The Grand Poobah of false news, Dan Rather, spoke up Sunday, via his Facebook page, about Donald Trump and his administration. In particular, he gave a warning that these were not “normal times.”
Gee, welcome to the party, Dan.
Said Rather, referencing Trump’s reaction to news about his inaugural crowd size:
“When you have a spokesperson for the president of the United States wrap up a lie in the Orwellian phrase ‘alternative facts’ …,” Rather wrote.
“When you have a press secretary in his first appearance before the White House reporters threaten, bully, lie, and then walk out of the briefing room without the cajones to answer a single questions…,” he added.
“When you have a President stand before the stars of the fallen CIA agents and boast about the size of his crowds (lies) and how great his authoritarian inaugural speech was…”
“These are not normal times.”
And he’s right, there.
Nothing about the last year and a half seems normal or natural for the order of business.
Trump’s ego will be his undoing, if he can’t live up to everything he’s promised.
Rather, himself, may be feeling a bit raw about Trump’s attacks on the media.
Rather’s long career as a CBS journalist and anchor will be forever stained by his rush to push an unsubstantiated story attacking President George W. Bush’s service with the Air National Guard.
The documents were eventually discredited. Producer, Mary Mapes was fired, and Rather, himself, resigned shortly afterwards.
Granting a little grace, we can say Rather is now speaking out of experience and a lesson learned.
“Facts and the truth are not partisan,” he said. “They are the bedrock of our democracy. And you are either with them, with us, with our Constitution, our history, and the future of our nation, or you are against it. Everyone must answer that question.”
Facts and truth should not be partisan. That’s true.
Sadly, Rather and his ilk may have set the stage for this very strange, contentious time in our history.
He’ll have to live with that.
