This is why you don’t let potentially compromised reality TV goofs run national policy. They can be taken in by anything.
In his desire to be seen as a statesman, President Trump is showing a breathtaking level of naivete.
In several Wednesday morning tweets, Trump discussed his eagerness to meet with North Korea’s dictator, Kim Jong Un.
For years and through many administrations, everyone said that peace and the denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula was not even a small possibility. Now there is a good chance that Kim Jong Un will do what is right for his people and for humanity. Look forward to our meeting!

Who really believes Trump has put a lot of thought into this, beyond how it will play out in the press?
For years, U.S. presidents have refused to meet with the leaders of North Korea because none wanted to give the dictatorship the appearance of legitimacy. On this front, Trump has already been out-maneuvered by Kim.
Trump sees himself being hailed as the world’s greatest diplomat – a historical presidency that results in quelling the nuclear ambitions of a rogue regime.
The reality is that it is very unlikely that North Korea will disarm, and Kim gets the PR win by showing that his power has been able to drag a sitting U.S. president to his level, as equals.
Also, Trump puts far too much trust in China’s Xi Jinping.
China has far more at stake in keeping Kim in hand. I don’t believe he has the kind of affection for Trump that Trump seems to think he has.
Received message last night from XI JINPING of China that his meeting with KIM JONG UN went very well and that KIM looks forward to his meeting with me. In the meantime, and unfortunately, maximum sanctions and pressure must be maintained at all cost!

First of all, why the random capitalization?
Second of all, it’s a good move to continue with the sanctions. At the very least, demand some action on North Korea’s part that shows intent to do what they’ve suggested.
I have no expectations of success or sanity in this upcoming meeting. It won’t be what Trump and his supporters are imagining, where Kim kisses Trump’s ring, gives up his nuclear program, and a new era of peace is heralded in.
The best we can hope for is to avoid any potential international incident.
