After FBI Director James Comey was fired by President Trump in May 2017, part of what he revealed was that he kept memos of his interactions with the new president, feeling that there may come a time when they were important.

That time may be now, as Congress has requested to see those memos.

House Judiciary Committee Chairman Bob Goodlatte, R-Va., House Oversight and Government Reform Committee Chairman Trey Gowdy, R-S.C., and House Intelligence Committee Chairman Devin Nunes, R-Ca., said in a letter to Justice Department officials earlier this week that there is “no legal basis for withholding these materials from Congress.”

Goodlatte has not yet subpoenaed the Justice Department, but it is expected that that may be the next step.

Democrat Representative Jerrold Nadler has expressed concern that this could put Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein on course for a contempt of Congress charge, followed by a premature close to Robert Mueller’s investigation.

Then again, a lot may hinge on what is contained in those memos. Comey has already met with Robert Mueller, and according to some reports, Mueller already has the memos.

It’s another one of those “stand-by” situations from this investigation. We may not know what they say until everything wraps up.
