All hail the former war criminal turned voice of reason. It wasn’t long ago that Left leaning blogs like Kos ran headlines like “Uncle Tom Powell Stumps for Massah Bush”. That headline is almost as racist as McCain’s assertion that Obama’s government handout is “welfare” or as Sarah Palin calling small town America “patriotic”.
Now that Colin Powell is no longer a house servant I guess he is acceptable again. How times have changed. Powell is being exalted so much already, I almost forget about his role in the Iraq war. If his role in that war taught us one thing about Powell, it is that he is good at bucking the blame and leaving friends high and dry, so John McCain shouldn’t be surprised.
No longer can Left wings blog engage in civil discussions over whether it is okay to call Colin Powell an Uncle Tom and Condoleezza Rice an Aunt Jemima. Poor Condoleezza will have to fight the Aunt Jemima smears all alone now. Some great new friends you got there Colin.
Did all racial guilt tripping from the Left finally wear him down? Nice message to send to the kids – racial identity and cowardliness in the face of slander and intimidation.
What else could it be? How could an old cold warrior who served two Republican presidents support the most liberal and inexperienced man ever to run for the office of the presidency. He didn’t want to make race an issue, but he just did. His token support of Obama is so transparent and no one outside the MSM will care.
This is non-news. Sarah Palin on SNL is a bigger headline of the day. Sorry Colin, Mr. Irrelevant.

Whatever the reason, disappointing...
securitymom (Diary) Sunday, October 19th at 10:08AM EST (link)Since General Powell was the one who made the case at the UN for WMD, perhaps he is now trying to purge his soul of the thousands of young men and women who have been lost.
I really am quite personally disappointed. As one of those who sent her son (US Marine) off because of the work he did…I wish I had know of his character flaw then.
Loyalty use to matter, perhaps what has taken it’s place is self. An American hero who has become what is the opposite of what the military stands for.
All that being said I don’t think this means anything for the race…

The powell endorsement has been expected for a long time, at least since July
ZootSuit (Diary) Sunday, October 19th at 10:16AM EST (link)In that sense and in that sense only is it irrelevant. However, despite the fact that it was expected, it is not irrelevant. Unfortunately, it adds to the MSM meme that the McCain campaign is crashing.
Moreover, as far as Iraq is concerned, it was not Powell who betrayed the Bush Administration. If anything, it was the Bush Administration that betrayed Colin Powell.
The reason Colin Powell was given the task of presenting the Administration’s case against Iraq was because he was the most believable person on the Administration. Everyone knows this and even at the time admitted it. And Colin Powell presented the case well.
But then once the war started, the Bush Administration seemed intent on not taking his advice and not addressing his concerns. Indeed, one of the areas where Powell and McCain were together in fighting the Bush Administration early was in getting more troops in Iraq as well as strengthening our Iraqi allies politically (i.e. what would become the surge strategy years later). Quite frankly, Rumsfeld and Cheney seemed intent on proving that their “shock and awe” strategy was superior to Powell’s “overwhelming force” military doctrine, despite the undeniable evidence to the contrary.
Indeed, as loath as many conservatives are to admit it, if Bush had listened to Powell and McCain instead of Rumsfeld and Cheney, the war would have gone much better much sooner and the Bush Administration in particular as well as Republicans in general would have a more favorable rating now and probably doing much better in the polls.
So while I disagree with Colin Powell’s endorsement — especially since on the war he was essentially allied with Obama’s opponent, John McCain, against the “neo-cons” in the Bush Administration — I can understand it. Indeed, considering Powell’s admittedly moderate and even liberal social and economic views, which he has always admitted, it becomes even more understandable.
But then again, when you look at the economic positions the Bush Administration has taken and some of the proposals the McCain campaign has put forward, you can’t really say that they have been anything but liberal themselves.

MSM meme is right
Swamp_Yankee (Diary) Sunday, October 19th at 10:24AM EST (link)Trust me Joe the plumber doesn’t care. This could even backfire in some respects. Obama is working overtime to rally working whites in VA, PA and OH. He doesn’t need the perception that people are voting along racial lines.
With respect to Powell and the war, he was another ego. Most of them, including Powell, left Bush high and dry. So what are you saying, a cabinet secratary doesnt get his way, so he is entitled to sulk, quit and tear down the family that supported him all those years.
Powell is lame. This story is lame.
Not quite as understanding as you...
securitymom (Diary) Sunday, October 19th at 10:52AM EST (link)One does need to take responsibilities for what they have done. If Powell did not agree with what he did in the Administration he could have quit. He no longer was in the service.
He holds a huge responsibility, and he is now backing away from it.
“Security Mom/Grandma”
But Powell did quit!
ZootSuit (Diary) Sunday, October 19th at 11:13AM EST (link)Indeed, see Swamp Yankee’s comment below. The interesting thing is that Swamp Yankee now seems to hold the same opinion of Powell that you do.
And as to Swamp Yankee’s comments below about Powell: I disagree that he tore “down the family that supported him all those years.”
What Powell did was faithfully present the Administration’s case for invading Iraq but then later question some of the information he was given and how the way the war was being conducted. He then quit and then, as a private citizen, stated his own views. While you may disagree with him, nothing he has done here is illegal or even unethical or in any way “tear[ing] down the family that supported him all those years.”
If anything, he supported them.

Michael DeWeese (Diary) Sunday, October 19th at 3:17PM EST (link)I agree with zoot for the most part. Powell felt betrayed, used and lied to by the Bush Admin. The scars must be harsh. I am disspointed he would support a socialist, having been in the Cold War. Perhaps the immediacy of islamofascists have made the socialists look less evil.

1SGinTN (Diary) Sunday, October 19th at 3:20PM EST (link)You’re right, non-news. Although I had a certain amount of respect and loyalty towards him (we did suit-up for the same team, after all), he never was a ‘my kind’ of general. Not quite a “perfumed prince” (see what COL David Hackworth meant by that) in the mold of Wesley Clark, but not what I consider a ‘muddy boots’ general. Moderate = lukewarm, which “I spew out of my mouth”.

the point is that the media has destroyed America from the inside out. Its not about the dolts who believe the headlines. Its about the pseudo-dolts who take Woodward as gospel.
My God, how stupis can republicans get. Powell as the righteous sacrrificial lamb.
