Based on the numbers in the news article, Hoffman would need to get 80% of the uncounted absentees. So far he appears to be getting just over 50% of the absentees that have been counted so far. That is a statistical impossibility.

Clear that this district could have remained in GOP column had the party not screwed up so bad. Hopefully, they have learned their lesson and will do better next time.

Swearing Owens in was legal and nothing will change the votes he gave in Congress. However, there are a few things missing in your summation.

One is Pelosi spent a lot of political capital with her haste and Owens’ subsequent breaking of campaign promises.

Two, if the vote becomes closer it will be an indication of 2010 sans Scozzafava and sends a clear message to Washington that we’re mad as hell and aren’t going to take it anymore. Third, is that if Hoffman gets the miracle win from it, then we don’t have to worry about the promise breaking Owens for the rest of this term.

And from that you define it as whining???

Doug doesn’t pull it out and I pray to God he does (to negate that yes vote on healthcare) it is still ultimately a SLAP in the face of the GOP because had he been picked from the beginning he would have WON! He would have had the RNC’s 900K in commercials, he would have had ALL the workers on the ground (though in the end he had the BEST workers on ground, right Hoohah!).

IF he wins it all the crowing will be heard from sea to shining sea from CONSERVATIVES who donated money, made phone call (btw love the accent up there ..heh) and PRAYED (TONS). I cannot believe there is still life but I am thrilled at the narrowing vote totals.

Then I remembered that you probably teach the courses that do not require a positive interger as the number in the 3 digit code. Both Bush and Owens were sworn in. I remember conservatives crying like little girls when Democrats whined like the Right is doing right now.

around the thing HE could have said to be look more intelligent. I would argue that NY-23 vote would have been eaten by another moderate in the D party instead of Owens had Hoffman won.

probably not! Do thay many people actually call in as many wrong totals as they did? It all sounds suspicous to me. Someone needs to check into that.

As soon as Hoffman conceded, the race became uncontested and Owens could be sworn in without a state certification of the vote totals.

That being said, if the re-canvassing of the votes – standard practice before a vote certification, BTW – shows that Hoffman comes out ahead, Owens will be forced to leave the House so that the certified winner can take his seat.

As far as the post about waiting until next year…well, a lot of damage can be done in the 11 months leading up to that election. I’d rather have a conservative in that seat to try to minimize it instead of a Dem who breaks campaign pledges before he even leavers for DC.
