It sounds like in his short time as Secretary of State, Rex Tillerson really got an education about the Washington, D.C. culture and the people around him.
Apparently, he learned the value of kindness.
Tillerson spoke to his department today, possibly for the last time. In his speech, he encouraged State Department personnel to perform an act of kindness, each day.
Gee… I wonder where this is coming from.
Also:
“This can be a very mean-spirited town,” Tillerson said to a round of laughs and applause. “But you don’t have to choose to participate in that.”
He also stressed the values of respect and dignity – something I promise you he gained more appreciation for after a year of seeing none with the current administration.
Notably absent from Tillerson’s remarks was any mention of Trump – the second time since his firing that he declined to acknowledge the president in public comments.
Well, if you don’t have anything good to say…
Tillerson’s last day, officially, is March 31. He probably won’t stick around in Washington for that long, and will likely return to Texas in the coming days. In the meantime, he’s been working to fill out the necessary paperwork and assist with the transition for his successor, Mike Pompeo.
This is probably a relief for Tillerson, actually. He hasn’t had the best relationship with his boss.
Back in July of 2017, reports were that Tillerson almost resigned, due to a profane, abusive appearance at the annual Boy Scout Jamboree.
Tillerson, an Eagle Scout, himself, was reportedly disgusted at Trump’s behavior and called Trump a “f**king moron.”
Afterwards, Tillerson denied that he had considered resigning.
He did not deny that he’d called Trump a moron.
Trump’s intellectual failings were not the only problem.
There were multiple clashes over foreign policy issues, such as the Iran deal and the Paris climate accords.
But after he concluded his remarks on Thursday, Tillerson left the State Department to several minutes of applause, as he shook the hands of employees on his way out the door.
Good, Rex. Get out while you can.
