I’d like to take a few minutes out from the strum und drang of our approaching financial Apocalypse and the Daley-Emanuel (Rahm, not Jeff)-Blagojevich-Obama Axis and focus on my favorite subject: the American Soldier.
Yesterday the Washington Post reported on ten US Army Green Berets receiving the Silver Star following a small unit action in an extremely remote section of Afghanistan. Please take the time to read the story but this gives you a flavor.
Farther down the hill in the streambed, Master Sgt. Scott Ford, the team sergeant, was firing an M203 grenade launcher at the fighting positions, he recalled. An Afghan commando fired rocket-propelled grenades at the windows from which they were taking fire, while Howard shot rounds from a rocket launcher and recoilless rifle.
Ford, of Athens, Ohio, then moved up the mountain amid withering fire to aid Walton at his command position. The ferocity of the attack surprised him, as rounds ricocheted nearby every time he stuck his head out from behind a rock. “Typically they run out of ammo or start to manage their ammo, but . . . they held a sustained rate of fire for about six hours,” he said.
As Ford and Staff Sgt. John Wayne Walding returned fire, Walding was hit below his right knee. Ford turned and saw that the bullet “basically amputated his right leg right there on the battlefield.”
Walding, of Groesbeck, Tex., recalled: “I literally grabbed my boot and put it in my crotch, then got the boot laces and tied it to my thigh, so it would not flop around. There was about two inches of meat holding my leg on.” He put on a tourniquet, watching the blood flow out the stump to see when it was tight enough.
Then Walding tried to inject himself with morphine but accidentally used the wrong tip of the syringe and put the needle in this thumb, he later recalled. “My thumb felt great,” he said wryly, noting that throughout the incident he never lost consciousness. “My name is John Wayne,” he said.
Fifty years ago James Mitchner posed the question I used for the title of this story in his novel The Bridges at Toko-Ri, in the 1954 film of the same name Frederic March as Admiral Tarrant has these lines. It was a different war at a different time. But there were a lot of similiarities. A president was fighting an unpopular but necessary war, the opposition, this would be my party, made, in my view, the war an issue to gain political advantage. Young men were called upon to do the impossible, whether at Chosen Reservoir, Chipyong-ni, Fallujah, or Shah-i-kot. And I suspect unless Obama turns out to have poltroonery that can be measured on the Richter Scale that the ultimate outcome will be similar.
I spent a good portion of my adult life in the company of these men (and admittedly a good portion of my childhood wanting to be one and a good portion of my life since then waxing maudlin over my loss). They aren’t Rhodes Scholars. They will always be Tommy Atkins to the left which will “support” them but not what they’re doing and haul them before federal grand juries when they return home. And I still don’t have an answer for Admiral Tarrant’s question: where do we get such men?

In short, (sorry, not really) we get such men from normal everyday people who understand something has to be done to preserve the single greatest nation God ever placed on earth.

From the athletic fields of high school sports. The kid who made every practice, practiced 100% and then left it all on the playing field every Friday night.
We get them from the wheat fields and farms of the mid-west, where they worked side by side with Dads from sunup to sundown – and rarely complained.
We get them from youth organizations like Boy Scouts, JROTC, Sea Cadets and all the other programs that work to instill virtue and hard work and love of Country into our youth.
We even get them from some of the most improbably places and backgrounds. Young men and women who are aimless, but someplace inside them is a smoldering ember. Then they chance upon a recruiter’s office and say, “What the heck, why not.” And then they are immersed in an atmosphere of excellence and honor, trained, nurtured and mentored by NCO’s who breathe life into that smoldering ember and it bursts forth into a flame, so we can ask the question, “From where do we get such people?”

At any rate it sounds like those Green Berets owe a lot to the ability of our country to drop big bombs danger close. There is simply no one better I suspect in this regard than the United States.
Thanks to the Navy and Air Force that when they are needed, they are there.
I recently read a piece from some doofus saying our carriers are outmoded wastes of money. If you watched the excellent miniseries “Carrier” you noted that no bombs were dropped in anger during their entire deployment. But then again millions of us buy insurance but never need it. Carriers and air power our insurance policies for our valiant military that must be maintained. So long as there are dollars for pork and Murtha-sop there is ample money for carriers.

Carriers and Air Power

I’m sure that in D.C. when something happens in the world, one of the first questions asked is, “Where are the carriers?”
The Air Force does a great job in air superiority and air support, as does the Navy. But, the Air Force has to get there and get all their stuff there. A carrier shows up with it’s Air Wing and all the stuff it needs to commence operations.
Of course, I might be biased.

Yet, the GWOT actions by our military, the swelling volunteer force, coming from young men who know that by enlisting they are going into harm’s way, and in fact many of them seek to be on the line there.
My best guess — out of every generation, in a free nation and still great nation, there is a patriotic impulse that finds some more than others. I am almost convinced that FAMILY plays a key role in this.

A country that is as benevolent and charitable while being so powerful, has seldom been seen on the Earth. That is why we must fight to keep our families strong. And we must deny the Reidocrats the ability to break down our backbone, the US military.
When we project our military might to the bad actors of the world, we display that our people will not give up their freedom nor the freedom of allies without a fight;
Having lived in a tiny house near the local bombing range during our war with Viet Nam, with the attendant window-rattling reminders of what those bombs were made for, I started to rethink my peacenik stance. I remember contemplating what it would be like if enemy decided to cross our shores for real.
Those who hate our country are the perversion. The Kerry/Murtha/Reids may have their day in the sun, but their crooked ways will not stand. This could be a transition period in our history when instead of people trying to pick an idol who promises something for nothing, they will try to be better individuals and do something on their own. If old fashioned truth and honesty don’t make a comeback soon, though, we are definitely in for dark days ahead.
I do take comfort in the idea that altruism is genetically present and that no matter how noxious our culture and politics become, there will always be those who are willing to do the right thing at personal cost. Whether mother nature or God gave us the altruism gene, I thank God for our country and the men and women who keep it free.

Wal-Mart bought all the wreaths as part of the Wreaths Across America project and trucked them down from Maine. We had other trucks delivering wreaths all across the country even out to CA. I’m a Navy vet, from an entire family of Navy vets; dad, mom, sister, and brother, and I was nearly brought to tears from participating in the wreath laying. It was very moving. as Ronald Reagan said ” Freedom is never more than one generation away from extinction. We didn’t pass it on to our children in the bloodstream. It must be fought for, protected, and handed on for them to do the same, or one day we will spend our sunset years telling our children what it was once like in the United States when men were free. ”
