Oh, and one other thing that I forgot to address in my diary. The media was going up to random people on the street and asking them what they thought of the song “Barack The Magic Negro” without putting it into context, or explaining to them that it was a parody of an LA Times column. (Naturally, they said that they thought it sounded offensive, because they didn’t understand that it was a parody.) Well, Jon Stewart did a parody of a John Cornyn ad called “Big Jew”. Now, Stewart wasn’t making fun of Jewish people (Jon Stewart is Jewish), he was making fun of the Cornyn ad. However, I’m sure that if you asked random people on the street if they thought that a comedy sketch titled “Big Jew” sounded offensive (without explaining to them that it was a parody), they would probably say “yes”–just like they would probably think that a cartoon of Al Sharpton being shocked by a dog collar sounds offensive.
