, let alone an astute move, is evidenced by the fact that he’s never tried it. In the 3 years since he was installed, he has
yet to visit several of the places this trip would have to take him. And with even his officially admitted-to numbers at the bottom of the 40s, I really don’t think absence has made heartland hearts grow fonder than they had been in 2008.

Bus tour visits to small towns in Middle America have a certain feel — the point is to look folksy, regular, connected to the common man. That this doesn’t exactly come easy to the president is shown by the fact that his people so often find themselves trying to manufacture it by bringing their own extras to play the crowd. But this will be no blue state street theater. There are real mid-westerners out there in the mid-west. If Team Zero tries to bring its own cast of extras with it to be the crowds where he stops, well… let’s just say it will be a serious test to the ability of the national media to control the message they have been rapidly losing their grip on for the last 3 years. Buses full of people are not exactly inconspicuous, and every small town has local news people who want to get their faces out there nationally on a big story.

Personally, in his position at this point, with the Team 6 tragedy, the credit downgrade, and everything else, I think there could scarcely be a worse time for him to try to show his face in the heartland. It is hard to fathom the combined desperation and bankrupcy of ideas that would lead him to now give it a try. This may be shaping up to be the biggest PR catastrophe at least since the Ceausescu regime went the way of the dodo. It might just be the beginning of the end.

Damage Control?

My initial impressions on this is that Obama is now scrambling for votes.  I can’t see him being forgiven by the majority of traditional heartland voters.  With all the castigation coming our way, nothing will change our minds about these demagogues.

and the reaction of the midwest, especially farm country, is likely to be as you say, then … why would he do this?

It could be a rookie mistake, Occam says that’s most likely, but .. what if he’s trying to firm up his vote in the cities by showing how “those people” are against him? What if he – or his handlers – want some shots of him being heckled and rejected by “the Tea Partiers” going into 2012?

While tempting to assume Obama is making an amateur mistake, let’s remember that his handlers aren’t amateurs….

Well, sure, but...

Remember that the other day, Biden said 60% of the country was delusional. He didn’t use the number, but the people he described are 60+% of the country. “Those people”, as you put it, are also 60+%. Remember the Bush map? If you’re right, and this is a ploy to firm up the people that are NOT in the heartland, you could call it “The ‘Most of America is Crazy’ Bus Tour”. Yeah, THAT’S good politics…

If his people aren’t amateurs, and THAT’S their sober opinion of what their best shot is, all I can say is, no wonder Hollywood apparently thinks that lots of money also won’t be enough — they need to have a hagiography ready to go for October 2012.

The interesting thing on that is, it was going to be a hagiography on what a great job he did sending Team 6 to get Bin Laden. And now look what happened to them. You’d think that intelligent Obama supporters in Hollywood (I know, I know…) wouldn’t want to bring that up at this point.

I don’t think it matters anymore that his handlers aren’t amateurs. When you’re the guy who lost our triple-A rating, there are no more correct campaign decisions.

There are other possibilities...

Perhaps he’s had a “road to damascus” moment and wants to *really* see the country for the first time.

Perhaps his handlers have internal polling that shows him with anti-coattails, suppressing turnout and pushing Dems into a decades-long minority status .. but can’t convince him to not seek re-election. So, they put him in front of hostile crowds and hope it cracks the narcicistic shell….

I think he’s done… I am concerned about whether he’ll go quietly. He’s not culturally an American, no matter what’s on his birth certificate, and the peaceful transfer of power is .. perhaps not uniquely American, but certainly unusual in the rest of the world.

Well... there's no disproving any of that...

Anything is possible. Some things are less likely than others, though, and Urkel having a road to damascus is not a point on the list I would expect to get down to in a dozen lifetimes.

Anyone’s speculation as to motive is at least as good as mine, but to me it seems more likely that, narcissist to the end that he is, he is the last man anywhere who STILL believes he has ‘mad communication skillz’. I say he actually believes he can still help his own cause. Occam, as you said. And, really – what could be more in keeping with everything else we’ve seen from the guy?

Then again, if you were in his spot, could you think of a better plan? What else is he going to do, lower taxes and let the US drill, so the economy can grow?

he gets knocked completely off the ass. Hillary! gets drafted as a replacement.

He’ll go from one liberal oasis to another…… like a frog hopping from lily pad to lily pad.
This should make the ‘town vs gown’ contrast even more distinct, and feed resentment against tax-payer supported academia.
More division amongst the people.
BO is a walking divisive disaster.

Or, like the frog in that "Frogger" video game...

He gets run over by the first truck he should’ve spotted when he pauses to wait for the next pad to float along.

Not literally, of course, but the electoral equivalent when he keeps putting on that telepromter speech with the yokels who’re too busy keeping their heads above water because of the regs imposed by all those “czars” he had appointed back in ’09-’10.  I’d love to see this blow up in his face, and those of the backers in the intelligensia, glitterati, and political aristocracy who think they’re so much smarter than we.

The Road to ???

chbroussard (Diary) Tuesday, August 9th at 9:02AM EST (link)

This brings to mind the old Bob Hope/Bing Crosby (for those of us old enough to remember) “road” movies…Road to Morocco, Road to Hong Kong, etc. These shows were fun to watch but pretty silly. I’ll be surprised if Obama’s “road” show isn’t fun to watch and pretty silly too. As has become the MO for this boy-child, when things get tough, he leaves town. At least this time he’s staying in-country.

Be prepared for the LS media to really put a spin on this. I fully expect inflated numbers of attendees and lots of close-up shots, but no panning of the crowds.

That’s the ticket, Obama. Leave town, waste more taxpayer dollars, get on the stump and say absolutely nothing. Some things never change.
