Pope Francis Is Wrong On Refugees And His Words Will Get People Killed

Pope Francis caresses a child at the Vatican, Thursday, Aug. 11, 2016. Pope Francis has had lunch with a group of Syrian refugees who were brought to Italy from the Greek island of Lesbos thanks to the pope’s intercession. The Vatican said Thursday that the pope brought toys and other gifts for the children, who, in turn, gave him a selection of their drawings. Both the adults and children had the chance to speak with the pontiff ‘’about the beginning of their live in Italy,’’ the Vatican said. (L'Osservatore Romano/Pool Photo via AP)

I am an unapologetic Catholic but I have to express my confusion of our current Pope’s inability to perceive reality. I mentioned this before when I discussed the, in my view, disastrous environmental encyclical “Laudato Si’,” or “Praise Be to You” . In that encyclical, he romanticizes the life of the subsistence farmer — and it is safe to say that he has never lived that life — and trashes an economic system that has done more to lift people out of poverty than all the good wishes and unicorn farts in the history of the world.

That is a minor problem. Because most nations aren’t going to voluntarily return to a pre-industrial society. Where he goes into profoundly dangerous territory is on the subject of immigration, particularly the mass migration of Islamic ‘refugees’.

Pope Francis has encouraged Europeans to welcome refugees, calling authentic hospitality “our greatest security against hateful acts of terrorism.”

Francis Saturday spoke to alumni of Jesuit schools in Europe who were in Rome for a conference on refugees.

The pope said: “I encourage you to welcome refugees into your homes and communities, so that their first experience of Europe is not the traumatic experience of sleeping cold on the streets, but one of warm welcome.”

Telling his audience that more than 65 million persons are forcibly displaced around the world, he advised going “beyond mere statistics.”

He said each refugee “has a name, a face and a story, as well as an inalienable right to live in peace and to aspire to a better future” for their children.

The fact is that refugees in Europe are not “sleeping cold on the streets.” Europe has become a magnet for refugees from the Hillary Clinton inspired civil war in Syria because Europe has been imprudently generous in providing housing and benefits for refugees. If the Vatican had taken in more than 20 refugees and they were living in Pope Francis’s apartments I’d be more inclined to take this exhortation seriously. Logically, the easiest way to achieve security in Europe is to follow the example of some of the Easter European nations and refuse to allow Syrian refugees to settle because terrorism is only spawned in those places that allow Muslim refugees to establish safe areas for ISIS… which is wherever you find Muslim refugees.

And, not to put too fine a point on it, the “inalienable right to live in peace and aspire to a better future” applies just as surely to Europeans who are put at risk and who are seing their own quality of life suffer because of the unbridled influx of refugees that is known to include ISIS gunmen. Are residents of Paris and Brussels more safe and secure because of the way they have treated refugees? I think not.

I appreciate the overarching position of the Pope. Charity, especially charity to strangers and charity to the needy, is a cornerstone of Christianity. Even when the strangers and needy are a violence-prone people hostile to the very idea of religious plurality much less Christianity. But the statements of the Pope that place 100% of the burden of living in peace upon the people who are not causing the violence and engaging in sexual predations on a scale unrivaled since the Turks were turned back at the gates of Vienna are the statements of a man totally divorced from the lives of every day people, they are not the words of a pastor concerned for the well-being of his flock.
