A spokeswoman for the House Freedom Caucus has announced that members of the conservative group plan to file a “discharge petition,” hoping for enough signatures in the House to force a vote on repealing Obamacare.
Efforts to pass a “skinny repeal” failed last month. The so-called “skinny repeal” would have kept Obamacare, with certain provisions nixed.
The group is seeking a vote on a repeal-only measure that passed in 2015. Conservatives argue that Republicans are being hypocritical if they vote against that bill now since they already voted for it two years ago.
But it is in serious doubt whether it could pass. Many Republicans say they want to have replacement measures in place at the same time to prevent people from losing coverage.
But none ran on “replacement,” and certainly not on keeping it in place, with a few tweaks.
The thought is that a move like this could potentially gain backing from the White House, as President Trump has pushed that Republicans in Congress keep fighting for repeal.
And they should, or they should probably start packing for the trip back to the private sector in 2018.
