This is the worst sort of head-in-the-sand thinking and it underscores why the establishment let this election get away from them… other than the entire nation being sick of their duplicity. Jeff Sessions, to conservatives, is not an anonymous backbencher. Sessions is always in the thick of any conservative fight. Just as Christie’s endorsement was a signal to a lot of moderates that voting for Trump was okay, Sessions is a signal to a lot of conservatives that Trump is okay. This is not Armageddon but neither was it “baked in” nor are Sessions fans necessarily Trump supporters. In fact, this hurts Ted Cruz as much as it helps Donald Trump.
