I’ll say it again: Trump is his own worst enemy.
It’s not the leakers Trump should worry about, nor are they the ones the GOP need to be aiming their barbs at.
It’s becoming commonplace to hear that Trump eschews the experience and wisdom of his staff.
Seriously, he’s pulled in some solid players, but the greatest minds in the world may as well be mannequins if he’s not utilizing their skills.
Look at H.R. McMaster, who has been dispatched to serve as the face of this latest Trump blunder.
A man with McMaster’s background really shouldn’t have to serve as the crash test dummy for his inept boss, but according to a Tuesday report from the New York Times, he was probably trotted out simply because he gets on Trump’s nerves.
Explaining how things likely went down, based on previous experience:
There is a fear among some of Mr. Trump’s senior advisers about leaving him alone in meetings with foreign leaders out of concern he might speak out of turn. General McMaster, in particular, has tried to insert caveats or gentle corrections into conversations when he believes the president is straying off topic or onto boggy diplomatic ground.
In other words, McMaster’s new job title is “idiot wrangler.”
This has, at times, chafed the president, according to two officials with knowledge of the situation. Mr. Trump, who still openly laments having to dismiss his first national security adviser, Michael T. Flynn, has groused that General McMaster talks too much in meetings, and the president has referred to him as “a pain,” according to one of the officials.
Oh, I’m sure he does miss Flynn. That’s not McMaster’s fault. It is entirely Trump’s fault for his refusal to take good counsel. He, nor the nation are well-served by a phalanx of Yes-men.
In private, three administration officials conceded that they could not publicly articulate their most compelling — and honest — defense of the president: that Mr. Trump, a hasty and indifferent reader of printed briefing materials, simply did not possess the interest or knowledge of the granular details of intelligence gathering to leak specific sources and methods of intelligence gathering that would do harm to United States allies.
In other words: He’s too dumb to grasp the really critical info that would cause a big problem if he blabbed it, so everybody can relax.
Yeah. I feel better, already.
