Here's the skinny on the latest Michigan unemployment numbers. Numbers Dan Dickerson and Jim Price might refer to as "crooked."
But first, allow me to congratulate Andy Dillon, Mark Schauer, Jennifer Granholm, John Cherry, Bob Dean, Mary Valentine, Mike Simpson, Marty Griffin, Kate Ebli and the whole billion-dollar-plus tax hike team on a job well done. We figured they were trying to kill the economy when they raised taxes by a full 10 figures last year and sure enough, we're bleeding out pretty good right now.
So, without further ado...
National Unemployment Rate (May): 5.5%

We're all involved in politics because we care. We care about issues, we care about debates... we care about people. And most readers of this particular site are involved because that love for people leads them to a certain philosophy that's almost universally at odds with the personalities and philosophy of the American left. So we jump into the fight. We argue, we debate and we wage a war of ideas to try to hold that liberal philosophy at bay.
That can be a tough job here in Michigan. We're a state that's grown bluer and bluer in recent years. And lets be honest... historically the Democrats have been better organized than we are in Michigan. They've got the unions and enough xenophobia, scare tactics and class, race and gender warfare cards up their sleeves to keep certain voting blocks firmly in their camp. So it's always nice when we get a little bit of help battling the left. Especially when that help comes from... the left?
Something must be in the non-diverted water these days because Michigan Democrats are at each other's throats this week. Yesterday we heard the first shot fired when 7th Congressional District Dem candidate Sharon Renier officially challenged a few hundred of Dem front-runner Mark Schauer's petition signatures. Not enough to get him kicked off the ballot but enough to send a signal. She's in this race, she doesn't like the glass ceiling the 7th District Dems built into the race to keep women down and she's going to fight tooth and nail to smash it.
And this morning the good news just keeps coming. The Associated Press reports that the 13th Congressional District Democrat primary might just see a seated incumbent Congresswoman bumped out of Washington DC because she screwed up her petitions.
Waters filed the formal challenge Tuesday with the Wayne County Clerk's office. She also is contesting the signatures of state Sen. Martha Scott, another congressional candidate in the August primary.
State law requires 1,000 valid signatures to place a candidate's name on the ballot.
Former state Rep. Mary Waters has challenged the petition signatures collected by U.S. Rep. Carolyn Cheeks Kilpatrick, who is seeking re-election in the 13th Congressional District.

Last cycle I was blessed with the opportunity to attend a Farm Bureau Congressional candidate interview session down in Hillsdale County. Tim Walber was there, Joe Schwarz and a couple of Democrats. The one woman in the field waited her turn then took the microphone and discussed her position on various ag issues before fielding questions.

Talk about mixed signals. Yesterday while Jennifer Granholm jubilantly touted the promise of several thousand new jobs in the Kalamazoo area made possible by a giant M.E.G.A. tax break and while media outlets across the State highlighted the role reduced taxes played in making the new jobs possible the Democrats were back in Lansing trying to scuttle a tax relief package aimed at aiding thousands of additional businesses across the State.

How's that head feeling this morning? It's rough, isn't it? Almost makes you regret last night. Assuming you remember anything that happened last night in the first place. That much green beer will do that to you. But don't worry, you found some way to make it home safe in the wee hours of the morning and that's something, now isn't it.

Posted at 10:29am on Dec. 18, 2007 MI-07: We knew Dem Mark Schauer was a racist liar... turns out he's a criminal too!

We knew Mark Schauer was a racist. We knew he was a liar. He's been padding his resume with those facts for the last year. But low and behold, turns out he's a lawbreaker too.
When Mark Schauer announced his candidacy for Congress in Michigan's 7th District earlier this year it became awfully plain to see that honesty wasn't the State Senator's strong suit. After all, he'd told the caucus and his constituents only a year earlier that if they sent him to the State Senate in Lansing he would serve his full four years and wouldn't run for higher office.

Late last week I had the opportunity to spend a pretty good chunk of time speaking with the Congressman from Michigan's 7th District, freshman Representative Tim Walberg. We spoke just after his return from an extended overseas trip and covered everything from international affairs to Nancy Pelosi to SCHIP, the tax hike efforts of Michigan Democrats and his upcoming reelection bid against challenger Mark Schauer (despite the minority leader's assurances only two years ago that if elected to the State Senate he'd serve his full term).
