I Love George Will

Honestly, what’s not to love?

He’s an intelligent, well-spoken, conservative. Though all of his opinions about the state of the party have not always been met with absolute agreement, and he’s not afraid to take controversial stands against the party and its leadership, it’s hard to dismiss his reasoning outright. He’s a Pulitzer Prize winner, columnist for the Washington Post, former editor for National Review, and he’s also a Goldwater-Republican.

At least he was.

Will announced that he had left the Republican party at a Federalist Society function on Friday, but announced it more publicly on Fox News Sunday.

“After Trump went after the ‘Mexican’ judge from northern Indiana then (House Speaker) Paul Ryan endorsed him, I decided that in fact this was not my party anymore,” Will said on “Fox News Sunday.”

Will echoes the sentiments of many conservative Republicans now, who feel absolutely betrayed by what amounts to an infection of our home party by Know-nothings, radical Nationalists, and neo-liberals, who find Trump’s dizzying habit of flipping on every topic as a gateway for ending conservative influence in politics forever.

“I joined it because I was a conservative, and I leave it for the same reason: I’m a conservative,” Will said.

“The long and the short of it is, as Ronald Reagan said when he changed his registration, ‘I did not leave the Democratic Party; the Democratic Party left me,’ ” he said.

Of course, Trump is gonna Trump, so to Twitter he took, in order to respond to Will’s decision.

Sure, Donnie. George Will does more to promote conservatism and sound governance on his way to the bathroom after dinner on any given day, than you’ve done in your entire year-long career as a “Republican.”

Will, when informed of Trump’s typical Twitter idiocy, responded with mic-drop brutality:

“He has an advantage on me, because he can say everything he knows about any subject in 140 characters and I can’t.”

BOOM.

I love George Will.
