Attorney General Mukasey’s fainting spell at his Federalist Society speech (and his heckling by a member of Washington’s state Supreme Court) have obscured an excellent speech on the Bush Administration’s approach to terrorism and the rule of law. It’s worth pondering in light of recent judicial developments, including from the Second Circuit (the federal appeals court sitting in Manhattan with jurisdiction over New York, Connecticut and Vermont) this morning.
The Rule of Law And The Search For Terror
CO-4: A Microcosm of the 2008 Election Results
The results from Colorado’s U.S. House District 4 are representative of the nation as a whole in many ways.
- The voter demographic is approximately 1/3 each Democrat, Independent, and Republican.
- The less-populated rural areas voted for Republicans, while the heavily-populated urban areas voted for Democrats.
- An unpopular incumbent was replaced by someone from the opposing party, even though (s)he was quite liberal.
At first glance, this would lead one to believe that people no longer believe in the conservative cause of freedom and small government. There are certainly enough pundits, even so-called conservative ones that claim this is the case, and if we want to regain power we must move even farther to the left. The only problem with this is, based on a post-election survey of these same voters, it just isn’t true.
Faith-based conservative federalism

I agree with Dave Sage that culture drives politics; that America has been growing more secular; and that America desperately needs a new Great Awakening outside of politics. However, Republicans are not yet Daniel in a pagan Lions Den. Part two builds on that theme, as well as how we can win back republicans that bolted the party or sat out this election; as well as win over conservative democrats and many secular voters.]
I knew McCain was going to lose when I received an “Obama saves the GOP” e-mail on the Saturday before Election Day from my friend Don Scoggins, the leader of the Frederick Douglass (pictured below) Society, and one of my personal conservative heroes. Don, a conservative black Republican, helped shape my post-2000 conversion to the GOP and has been an inspiration to me, especially as regards my efforts to reach out to minorities with the conservative message.
In explaining his decision to vote for the Democrat, Don expressed an understandable pride in Obama’s skills and symbolic value in affirming a culmination of the Civil Rights Movement. But primarily, Scoggins was voting against a McCain and a GOP that had lost their way.
At first I was shocked, but a week after the election I started to understand how Obama could save us.
57 states, Obama ? Are you referring to the 57 islamic states ?
As we all know, Obama slipped and said 57 states sometime ago and obviously meant 50.
Well, i am no conspiracy theorist; but it looks like the organization of islamic conference has 57 states represented:
http://www.stoptheaclu.com/archives/2008/05/12/obamas-freudian-slip-there-are-57-islamic-states/
I’m quite sure Obama did just slip, but it seems to me that it is not a stretch that he did not.
Why not, 49, 51, over 50, 60 ?
I am simply saying that despite the MSM, the right side of the internet knows his past has some questions and that is our job to keep an eye on him as his policies will now direct the future of this country.
I’d like to submit this “coincidence” as one more thing to be on the lookout for and watch his actions for or against Israel in the future and for that matter, our troops still in the field.
The Perils Of Being The Party Of Ideas
One of the first principles of sales and especially in representing clients in the Real Estate business is to always “under promise, and over deliver”. While I don’t think this simple and common sense principle of sales necessarily applies to politics. It is the starting premise of this article and I’ll explain what I mean when I close this out.
Let’s start with 1994. Most of us remember or have heard about The Contract with America. Yet few remember or discuss the campaign that was carried out prior to the Republican Caucus in the House of Representatives signing this historic contract 2 weeks before the election.
As you all know, Republicans had just been defeated in a landslide election just a year or so prior. The Democrats had complete and total control of all branches of government and had spent the last year+ ramming through the Assault Weapons Ban, The Brady Bill, Tax Increases including on Social Security, retroactive tax increases by canceling tax cuts from a few years earlier. They had spent a year trying to cram Hillary Care which would have nationalized 1/7th of the American economy through. The Clinton administration had spent two years before the 1992 elections and after trashing the “Radical Religious Right” as Jocelyn Elders went out on a daily basis advocating for teaching kindergartners about sex and passing out condoms in grade schools…Clinton had made a mess in Somalia and had allowed American warships to be chased out of Haiti by a club wielding mob and the Democrats hadn’t come up with an economic package it could run on.
$5 for Saxby – Money Bomb on Saturday!!
https://www.saxby.org/Contribute.aspx
Greetings to my friends, family and extended family. Last week on November 4 we as conservatives and Republicans took a huge drubbing in the general and Presidential elections. Democrats now have a huge chance to reshape not only the political landscape but to affect the very way we live our lives. I am not trying to spread fear or to make people paranoid but we need to realize the gravity of the situation.
But the news is not all bad. Saxby Chambliss the Republican senator from Georgia won his senate race thereby ensuring that the Democrats do not have a filibuster proof majority in that house. Unfortunately Chambliss won less that %50 of the vote which means he faces a runoff election on December 2nd against his democratic challenger Jim Martin.
The Obama camp, seeing an opportunity to get closer to the 60 votes they need to override vetoes in the senate, are pouring money and people in to Georgia to help defeat Saxby. And he needs our help, he has to campaign again since the Democrats are going to be working very hard to change people’s minds.
So here is the proposition: we are going to drop a Money Bomb on Georgia! We are not going to give large amounts of money, we are regular people, but there are a lot of us. If each of us donates just $5 but also gets all of our friends on facebook and our email buddies to donate $5 we can truly make a difference. Our power comes not from our wallets but from our connections to friends through a common goal.
So here’s the deal, Money Bomb this Saturday. Mark it on your calendar: on Saturday November 15 donate $5 to the Saxby Chambliss campaign. Your job is twofold, first is obviously to donate $5(more if you can) on Saturday morning using this link: https://www.saxby.org/Contribute.aspx . Second and probably MORE important is to send that link to all of your friends, post it on your facebook, writ about it in your blog and write emails to all of your friends. You have two days to get the word out the key is not how much you donate but how many donators you can recruit.
We can do this, we can make a difference, our way of life literally depends on it. The liberals in the Democratic party have signaled that they are going to do whatever it takes to enact their agenda. Which includes but is not limited too:
-Return of the “fairness doctrine” to silence Rush Limbaugh, Sean Hannity etc
-The repealing of all abortion laws including parental consent and partial birth laws
-Return of the death tax
-Repealing of all the Bush tax cuts, including the return of the death tax
And that’s just a few. Democrats have also signaled that they will force all Democrats to toe the leftist line, including the Southern Democrats who won by running on conservative platforms. So there will be no dealing, filibusters are literally our only defense against liberal attempts to remake this great Country.
All it takes is $5 and the courage to share your enthusiasm for what you believe with the people around you. It’s not too late to make a difference, pass the word on!
Congressman Warns of Coming Dictatorship
In an interview with the Associated Press, Republican Congressman from Georgia, Paul Broun, warns of the potential of Barack Obama creating a marxist dictatorship. Chief among his concerns is Obama’s desire to create a “Gestapo-like” civilian security force.
“It may sound a bit crazy and off base, but the thing is, he’s the one who proposed this national security force,” Rep. Paul Broun said of Obama in an interview Monday with The Associated Press. “I’m just trying to bring attention to the fact that we may — may not, I hope not — but we may have a problem with that type of philosophy of radical socialism or Marxism.”
Broun cited a July speech by Obama that has circulated on the Internet in which the then-Democratic presidential candidate called for a civilian force to take some of the national security burden off the military.
“That’s exactly what Hitler did in Nazi Germany and it’s exactly what the Soviet Union did,” Broun said. “When he’s proposing to have a national security force that’s answering to him, that is as strong as the U.S. military, he’s showing me signs of being Marxist.”
Can any leftist liberal Democrat say, “I AM NOT A COMMUNIST”?
As election over, why not come to the reality? Do you have the balls to reject the leftist, liberal, socialist, marxist, communist ‘view of your western Capitalism’? If so, let’s tallk about it. jt
The Conservative Language of 2010 and Beyond
As Frank Luntz explained to a PBS Frontline crew in 2004*, calling for the abolition of an “estate tax” was not effective; calling for the abolition of a “death tax” resonated much better and made the issue a winning one for the Republicans.
It is my opinion that one of the reasons Barack Obama won last night is that his language was better-tested and better-suited for the United States of 2008. This is not meant as a slight on Senator Obama, but rather a compliment. I believe that there is nothing wrong with couching an argument in your own terms. In this election, Republicans were blindsided by the tsunami of hope and change, and were never able to break through with competing language that made Republican ideas sound good to our increasingly post-modern electorate.

A few points on tonight
Point one: There’s no need to start pointing fingers within the party. This election was on style, not substance. No faction’s to blame, and no policy is at fault. We know this because Obama won. He ran on no ideas at all.
We all went into this together with the wrong idea. We just need to learn how to win again, rather than try to pin the loss on somebody. No, I don’t even blame John McCain and the mavericks like him.
Point two: This isn’t the end of America. Our values are more resilient than Obama is strong. Our civil institutions are stronger than Obama is socialist. Our nation is greater than any one man, including the President. We will endure anything that happens under his Presidency.
Point three: This is no time for ‘purging’ anyone. This it time for regrouping and winning again.
Point four: 1980 didn’t come just because President Carter was that bad. It came because Republicans and conservatives worked hard, prepared for 1980, got a good candidate, and worked within the party for victory.
Point five: 2010 comes before 2012. Let’s focus on getting 435 excellent candidates for the House, 33 excellent candidates for the Senate, and excellent candidates for Governor and state legislator.
Point six: If you’re pushing a candidate for 2012 right now, you’re not to be taken seriously.
