Michigan moms and dads, are you ready for Tuesday? Well, are you? Or maybe more importantly, is your eight year old ready? This coming Tuesday Michigan's fancy new booster seat regulation goes into effect and Junior had better be buckled up in a shiny new piece of vinyl or the Michigan State Police will hunt you down. "Even at night." Click it or ticket, kid. You don't want to cost mom and dad $65 bucks, do you?

Here's the skinny on the latest Michigan unemployment numbers. Numbers Dan Dickerson and Jim Price might refer to as "crooked."
But first, allow me to congratulate Andy Dillon, Mark Schauer, Jennifer Granholm, John Cherry, Bob Dean, Mary Valentine, Mike Simpson, Marty Griffin, Kate Ebli and the whole billion-dollar-plus tax hike team on a job well done. We figured they were trying to kill the economy when they raised taxes by a full 10 figures last year and sure enough, we're bleeding out pretty good right now.
So, without further ado...

Fewer taxes equals more jobs. It's not rocket science and even the current crop of Democrats in Lansing, the biggest tax hikers in the state's history regularly admit it these days. Including today. They just approved tax breaks and credits for a handful of projects the administration proudly claims will "create" 3,900 jobs. (The list of projects and tax breaks is available HERE.)

Hey, Hey, Hockeytown! Congratulations to the Wings and all of the fans who've been with the team all year! What a last couple of games. Wow. Ozzie's the man and would have been my choice for the Con Smythe but you can't argue with Hank.
And in the immortal words of the great Mike Shanahan, "offseason starts tomorrow because (when we come back) we're going for two!"
Now, at the risk of moving too quickly from euphoria to despair, there's news all over the wires this morning illustrating that Lansing, the Governor and far more than half the students in Detroit either haven't learned or just plain refuse to try.
Proving that you can teach a liberal government new tricks provided each one comes with it's own tax or fee, the Lansing State Journal reports this morning that residents in the Capitol City are about to see over a half-million dollars swiped out of their pockets and shoved into the big-government trough at City Hall. Put succinctly:
Lansing is expecting to raise $520,000 for its $199.3 million 2008-09 budget by increasing existing fees and creating new ones.
Best, just about all of the new fees either directly targets job providers or low / no wage earners relying on City services. And folks grieving the loss of a loved one. Because if there's anyone who needs picking on it's those left behind after tragedy.
If you can't afford your own home and you're forced to rent a room in a multi-family house? You'll be paying more. Can't afford fancy after school activities for your kids and rely on City athletic programs? You'll pay more. Need to bury a loved one? Get ready to pay more.
Lansing is raising taxes on each of the following:

Posted at 8:23am on Jun. 2, 2008 Michigan only gets 50% of a vote but we may still get 100% of the shaft!
By RightMichigan.com
Big weekend in Michigan Presidential politics followed by a big week in Michigan politics period. Of course the story on everyone's mind Saturday and Sunday was the DNC's decision to seat Michigan's convention delegates after stripping them of half their voting power. It was a move that had Obama's folks pleased as punch and Hillary Clinton's supporters seeing red. Seriously. Talk about being treated like second class citizens.
Although hey, on the bright side, at least there's only one of us named Kwame Kilpatrick because the motor city's mayor, a super delegate and Barack supporter is still being completely ignored by the Obama camp, a decision becoming more and more obvious with every visit the candidate makes to Michigan. Which is two, by the way. Two visits in the last year if you count the Oakland County stop he's got planned this week. Two. But I digress. The Lansing State Journal reports:
Kilpatrick's get-out-the-vote operation in Detroit could be key in a hotly competitive state that doesn't know Obama that well, thanks to an agreement by the Democratic candidates not to campaign for the primary.
Obama could use the mayor's enthusiastic support in Detroit, a city of 900,000 where blacks make up more than 80 percent of the city's residents and nearly always vote Democratic.

Every action has an equal and opposite reaction. That's physics. Or some sort of basic high school science (I'll be the first to admit that wasn't my specialty at Ottawa Hills). And I know just enough about it to know that it's true in the natural world. Its often true in everyday life too. It's the reason you don't tug on Superman's cape. Why you do unto others as you'd have them do unto you. Because our actions have consequences. That's what the Tick would call the "karma tornado."

I'm not going to say "I told you so" but I so did. Last week the Michigan House of Representatives began moving the Granholm / Cherry monopolization package and already this morning the Democrats are talking new tax hikes, market manipulation and picking winners and losers.
This morning's peach of a plan comes courtesy of Kathy Angerer, herself no stranger to the idea of raising taxes. Last year it was the income tax and the Michigan Business Tax... this year it's a surcharge on your energy bills.
The Associated Press reports on "energy efficiency":

Tax day is literally now, right around the corner. Like the TV commercials say, it's one stress-packed trip to the post office this April 15th and this year it's more stressful than ever.
All thanks to your friendly neighborhood Democrat State Representatives. Particularly those of you out in the Redford area. Small business owners in Michigan's 17th State House District owe a special debt (pun intended) of gratitude to Speaker Andy Dillon, the man, the myth, the tax hiking legend.

Posted at 1:02am on Apr. 5, 2008 California Democrats seek stealth tax hike
By Neil Stevens
Sacramento Democrats are looking to sneak in a tax increase by abusing a technicality of the California Constitution. Normally, all tax increases require two-thirds of each house of the legislature, which means in practice Republicans can and do veto tax increases.
However now Assemblyman Charles Calderon, Democrat of Los Angeles, wants to amend the state sales tax law in a way that he says will require Apple's customers to pay sales taxes on all iTunes downloads, applying state sales taxes on a service instead of a tangible good for the first time.
Because this proposal redefines and expands an existing term in the state lawbooks, rather than creating a tax increase, Calderon and other tax-hungry Democrats claim that only a simple majority is required, which means the tax hike can sail through the Democratic-controlled legislature without a single Republican vote.
Anything to swipe a buck from our pockets. That's the Democratic Party way.
